Version in English below.

SSB Labs, vad händer under 2012?

IN ENGLISH:

We are now only a few days before Christmas and the New Year. Therefore it fits in well to do a little recap on the past year and a little peek into the coming year.

Kista Idea Lab, what was that?
Kista Idea Lab was a time-limited project in the district of Kista. The project was conducted as part of the local development of a new library concept: Kista Idea City. Key ideas in this project was new media, participatory culture and cross-border partnerships.
Inspired by the possibilities behind the London-based libraries Idea Stores and the Kista-based ICT cluster Kista Science City, we investigated the possibilities for library innovation through new partnerships in a Triple Helix model. Much of this activity was conducted in the pilot plant Idea Stores and the Kista-based ICT cluster Kista Science City, we investigated the possibilities for library innovation through new partnerships in a Triple Helix model (collaboration between academia/research, public sector and enterprise). Much of this activity was conducted in the pilot plant Digital Art Center. The project lasted until March 31, 2011 and had two main thrusts: exploring the possibilities of the mobile library and discovering the potential of collaboration between key sectors of local society. In Kista, we focused on conversations and networking with representatives from public education, research, business and the public sector.

SSB Labs, what will happen in 2012?
We are now taking our good experiences from the project work in Kista with us into an enlarged ambition to create a comprehensive digitally oriented innovation lab serving all public libraries in Stockholm. Our overall aim is to create an experimental forum for digital library innovation. We are now entering an exciting developmental phase when we, in 2012, will be able to reap the benefits of the intensive basic work done during 2011 at our Digital Services dept to ensure a stable and flexible digital environment for the future development of the digital library: the launch of the Stockholm Public Libraries new website Biblioteket.se, our new mobile Web, our new ideas about e-books and preparation of a more structured and dedicated presence in social media, like blogs, Facebook, Twitter and Google+. In 2012, we’ll proceed with the overall development in all these areas, adding also the dimension of the Digital in physical phase. Here is an exciting potential to make a much more meaningful and interesting way than before linking our physical library with the digital library, including our presence in social media. New technologies such as RFID, indoor positioning, QR codes, 3D, visualization tools, embedded technologies, voice control, etc. give us an unprecedented opportunity to seriously implement the vision of libraries as physical and digital venues. Only the imagination and the economy is the limit for this development!

SSB Labs is still at a concept stage and we can not expect that everything will happen overnight. What the lab finally becomes and what we can deliver depends on the resources we will be able to dispose of and the commitment that we can inspire among employees and users. But in 2012, we will work hard to develop SSB Labs into an exciting added value for anyone who loves libraries in physical and digital form, and last but not least, for those who still have not discovered the scores and the potential of libraries!”>Digital Art Center.

Welcome to follow us on this exciting journey, you are a very important part of this! Merry Holidays and a Happy New Year!

Here are some curated documentation (presentations, blog posts and tweets) from Internet Librarian International conference in London last week: http://www.scoop.it/t/internet-librarian-international-2011.
An unusual number of interesting contributions this year, so I do recommend a deeper look!

My own presentation (short version: http://kistaidealab.se/?p=1689) was about the current transformation of the Internet as we know it, and how these changed conditions affect libraries’ digital strategy work. We need to change perspective completely if we in the future want to be able reach out to our users in the sealed information bubbles that are currently being created by all the increasingly personalized search interfaces. Now the digital library isn’t solely about our own websites but just as much about strategic presence in all kinds of channels where digital conversations are taking place. This question is central for the Stockholm Public Libraries, in our ongoing work to formulate a comprehensive and proactive digital strategy that includes both our own systems and social media.

The biggest event in the Swedish library world, Biblioteksdagarna 2011, has just been celebrated in Visby, Gotland. This year’s theme was ”Free access”.
SSB Labs was there too, together with almost 600 librarians from all over Sweden, enjoying free access to interactive sessions, networking, un-expected meetings, sunny weather and last, but not least, a clean beautiful environment in the magic medieval city of Visby.

A large part of the attendees were also active as presenters and workshop facilitators, and quite a few of us came from the Stockholm Public Libraries: Inga Lundén (above), Stockholm Librarian in Stockholm and president of the Swedish Library Association, opened up the conference, Daniel Andersson held an inspiring working group about the development of open and free digital services for public libraries, Nina Holmqvist and Britta Palm shared their experiences with working with LEAN, Alireza Afshari participated in a session on hospital library services, Anna-Stina Takala talked about the new online library enquiry service ”Bibblan svarar”, Elisabeth Aldstedt och Johanna Hansson participated in a panel on library management and Harriet Aagaard was part of a session on indexing of fiction literature.

SSB Labs organised two experimental outdoor discovery walks, facilitated by Åke Nygren in cooperation with Martha Johansson (PassionCloud.org) and Johan Carlström (Swedish National Heritage Board + blogger on Dead Session).

The first walk was a hands-on journey into the world of Geocaching. The walk included also a brief introduction to Gowalla, a location based mobile service similar to Foursquare, and with a growing number of users in the nordic countries. Gowalla is similar to Geocaching but it also differs to geocaching in the way technology is used, how locations are shared and how community is built. Our idea was to experience these similarities and differences by means of using them parallel. For the event we prepared a Gowalla trip with spots covering both storytelling issues and historic references. At two locations, ”Pippi Longstockings in the candy shop” and ”Corpus Christi”, we searched and finally found corresponding geocaches.

It was great fun and a good learning experience! Geocaching and Gowalla trips are two examples of collaborative ”treasure hunting” activitites that can be used as tools for storytelling, learning and group identity building. In other words: useful tools for libraries and very much in tune with the theme of this years Biblioteksdagarna: ”Free access”. Geocaching and location based services give us almost limitless freedom to create our own spaces, discover new connections, create contemporary storytelling and learn from history! Johan Carlström ended the walk with a short introduction to Platsr, a location based service developed by the Swedish National Heritage Board. With Platsr our digitized culture heritage can be shared by means of mobile phones, combining collected official data with user generated content. This summer a Platsr app for iPhone and Android will be released.

The second discovery walk, FailCamp & Matchmaking, aimed at exploring the potential of converting failed projects into something successful. The idea behind: a project that has been unsuccessful, or a complete failure, might find new inspiration and growth in another context, with a different twist, and even run by a new project manager and/or a new organisation.

In order to try out a physical framework for the experiment we had prepared a Gowalla trip that started in the Almedalen library. After a meditative silent walk in the nearby Park we went to a sandy part near the sea, for this occasion renamed ”The place of the unknown skills”, where the participants were asked to express their ”hidden skill” by writing a figure in the sand.

After sharing our hidden skills we continued to the ”Fail” spot, a place for failed projects. After some interesting project fail sharing even the weather started to fail: rain started to pour down and a cold wind hit us, a very symbolic gesture from the gods It made us hurry back to the warmth inside the Almedalen library, while wrapping up our morning experiences. We all agreed that our FailCamp walk was an interesting adventure, including the fact that the event coincidentally had been scheduled on Friday the 13th…

Last Thursday we celebrated the first anniversary of Digital Art Center, together with old and new friends from Kista Science City and from the Stockholm public libraries. Quite a few interesting new art works and installations were exposed: Green Screen Game (Stockholm university/Computer Science) 3D-drawer – James Acres, Artengine Ottawa (CA), J-Dome – Head Tracking software demo, Mindball multiplayer – Interactive Productline, Scratch Programming Software – MIT Media Lab and art works made by pupils involved in the DAC Nest (DAC-nästet) and the ICT Upper Secondary School of Sundbyberg (IT-gymnasiet Sundbyberg) .

The event was an opportunity for us, together with the ICT Upper Secondary School of Sundbyberg, to showcase our common efforts to develop the concept Internet Helpdesk in our organisations. In their case it’s about assisting pupils to get on track with their ICT needs, and for us it’s about helping citizens in general with Internet and ICT support. The service is currently implemented in Kista, Rinkeby and Tensta libraries and step by step more libraries in the Stockholm area will join this network for digital inclusion.

The Stockholm Public Library Labs presence in DAC is about prototyping the library of the future, showcasing concepts and adressing the impact of digital media in everyday life of librarians and library users alike. Two of our current main topics are The mobile library and Digital Inclusion. Stockholm Public Libraries recently launched a mobile web app, with an easy to handle interface and powerful search features. Very soon it will also enable download of direct and seemless download of e-books, which will be a huge step forward towards a more attractive e-reading experience. Later on we’ll also dig into the issue of mobile learning, exploring the possibilities for effective language learning by means of mobile e-books. Read more about the development of the mobile web on Digitala biblioteket (in Swedish)
