I originally drew this to submit to an art contest at the American Dairy Goat Association annual show, but I never got around to mailing it. Oh well.
Based on an old photograph of two of my goats - that kid is 6 years old now and a momma herself (it’s B.J., for those of you who know her!) and momma Gabby is now 9 years old and a grandma. :)

Kirlain photography is a method of photographing the electrical discharge of various objects, the process involves placing said object upon a photographic plate and running a voltage across it. This outlines the subject, in this case a set of leaves, with a corona of electrical energy that is only visible on the plate.

MALACHITE BUTTERFLY (Siproeta stelenes meriodonalis) © pbertner
Siproeta stelenes, commonly known as the Malachite, is a neotropical brush-footed butterfly (family Nymphalidae). The malachite has large wings that are black and brilliant green or yellow-green on the uppersides and light brown and olive green on the undersides. It is named for the mineral malachite, which is similar in color to the bright green on the butterfly’s wings. The wingspread is typically between 8.5 and 10 cm (3.3 and 3.9 in). The malachite, one of the most common butterfly species, it has a range from northern South America to the southern United States.
Adults feed on flower nectar, rotting fruit, dead animals, and bat dung. Females lay eggs on the new leaves of plants in the Acanthaceae family, especially ruellia. The larvae are horned, spiny black caterpillars with red markings.

Symbols.
“Quick,” the Mommy said. “Draw the river.”
As if he’d just discovered this river, as if he’d just discovered the whole world, she said to draw a new map, a map of the world just for himself. His own personal world.
“I don’t want you to just accept the world as it’s given,” she said.
She said, “I want you to invent it. I want you to have that skill. To create your own reality. Your own set of laws. I want to try and teach you that.”
The boy had a pen now, and she said to draw the river in the book. Draw the river, and draw the mountains up ahead. And name them, she said. Not with words he already knew, but to make up new words that didn’t already mean a bunch of other stuff.
To create his own symbols.
The little boy thought with the pen in his mouth and the book open in his lap, and after a little, he drew it all.
