as i clicked through youtube the other day, i found this 'chenrezig' clip, which uses a song with the same name, from our 1998 new age pop project u:man:tek. the song is based on a chenrezig mantra recitation.

chenrezig is renowned as the embodiment of compassion in the tibetan buddhist tradition. whenever we are compassionate, or feel love for anyone, or for anything, we experience a taste of our own true nature.

i am not following buddhism myself. but in a world of growing polarities today, found in social contexts, in political points of view, in relations between human beings from different cultural backgrounds, in the fields of art, philosophy, religions, etc., i feel that compassion is a quantum leap forward towards understanding, acceptance, respect, tolerance, sharing, exchange, communication, etc.

wir waren pioniere

40 Jahre ist es her, dass die Ulmer Band Prof. Wolfff ihr erstes und einziges Album aufnahm. Ein Sammlerstück, nicht nur in Ulm. Von heute an ist dieses Album wieder im Handel - als Vinyl-Platte.

Deutschland 1971. Krautrock-Zeit. Die deutschen Musiker suchten eigene Wege, Rock zu spielen - meist zu englischen Texten. Es gab nur wenige Ausnahmen: "Ihre Kinder" oder die Politrocker "Floh de Cologne" und eine Band aus Ulm: Prof. Wolfff. "Wir waren damals Pioniere", sagt Sänger und Gitarrist Klaus-Peter Schweizer und erinnert sich, dass deutsche Texte damals heiß diskutiert wurden. Nicht nur deren Inhalte, sondern auch die Frage, ob man zu Rockmusik überhaupt deutsch singen sollte. "Nachdem unsere Platte erschienen war, bekam ich den Hinweis, dass sie im Rundfunk besprochen werden sollte." Natürlich wartete die Band gespannt darauf. Und dann kam der Verriss: Vor dieser Band müsse man warnen. Rockmusik und deutsche Texte, das ging ja gar nicht, so lautete der Tenor des Kritikers.

Was heute seltsam anmutet, ist nur aus der Zeit heraus zu verstehen. Deutsche Texte standen damals vor allem für Schlager. Der gehörte zur Generation der Eltern, von der sich Anfang der 70er Jahre die jungen Menschen distanzieren wollten - auch durch ihre Musik. "Musik war damals mehr als nur konsumierbarer Klang, sie hatte eine sozialpolitische Funktion", sagt Schweizer. "Die Leute kamen in Konzerte, um wirklich zuzuhören", sagt Gitarrist Fritz Herrmann (Friedrich Glorian). "Damals kamen gerade die Jugendhäuser auf. Nach unseren Konzerten wurde da ganz schön heftig diskutiert." Auch über die Texte der Band. "Einmal kamen die auf die Verhältnisse in Chile, die waren da so gut informiert, dass wir gar nicht mehr mithalten konnten", erinnert sich Organist Romi Schickle. Ausgelöst hatte die Diskussion der Titel "Hetzjagd", in dem Schweizer die Jagd auf Kommunisten aufs Rotwild übertragen hatte. Kostprobe: "Treiber lärmen, ja man hat die Spur / Schweißbedeckte Pferde jagen Rotwild nur / Den Geruch in der Nase und die Zunge hängt raus, / Der Kreis ist geschlossen, jetzt ist es bald aus. / Blutfäden rinnen, man begafft die Beute, / die Jagd war erfolgreich, zufrieden die Leute." Was damals die Rockfans teilte, ist von heute an wieder in der Originalversion erhältlich: das Album von Prof. Wolfff auf Vinyl mit dem Orginalcover und einem Booklet, das auch das Plakat zeigt, mit dem die Musiker für ihre Konzerte warben. Gezeichnet hat es Kraan-Bassist Hellmut Hattler.

Entstanden ist das Album im Oktober 1971 im Stuttgarter Studio des Jazzers Horst Jankowski. "Wir hatten damals keine Ahnung von der Arbeit im Studio", sagt Schickle. "Auch für die Leute im Studio waren wir völlige Exoten. Als Fritz seine Gitarre eingestellt hatte, meldete sich der Ton-Ingenieur mit dem Hinweis, dass die Gitarre verzerre. Da mussten wir erst mal erklären, dass dieser Klang gewollt sei."

Überhaupt die Technik: "Die Platte wurde damals auf vier Spuren mitgeschnitten. Das heißt, wir mussten alles komplett am Stück einspielen", sagt Schickle. "Wenn einer einen Fehler machte, hieß das: Alles nochmal von vorn." Reich geworden sind die Ulmer damals nicht. Ganze 400 Platten verkaufte die Plattenfirma Metronome damals. Die sind heute gesuchte Sammlerstücke - weltweit, ein Blick ins Internet zeigt: Prof. Wolfff hat nicht nur in Ulm noch viele Fans.

Drei der fünf Musiker von Prof. Wolfff haben die Musik zu ihrem Beruf gemacht: Romi Schickle betreibt in Neu-Ulm das Studio 2, produziert dort Künstler wie Chris Norman, Chris Thompson und Siggi Schwarz.

Fritz Herrmann wechselte nach Prof. Wolfff von der Gitarre zum Bass, studierte an der Jazzschool in München, ging nach Indien, wo er indische Quertrommel lernte. Unter dem Künstlernamen Friedrich Glorian lebte er als Musiktherapeut in Frankreich und wohnt seit 2002 wieder in Ulm.

Klaus-Peter Schweizer wurde Komponist und Texter, hatte Mitte der 80er Jahre als Interpret mit dem Titel "Dreizehn Tage und Nächte" einen Top-TenErfolg. Bassist Detlev Zech starb 1995, Schlagzeuger Michael Sametinger starb 2008.

...Ein weiterer alter Bekannter wirkt im Ulmer Stadthaus im Zentrum des Interesses. Domenico Strazzeri hat mit seiner „Strado Compagnia Danza“ zu weiteren Flugträumen im Berblingerjahr einen satten Viertelstünder aufs Parkett gelegt. Zum Jahresausklang wird an gleicher Stelle die Premiere in erweiterter Fassung herausgebracht: „Schwere Flügel“. Im Halbschatten biegen sich drei verschleierte Figuren zur Kegelform. Darauf beginnen Visuals (von Katrin Jedon, „2av“) in Spiralmustern zu rotieren. Die bildhaften Bewegungen verstärken sich zur geflügelten Dreidimensionalität. Kreiseln da Berblingers Flügel im Meier-Bau? Das Ganze wirkt absolut schwerelos. Das Movie verebbt. Drei Gestalten schälen sich heraus. Die schwarz Gekleidete (Domenico Strazzeri) verlässt das Revier, die beiden Weißen starten ihren ausdruckstänzerischen Pas de deux. Abstraktion und Körperlichkeit zeigt sich als spannender Mix, der von den perkussiven Interface-Sounds und chinesischen Wölbbrett-Zitherklängen Friedrich Glorians gespeist wird.

Gefahr droht: Ein Tänzer umkreist den anderen, springt plötzlich auf dessen Rücken. Zeitgleich wirft Strazzeri eine Flex in einer gleichzeitig illuminierten Plastikbox an – für ohrenbetäubenden Lärm und (abgeschirmte) Funkenflüge. Schließlich verebbt das ganze Spektakel, die beiden Tänzer (Daniele Ricci und David Roßteutscher) verwandeln sich in der Stille wieder zum rotierenden Kegel, dessen grafische Elemente dann die Dunkelheit verschluckt...

Er ist ein künstlerischer Weltenbummler... Seit einigen Jahren bereichert Friedrich Glorian wieder die Ulmer Kulturlandschaft, kooperiert z.B. mit der Strado Compagnia Danza, baute das Beatstomper-Percussion-Projekt mit sozial benachteiligten Jugendlichen auf, begnügt sich dabei nicht mit den regionalen Wirkungsmöglichkeiten. Immer wieder arbeitet er für internationale Auftrageber. Der agile Künstler ist ein Tausendsassa. Aktuell arbeitet er an einem Donauprojekt. Die Verse eines Wiener Dichters werden durch Klangaufnahmen und Videoproduktionen, zu einer außergewöhnlichen Installation. Ideen für die nächsten Projekte schlummern längst in seinem Kopf. Ganz ohne öffentliche und private Förderung wird es aber nicht funktionieren. „Kunst schafft den Menschen die Möglichkeit zur Auseinandersetzung mit sich selbst und mit der Gesellschaft“, sagt Friedrich Glorian.

It will use the upcoming EU political and financial negotiations for the period 2014-2020 as a timely opportunity to develop and sharpen the arguments used when advocating for arts and culture. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to contribute to a strengthened recognition of the role of arts and culture in the development of our European societies. The concrete campaign objectives focus on improving the quality and quantity of support that the sector receives from 2 key EU policies (the Culture Programme – providing direct support to cultural co-operation projects, and EU regional development policies – supporting cultural interventions as key contributions to social, economic and territorial development).
