Found this video years ago on YouTube, and added it to my ‘Philosophy’ playlist a little bit later. Just now, I was watching the animation ‘Rooted’. The music sounded familiar. Where did I hear that before? … Suddenly it came to me, it sounds like the background music in the video above, ‘Instruction Manual For Life’. Perfect timing. Why, you ask?
All kids and grown ups should watch this YouTube video at least once in their life. It’s about all the different kinds of religions in this world, different beliefs. And how narrowmindedness can harm people around you, and your own friendships.
You could even broaden the message expressed in this video. Be openminded to the way other people lead their lives. It might not be your way of life, but let others choose how they would like to live.
I’m posting this today because I just saw a talkshow on Dutch TV called ‘Pauw&Witteman’, where a discussion took place between Mariska de Haas (general editor of a catholic Dutch newspaper) and Barbara Barend (sports reporter, married to a woman). De Haas is prejudiced about kids growing up in a family with two gay partners. According to this woman kids can’t grow up happy in such a family. Both a father and a mother must be present, according to this ‘de Haas’-woman.Well, get real, Haas-creature!
Every family is different. And in 99.99% of ALL families ‘shit happens’. A father or mother dying at a very young age, parents neglecting their children, a parent suffering from depression ‘leaning’ heavily on the children, a biological father that wouldn’t take responsibility or doesn’t even know that the child exists, parents who never learned or just don’t know how to nourish a child, cuddle, give children the love they need, and set boundaries. I could continue this list, and fill pages. But I won’t. What matters:
The happiness of a child, or the ‘happy childhood’ doesn’t depend on the sexual preferences of their parents. It depends on the personality of the parents, if they can cope with difficult circumstances that happen in their life. Be there. Listen. Give warmth and love.
I think a kid would be lucky to grow up with Barbara Barend as a mother. She radiates love and friendliness, has a succesfull job to pay the bills with, she’s smart and seems to be balanced.
So, ‘kids’ of narrowminded parents, Mariska de Haas and alike, watch this Instruction Manual For Life video, and learn. Be inspired. Contemplate. Let people be. And sing along with Raul Midon’s ‘Next Generation’. And live happily ever after.For me Jacques Brel was a punk before Johnny Rotten.

Eigenlijk heb ik deze poëzie al een hele tijd geleden ‘gevonden’. In Frankrijk werd het voorgedragen tijdens een wandeling. Het raakte me diep. Van Tjitske Janssen, uit ‘Het moest maar eens gaan sneeuwen’.
