AN INDONESIAN teacher has been sentenced to five years in jail and six strokes of the cane for molesting his pupil, an eight-year-old girl from the IQRA' Al-Quran and Muqaddam School in Limau Manis.
Mohamad Arif, 34, was convicted of molesting the girl, identified in court as Miss X, on two separate occasions on July 16 and July 18, while giving her lessons in Muqaddam.
Chief Magistrate Abdullah Soefri POLSM DSP Hj Abidin told the defendant that he had committed a "gross breach of trust" by violating the relationship between teacher and pupil, and further admonished him for making parents question the safety of sending their children to school.
In earlier court proceedings, the defendant told the court he committed the acts because he wanted to be sacked from his job and sent back to Indonesia so he could look after his ailing mother.
However, the chief magistrate said he found this reason "highly unbelievable" and that if Mohamad Arif wanted to be released from his job he could have found a way that did not involve molesting other people.
"The reason given (by the defendant) was an afterthought to gain the court's sympathy," he stated.
The chief magistrate added that the defendant purposely chose the victim, a minor, because he did not expect her to make a complaint. However, she did exactly that.
According to court documents, Mohamad was teaching Al-Quran and Muqaddam to his pupils when he called Miss X over to sit next to him. While she was reciting the Muqaddam, the defendant groped Miss X until she had finished reading. When Miss X told her mother about the incident, she instructed her son, Miss X's brother, to observe the teacher's actions at school the following day.
When Miss X's brother confirmed that Mohamad had groped his sister while she read the Muqaddam, Miss X's father lodged a police report at Limau Manis Police Station the same day.
Chief Magistrate Abdullah stated that for a crime of outraging modesty the starting point for sentencing would be three years' jail. However, he added the defendant would receive a six month reduction on each charge because of his guilty plea and clean record.
Mohamad was sentenced to 30 months and three strokes for both the first and second charge, to be served consecutively, which brings his total sentence to five years' imprisonment and six strokes of the cane.
Mohamad was allowed to call his wife in Indonesia before he was taken to Jerudong Prison to serve his sentence.

My concern is that the schools in Brunei should have be more aware of these problems with teachers in schools, but now a days it's not really shocking if the question is why teachers do it but the question of why these girls are not acting or dressed appropriately in school which may lead to temptations and molestation. Some people may perceive that all the problems happened like the above story would be the teachers fault, but in my days in school, the girls were seriously inappropriately mannered tempting and seducing teachers and the boys in school no other less just for fun not knowing that they're putting their life on the line for predators in the perverted world of the now especially in our digital and cyber world where men and boys alike are exposed to sexual temptations from the never ending porn which can be easily accessed from anywhere in the web.
Every issues about how the society perceives our nature to blame on others is rising to an alarming level where educators can no longer be trusted, children's are ill mannered and good parenting are no longer practiced which also leads us to the world where ignorance and blame are the only choices for the society that we live in today. In my opinion, parents should teach their children to not show sexual arising attitude as it may inflict in the inception of a predator to strike on them in the first place.
