konzertsaal / weiss areal, neu-ulm.germanyduring the late 60s to 80s, konzertsaal (concert hall) used to be the very performing space/club in the ulm/neu-region for rock bands of fame and lesser known. it was the the place where we used to hang out or play gigs there. during the last 15 years or so, the konzertsaal successfully hosted one of the few independant theater groups of ulm/neu-ulm. but that's it, the building will be pulled down later this year, making space for slick and expensive new appartment buildings. nostalgic retro-spection...

enjoy.'guzheng & nuzheng miniatures' is an ongoing music recording project, where i upload experimental guzheng music, using the chinese traditional acoustic string instrument guzheng, an 8 track hardware live looper and various effect pedals.
i re-arrange and re-design the recorded live loop tracks, exploring the sound files and creating re-defined songs/pieces/variations/compositions. it's an alchemical process of re-fining sound-matter.

as i clicked through youtube the other day, i found this 'chenrezig' clip, which uses a song with the same name, from our 1998 new age pop project u:man:tek. the song is based on a chenrezig mantra recitation.
chenrezig is renowned as the embodiment of compassion in the tibetan buddhist tradition. whenever we are compassionate, or feel love for anyone, or for anything, we experience a taste of our own true nature.
i am not following buddhism myself. but in a world of growing polarities today, found in social contexts, in political points of view, in relations between human beings from different cultural backgrounds, in the fields of art, philosophy, religions, etc., i feel that compassion is a quantum leap forward towards understanding, acceptance, respect, tolerance, sharing, exchange, communication, etc.
compassion is one of the intentions worth being adopted for the new year 2012.

biography
having been involved in music since 1965, originally with local rock bands, i started off a serious musical career some years later as lead guitar player with the 70s german prog rock band prof. wolfff, one of the first prog rock bands in germany to use german lyrics.
prof. wolfffstudies at the jazz school munich (1975-77, joe haider, adelhard roidinger) and training in north indian vocal music (dhrupad style) with r. fahimuddin khan dagar, vidur mallick, uday bhawalkar) and percussion (with raja chhatrapati singh, ramji upadhyaya) from 1982 to 1988 in india, provided a solid base for creative experiences in rock, fusion, world, experimental, electronic, and also with dance and theater projects.
dhrupadi had the opportunity to explore and practice sound healing, teach workshops and training courses mainly in europe, but also for a short period in ethiopia.
at present i compose music for contemporary and multimedia music/dance projects and art installations, perform my own music live on electric gushing, percussion (postworld improvised music / live looping / fx) and with multimedia music/dance projects. i also facilitate circledrumevents (community drumming) at festivals and for music therapy training.

circledrumeventsthe encounter with theater/movement opened my eyes to music and its healing virtues, and i got interested in and studied the mongolian overtone technique, north indian vocal and percussion (dhrupad style), yoga, body/breath awareness, healing aspects of sound/color and indian music therapy. based on this experience, i propose innerSounds relaxation/healing concerts with tibetan bowls, gongs and tubular bells.

quelle zur mündung - poesie der donau
eine visuelle klang-installation2. - 9. september im ulmer museum
flüsse bedürfen der poesie...
vergangene zivilisationen und poeten aller kulturen standen flüssen und gewässern auch immer eine symbolische, ja eine mythische bedeutung zu.das leitmotiv der installation bildet das gedicht "die donau" des wiener schriftstellers ferdinand schmatz. video-und klangkompositionen kontrastieren den poetischen text, provozieren unverhoffte hör- und blickpunkte, schaffen die imagination eines kreativen donau-europäischen cross-over.
vier projektionsflächen, als kreuzende achsen angeordnet, kommunizieren visuell und akustisch miteinander. der quelle im westen steht die mündung im osten gegenüber, der natur im süden der menschliche eingriff im norden. die installation überträgt klänge der donau in den ausstellungsraum, ein hydrophon (unterwasser-mikrofon) lädt die betrachter-zuhörer ein, in das klanggeschehen einzugreifen. so wird das wasser der donau nicht nur als lebensspendends element wahrnehmbar, sondern auch als träger energetischer information.

guzheng / fx / live looping
the guzheng, an ancient chinese string instrument, dates back over 4000 years dates back over 4000 years and has played an important role in chinese musical history as both a court and folk instrument. only recently it has been introduced into contemporary and experimental music.
fascinated by its pacifying sound, i love to play the guzheng in a rather meditative way. my studies of traditional music in india and a creative collaboration with indian musicians, took my playing the guzheng into an entirely different direction, applying the typical elements of raga music, like note bending, micro tonal intervals, playful ornaments, rhythmic patterns and the elaborated time cycles.
experiments with live looping and electronic manipulation has lead to the concept of the ‘nuzheng’.

cosmic reflections ist von der gleichnamigem kollagen-serie der malerin brigitte smith angeregt. 21 tableaux zeigen drei gruppen mit jeweils verschiedenen grundmotiven: der buddha, der mensch vor dem symbolisierten absoluten und der wegweiser. interessanterweise überlagern sich diese drei motive mit den drei bewusstseins-zuständen alter yogischer texte, die sich mit innerer erfahrung beschäftigen.

we are more (2010-2013) is a Europe-wide arts advocacy campaign set up by Culture Action Europe. It will use the upcoming EU political and financial negotiations for the period 2014-2020 as a timely opportunity to develop and sharpen the arguments used when advocating for arts and culture. The ultimate goal of the campaign is to contribute to a strengthened recognition of the role of arts and culture in the development of our European societies. The concrete campaign objectives focus on improving the quality and quantity of support that the sector receives from 2 key EU policies (the Culture Programme – providing direct support to cultural co-operation projects, and EU regional development policies – supporting cultural interventions as key contributions to social, economic and territorial development).
