Born: Copenhagen; Childhood: Copenhagen/London/Canterbury; Home: Hackney, London
Grew up in Canterbury in its "Canterbury Scene" heyday: the times of Caravan, Gong, Hatfield and the North, National Health, Soft Machine and a few others. Bit of a prog-rocker, then - It was inevitable. Also much influenced by Johns Cale and Martyn, Nick Drake, along with other folk artists.
Studied classical guitar. Gave up around 18, for folk acoustic and electric. Played in bands at university. Almost got a record deal. Didn't.
Became a lawyer (eek!). Music and other creative clients. Ran own law firm. Did some interesting work, won some big cases. Learned a lot about copyright, infringement, sampling. Made lots of musician and producer friends. Messed around with project studios. Started classical guitar again. Rehearsed with Motörhead (once).
Met Shem McCauley (sadly deceased 2012) and Simon Rogers. They were a great remix and progressive house team (as Ramp and Slacker). Simon was a founder member of Incantation, a member of the Fall, artist under various names, and co-producer of Lightning Seeds amongst others. Now mainly does film and tv music.
Stopped being a lawyer. Became a consultant and worked on my music.
Played some demos to Mr Rogers, early 2010. He liked them and co-produced my debut double-concept album, released June 2011 - self-classified!
Got help from friends, K[atherine] Sharp (from my original college band) and Anthony Jackson-Stubbs (pro vocalist and now http://www.funkimation.com
), also from daughters VHF (sings) and AHF (plays alto sax). Brother Christian did the cover. It's a family affair. Wife Jane and son Otto stood by idly with earplugs in...
Got a second album outlined. Working mixes on SoundCloud, mostly without vocals so far. Travelled the world (from my desk) looking for inspiration. The music references cultural diversity, philosophy, the human condition, astronomy, space and time. About to start the grown-up stuff of vocals and co-production with Mr Rogers, with a number of guests lined up to contribute, mostly vocals.
It's mostly all HS on the music, working in a compact studio, in Garageband and Logic with various outboard and software tools. Guitars are the main thing, but also lots of programming. Various MIDI-based guitars and other gizmos for instrumentation, arrangement, effects etc. Mr Rogers tidies it all up, overdubs and mixes - makes all the difference!
A lot of people have asked for a live thing, including music biz chums (who have all been really supportive), and there's a band of sorts in waiting, but, sadly, HS doesn't get out a lot!
Like all music pretty much, especially new folk, chill and electronica, when it's done well, also classical, old (very old) and new. Hate musicals. Can't stand them, in fact. Make me quite ill...
First Water: Sharks
Get Lost: alucidnation
Modern Music: Be Bop Deluxe
The Car Over The Lake Album: Ozark Mountain Daredevils
Play tennis - quite badly.
Read crime fiction mostly.
There you go, now you know.
