@the_glendon Top Tracks of 2011

@The_Glendon Top Tracks of 2011

So it’s almost June and I thought I might as well still get this out. I had the list narrowed down by the end of the year, but it took me this long to get my shit together and do a write-up. And it’s getting worse. The first year I started at 50, now it’s creeping to 85.

Anyway, overall great year for music. I still find myself listening to a lot of these, despite it being mid-way through 2012.

As always, the rules I applied to myself were: only one track per artist (unless they happened to appear, be featured in, or remixed by, someone else). Also, these are really my most played tracks of the year and apply only to me. And it only places songs I’ve heard. I can’t listen to everything, natch. (Downloads links at the bottom.)

1. Midnight City - M83

One of my fave bands put out their gem of an album, and this single still gets a ton of play in my rotation.

2. Blue Truth - Jamie Woon

This song is… sly. I guess that’s the only way I can put it. Just meanders around and can adapts to whatever mood I’m in. Can be happy, melancholy, whatever, and it fits.

3. Out Getting Ribs - Zoo Kid

Never heard of this dude before. Haven’t really researched much other music. But heard this back in January of 2011 and it still gets lots of play. Like a new Billy Bragg with the hollow, stripped down sound.

4. I’m On One - DJ Khaled feat Lil Wayne, Drake & Rick Ross

This track actually reminds me a lot of M83’s Midnight City, but instead of dreamy vocals it’s chock-full of braggadocioio from Drake, a solid verse from Rick Ross with plenty of “hmmphs” or whatever that is he does, and Lil Wayne manages to not… detract.

5. Spank - The Naked and Famous

I already liked this track, but when @TrustTheDust had the genius idea to use it in this masterpiece of salad destruction, I fell hard for it. https://vimeo.com/26040703

6. Ego - Burial & Four Tet & Thom Yorke

Three pillars of musical goodness got together and made two awesome tracks. I love both, but this one still stands out.

7. Ice Cream - Battles (feat Matias Aguayo)

Battles is still one of the best bands I’ve ever seen live. Can’t wait to check them out again since this album dropped. This is probably their most single-y song on the album.

8. The Last Huzzah - Mr. Muthafuckin’ eXquire feat Despot, Das Racist, Danny Brown & El-P

Indie rap supergroup? Every verse on here is great, but El-P puts together what in my opinion is the best verse of 2011.

9. One Sunday Morning - Wilco

A 12:00 track? And it never gets redundant and boring. Well done Wilco. When I listen to this, I picture myself brunching in Chicago on a sunny June Sunday.

10. Get Away - Yuck

I love this Yuck album. Reminds me of some of my fave mid-90’s bands like Superdrag and Matthew Sweet. Grungy, low-fi and melodic. I would totally have gone to a Superdrag/Yuck show at Metro back in high school.

11. Monopoly - Danny Brown

This is the craziest track of the year. Danny Brown chews this up, and as he says, “literally shits all over” other rappers mix tapes.

12. Niggas in Paris - The Throne (Jay-Z & Kanye West)

I couldn’t not have Kanye on my annual list. And this is the best track of the Jay-Z/Kanye collaboration. Plus, Kanye embedded the term “That shit cray” into our national consciousness. And I approve of that. I probably would’ve ranked this higher, but I noticed d-bag A-Rod is using it as his walkout music. And that’s lame.

13. Magic Fountain (Krissy Sell Out’s Dark Crystal Version) - Art Vs Science

This ended up being my top track to run to for the year. A lot of builds and the bizarre Talking Heads-like lyrics stood out.

14. STSisGold - STS

The Phantogram sample is perfect under this track. STS just chugs along on top and uses the breakdowns as the only breather on the whole track.

15. Regenerate (Russ Chimes Remix) - Booka Shade

I love me some Booka Shade and Russ Chimes even more. So I knew I was going to love this track.

16. Need You Now - Cut Copy

Another great full album, but this single still holds up. Another great spring/summer track.

17. A Key Turns - The Depreciation Guild

This album actually reminds me of older M83 stuff. So that’s probably why I like it. Dreamy indie-pop with layers and layers of synths.

18. Calgary - Bon Iver

Ever since Justin Timberlake did his Bon Iver impression on SNL I have a hard time listening to this album. Still really good, but it does… make… me… sleepy…

19. Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins Rework) - Star Slinger

Heaven or Las Vegas… Always love that track, so this is a nice new addition for my ears to enjoy.

20. Stolen Dog - Burial

Burial keeps cranking out the mood. Rainy, foggy nights in London on the reg.

21. Separator - Radiohead

I liked the King of Limbs, but it did kind of blend together. So the name of this track was accurate, as it separated itself from the rest for me.

22. Rotation - Big K.R.I.T.

I love Big K.R.I.T. I listen to his stuff, literally every day. He offers some soul in what is currently a pretty mediocre rap scene. Gripping wood grain and candy paint never sounded as smooth.

23. Cinema (Skrillex Remix) - Benny Benassi featuring Gary Go

Skrillex gets a lot of shit, but I’m on board. And this burned a place in my heart after being on a boat in Lake Mead on a hot July day, watching Paul dance in the most bizarre way. So if Skrillex can prompt more of that, I’m all for it.

24. Streetz Tonight - Araabmuzik

Every track I’ve heard of Araabmuzik I dig. This was the first I heard, and it kind of recalls the stuff Bird Petersen was doing mixing electro with hip hop beats. Araabmuzik has taken it another step and creating his own style.

25. White Noise/Red Meat (Bassjackers Remix) - Dada Life

Who doesn’t love champagne and bananas? This was another great running track. Still need to get out to see Dada Life. I know they’re nuts live.

26. Hawaii (Niva Remix) - Blackbird Blackbird

Smooth and sultry. Lay out by the pool music.

27. Hit Me Where It Hurts - The Booze

First off, great band name. Second, this sound really begs to be seen live. So keep your eye out for The Booze.

28. Can I Live Freestyle - Pusha T

Fear of God is a great mix tape. Pusha just doing his thing, without the commercial bent. Somehow makes it better. Lots of Vegas references, so I’m all about that too.

29. Disque Oh! (Eumig & Chinon Remix) - Beatacue

This track got remixed by a solid lineup. Don Rimini, High Rankin, etc… But the Eumig & Chinon remix stands out the most. Another good running track.

30. The Stranger - Lord Huron

Nice instrumentation, and a sleepy folksy bent, without the sleepiness of Bon Iver. And like I mentioned last year, I’m a sucker for whistling on tracks. So bonus!

31. Bo Jackson - The Carps

I have no clue what this has to do with Bo Jackson. Unless the chorus line of “I’m the best thing you’ve ever hard” refers to Bo Jackson’s invincibility in Tecmo Bowl. Cause then it’s right on.

32. Snake Eater - Joker

If they ever used dub-by electro as a James Bond intro track, then this would be it. Actually Snake Eater would be a great Bond movie title too.

33. Zan With That Lean - Soulja Boy

This track is too silly for me not to include it. It may be the most auto tuned track ever, but somehow it still works.

34. Cameras (Gucci Vump Remix) - Matt & Kim

Matt & Kim never sounded so electro. Great way to chop up the original…

35. Holla If Ya Hear Me (DJ Tritz Mix) - Avicii featuring 2Pac

Now that hologram 2Pac exists maybe we can start seeing him performing alongside Avicii at Marquee. I want a hologram Biggie too though. Maybe they could go on tour together?

36. Beautiful People - Chris Brown featuring Benny Benassi

I’m not a Chris Brown apologist, mainly because I don’t care about the musicians lives outside of them continue to making good music. And bringing Benny Benassi in to produce tracks on his new album was genius. Definitely raising the profile of EDM.

37. Madder Red (Henning Furst Remix) - Yeasayer

This may have technically come out in 2010, but I didn’t hear it till this year. A really cool take on an already great Yeasayer track.

38. Blomman - MyBack

Some down and dirty dubstep to get you going in the morning.

39. Get Down, Make Love - Nine Inch Nails

Another one that got remastered in 2010, but I didn’t pick it up till 2011. Vintage NIN, it’s like a modern day gift from the past.

40. Stay Away - Charles Bradley & The Menahan Street Band

James Brown soul-style version of a classic Nirvana song. It just… works.

41. Honey I’m Home featuring L Fame - Fat Trel

This track was produced by Araabmuzik, and despite the DJ shout outs, it is a perfect piece for Fat Trel to lay down a fun, albeit cliche, drinking song.

42. Tonic - Russ Chimes

Another solid Russ Chimes track. I’ve heard it worked into a few DJ’s sets and it holds it’s own really well.

43. Get Low - Donnis featuring Gorilla Zoe and  Young Dro

Another drinking track, more lean, more E. While the topic is played out, this is still a fun track.

44. Socialite Death Squad - The Idle Hands

A QOTSA flavor, a bit of angst, and some nice chunky guitars.

45. Lay Myself Down - Mazzy Star

So glad to have Mazzy Star back putting tracks out. I must have had 90’s nostalgia this past year… This would’ve gone in the rotation for sure back then.

46. Hey Moon - John Maus

I love me some John Maus. As unique a voice as there is in Indie right now. And laid in on this ethereal track is perfect.

47. Teenage Crime - Adrian Lux

I think this one’s been out for a little while as well. It takes a bit to get rolling, but it’s worth the wait.

48. You Know What I Mean - Cults

Cults sound is refreshing and definitely deserves to make the list.

49. Belispeak - Purity Ring

The little breaks make this indie-electro jam.

50. Kaputt - Destroyer

A great album by Destroyer, again. This song still stands out. Love the saxophone work on it.

51. Sweet 17 - Dirty Beaches

The bands name is a great indicator of what this sounds like.

52. Endless Summer - MagicFades

If the above track conjures night-time, rowdy beach parties. This is more on the mid-afternoon, baked in the sun snoozing vibe.

53. I Don’t Want Love - The Antlers

Great album. This track reminds me of older Band of Horses stuff.

54. Illest Alive (Main Attrakionz) - Clams Casino

Clams Casino was on fire this year. But a track superbly sampling Bjork? I’m obviously on board.

55. Lights On (Gigamesh Remix) - Katy B

The dubstep queen gets a little pop restyling thanks to Gigamesh. Think Robyn or Alphabeat.

56. Hearts - I Break Horses

Dan Deacon and Holy Fuck type builds on this track. With some dreamy female vocals.

57. A Lil More ft Bambu - Otayo Dubb

Some positive hip hop never does anyone wrong.

58. Ghost Town - Kurt Vile

Kurt’s always solid for a good, meandering track that is great for afternoon beer drinking.

59. Touch - HOLY OTHER

Slow grimy dub from Manchester. Deep, low baseline with some manipulated and effected vocals ala Burial.

60. Don’t Move - Phantogram

Nice dreamy pop.

61. Eyes Be Closed (Lovelock Remix) - Washed Out

Washed Out’s flavor has been bitten by a lot of people this year, so maybe this Lovelock remix was perfect. It added just a bit more structure and positive flow.

62. Saturday Love - Toro Y Moi

Great summer jam.

63. Excuse - Big Freedia

If Big Freedia’s sissy bounce is wrong, I don’t want to be right.

64. You’re A Song (That I Can’t Sing) - Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons

Not exactly a breaking new track. But it’s the first time I heard it. And after seeing Jersey Boys (surprisingly good show), this stuck out.

65. Nuclear Seasons - Charli xcx

Nice 80’s vibe on this one.

66. there will be tears - frank ocean

I gotta say, Frank Ocean took a while to grow on me. But the understated production on this (when his counterparts would auto tune the shit out of it) definitely help it stand out.

67. LA Lights (SmarterChild Remix) - KOPPS

Tight little remix.

68. Wrestler - Does It Offend You, Yeah?

Aggressive track from DIOYY. Not sure where the sample is from. Anyone?

69. Then It’s White - The Field

Pencil The Field into my top lists every year.

70. s o  c l o s e  t o  p a r a d i s e  - elite gymnastics

The spaced out title of this track makes me want to hate it, but I can’t help myself.

71. County Line - Cass McCombs

This sounds like it would have had a home in the 70’s, or 80’s, or 90’s. So I guess that’s saying something.

72. Aurora - Fred Falke

Again, just pencil Fred Falke into my top list of the year.

73. Ship Of Fools - Fucked Up

I really wanted to try and like this album as a whole more than I did. But alas, there’s still a lot of really good stuff on there.

74. Wicked Games - The Weeknd

The Weeknd doesn’t have as much humor as R. Kelly does, but he does love to sing about sexin.

75. Romantic Streams - SLEEP OVER

Nice synths on this one.

76. Green Aisles - Real Estate

Another solid album worth checking out.

77. Moonstruck - Action Bronson

This isn’t Ghostface. Seriously? How can this not be Ghostface?

78. 212 - Azealia Banks

If AB wasn’t so foul-mouthed she’d be rising up on a more public level.

79. Forest Green - Mike G

Not all the Odd Future guys can create a hook, but Mike G certainly does on this track.

80. Another Girl - Jacques Green

Another manipulated vocal track. Sense a trend?

81. Lose It - Austra

I know Florence & The Machine blew up even more this year, but you gotta check out the pipes on this chick.

82. Seriously - Shlohmo

Nice,  blippy slow jam. Complete with ambient shower drainage!

83. Swim Club - The Cave Singers

Some nice stuff to round out the overly electronic bent of this list.

84. Stuck On Fuckin’ You - Lady Gaga

(Sadly?) this is the best thing Lady Gaga did all year. A low-fi acoustic recording when she stuck on a tour bus in Minneapolis. Which makes sense, cause there’s a bit of a Prince vibe to it.

Lastly, I always try and throw in one full mix that I’ve been digging on all year. And here it is.

85. Expressway Mix, Pt 3 - Russ Chimes

Solid, indie electro all the way through. Built for what it implies. Hop on the road, let the street lights pass in rhythm.

@The_Glendon’s Top Tracks of Oh-Ten

Yes, this is way overdue, but I’ve only completely changed my life over the last couple months, so sorry. But, without further ado, here are my top tracks of 2010.

The rules I applied to myself were: only one track per artist (unless they happened to appear, be featured in, or remixed by, someone else). Also, these are really my most played tracks of the year and apply only to me. And it only places songs I’ve heard. I can’t listen to everything, natch. (Downloads links at the bottom.)

1. Alphabeat - DJ - If 2010 had any theme for me, it was my utter embracement of female-forward pop music. I’m secure enough in my masculinity and heterosexuality that I don’t need to be concerned how this might come off . I can thank a lot of this to my sister (who flooded our house with the likes of Paula Abdul, Wilson Philips and Janet) and also to @eflippin . It’s good to bond over music, and if your significant other thinks a certain type of music or artists is good, then take the time to really see what they like about it. It might help you discover more about that person than the music. I had been digging on Alphabeat for a while, but this song put me over the edge. I listened to it at work, bobbing my head while my partner @DigitalMoFoTomD thought I was crazy. In my car. While I was running. While I was getting ready to go out, when I got home from going out. Anyway, it got played a lot.

2. Kanye West - MONSTER (feat Rick Ross, Jay Z and Niki Minaj) - I’m a huge Kanye fan, he’s up there as one of my favorite artists of all time. So when he started dropping music for his G.O.O.D. Friday platform I was obviously excited. Then this track came out, and it just absolutely crushed it. Now, I wouldn’t even say it’s Kanye’s best song of his new album. I would say Runaway is probably my favorite. But this got played a ton, and we saw the peak of Niki Minaj. She will never top the verse from this track. And it was my favorite verse of any rapper this year. Showing up Kanye, Rick Ross and Jay Z on one track is impressive. However, I think it’s all downhill for her. She’ll never live up to it. I’m just glad Kanye’s back.

3. Sean Roman - Phone Call - I had never heard of Sean Roman until I downloaded this track from some random music blog. I don’t even remember when or why. But this track just had a stickiness to it that I couldn’t shake. Just the slightest touch of 90’s Chicago house. A couple twisted samples similar to Burial. Just enough bounce to keep it light.

 4. Aspirations - Get Fcked - This took me back to high school. Raging hard core, but throw in some samples and a chick singer to lighten it up. Aspirations manages to take a song about getting fucked over and turned it into an uptempo track that could be a summer anthem. In fact, it was my summer anthem.

5. jj - My Way - I have a big soft spot for jj. They’re music is so versatile. You just want to be in the sun, drinking somewhere and then all of a sudden you realize what the lyrics are. And it’s that contrast that makes jj special. Dreamy, floaty pop (hell they even have birds chirping in the song) and lyrics that are challenging asking “Who the fuck are you?” A random, perfect Lil Wayne cameo makes it that much better. If only Weezy could stick to jj cameo’s I wouldn’t feel like he’s been slipping.

6. Nika and Rory - LA Suxxx - Another summer anthem for me. The autotuned vocals of Zola Jesus over some washed out synths. And in the crunchy bass and it’s a perfect roof-drinking jam.

7. Big Boi - Shutterbug - Thank god for Big Boi. Seems like he’s the only one keeping big name hip hop fresh these days (outside of Kanye, although I really think he’s on another level). I don’t think Big Boi could have done this as Outcast. Andre 3000 just makes everything too cartoony these days. This will make your head bob off. Hard for me not to think of @pe3imagery when I hear this pop off.

8. Grinderman - Heathen Child - Definitely one of my most played. The video is crazy good too. Nick Cave’s guitar just burns up this track and his sneering, growling vocals are unmatched in 2010. Seems like if he was playing this track live he might bring out a condor on stage or bite the head off a gerbil or something. Vicious.

9. Freddie Gibbs - Fuck the World (National Anthem) - Hip hop is in a precarious place right now. Radio tracks go for the lowest common denominator and there are only a few standouts (see the previous Kanye and Big Boi comments). Then along comes Freddie Gibbs. Only from a place like Gary, Indiana could an artist like Gibbs come out. Forgotten, displaced and just flat out hungry. He demands you to listen. Gibbs has a Tupac flow, Biggie content and an attitude that is all Chicago. Great production on this track too. Whistling while yelling “fuck the world.” Like Peter, Bjorn and John meets the South Side.

10. Luke Roberts - Unspotted Clothes - I had never heard of Luke Roberts until I saw the video for this track. And what an incredible video it is. Reminds of me of some early 90’s fun. Love the clean production of this with the drawn out singing style. Roberts isn’t in a hurry to get anywhere in this track. And that’s why I listened through it so many times.

11. Crystal Castles - Not in Love (Featuring Robert Smith) - I like the new Crystal Castles album. I do. But until this came out it just felt like the same thing. Robert Smith hasn’t done anything this fresh in a long time. I just wish they would team up and do a whole album. The perfect collaboration.

12. Gucci Mane - Pills (Prince of Ballard remix) - I’m not surprised, but it seems like every song about E is always good. (See !!!’s cover of “Take Ecstasy With Me” and Paper Route Gangstaz “Rollin”) Gucci is unapologetic in his style and marble-mouth flow. But this remix really steps it up. Adds in that 70’s vibe that matches up well with the track. Shout out to @jmclain for sharing in my Gucci love. Burrrrrrr.

13. R Kelly - Best I Ever Had - As long as R Kelly is releasing music he’ll be on my list. This whole Demo Tape album was incredible. I loved that he just embraced all the young up and comers like Drake, but then proceeded to absolutely crush them on their own tracks. Typical Kells story. Although, I have to believe there’s no way R Kelly can have as much sex for the duration he claims. It just doesn’t seem humanly possible.

14. Mount Kimbie - Before I Move Off - Another solid album. The whole thing bounces, blips and wobbles along. Warbly, pitched vocal samples add the playfulness that’s the perfect work soundtrack.

15. Matthew Dear - You Put a Smell On Me - I think Matthew Dear is really underrated. Even within indie music it doesn’t seem like he gets as much love as he should. This latest album was a gem. I think this track would particularly frighten my mom. Which of course still means a lot in my book even though I’m not 14 anymore.

16. Escort - Cocaine Blues - Major Rolling Stones vibes coming to me off this one. Plus there’s a solid verse about Chicago. How could I not love it? Would have fit as a summer jam back in 1975 just as much as it did in 2010.

17. Baths - Maximalist - Another great electronic album. Similar to Mount Kimbie it was hard to rate one over the other. Again, chopped up floating vocals. Another album that is perfect to toss on while working.

18. Das Racist - hahahaha j/k - Some of the charm of Das Racist is just how effortless it all seems. Great production with a Days of our Lives sample. Self-referential, great rhymes, turning back on themselves. This jam is the best of the best on the mixtape.

19. LCD Soundsystem - I Can Change - I’m super bummed LCD is wrapping things up. I just want a new album every other year. Is that too much to ask? Another great full album, and similar to Das Racist, just effortless. This was my fave off the album.

20. TOBACCO - Fresh Hex (ft Beck) - The chopped up Beck vocals and crunchy synths were blasted off my roof at numerous occasions this past summer.

21. Delorean - Stay Close - Got to see these guys open for Miike Snow at recordBar. I had liked their stuff, but the live show really captured me. Plus seeing @pe3imagery scaring the shit out of a bunch of tiny Spanish dudes was a highlight of the year. Seems like this was always playing as @eflippin and I were driving around Palm Springs at Coachella last spring as well. So that’s a lovely memory too.

22. Zola Jesus - Night - Reminiscent of Q Lazarus. What a great voice. Gotta thank @kckimchi for bolstering my Zola Jesus love.

23. Morgan Page - The Longest Road (Deadmau5 remix) - This was my intro into Morgan Page’s stuff. And that’s all courtesy of @ericcoomes. Plus the chick that sings this is hot. This was on repeat in my headphones at work any day after a long night. A new genre, hangover-house?

24. Major Lazer x La Roux featuring Gucci Mane - I’m Not Your Lemonade + Heroes and Villains Remix - A seemingly unlikely pairing/mash-up/thing just works. Heavy hitting bass on the La Roux section, then shit get’s appropriately messy when Gucci steps in.

25. James Blake - CMYK - This got me excited for the album. Then the album was a bit of a disappointment. But I guess I shouldn’t have expected a Monica and Aaliyah sample on every track.

26. Rosanna - Waterfall (Fear of Tigers remix) - This goes hand in hand with the Alphabeat notes. A poppy little gem that seems like it could easily have been created by Nina in 1984.

27. Noah and the Whale - Blue Skies (The Twelves remix) - Also on the Coachella driving list, and I know it’s a fave of @eflippin. Kind of hard to be in a pissed off mood when this pops up. The Twelves remix adds a little LCD Soundsystem flavor to really up the track.

28. Pictureplane - Beyond Fantasy - I dig everything Pictureplane puts out. He gets some of that washed out vibe, but the beats hit hard enough that I don’t feel like some SoCal hipster listening to it. Now if he could hook up with fellow-Denver product Pretty Lights and come on tour to Vegas I’d be all set.

29. Neon Indian - Sleep Paralysist - Another group that seems to have to nod to LCD Soundsystem. I dig the subtle horns.

30. Sonnymoon - Houstatlantavegas - Chill, sweet, female-vocal cover of Drake’s stripper anthem. Love the unexpectedness of it and it’s sexy as hell.

31. The Raveonettes - Lust (Trentmoeller remix) - I’m not the hugest Raveonettes fan, but the paired down, moody Trentmoeller take is right up my alley. This gets tacked on to the Sonnymoon track as a good start to any #sextasticplaylist.

32. Jonsi - Boy Lilikoi - The Jonsi album was definitely a successful solo effort. Tracks actually came together in a little more cohesive way than most Sigur Ros albums. And the weird, nature-bird-man look he adopted for the tour was great. One of the highlights of the Coachella trip last year. Love the Tiesto remix as well and it was a toss-up which to put on the list

33. The Units - High Pressure Days (Headman Rework) - Definitely a Devo/Talking Heads vibe on the vocal delivery. I could easily see @zachbrockhouse adding this to his karaoke repertoire.

34. Ester Dean - Drop it Low (Remix - ft Lil Wayne and Chris Brown) - Club banger. And it was the first track I remember Chris Brown having after the “incident.” And regardless of what kind of guy he might be, he’s uber-talented and I enjoy his stuff. If you didn’t see him on Saturday Night Live it’s worth the time. Best dancer out there. Although @amwalloch can give him a run for his money.

35. The Big Pink - Tonight (Coyote Clean Up Dirty Dub) - From the band responsible for my #1 track last year. They had a remix EP out and this was a nice stand-out off that. Completely different vibe then the band’s sounds. Totally chill as opposed to an ear-drum bombing wall of sound. Gotta love the versatility.

36. Twin Sister - All Around And Away We Go - I don’t know what the deal is with the singer’s accent. But I think that’s what brings this to the next level of goodness. Good track to end the night with.

37. Bit Funk - A Question For You - Seemed like there were a lot of quality Bit Funk remixes this year. And with the build on this track I would say the question is rhetorical by the time the song wraps up.

38. Andreya Triana - A Town Called Obsolete (Mount Kimbie remix) - Tack this one on to Sonnymoon and the Trentmoeller remix for the #sextasticplaylist.

39. Clare Maquire - Ain’t Nobody (Breakage Remix) - Similar to that Zola Jesus track but toss in a little grimy dubstep bass. Where’s Fiona Apple been and can she hurry up and make some magic like this?

40. DiscoTech - The Velvet Underground - Rock & Roll - I could easily drink a six-pack out of the back of a Camaro to this.

41. The ACBs - Be Professional - KC’s own. I regret not getting into the scene as much as I would have liked. But every once in a while I’d stumble on some tracks. This is just a kick-ass track with a nice low-fi production vibe.

42. Robyn - Hang With Me - Not sure if the Laidback Luke remix of Indestructable came out in 2010, but it was a tough call between that one and this original. Another album that was solid all the way through. This started getting a little overplayed for me thanks to the repetitive nature of Vegas radio, but it’s still a nice little pop gem.

43. Rich Boy (ft 607) - Drop (Remix) - Was not expecting this production from Rich Boy, so it definitely made me revisit the former Cash Money soldier.

44. Christopher Wade - Falling In - Initially Wade’s vocals caught me off guard and I wasn’t sure what to think. I think they were just so passive, but the uniqueness really grew on me.

45. BBU - CHI Don’t Dance - Chi’s version of Das Racist? But maybe a little less ironic, and more party. And the Chi references always get me anyway. And it’s an appropriately used Goody Mobb reference.

46. The National - Anyone’s Ghost - Not sure what it was about this album that didn’t grab me as much as previous efforts. But this is vintage stuff and that is certainly a good thing.

47. Stromae - Alors on Danse (Remix feat. Kanye West) - This just seemed like a really odd pairing to Kanye, but it just works.

48. Arcade Fire - We Used to Wait - So this is a good album of course. But similar to The National’s album. It just didn’t fully engrain itself to me. But this track stuck out the most.

49. Maximum Balloon - Groove Me feat. Theophilus London - Former TV on the Radio-er’s solo effort is a great new addition. And this is definitely my favorite thing Theophilus London’s done. This is the kind of thing Kid Cudi should be doing if he’d get over himself and stop trying to recapture the Crookers remix love.

50. Girl Unit - Wut - Similar to Pictureplane’s vibe. Wut wut wut.

51. TItus Andronicus - A More Perfect Union - Heavy heavy Springsteen influence so of course I love these guys. Hell, they even reference Born To Run in the track. I could do without the speech sample, but this thing has a raw energy that is hard to ignore. I definitely want to catch these guys live. Then we’d really see how they match up to Springsteen.

52. A-Trak x Gucci Mane x Lil Wayne - We Don’t Want No Goblins - The standout track from A-Trak’s Dirty South Dance 2, and another solid addition from Gucci and Wayne. I know everyone’s crazy about the Wayne/Eminem collaboration, but you can keep it. I want some more stuff like this.

53. Gayngs - The Gaudy Side of Town - The indie supergroup lived up to the billing. And you can’t go wrong with the smooth sax.

54. The Wheat Pool - Right Arm - Not sure where I heard about this, but it’s been consistently played all year despite my limited attention to alt-country. If I could only get the catchy gems like this I’ld have to start keeping an ear out more.

55. Pharrell Williams & Uffie - Add Suv (Armand Van Helden remix) - Pharrell’s latest stuff with N.E.R.D. has not been that interesting. But this bouncy party jam is a winner.

56. Rusko - Hold On (feat. Amber Coffman) - I can’t take too much of the womp womp dubstep, but this has just enough of a pop polish to keep it repeatedly enjoyable. Shout out to @jimmykeown for all his dubstep love.

57. Sufjan Stevens - I Walked - I dig the electronic touches on Sufjan’s latest album. I don’t think anything will ever top Illinoise for me, but the guy certainly knows what he’s doing.

58. Daft Punk - Derezzed - This was really the only thing off the Tron soundtrack that could come off as a single. I know everyone was expecting the next great Daft Punk album, and so was I, but looking back, the soundtrack should have just been expected for what it was. Still dig this track, but in the legacy of Daft Punk it’s probably not going to be in the top 25.

59. Gucci Mane - Dope Boys (Bird Peterson Remix) - Loved Bird Peterson’s mixtape Drankenstein. This is the stand out track from that. And it just firms it up that pretty much any Gucci remix is going to get lots of play by me.

60. Massive Attack (feat Hope Sandoval) - Paradise Circus (Gui Boratto Remix) - I have a huge crush on Hope Sandoval’s vocals here. And the minimal Gui Boratto style is perfect for a remix.

61. Sensual Harrassment - Fever - Yeah, it’s another chillwave track, but it picks up the pace a little and has some nice 80’s keyboards roaming around. Plus points for an awesome band name.

62. Perfume Genius - Mr. Peterson - This song is haunting and creepy. Reminds me of early Sufjan Stevens. I dig.

63. Mark McGuire - Brain Storm (for Erin) - I loathe the steroid-pumping, drooling Cardinal-fan-fave baseball player Mark McGuire. On the other hand, I really dig this. Chill, but builds up nicely. Holy Fuck-ish.

64. The Hundred In The Hands - Gigantic Tom Tom - How has this not been in a commercial? Has it been in a commercial? Sounds like something that would be in a Pert Plus or Kindle ad. And Kindle, if you can use the same music as Pert Plus then you fail as a brand. Regardless, I like this track. Until I see it in a commercial.

65. Free Energy - Bang Pop - This has that old-school indie sensibility to it that I love. Like Matthew Sweet reincarnated. Plus the video is awesome.

66. Royksopp - Silver Cruiser - Another gem from Royksopp that’s perfect to work to.

67. Skrillex - Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites - Another great work track, but in a different i-must-get-shit-done way. Winner for lamest track name. Seriously, the track name almost makes me not like this song.

68. Crookers - Tee-Pee Theme (featuring Drop the Lime) - One of my fave tracks off last year’s Crookers album. Super short coming in at 1:40, but any longer and it probably wouldn’t work.

69. Boys Noize - Yeah - I really wanted to put the Boys Noize track “1010” on the list, but “Yeah” kept winning for me. Oh well, I’ll just have “1010” be the @1010_Collective theme song.

70. Brandon Flowers - Welcome To Fabulous Las Vegas - I have the list close out just like I had my personal life close out 2010. KC was fun and I am going to/currently miss all my friends. But the bright lights (and @eflippin) couldn’t have me away any longer. As for the song, I guess it’s the meaning of it that I like. I don’t really like the track compared to some of the others off Brandon Flower’s solo album. But the album was promising and I’ll take any new Killers-related stuff that comes out.

The Cell

Cohabitation Collection – The Cell

Details: Stache owned. Both had seen.

Stache’s Take & Rating:

The first time I saw The Cell I was thinking “Damn, it’s like a full length movie of REM’s ‘Losing My Religion’ video.” And then I learned that Tarsem Singh was the director of them both, so… that makes a hell of a lot of sense now doesn’t it. This was a cinematic breath of fresh air when it came out. There were a lot of ‘psychological thrillers’ that had come out back in the mid-to-late nineties. Most seemingly always featuring some combination of Ashley Judd or Richard Gere. But what The Cell brought in was a sense of visual panache. A look unlike any of the other flicks out.

The story is great, the visuals are incredible, Vince Vaughn is great, Vincent D’Onofrio is even better, and Jennifer Lopez is actually tolerable. And what really surprised me about The Cell this time around was how well the visuals played out. There were a couple CGI effects that looked pretty rudimentary compared to todays standards, but there was enough in-camera tricks and set-design that held it together. The horse-slicing scene still blows me away every time.

Stache’s Take: Dave Wanndstedt Stache***

Stiletto’s Take & Rating:

The Cell is awesome. There, I’ve said it. Great 90′s movie. I was completely taken by the imagery in the movie all over again and I’ve seen it several times.

While Jennifer Lopez is a little hokey overall as an actress, I still have typically enjoyed most movies she is in. This is by far the best.

Vince…. oh, young Vince Vaughn. Let me count the ways. Need I say more?

I had a great time watching The Cell this time around while reading the back story of the various scenes, the art pieces portrayed, inspiration etc. The Cell definitely is interesting on the eyes if nothing else. Seems like each time I’ve watched this movie, I’ve noticed something different.

Can’t wait to watch The Cell again… in like 5 years.

Our Cohabitation Collection quickly began to stack up on us, so we decided to do a “C-Movie Quick Fire” post.  The movies, all Comedies, were Cabin Boy, Cable Guy, and Caddyshack. Like to hear  it? Here it go!

Cabin Boy

Stache’s Take & Rating:

You either love Chris Elliott, or you can’t stand him. I’m grateful that I get him, and he infinitely amuses me. Late Night with David Letterman helped establish his comedic voice, but it was really Get A Life, the sadly short-lived sit-com in the early-90′s, that created the full persona of Chris Elliott. His character is typically ignorant, naive, but ultimately lovable. And that is who his character Nathanial Mayweather is in Cabin Boy. This fancy lad endears himself not only to the scurvy crew of the “Filthy Whore” but to us as well.

Completely ridiculous plot? Hilariously bad sets? All true. But we get some awesome characters from James Gammon, Brian Doyle-Murphy and Andy Richter. Solid cameos from Ricki Lake and David Letterman round out this campy gem.

Anyway, I tend to think those who appreciate Chris Elliott have a higher comedic IQ.

Stiletto’s Take & Rating:

Chris Elliott movies are terrible. Not funny, stupid cheesy, no excuse for making them ever, terrible. *

Cable Guy

Stiletto’s Take & Rating:

Cable Guy is classic college flick, hilarious, quote-worthy movie. Love every minute of it. Gets funnier every time I watch it. *****

Stache’s Take & Rating:

I have to be honest. The novelty of Jim Carrey has definitely worn thin for me over the years. Ace Ventura and Dumb & Dumber are both classics. But a lot of the following films just started feeling repetitive. And the more dramatic bent pieces usually felt self-indulgent to me, outside of Truman Show (still mildly self-indulgent) and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (solid flick). So when Cable Guy popped up I wasn’t exactly thrilled about having to sit through it.

However, this actually held up pretty well. I was pleasantly surprised to really enjoy it. And while we still get some of the now-cliche Jim Carrey elements, we got him being the foil instead of the reluctant (or incompetent) hero. And Matthew Broderick plays the straight man like no other can, so it’s a good duo. I still think I’d have enjoyed it even more if I was a high school junior, half-drunk off Icehouse. At least if I remember correctly from the first time I saw it….

Caddyshack

Stiletto’s Take & Rating:

I’m certain this movie used to be funny, I just know it. But it just wasn’t. Sorry Bill Murray. *

Stache’s Take & Rating:

Chevy Chase. Bill Murray. Rodney Dangerfield. All in their prime.
That’s pretty much all I need to say. *****

Cohabitation Collection – Brokedown Palace

Details: Stiletto owned. Stache had not seen.

Stache’s Review:

This movie starts off with a cassette (!!!) recording from Clair Danes in prison. She says “You’re probably already fast forwarding this.” And she’s right. I should have been. This movie has a few things against it. Claire Danes. A chunky Kate Beckinsale. And a whole lot more of Claire Danes.

I don’t know what it is about Claire Danes. She just seems boring. She seems like a chick that would be hanging out in the middle of your math class in high school. You kinda remember her name. You know she gets decent grades, but she’s not really into much else. Maybe she’s on the yearbook staff?  Anyway, boring Claire Danes plays the ‘wild one’ in this flick, so obviously it’s really hard to believe. Then the crazy, selfish wild one takes it for the team and opts in to Thai prison. Even harder to believe.

Even the soundtrack, which I’m sure was taking the bent of being 90′s uber-hip, is boring. Nelly Furtado, Tricky & DJ Muggs, PJ Harvey… not a single memorable track. They all just blended into mild world-music with a tinge of lesbian.

Anyway, for a thai-prison, drug smuggling, chick trip flick, this pretty much blows.

Rating: Hitler Stache*

Stiletto’s Review:

I love this movie. I love the soundtrack. I love the dynamic between Kate Beckinsale and Claire Danes. It might be a true story or something, so I like it more because of that. If it’s not, don’t ruin it for me.  True, it’s definitely got a flavor of 1990′s. But it’s also an interesting storyline with coming of age, lust, lies, drugs, and friendship truths.  Plus you get to see behind the scenes of a Thai prison.

By the way, I’m absolutely certain that Kate Beckinsale never looked back at Claire Danes once she got out.

Rating: Really sassy, Tom’s (non-existent) heels ****

Cohabitation Collection – The Big Lebowski

Details: Stache owned. Both had seen.

Stache’s Review:

One of the classic comedies of all time. I feel I can honestly say that. In college this was probably watched once a week. And, like any good college movie, this was quoted ad nauseum. So I will review this film through quotes.

THE STRANGER: But sometimes there’s a man, sometimes, there’s a man. Aw. I lost my train of thought here. But… aw, hell.

Sam Elliott’s intro helps set the stage, not just introducing the setting (LA) and the hero (The Dude), but also the narrative style comprised of random asides and meandering thoughts. There are very few dialogues in this film that have one character speaking to another, where both are clear on the conversation. Everyone is either lying or they are confused. Sometimes both. And that makes sense, as this movie is a classic “who done it.” But unlike most where all the characters have their stories straight and are on top of their shit, The Big Lebowski features a cast of characters that are the complete opposite.

THE DUDE: Let me explain something to you. Um, I am not “Mr. Lebowski”. You’re Mr. Lebowski. I’m the Dude. So that’s what you call me. You know, that or, uh, His Dudeness, or uh, Duder, or El Duderino if you’re not into the whole brevity thing.

This quote highlights my favorite thing about The Dude. Throughout all of the conflicts of the film, he remains true to himself and his concerns. It’s all bowling, white russians and his carpet. There is no cathartic moment. He will continue being The Dude.

WALTER SOBCHACK: What the fuck are you talking about? The chinaman is not the issue here, Dude. I’m talking about drawing a line in the sand, Dude. Across this line, you DO NOT… Also, Dude, chinaman is not the preferred nomenclature. Asian-American, please.

John Goodman is fantastic in this flick. And I pulled this quote because it illustrates his character to a T. Walter is a man who lives by rules. They just happen to be his own and could be seen as skewed. He’s more than fine carrying a concealed machine gun, but reacts harshly (to say the least) when another bowler steps over the line (literally, a line).

There are so many other good characters, and quotes, I could go on. For comedies, this is the Coen Brothers masterpiece. And they do what they do best. Write remarkable dialogue and direct a complete cast. There isn’t a single character that isn’t developed to the extent their role requires.

And with that, go watch this again, soon. I leave you with this. Another quote that wraps up the whole film.

WALTER SOBCHAK: Well, there isn’t a literal connection, Dude.
THE DUDE: Walter, face it, there isn’t any connection.

Stache’s Take: Sam Elliott Stache (appropriate) *****

Stiletto’s Review:
It had been quite some time since I watched The Big Lebowski. Every time I see this movie, I forget how funny it is.  Jeff Bridges is great as The Dude. I love John Goodman, probably my favorite character in this movie.
The story line revolves around a case of mistaken identity. Easy enough. But with lots of twists, turns, bowling, and bath robes.
The cult following surrounding this movie is incredible. It has to be stoners mainly. I’ve been dying to go to the Lebowski Fest for a long time. It even came to Las Vegas and I missed it. No matter, I would have felt extremely under-schooled on the subject.
Anywho, if you haven’t seen The Big Lebowski check it out. If you have, dust it off for an awesome movie night and mentally relive college.

Stiletto’s Take: Bowling Shoes with Heels (those are probably really awful looking, dude) *****

Cohabitation Collection – Boogie Nights

Details: Stiletto owned, both had seen

Stiletto’s Review:

I  heart this movie so much. From the first time I saw it, to now, it almost gets better each time.

Boogie Nights shows the rise and fall of the adult movie industry through Mark Wahlberg’s career and his colorful colleagues. And they are some great colleagues too…. Heather Graham, Julianne Moore, Burt Reynolds, John C. Reilly, William H. Macy…. just to scratch the surface.  The cast’s interactions together are gold. Too young, too rich, too stupid, too dependent, too well-endowed….

Also to note, an amazing soundtrack. And extremely well-timed soundtrack.  This one and Almost Famous? Great stuff.

If you haven’t seen this movie, watch it. If you have seen this movie, watch it again.

Stiletto Rating: ***** 5-inch heels… maybe even roller skates??

Stache’s Review:

The right cast. The right director. I think this combination could’ve succeeded with really any script or setting. It just so happens this is about the LA valley porn scene in the 70′s.

A huge cast comes in and out of this story, and Paul Thomas Anderson directs them magnificently. Size does not matter for the roles in Boogie Nights. Everyone has a backstory, and that adds loads of richness to the film.

Basketball Diaries and Fear had already established Marky Mark as a legitimate actor, but Boogie Nights displayed his immense talent. He manages to both embody the epitome of sex depicted in the film, but also completely demystifies it. This isn’t a movie about sex, but rather about the people’s lives outside of that job they fill.

John C. Reilly, Don Cheadle, Heather Graham, William H. Macy, Julianne Moore, Luis Guzman, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Thomas Jane… that’s quite the gang that gets in on the action. But nobody stands apart more than Burt Ryenolds, the porn patriarch. No moment stands out more than when he’s in the back of the limo ‘MC-ing’ some video action with Rollergirl and a random off the street. As things go wrong we see his character, Jack Horner, realizing on camera how the entire industry is heading south.

And ultimately that’s what this film is about. The rise and fall of the characters and the industry. The highs extremely high. The lows, cringe-worthy. The film holds up, and has actually aged better. We know some of these actors even more now than we did then. And they still shine like a star. A star. A star. A big, bright shining star.

Cohabitation Collection – Blazing Saddles

Details: Stache owned. Both had seen.

Stiletto’s Review:

I had seen this movie a couple times, can’t even remember when… high school maybe.  This over-the-top, inappropriate 1974 Western spoof is pretty timeless.

The premise of the movie is a black man is chosen as a ploy to be a sheriff and ruin a Western town. The characters are great… Bart the Sheriff is hilarious. He plays the part perfectly. Gene Wilder is a totally believable town drunk and crazy friend to Bart.

Watching this movie really reminds you how crazy and narrow-minded racism is.  The townspeople are depicted completely shallow and asinine really driving home the ignorance message.

If you’re looking for a classic (and a little crass) comedy, Blazing Saddles is it!

Stiletto’s Take: Old Gringo cowboy boots ****

Stache’s Review:

I don’t have a top 5 movies of all time, that’s just too crazy difficult to compile. But, I do have a top 5 Western movies of all time. And this is firmly in that list. I also have a top 5 Comedies of all time. And this lands in there as well.

So needless to say, I love this movie.

As far as I’m concerned, this is Mel Brook’s finest film. He just nails every aspect. The casting is spot on. Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, Slim Pickens, Harvey Korman…. The dialogue is right on. And all the turns are perfect. (The direct lines to camera, breaking the third wall at the end of the movie.)

There are so many funny lines, that every time I watch it’s almost as if I’m surprised it’s that funny. I shouldn’t have been surprised that Stiletto laughed just as much as I did, but it was cute to see her enjoy the movie all over again.

The only bad, or sad, thing about this movie is that Cleavon Little never followed up what he did in this movie. A handful of B-movies and TV show appearances and that’s it. This is a topic I need to do more research into. What prevented him from attaining even higher stardom?

If I have any suggestion for you, movie-wise at least, it’s watch this again soon.

Cohabitation Collection – Blair Witch Project

Details: Stache owned. Both had seen.

Stiletto’s Review:

I saw this movie in the movie theater in 1999. It was pretty awful then. It’s still holds up as awful now.  The acting is terrible… and I read that some of the scared reactions were real from the cast, which means they are just generally over-amplified, drama queens.

I really like the idea of this horror movie. Film students try to track down info on an urban legend, get lost, and then become part of the myth. Low budget, shot in 8 days. But the characters come off as lame, emo kids and the storyline comes off hokey.  I mean, the film students wake up scared to death of some rock piles and sticks….

Lame in 1999. Lame in 2012.

Stiletto’s Take: Sad, emo combat boots *

Stache’s Review:

Despite it’s flaws, this movie was still a breakthrough at the time. Low-budget horror flick that cashes in huge? That’s just a standard now, but back then it wasn’t. Especially breaking traditional horror flick cliches. This was raw, both from necessity (budget), and purposefully (adding realism to a genre that was getting cartoon-y).

Reviewing it now doesn’t allow for those attributes to be fresh. What Blair Witch did, has since been repeated over and over. But, back in 1999, this was fresh. And that’s why, again despite it’s flaws, it remains an important part of American cinema.

So that justifies why this film may not seem to hold up to today’s standards. But I can’t justify the mediocre acting. It was pretty painful to watch again.

I do appreciate the techniques and tricks the filmmakers used to get the reactions they wanted. Do yourself a favor and check out the trivia on IMDB. Stiletto was reading through as we were watching and it added another dimension to the film. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0185937/trivia

So yeah…. this one doesn’t age well. But I’ll give it a little bump for being a trailblazer.

Cohabitation Collection – Black Hawk Down

Details: Stiletto owned. Both had seen.

Stache’s Review:

For the most part I like war movies. I guess it’s the macho thing to do. But typically, they provide a unique perspective. Some are pro-war, some anti. To me it’s a glimpse into a world (hopefully) I’ll never have to see. But that glimpse, no matter how realistic, is always presented with an entertainment bent to it. That is, after all, why we go to the movies.

I had only seen Black Hawk Down once, in the theater. And while well done, I never thought to revisit it. And after re-watching it, I remember. This is an incredibly brutal two hours. Unlike other war movies that have a definitive plot (Saving Private Ryan, Apocalypse Now, The Dirty Dozen), this has none. It is just a portrayal of an event. But, if anything, the perspective this takes is cold brutality. Which, I’m guessing is a more accurate depiction of war than most movies get to (or news channels for that matter).

Throughout the viewing I thought to myself a number of times, why am I watching this? What am I gaining from this? And the only thing I could come up with was that it was the least I could do compared to the people who actually lived it. To try and take something away, empathy I suppose, for the guys that are out there doing this. And that is completely unrelated to whether I believe in any particular war or not. Or whether the soldiers do or not.

Ridley Scott’s unrelenting push on the momentum of this movie was it’s defining characteristic. It never stopped to give the audience a break, much like the soldiers on the ground. And he could’ve easily been more heavy handed about his perspective on war, but was able to toe the line of benevolence. He left the pacing itself dictate to the audience how they should feel.

So, is this a good movie? Yes. Is it one I’ll watch again? Probably not. I’m not sure the unsettling nature is something I’ll cozy up on the couch for.

Stache’s Take: Dave Wanndstedt Stache***

Stiletto’s Review:

Ugh. I hate war movies. They make me angry at the world, politics, religion and everything else in between.  But now that we have that out of the way….

Black Hawk Down takes such a raw and gritty approach to the subject matter. It’s truly disheartening and uncomfortable to watch, which Stache had to remind me over and over again that was the point of the entire movie.

Overall: The acting was amazing.  The make-up and sets were amazing. The real-life story was amazing. I just hope I never have to watch it again. Anyone want it??

Cohabitation Collection – Being John Malkovich

Details: Stiletto owned. Both had seen.

We’re back on the wagon after a brief hiatus. And we’re doing something a little different with this review.
Briefly, this movie revolves around a small group of seriously flawed characters (John Cusack, Cameron Diaz and Catherine Keener) that discover a portal into the mind of John Malkovich’s head. Eventually they learn to control him and it gives each of them the power to pursue directions their own lives could not. It’s beautifully dark and demented.
So we watched this movie with a couple friends, and during the course of the movie we found ourselves discussing celebrities we would want to find a portal to. So instead of the normal review, this is each of our explanations of our picks. Including guest bloggers El Hefe and Snowflake!!

Stache’s Take:

Initially I was thinking Tom Brady. All American. Sports hero. Smokin’ hot model wife. Super rich. Not bad right? But then I thought about having to take hits from 250 lb defensive lineman. That’s gotta take it’s toll.
Then I was thinking David Beckham. Incredibly famous and loaded. Superstar athlete. Smokin’ hot wife. But would I want to be hounded by that much media attention? I think I’ll pass.
Brad Pitt? Crazy wife and 13 kids? I’m not even going that route.
So I’m going with Daniel Craig. He’s on a string of great movies. He’s maintained a fairly low profile. Plus he’s James F’ing Bonds! That will never not be cool. Plus if I’m going to be someone else, I at least want an accent.

Stache’s Rating: **** Ditka Stache.

Stiletto’s Take:

I would definitely takeover Britney Spear’s portal… not Britney now, but Britney circa 2000-2003.  She was in the height of her career, rolling in an early success, pushing the envelope, redefining pop music, kicking ass on the dance floor, and sought after by every man/woman/media.  If I was in Britney 2000-2003′s portal, I would live the high life! I’d go to insane parties, stare at my incredible body in the mirror for hours, soak up the public limelight, date every guy in Hollywood, travel around the world 3x, buy a ton of houses and property in my friend Stiletto’s name, and jump portal just shy of marrying a backup dancer!  Britney 2000-2003′s portal empties out in Las Vegas, by the way… very convenient.  If you’re thinking that Britney 2000-2003′s Portal wouldn’t be awesome, you’re just lying.

Stiletto’s Rating: 4-inch Stiletto’s ****

El Jefe’s Take:

Who would I be? This is both the hardest and easiest question to answer. It’s easy because there are so many people you could choose with almost no effort at all. George Clooney comes to mind. Or David Beckham. Maybe Jon Hamm. In fact, Beckham was my first instinct. And while that would indeed be awesome, I feel the need to work harder than that. So I’ve been wracking my brain trying to figure out who I would be that would make me appear thoughtful and at the same time, cast me as one of the most amazingly creative and hilarious guest bloggers for Stache and Stiletto since well, anyone. And that’s why I’ve chosen Russell Brand. Think about it. He’s English, something I’ve always wanted to be; he’s funny, something I’ve also always wanted to be. Plus, he’s a recovering sex addict, who finds himself suddenly single and filthy rich, in London of all places. Count me in!

El Jefe’s Rating: Meximelt, hold the pico ****

Snowflake’s Take:

Easy question.  I would like to be someone who is excellent at something I like doing.  Snowboarding, I like doing that, so Tara Dakides would be fun; silver medal in slopestyle, gold medal in big air and I have always wondered what ‘big air’ would be like since my air is very small. Plus she got to date Dave Grohl for a bit which wouldn’t be bad.  Jools Holland or Jeff Goldblum would be fun, both are great pianists and I wonder how fun it would be to play anything at a piano, without a music sheet, whenever I feel like it.  Going to a piano bar would be a lot more fun.  And I reckon being Sofia Vergara for a bit would be a blast, but thats pretty shallow of me.

Netflix Pick – The Fighter

Details: Stache’s Netflix account, neither had seen.

Stache’s Take:

Great flick. I’m a sucker for boxing movies to begin with, and even though I’m not a close follower of the sport I still keep up with the big fights. The Micky Ward/Arturo Gotti series were some of those fights. The beating both guys took was impressive, and so was the way they could each come back. Ultimately that is the crux of this movie. Marky Mark (sans Funky Bunch) plays “Irish” Micky Ward and throughout the entire movie he just has to take shit. Take shit from his crazy mom and sisters (possibly the most haggard bunch of sisters ever shown on screen). Takes shit from his crackhead brother. Takes shit from every fighter he faces. And finally, he triumphs. Over all of it. Despite it.

So this is the real Rocky story. There are just a couple minor differences. The Adrian character is actually hot – Amy Adams over Talia Shire. There’s no comparison, even when Amy Adams is playing a frumpy Massachusetts barmaid. And the Mickey and Paulie characters are rolled into one awesome character: Dicky, played by Christian Bale. This is one of my favorite roles he’s played. Unlike the Batman/Terminator mold, he’s a broken man. Similar to The Mechanic.

Now, this isn’t Rocky. It takes a long time to become iconic. And Sly in Rocky is about as iconic as it gets. That said, this movie is fascinating and expertly acted. Definitely a must see.

Stache’s Rating: Old-Timey Boxing Stache****

Stiletto’s Take:

I really liked this movie. I really enjoyed Marky Mark without his shirt on. And I really like Christian Bale as an actor.

This movie is about two brothers who are boxers. One is a fallen local legend and the other is an up-and-coming fighter. For a sad movie highlighting the rise and fall of the boxing brothers and their family, there was a surprising amount of funny parts scattered throughout the movie.  The crackhead brother (Bale) is pretty hilarious. The weird dynamic of their family is continuously awkward and humorous. The dialogue and interactions is enough to keep your interest, even outside the biographical story.

A true story, with humor, family dysfunction, and drug addiction… that’s a recipe for a great movie in my eyes!

Stiletto’s Rating: **** Awesome 80′s pumps

The It Gets Better project is something we here at 1010 Collective feel very strongly about. So when Barkley called to team up on the latest 24 Hour Fitness project promoting their team members It Gets Better stories, we couldn’t have been more excited.

When tasked with the project we were determined to let the team members voices and stories shine. We couldn’t have asked for a better group of people. The 24 Hour Fitness team members were open, candid, thoughtful and gracious. All realizing the importance of the project and their words. To allow for an even more comfortable atmosphere to share their stories, we produced, shot, edited and finished this project with just a two person crew.

If you’re not familiar, this is an extremely important effort. “The It Gets Better Project was created to show young LGBT people the levels of happiness, potential, and positivity their lives will reach – if they can just get through their teen years. The It Gets Better Project wants to remind teenagers in the LGBT community that they are not alone — and it WILL get better.”

Thanks again to all the 24 Hour Fitness team members involved and all the internal people at 24 Hour Fitness that pushed this project forward.

Jet Tila is a chef on the rise, not just in Vegas, but the entire culinary world. You may have seen him on Anthony Bourdain’s “No Reservations”, at Wazuzu, the restaurant he helms at the Wynn, or one of the many pop-ups or appearances he makes around the country. If you haven’t heard of him yet, you will.

1010 Collective was first introduced to Jet via our mutual friend Brock Radke. The first thing we noticed is that Jet is a busy busy man. Being in the content game we admired his efforts. Between tweeting, blogging, a frozen food line, consulting, video production and, of course, cooking, Jet is all over the place. Despite that, and his high profile gig at the Wynn, Jet is an everyman’s dude. Over pizza and beers inspiration hit and we decided to create some content around the content king.

With our friends from Tight Salad we ran around Vegas during the weekend of Vegas Uncork’d and hit up some of our favorite spots: Insert Coins, Monta, Fukuburger and Wazuzu.

The result is the above piece. We hope you enjoy it and definitely keep your eye out for Jet. Big things to come…

Food/Wine/Fun Meets Digital/Advertising/Content

We love to eat. And we love to drink. And there’s no better place to do that than in Vegas. Which is why we’re proud to be a partner of Vegas Uncork’d.

Vegas Uncork’d is a world-renown food and wine festival, presented by Bon Appetit. This year’s edition of the annual event gathered together the greatest chefs in the world for several days of food, wine and fun for foodies looking for the ultimate culinary experiences. Guests could party it up with French culinary genius Hubert Keller as he DJ’d his own party. Or get served some of the whole suckling pig Charlie Palmerwas dishing up personally. And even play blackjack against top chefs like this year’s winner Jet Tila.

1010 Collective was brought in by Uncork’d to manage and update its website, customize its social media channels, create and distribute e-mail marketing, purchase and place online ads, as well as shoot video of the festival’s dynamic events. We enjoyed being part of Uncork’d where our integrated approach brought the festival’s Food/Wine/Fun mix to life to drive event awareness, sell tickets and optimize sponsorships.

Baseball: New Season, New Media

Thoughts from Rob Santwer:
Baseball just started and just like last year it’s already over. Did Yogi Berra say that? No. I did. I like the Red Sox and just like the end of last year, when the team lost games, hope, pride and anything else worthwhile, this year’s team is doing the exact same crap the bed routine right out the gate. I know – it’s early – but starting 2-9 after an off season where we pillaged Tampa and San Diego’s rosters of premium talent like Capital One-style Visigoths attacking Vegas with no limit credit cards? Not good, but hope still lives on with 162 game season offering plenty of chances at redemption (and with .500 finally in sight tonight at Baltimore).

Not all starts have been slow this season. MLB raced out of the box this year, teaming up with Apple so that games can be enjoyed on MLB.tv via Apple TV. Despite being seen as old, plodding and a sport for your nap addled grandpa, MLB is on the absolute cutting edge of new media. Everything they do with technology is spun gold. So even if the BoSox finish 30 games out of first, I’ll have plenty of opportunities to watch other teams and their exciting players (while at work, too, thanks to MLB.tv and day games. God Bless America!). See, that’s the kind of perspective you gain after winning two rings in the past few years (after an 86-year drought).

Now I’ll pass the baton off to two Cubs fans who don’t enjoy such perspective on not winning (sorry, low blow), but have plenty of great perspectives on other things MLB/new media, and limitless hope for soon winning historical drought busting rings of their own…

Thoughts from Justin Woolard:

The Cubs are my team. Sometimes I feel like I live and die with every win and loss. I didn’t grow up in Chicago. In fact, I was a Cubs fan for nearly twenty years before I ever stepped foot in the Windy City. No, I’m a product of basic cable – WGN broadcasts on basic cable to be exact. Watching day games from the comfort of my living room, far away in sunny Las Vegas, cheering for the likes of Ryne Sandberg, Andre Dawson and Mark Grace. Looking back, it makes perfect sense that I would be enamored with the many ways one can watch a game from afar.

I’ve been a baseball lover for as long as I can remember. Well, that’s not exactly true. Initially, I just liked baseball. It wasn’t until high school that I fell in love with it. And it wasn’t long after that when I fell in love with technology. Now, some 20 years later, the two have converged in the most magical (and convenient) of ways.

This is actually the third year that the At Bat application has been available and each year it has improved video quality and added features, but this year is particularly impressive. The changes are simple but they have profoundly change the experience.

First off, the picture quality is amazing. It puts my cable company’s Extra Innings package to shame. And it costs fifteen bucks – that’s something like $150 less than its cable counterpart (don’t get me started on the fact that I’ve paid for both). As an added bonus, I can tap a button and expose all of the day’s scores across the top of my screen as I watch. Very cool.

Then there’s the new team customization feature. The first thing I see when I start the app is the breakdown of the current Cubs game along with their schedule, roster, latest news, video highlights and more. Pretty cool stuff, indeed. I also love the fact that I can listen to the Cubs radio play by play for any game.

Major League Baseball certainly knows what they’re doing in the digital space. They’ve created an engagement tool that allows the fan to interact with the product on their own terms. And the additional revenue stream they’ve created is nothing to laugh at. In April of 2009, the app had already generated $1 million in revenue. And while I haven’t seen the numbers for 2010, Wealth Wire lists MLB in its list of the top 25 digital media companies with overall 2010 digital revenue of $450 million. At Bat itself ranks in the top five for paid apps across its four available platforms and in 2010, At Bat for iPhone was Apple’s highest grossing application. Take that, NFL.

Thoughts from Glen Scott:

So I’m a Cubs fan. I’m fine with being an optimist. What’s wrong with that? Always looking at the positive side of things? In this case baseball. The positives being daily games, warm summer days, cold beers, an entire legion of fans pinning their hopes on a perennial loser. I’m ok with that. Because whenever the Cubs do win (and they will, in my lifetime, I have no doubt) it will be all that much sweeter. And I think it’s funny how other fans criticize the Cubs fans for the optimistic approach. You want to win a title. I get it. So do we. But what we do better than anyone else is enjoy the ride. Only one team will win. Why not appreciate, for face value, what your team is providing throughout the year.

In the Cubs case, it’s the best pure baseball atmosphere in the game. Some would argue, *Rob-cough, that Fenway is where it’s at. But for my money nowhere can top Wrigley. Sure the amenities aren’t there. But if you’re looking for amenities then we shouldn’t be having this discussion anyway. Cold beer, peanuts, scorecards, vintage atmosphere and urinal-troughs are the only thing that you should be concerned about. And sure it’s a little pricey. So you spent a bunch of money, had an incredible time and your team still lost… suck it up. Enjoy the ride. (Sounds a lot like Vegas, huh?) That being said, I’m glad the new season is here.

Along with the new season comes new ad pushes from MLB and it’s partners. One of the things MLB does the best is embrace its stars. They know the fun personalities and quirky traits are something to be praised (as opposed to stifled in the NFL’s case). Take the “Always Epic” campaign. Particularly, this standout effort surrounding Brian Wilson and more importantly, his beard.

http://mlbalwaysepic.mlb.com/alwaysepic/brianwilson/#/11

Engaging, allowing the player’s personality to come through, and giving the fan what they want: a deep inside look at one man’s facial hair.

And here are a couple of the better tv efforts surrounding the 2011 season:

Alec Baldwin and John Krasinksi talking trash for New Era:

More Brian Wilson beard-goodness, this time for MLB2K11:

Oh, and here’s Tim Lincecum pitching at 1,000 frames per second off the Phantom for Red Bull

Lastly this Pennant app looks pretty slick. But as a Cubs fan I think I’ll pass on ridicule in iPad form.

Regardless of who you root for. Crack a cold one and enjoy the season.

Here at 1010 HQ we have a bit of a love affair with the fermented grain mash that is whiskey. And being that we all have our preferences we decided to do a taste test to determine the official 1010 whiskey. Partners Rob and Justin are more Scotch fans, while Glen sticks mostly to Bourbon.

But which would prevail? We each brought in our favorite whiskeys along with a few random bottles we had laying around the office.

Each whiskey was rated on a scale of 1-5 for the following criteria: Nose, Palate, Smoothness, Finish

Here’s how they stacked up:

The Balvenie, 12 year Single Malt Scotch (Score: 47)

Scored high across all categories, particularly the smoothness and finish.

“My partner says the V is pronounced like a W. This whiskey is silly like that.” – Glen

Buffalo Trace, Kentucky Straight Bourbon (Score: 32.5)

Lower scores particularly on the Nose.

“If you’re getting your leg amputated in a Civil War reenactment, this is the goods.” – Rob

Bulleit Bourbon, Kentucky Straight Bourbon (Score: 37.5)

Glen’s highest rated. Disliked by Rob.

“You should not be allowed to drink this without a mustache. I don’t have a mustache.” – Rob

Bushmill’s Black Bush, Irish Whiskey (Score: 34.5)

Average scores with a particularly high 5 for Finish from Justin.

“Alternate Names: Bushy Fruit, Juicy Bush.” – Justin

Jack Daniels, Tennessee Sour Mash Whiskey (Score: 22)

Justin still drinks this. The rest of us outgrew college.

“This tastes like it should be bought (and consumed) in bulk.” – Rob

Maker’s Mark, Kentucky Straight Bourbon (Score: 31)

Average scores overall.

“Starting to get a headache. 99-cent Wendy’s crispy chicken and a few Sea Salt Kettle chips may not be enough padding. Oh, and this isn’t as large an improvement over Jack as I once thought. Could also be the headache.” – Justin

Lagavulin, 16 year Single Malt Scotch (Score: 46.5)

Mediocre scores by the Bourbon-man Glen, but high marks from the rest. Justin’s fave.

“Like a long lost foreign friend. I may not understand a fucking word you’re saying, but I fucking love you man. And your newsboy hat is legit.” – Justin

Sazerac, Straight Rye Whiskey (Score: 29.5)

Only Rye in the bunch. Supposedly the only whiskey made prior to prohibition.

“Is that a licorice aftertaste? – says the strip-club patron.” – Glen

Springbank, 10 year Single Malt Scotch (Score: 47)

Particularly high marks for Smoothness and Finish. Although Rob may have skewed results since his family is involved, as this was his fave.

“How can you be single when you taste so good?” – Justin

Yamazaki, 12 year Single Malt Scotch (Score: 38.5)

High marks from Glen with average results from the rest.

“A respectable scotch, but I had higher expectations given its age. My parents probably say the same thing.” – Rob

And the result is???

A tie between The Balvenie and Springbank.

So that settles it. 1010 is a scotch group despite Glen’s preference.

Regardless we have a lot left, so stop by and judge for yourself. Find us here at the HQ for all your whiskey needs.
