Enchanting light of the evening……….. explored by kimberly ann kern on Flickr.
Via Flickr:
There I was again tonight, forcing laughter, faking smiles
Same old, tired place lonely place
Walls of insincerity, shifting eyes and vacancy
Vanished when I saw your face
All I can say is it was enchanting to meet you
Your eyes whispered, “Have we met?” across the room, your silhouette
Starts to make its way to me
The playful conversation starts, counter all your quick remarks
Like passing notes in secrecy

Mulino a vento / Windmill by AndreaPucci on Flickr.

Italia, Toscana, Orbetello (GR), Inverno 2011
The Molino Spagnolo or Spanish mill is the only windmill which remained from a series of nine built by the Senesi and subsequently restored by the Spanish when the lagoon city became the capital of the little State of Presidi (1557). The mill has a circular shape and, along with the others, was used to grind the flour destined to the city’s inhabitants. Suggestively rising from the lagoon, the building is located at the beginning of an artificial dam built by Grand Duke Leopold II in 1842 to connect Orbetello to Argentario.

The bottom of the Cataratas Llanos de Cortes in the highland rain forest area near Tenorio National Park. Our visit to these beautiful falls was not even in our itinerary. It was one of my favorite places to visually experience during our tour with Greg Basco and Foto Verde Tours. We swam, sat on the rocks under the falls, and enjoyed one of the less known spots (to tourists) in Costa Rica!

4 Donkeys - Against the Sun by Anoop Negi on Flickr.
Via Flickr:
4 donkeys and a minder were coming in from the Sun.
On the small road in Toranmal, a vestige of the encroaching world.
In a few yards, the road will crumble into a bare track.
Walking for many hours is where there is home.
In these hills that is how life unfolds its daily cycle
Not many people from the cities venture hither.
No roads exist and there are no agendas of exploitation.
How long will this persist ?
LIfe is serene and unspoilt in Toranmal. Inhabited mostly by the Pawra tribals who are getting their first brush of exposure to the pax urbana.
A note on the photography
This has been shot against the light, which most upmarket classical school of photography advocate for a outstanding photograph. LIttle do these purveyors of photographic academia from the New York Institute of Photography to others realise that most commercial and ordinary day to day work is done with the light directed at the subject from the front or side on or angled. It is an anachronism to advocate lighting from behind. Maybe they are just being difficult and relying on extreme contrast that sometimes can occur that way.
Be as it may, this is totally back lit by the sun and you can see significant rim lighting. Details are not too great and the choice of a black and white is obvious to compensate for the slight burn in the highlights in the sky.
So here is to some shooting against the Sun
and here comes the Sun done in a bossa nova style straight from Brazil

The Eiffel Tower, Paris by SharpeImages.co.uk on Flickr.
Via Flickr:
The Eiffel Tower (French: Tour Eiffel) is a 19th century iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris that has become both a global icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in the world. The Eiffel Tower, which is the tallest building in Paris, is the single most visited paid monument in the world; millions of people ascend it every year. Named after its designer, engineer Gustave Eiffel, the tower was built as the entrance arch for the 1889 World’s Fair.

A starry view from near the end of the blue hour of the Hewlett Fire just west of Fort Collins, CO in the Poudre Canyon at a popular hiking area. The very bright spot on right is of course Venus.
Currently the fire is 370 acres and 5% contained. A heartfelt thanks to the firefighters on this and sending positive thoughts to those in harms way! You can keep up on the fire (and other fires) on the InciWeb here.
lunar eclipse (hdr) by Grzesiek: on Flickr.
Via Flickr:
… total lunar eclipse shot on 3rd of March 2007 in Saarbruecken with Canon 5D, at the telescope’s focus by Andrei and myself.
the part of the moon in the shadow of earth is red-orange because of earth’s atmospheare. the umbral shadow is slightly bluish and the rim gets very bright, because the greatest eclipse is almost over.
this hdr version is taken only few minutes after this photo, but the rim became so bright that it was not possible to capture the image of moon with a one shot - here high dynamic range comes in handy! (10 exposures)
details on the telescope and the location available here: astronomy at mpii.
Pink Moon, Golden Gate - Lunar Eclipse 2011 by Darvin Atkeson on Flickr.

Wallpaper Size
Just prior to dawn a hazy sky makes for a soft pink moon instead of the expected blood red of a typical total lunar eclipse. The moon glows dimly as it slides behind the southern tower of the Golden Gate Bridge as viewed from Crissy Field. It was very early in the morning as thousands of photographers lined the shore to get a shot of a once in a lifetime event. The unusual haze due to a lack of the typical wind that usually plagues the Golden Gate made for a soft pastel as the morning sun began to illuminate the hazy fog that lingered above the most famous San Francisco landmark.

During the 36-year Guatemalan civil war, the military regime killed over 200,000 people. The vast majority were Mayans from rural areas. Some 45,000 people, including Foppa, were disappeared, mostly in and around Guatemala City. Consider that the national population is only 8 million, and you start to get a sense of the scale of this trauma.

Japanese artist Makoto Tojikil is fascinated by light. He uses it in ways that create amazing illusions and out-of-this-world experiences in a subtle, inquisitive way.
But what we love most is the way his No Shadow pieces – large animal and human sculptures made of strands of light - evoke a sense of playfulness, awe, possibility and wonder. We find ourselves unable to stop staring, unwilling to leave the area of influence of the magical, somehow celestial beings and creatures.
Tojiki was born in 1975 in Miyzaki, Japan, and graduated from Kinki University in 1998 as an industrial design engineer. After a stint designing home appliances, he launched his artistic career full-time in 2003. Of the No Shadow pieces, he says “An object is seen when our eyes capture light that is reflected from the object. If we extract just the light that is reflected from ‘something,’ are we still in the presence of that ‘something?’ Using contours of light, I try to express this ‘something.’” We envision all sorts of opportunities for brands to use this type of sculpture at events, launches, stores, showrooms… - Tuija Seipell.

Happy First Day of Spring, which arrives unusually early this year.
Via Flickr:
Unless you’re an astronomer, kayaker or farmer, you might have missed that it’s the spring equinox. The duration of day and night are roughly the same, the magic moment occurring worldwide on 0514 Universal Time, March 20, 2012 (That’s 9:14 p.m. March 19th, here on the Pacific coast). From here on out, the days will be longer and the nights shorter in the Northern Hemisphere -- at least until the Earth’s wobble peaks its annual cycle on the summer solstice, June 20. Seem early this year? It is. Due to the counterintuitive nature of the Earth’s orbital dynamics and wobble, this is really the earliest arrival of spring since 1896. Climate-change deniers and other wackadoodles take note: the early chronological spring it unrelated to global warming and the unseasonably warm winter, which is occurring because of atmospheric carbon pollution and other human activity. For you space and math nerds, here is more:

| ♕ | Sarajevo, Bosnia | by emina rakic | via allthingseurope
Sarajevo is the capital and largest city of Bosnia and Herzegovina. The city is famous for its traditional religious diversity, with adherents of Islam, Orthodoxy, Catholicism and Judaism coexisting there for centuries. Due to this long and rich history of religious diversity and coexistence Sarajevo has often been called the “Jerusalem of Europe”.
Lonely Planet has named Sarajevo as the 43rd best city in the world, and in December 2009 listed Sarajevo as one of the top ten cities to visit in 2010.
