The Pleasures of Slowing Down

The Pleasures of Slowing Down by Dj Magyar / Ayabassca on Mixcloud

It was one of those days that the sun was out the entire day, but it was foggy inside. Inside my apartment from smoking too much and inside my heart from things on my mind. I like to clear things up by listening to some tunes, and late in the night I started composing this mixtape, and finally put it out on my Mixcloud by 4AM in the morning.

I included a wide selection of styles, from experimental jazzy/classical compositions (Kayo Dot, Nils Petter Molvaer, Bar Kokhba Sextet), via some electronic, triphoppy stuff (Massive Attack, Apollo 440, Fujiya And Miyagi) to some atmospheric dub and folk tunes.

Step back and slow down!

Not because I’m lazy

But this one comes best without any comment, just listen.

I’m off to Spain, remember to be nice to your computer!

Greenwood Sharps - Leucosia

Tagged Stumplecrunck, and that’s one exactly fit.
Took me a bit to get used to the sound, but worth the effort.

Laid back, atmospheric sounds, layered and subtile.
Great for those late night working sessions.

Roland Juno-106 / Renkas - Christabella EP

Roland needs no introduction in the world of music production. This Japanese vintage gear is still used a lot in modern music productions. The beats of the classic TR-808 drum machine can be found in tracks from most producers, and quite some have dedicated tracks or lyrics to this machine. It’s a must-have in your analog rack, and street values nowadays are higher than the original $1000 price tag.

Less famous, but more widely available and affordable is the Juno-106 synthesizer. With its distinctive sound you will however probably recognize it, as the synth, manufactured from 1984 - 1988, is still being used by a number of well-known artists such as Moby, Daft Punk, Justice, The Chemical Brothers and The Black Eyed Peas. The video above showcases how to get the magic flowing from this terrific instrument.

Renkas, a scion from the NON records family and originally a graphic designer from Ukraine, uses this instrument as his trademark on his latest EP ‘Christabella’. Check out his warm and soulful tracks with the obvious 80s dressing from the 106. (and don’t miss the release party tomorrow in EKKO, Utrecht!)

Wiley - Numbers In Action (ZDot Remix)

Schlachthofbronx, such a simple name to say, such a hard name to spell. Impler tends to become a forgotten track, witch is a pity. The contrast in this song is so lovely! Get it!

Amon Tobin - Surge (16Bit Remix)

Peru’s pride in the seventies: El Polen, a folk/rock/pop/fusion band which became famous in 1972 for their hippie sounds. Apparently they didn’t sell that much at that time, or their sounds weren’t recognised during the seventies since you pay 100 dollars on eBay for a LP. Maybe the local folks just couldn’t afford a turntables an LP’s at that time, witch results in shortage 40 years later.

Whatever, this pride is bringing Chong-x to a Moombahton masterpiece, he remixed “Valicha” recently and the result is, compared to the original not very surprising. But compared to other Moombahton songs at this time the song is very inspiring. Bringing an entire new genre to the rapidly growing Moombahton movement.

Autodidakt ft Spoek Mathambo - Fake Fred Perry (Munchi Is Muito Random Rmx)

Yes, that wakes you up!! I don’t know what unearthly powers Munchi uses to produce killer tracks like this, but he did it again! You might remember Spoek Mathambo from the Schlachthofbronx track Nasty Bass, but he also delivered a outstanding solo-album “Mshini Wam” containing a Joy Division cover with this impressive video.

The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band - PIMP

Steeldrums aye!! The instrument, originally from Trinidad & Tobago are used in various music styles (oh yes, hold on, here comes Boney M supercharged with steeldrum) but this track mixes latin and reggae influences together in a funky funky tune.

The small record company Mocambo from Hamburg released this vinyl single of The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band (from Trinidad & Tobago) in 2008, but I couldn’t find much about the band, the track nor the original release date.

The sound became famous in 2003, when 50 Cent released a track called PIMP, featuring the lead sample from this record. Since Mocambo released the single with the same name and it came out after 50 Cents track, it is often believed that The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band is actually a cover of the 50c track (even whosampled.com gets it wrong, boy-o-boy!!).

But ehm, no, clearly, Bacao was first, then came the rapper. It is striking though that both records are released with the same title, and I’m willing to believe that Mocambo did name their Bacao release - which they remastered from an old dusty 8-track tape - after the 50 Cent hitsingle.

A lil’ mo’ on The Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band

PS. can someone please set the record straight in the Wikipedia page of the 50c track?

EDIT. Whoaaa! My first blogpost here and turns out I found a mare’s nest. Here’s the reply I got from the attentive folks at WhoSampled.com:

[…] this is not actually an obscure unknown original dug up by the Mocambo 45 label, but just a clever marketing ploy - please see this article about the label. It explains that the label is centred around a house band which records and releases all of the music under different pseudonyms, including ‘The Bacao Rhythm and Steel Band’. […] The label owner says in the interview when asked about his favourite releases on the label he says ‘The Bacao’s PIMP, because everyone thinks it is the original to the 50 Cent tune’.
