Want to build positive relationships? Then make sure not to commit the following 10 things that disrupt relationships: Giving hurtful comments. Are you hurting others by your lack of tact? You might think that you’re being helpful, but your intentions might have hurt the other party instead. Put yourself in others’ shoes first. If it’s not a comment you appreciate hearing yourself, then perhaps it’s not something others will appreciate either. Giving solutions when the person is really looking for a listening ear. Probably an understatement: A lot of times what people want is a listening ear. Deep down, people have solutions to the problems they are facing – they are just looking for someone to share their frustrations with because they have had a long and hard day. I had a friend who would always butt in with suggestions whenever I shared my frustrations. Our conversations became stifling – in the end I stopped talking about them altogether because I wasn’t getting the refuge I wanted. Be more conscious of what the other party is looking for, and adjust accordingly to fit that. Being judgmental; Thinking you are above others. No one likes to be judged or labeled. If you are constantly judging others for what they do/say, it might be good to reflect that upon yourself. Putting someone off doesn’t make someone a better person; it just makes him/her appear insecure. Humility is a timeless virtue that’s appreciated by everyone. Being defensive to criticism. How well do you respond to criticism? Do you become defensive and wall yourself up? Or do you graciously take it into stride and use the criticism constructively for growth? Learn to deal with critical people – it might be the most important skill you can ever acquire. Telling people what to do. Most of us don’t like it when people try to boss us around. Learning to energize people and get them on board a common vision is more empowering than trying to order people around. Being aloof; Not being responsive. I have experienced situations where acquaintances do not respond to correspondences, possibly because they do not see them as important. Subsequently I form a very bad impression of them, and deprioritize their requests when they seek my help later on. Thinking you know it all. The more I learn, the more I realize what I don’t know. There is a wealth of knowledge out there for us to learn. Thinking you know everything, rejecting new methods and vehemently insisting on your ways prevents you from connecting with others. Be open to trying new things. Being a complainer. It’s okay to complain every once in a while, but doing it all too often puts off people. Complaining too much makes you an energy vortex – it becomes draining to be around you. People like to be around positive people, not energy vampires. If you are one, it’s not too late to change – start by focusing on positive things around you and work from there. Not following up on things you agreed on. One of my pet peeves is when people don’t follow up on things they agree on (be it appointments, favors, etc). I think it makes them unreliable and leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. These are the same people that I make a note not to work with in the future. Not listening. Are you present in your conversations with others? Or is your mind on something else? When conversing with someone, learn to not only listen, but listen actively. Seek out the underlying message behind what someone is saying.

The Playbook. 9 Rules to Pick Up Girls by Barney Stinson

How to pick up chicks.

“The Playbook” is a new book by fictional character Barney Stinson from “How I Met Your Mother”. “The Playbook” contains every scam, con, hustle, hoodwink, gambit, flimflam, stratagem and bamboozle Barney ever used — or ever hopes to use — to pick up chicks and give them the business.

1. “The Don’t Drink That”

Location: Bar

Action: Run to the girl, grasp her by the hand.

Dialogue:

You Whoa, don’t drink that. I saw some guy slip something in there.

Girl What? Who?

You Uh… that guy.

Girl Thank You.

2. “The Mrs. Stinsfire”

Location: Girl’s dorm

Action: Make up like Robin Williams in “Mrs. Doubtfire” from Chris Columbus’ movie.

Dialogue:

Girl Now Kappas, after our disciplinary hearing for lewd behavior last semester, we have been signed a new housemom. I’d like You to meet Mrs. Stinsfire.

You Hello, girls!

3. “The Lorenzo Von Matterhorn”

Location: Bar

Action: To perform the Lorenzo Von Matterhorn, here’s what You’ll need: Basic knowledge of Web site design and a very unique fake name. So, think of Your fake name right now. Have You got it? Good.

Now, select Your target. Preferably a girl with a real ni… phone.

Dialogue:

You Yeah, it’s me.

Girl Do I know You?

You I’m Lorenzo Von Matterhorn.

Girl Are You, like, famous or something?

You Yes. What a refreshing change of pace. Nice to meet You…

Girl Shelly.

You Shelly. Once again, I’m Lorenzo Von Matterhorn. Spelled like it sounds two “T”s. Lorenzo Von Matterhorn. Ciao.

Then, as soon as You’re gone, she gets out her phone and does an Internet search for Lorenzo Von Matterhorn. And that’s when she discovers. A series of fake Web sites, all devoted to the incredible life of Lorenzo Von Matterhorn. There’s the fake business article about Lorenzo, the reclusive billionaire. The fake Explorers Club newsletter describing his balloon trek to the North Pole as a feat of pure daring and imagination. The fake medical journal featuring the heartbreaking story of doctors telling him penis reduction surgery isn’t an option. And by the time You get back.

You Hi, Shelly, uh, I hate to be forward, but can I buy You a cup of coffee?

Girl Yes! Please.

You What does coffee go for these days, $50?

Girl Oh, Lorenzo.

And it is on.

4. “The SNASA”

Location: Bar

Action: Talking about secret NASA

Dialogue:

Girl Wow, You’re an astronaut?

You Shh! I’m actually in a top secret government space program called Secret NASA or SNASA.

Girl Wow, SNASA.

You Mm-mm.

Girl Do You go to the Moon and stuff?

You Well, not the Moon You’re familiar with, though I have been to the Smoon.

Girl Wow, the Smoon.

5. “The Cheap Trick”

Location: Bar

Action: Create an image of musician of rock or metal band

Dialogue:

You I’m the bass player for “Cheap Trick”.

6.“The He’s Not Coming”

Location: The observation deck of the Empire State Building

Action: To perform “The He’s Not Coming” here’s what You’ll need: The observation deck of the Empire State Building. Are You there? Good. For generations, this has been the spot New Yorkers have chosen for their romantic reunions with long-estranged lovers, so all You have to do is walk up to every girl You see and say… “He’s not coming”.

Dialogue:

You He’s not coming.

Girl He’s not? But we agreed. We always said we’d meet here. On this night. I’m such a fool.

You Shh, shh, shh…

7. “The Ted Mosby”

Location: Bar

Action: Dress up like Ted Mosby and say how You got left at the altar

Dialogue:

You I got left at the altar.

8. “The My Penis Grants Wishes”

Location: Bar

Action: Dress up like Alladin or lamp.

Dialogue:

Girl Really? A genie comes of it?

You Only if You rub it hard enough.

9. “The Scuba Diver”

Location: Bar

Action: Step one: tell a meddlesome female friend about “The Playbook”. Run play on one of her coworkers, king her so angry. She steals “the Playbook”.

Put on a scuba suit and tell her You’re going to do one more scam called “The Scuba Diver” on the hot girl standing by the bar.

Your friend — let’s call her Lily — goes and talks to the girl and tells her everything about “The Playbook”. Now, here’s where it gets tricky. When Lily and the girl ask at “The Scuba Diver” is, about Your deep-seated insecurities which don’t really exist because — let’s face it — You’re awesome. Feeling bad for You, Lily talks You up to the girl, who then agrees to go get coffee with You.

And it… is… on.

A minimal interface theme for Google Reader

Helvetireader

Helvetireader is a userscript that pares down Google Reader to what I consider to be the essentials. In particular, it's made for looking at just unread feeds in the expanded view, using Keyboard Shortcuts instead of on-screen buttons. It’s not going to suit how everyone uses Google Reader, so you can take the CSS and personalise to your hearts content!

All you need is a browser that supports userscripts (see below) and, of course, Helvetica.

Latest Development

Follow Helvetireader on Twitter to know when you need to refresh, and use @replies to send feedback

  • Don't forget, because styling Google Reader is such a large un-ending task Helvetireader, it will never be perfect! ;) about 6 hours ago
  • @toodamnninja versions 1 and 2 are kept as separate user scripts, but version1 will not be updated about 14 hours ago
  • @leebo Yep, just got to the user script and Chrome installs it as an extension! Ignore the privacy warning though -it doesn't do any of that about 15 hours ago

How to use the theme

→ Install as a userscript for Firefox with Greasemonkey, Opera, Google Chrome (Nightly Build only) or any Webkit browser (Safari, Omniweb etc.) with GreaseKit installed. I also recommend installing the Show Feed Favicons userscript to add the final touches.

The Helvetireader user script is ideal for using with Fluid.app (Here's how) or Mozilla Prism to create a standalone application. There's even a Fluid App Icon you can use.

OfficeTalk

Ever wish you could share information broadly within your organization without emailing everyone? Ever wish you could keep the pulse of what people in your organization think is interesting? Microblogging has that potential. OfficeTalk is a concept test to explore the value of microblogging in the enterprise. OfficeTalk is deployed internally at Microsoft and has seen over 10,000 visitors and hundreds of messages posted daily. We're now making OfficeTalk available to a few customers in a small pilot test. Because this is an early-stage concept, the OfficeTalk microblogging experience itself looks very similar to other well-known services. The key difference is that the enterprise owns the data since the OfficeTalk server is hosted in the customer’s organization. We will be releasing updates periodically to test more of the ideas we're thinking about. Stay tuned!

OfficeTalk is in a limited private pilot for research purposes for now. If you'd like your firm to be involved in the pilot and are willing to participate in the user research, let us know. Since this is a research project, only a very small number of pilots will be considered.

20 PC Shortcuts You Need to Know

What I've always liked about Windows is that there are many ways to perform popular tasks. Say you want to print something; you could navigate to the file menu and select print, or you can press the Ctrl button and the letter P. Ctrl+P is just one example of a keyboard shortcut. Shortcuts are combinations of two or more keys that perform a particular function when you press them together.

I prefer to use shortcuts whenever possible. They're easy and they save a lot of time and mouse-clicking. Here are my top 20 shortcuts that you may not know about—but should.

What you'll need:

Windows 7

Get to know the basics

There are certain shortcuts I use all day, every day. Whether you're working with photos and music, or within documents or spreadsheets, these tips will help you be a speed demon.

  • Copy a selected item: Ctrl+C

  • Cut a selected item: Ctrl+X

  • Paste a selected item: Ctrl+V

  • Undo an action: Ctrl+Z

  • Select everything: Ctrl+A

  • Print: Ctrl+P

Manage open windows

Chances are, you use your PC to do a lot of things at once. Shortcuts go a long way towards cutting the clutter.

  • Minimize the Window
Windows logo key + Down Arrow
Minimizing a window is a surefire way to see what's underneath it. And it's fast to use the shortcut. If the window is maximized already (covering the entire screen) it'll go to “normal” size. And if it's normal size, it'll minimize entirely.

  • Maximize the Window
Windows logo key + Up Arrow
Maximizing windows works the same way.

  • Switch between open windows
    ALT + Tab
If you have lots of open windows and you're not sure exactly which one you need, press ALT + Tab, and get a quick thumbnail view of all open windows.

Then, while holding down the ALT key, press the tab key multiple times until you get to the window you want.

  • Display the desktop
    Windows logo key + D
Use this shortcut when you want to minimize a lot of open windows at once to check something on your desktop. It's a cinch to go from a cluttered view to a clean one.

  • Get even funkier with window management

It may surprise you to learn that there are even more options when it comes to dealing with your open windows and programs—but there are.

    • Multitask with multiple monitors
Ctrl + Windows logo key + Shift + Arrow
Do you use more than one monitor at a time? Now you can shift an open window to your other monitor in less than a second.

    • Make Snap a snap.
      Windows logo key + Arrow
If you haven't checked out Snap, you're missing out. It's the perfect way to compare two documents side by side. Use the shortcut for Snap to make it snappier.
While pressing the Windows logo key, click the right or left arrow to snap your document to one side.
Select another document, and do the same thing to compare them side by side.

    Manage tasks

You're probably more than familiar with the Ctrl+Alt+Delete shortcut to manage tasks. But did you know that there are shortcuts for performing some of those tasks directly?

    • Open Task Manager
      Ctrl + Shift + Escape
This simple shortcut whisks you straight to Task Manager—without any intermediary steps.

    • Lock your PC or switch users
      Windows logo key + L
This simple shortcut locks your PC with a single click and instantly displays the log in screen.

Work with items on the taskbar

The Windows 7 taskbar is big, flexible, and feature rich. You can use shortcuts to make working with it even easier.

    • Open a new instance of a program
Shift + Click a taskbar icon
I like Internet Explorer tabs—but sometimes it's easier to launch a new browser. It's simple: just click the Internet Explorer icon while holding down Shift.

    • Toggle between documents
Ctrl + Click a taskbar icon
Let's say you have five open Word documents. You can click on the Word icon in the taskbar to view thumbnails of each. And if you press Ctrl before you click on the icon, you can scroll through each one fully.

    Display your way

No matter how you want to view your PC, shortcuts help you get there faster.

    • Choose a presentation display mode
      Windows logo key + P
Whether you're giving a presentation or are using multiple monitors, it's simple to switch settings.

    • Zoom in, zoom out
Windows logo key + +/ Windows logo key + -
This lets you zoom in to better see small text on a Web page or to check out the pixels on a photo.

And when you need it … get help

F1. It's the simplest shortcut out there. When all else fails, and you're just not sure what to do, press F1. These are just a small sampling of all the shortcuts available. View the complete list.

    Keyboard shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts are combinations of two or more keys that, when pressed, can be used to perform a task that would typically require a mouse or other pointing device. Keyboard shortcuts can make it easier to interact with your computer, saving you time and effort as you work with Windows and other programs.

Most programs also provide accelerator keys that can make it easier to work with menus and other commands. Check the menus of programs for accelerator keys. If a letter is underlined in a menu, that usually means that pressing the Alt key in combination with the underlined key will have the same effect as clicking that menu item.

Pressing the Alt key in some programs, such as Paint and WordPad, shows commands that are labeled with additional keys that you can press to use them.

You can also create new keyboard shortcuts to open programs. For more information, see Create keyboard shortcuts to open programs.
