BACK TO SPACE-CON
Feature Documentary/Fandom

Director: Tom Wyrsch
garfieldlaneproductions.com/SpaceCon.html

EAST COAST PREMIERE

ABOUT THE FILM
On February 22, 1975, Northern California’s very first Star Trek convention was held at Lincoln High School in San Francisco, CA. It was called “The Red Hour Festival.” A huge success with the fans of the original TV series (1966-69), the smash event led to much larger conventions in San Francisco, Oakland and Los Angeles. These “Space-Con” conventions left an indelible mark on the science-fiction fans and “Trekkers” who attended. In the end, conventions like Space-Con helped awaken Paramount from hibernation and led to the creation of the first installment of the major motion picture series “Star Trek” in 1979. This full-length documentary film is the story of how fandom revolutionized an industry.  Written by: Tom Wyrsch , Source: IMDB.com

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Born in San Francisco, California, Tom Wyrsch moved with his parents to Sonoma County at an early age. He worked most of his career for a major U. S. gift company as its West Coast Operations Manager. Always an avid collector of film and books related to movie-making, he began studying film production in the late 1970s. After the gift company closed its West Coast operations, Wyrsch decided to pursue a life-long goal of making films. A close friend of Bob Wilkins and John Stanley of “Creature Features” fame, Wyrsch produced a documentary about the popular Bay Area-based TV series entitled WATCH HORROR FILMS, KEEP AMERICA STRONG: A JOURNEY INTO CREATURE FEATURES. Numerous theatrical screenings in 2008 were followed by a DVD release in 2009, making the documentary a very successful venture.  Because he had worked with Richard Tuck in El Cerrito, CA., designing Playland-not-at-the-Beach, a museum dedicated to the fondly remembered San Francisco amusement park, Wyrsch decided to make his second documentary, REMEMBERING PLAYLAND AT THE BEACH, which premiered at San Francisco’s Balboa Theater on March 16, 2010 to a sold-out house. Seven more sold-out screenings led to a near 5 month run. With two documentaries to his credit, Wyrsch has now completed his third,  BACK TO SPACE-CON.  Source: garfieldlaneproductions.com

Director: John Wardlaw

FLORIDA PREMIERE / Independent Filmmaker*

ABOUT THE FILM
The final performance of the late Jonathan Harris (LOST IN SPACE) highlights this risque and screwy parody of HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS. Harris narrates the tale and plays the mean-minded Bolt who hates the citizens of Scewville because his threads are too tight. Can Cindy Loose Screw find a way to foil his plan to screw Christmas? Harris is joined by his former TV LOST IN SPACE co-stars Bill Mumy, Angela Cartwright and Marta Kristen, who portray the Ratchet family in a quick bonus parody of A CHRISTMAS CAROL.  Source: filmmaker

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
John Warlaw is an award-winning filmmaker, photographer and musician. After graduating from Santa Barara’s Brooks Institute of Photography in 1993. While directing and editing are his preferred jobs, John has worked in many of the various aspects of film making in features, shorts and music videos. These included sound recordist, sound mixer, composer, writer and even in front of the camera as an actor. In 2001 John decided to return to animation and had the pleasure of working with actor Jonathan Harris (LOST IN SPACE, A BUGS LIFE) who did the fabulous narration and the voice of ‘the Bolt’. As a tribute to Harris, Wardlaw added the voices of Harris’ friends and LOST IN SPACE cast-mates, Marta Kristen, Angela Cartwright and Bill Mumy to the film as well.
Wardlaw lives in Santa Barbara, California, with his wife and four cats.  Source: filmmaker

The Mechanical Misfits are an all girls team stumbling through their first foray into combat robotics and Elizabeth and Danielle are a formidable pair looking to reign supreme during their last year of high school.

Through all this, a secret about Laura is exposed that shakes to the very core of the crew, threatening to break it up, challenge the trust that she’s earned with the Browncoats, and undo all the efforts she has put into place to keep a sense of peace in her life since the Unification War.

ABOUT THE FILM
THE CITY DARK is a feature documentary about light pollution and the disappearing night sky, premiering in competition at the 2011 South by Southwest Film Festival (SXSW 2011). Director: Tiffany Shlain

CLOSING NIGHT FILM

ABOUT THE FILM

Between texts and tweets, memes and microchips, we’ve become great at breaking the world down into byte-sized bits. In the process we’ve stopped seeing the forest for the trees, never mind the root system that connects them all. In Connected, Tiffany Shlain—award-winning filmmaker and founder of The Webby Awards—sets out to explore these bonds with the help of her father, acclaimed author and thinker Dr. Leonard Shlain. When the unexpected happens during the making of the film, Tiffany is forced to reexamine everything she thought she knew about life, relationships, and connectedness. Tracing interdependence through history, she discovers the surprising links between right brain and left; alphabets and power; honey bees and stress; hormones and happiness; technology and nature; progress and consequences; and parents and children. The result is a personal film with universal resonance that encourages viewers to make connections of their own. Offering an exhilarating stream-of-consciousness ride, CONNECTED is a journey through the interconnectedness of humankind, nature, progress and morality at the dawn of the 21st century. For centuries we’ve been declaring independence. With insight, curiosity, and humor, this film asks if it’s time to declare our interdependence instead.
Presented By The Moxie Institute (moxieinstitute.org). In Association with Impact Partners.

All Lodge wants is for his gaming group to finish their adventure. Unfortunately, they’re more interested in seducing barmaids, mooning their enemies, and setting random villagers on fire.
Desperate to rein in his players, Lodge injects two newbies into the distrust: a non-player character controlled by Lodge, who the power gamers immediately distrust, and the rarest gamer of all — a girl. Can the group overcome their bickering to save the kingdom, or will the evil necromancer Mort Kemnon triumph unopposed?

ABOUT THE FILM
Tim, a comic book store clerk puts an advertisement in the newspaper looking for people to travel with him to Chicago. Together with his reluctant best friend and the three misfits that respond to the ad, they head out in an old RV to Chicago. Tim’s final destination is a fantasy/comics convention where he will unveil his new game world in the hopes of winning the Dungeons and Dragons competition for best original idea.
When they find themselves lost in the back roads of the Midwest, Tim entertains them with the story of his dark world. But as their journey becomes an adventure of its own, each telling of his fantasy world seems to nudge it closer to reality. Soon, the travelers own personal secrets and desires will pull them all in to the unraveling story. And eventually to find their way out, they will all have to abandon their individual ideas of who and what they are and come together to make a choice.
The values in question reflect the current conflicts facing many Americans, and people around the world; is it the dreams that are sold to us in media and culture or the real-life every day encounters and interactions that will inevitably shape us into who we want to be? What will it be that eventually defines right and wrong and how we treat those around us as the world around us grows uncertain and dark? Source: filmmaker

ABOUT THE FILM
Once upon a time three female filmmakers were lamenting the current state of the male-dominated horror genre over cosmopolitans at the annual Genghis Con convention when inspiration, propelled by a good vodka buzz, struck…
“Hey, why don’t we make a feminist horror film?” they mused.
The three in question were Paula Haifley (www.heyflea.com), Jane Rose (www.jane-rose.com) and Devi Snively (www.deviantpictures.com) who all had films screening at the annual Pretty-Scary Women in Horror Film Festival run by Heidi Martinuzzi (www.pretty-scary.net) and Amy Lynn Best (www.happycloudspictures.net)
Nursing a hangover on the ride home from Pittsburgh, Devi whipped up a script. A few months later, she returned to the Steel City to shoot the five-minute short with fellow horror filmmakers Jane and Amy and the special FX by Midian Crosby (http://www.monstersfrommidian.com). Source: deviantpictures.com

ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
With film titles such as TEENAGE BIKINI VAMPIRE and CONFEDERATE ZOMBIE MASSACRE! it’s no wonder writer/directrix Devi Snively’s signature “romantic musical horror comedy” genre has been likened to everything from the silent classics of Buster Keaton to EC Comics to Tim Burton and beyond.
Devi (pronounced DAY-vee) is an adjunct professor at the University of Notre Dame where she teaches her always over- enrolled course “Cultures of Fear: Anthropological Perspectives of the Horror Film,” the impetus for her upcoming book. She has worked professionaly as a ballerina, Spanish translator, hair model, book editor, video game writer, documentary filmmaker, newspaper columnist and video editor. She’s been decidedly unprofessional in several other careers.
In 2007 she was selected as one of eight participants to the prestigious American Film Institute (AFI) Directing Workshop For Women (DWW). To date she’s written multiple feature-length screenplays, directed nine short films and a feature-length documentary, and has just finished shooting her first feature-length narrative, TRIPPIN’ (also screening at Geek Film Festival). ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Chicago-native and Miami-transplant, Anthony Dones has been shooting films for nearly two decades. His cinematography credits include ‘The Gun’, ‘Killswitch Billy’, the ‘Dark Knight’ fan films, and ‘Quarterlifers’, as well as countless music videos and industrials. He is an artist in almost every respect–writing, art, music, philosophy, photography and cinematography–which is why he is passionate about film. Film is the only medium that allows him to express the multiplicity and range of all his artistic talent within one medium. His approach to cinematography is driven by his quest to capture the art, emotion, movement, the play between light and dark, and the spirituality of the human condition. HEADLINING GEEK GUEST FILMMAKERS - 2 PLAYER PRODUCTIONS PANEL*

ABOUT MINECRAFT
Over the past year, the computer game Minecraft has become a cultural phenomenon, drawing millions of players into the unique, low-res world created solely by Swedish programmer Markus “Notch” Persson. When Persson announced that he would invest his Minecraft earnings in founding his own development house, Mojang AB, 2 PLAYER PRODUCTIONS seized upon the rare opportunity to fly to Stockholm and document the first week in the life of the new studio.
During the editing of what was supposed to be a twenty-minute short, it became clear that an important chapter of gaming history was still being written, and that a feature-length documentary about Mojang’s first year would make a powerful statement about what it means to create, release, and play games in the twenty-first century.
For the first time, viewers will be given an in-depth look at both the triumphs and the challenges faced by a studio during their first year in existence.  2 PLAYER will analyze the unprecedented success of Minecraft, gain insight into its impact from journalists and industry professionals, and meet the fans whose lives have been changed by the game.
Using the short as a proof-of-concept, 2 PLAYER turned to the revolutionary fundraising site Kickstarter.com to completely finance the film’s production. By sourcing the budget from the game’s immense fanbase, it empowers the consumer to vote for content they want with their wallets and fosters a more direct relationship between themselves and the final product. The Kickstarter crowdsourcing project was a success and the feature length production is in full swing. Source: filmmaker

ABOUT 2 PLAYER PRODUCTIONS

2 Player Productions is a Portland, Oregon-based production company dedicated to documenting the world of video games and the rich subcultures that have sprung up around the medium. Combining innovative production techniques with an eye for poignancy, their documentary work invokes both the heart and the mind, humanizing the often denigrated gaming industry.
2 Player Productions was formed in 2005 by filmmakers Paul Owens, Paul Levering, and Asif Siddiky. Their breakout success came in 2008 with REFORMAT THE PLANET, a feature length documentary chronicling the global chip music scene. It debuted at South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival in 2008 and has played to eager audiences around the world.
Capable of bringing their unique style to any project, the team has built a reputation within the film, music, and gaming communities. Collaborators have included Sony, MTV, G4, CurrentTV, Pitchfork Media, Spike TV, Gametrailers.com, Video Games Live, and 8bitpeoples. 2 PLAYER’S most recent success PENNY ARCADE: THE SERIES, an episodic documentary chronicling the titular Penny Arcade web-comic, has been regarded as a leap forward in original internet programming.
2 PLAYER projects include PENNY ARCADE: THE SERIES SEASON ONE, an episodic documentary chronicling the titular web-comic, and REFORMAT THE PLANET a feature length documentary about chip rock. They recently completed a successful Kickstarter crowd source fundraising campaign to fund MINECRAFT, a feature length documentary about the gaming phenomenon.

ABOUT REFORMAT THE PLANET (& REFORMAT THE PLANET 1.5) -
REFORMAT THE PLANET (RTP) is a feature length documentary which delves into the movement known as chip music, a vibrant underground scene based around creating new, original music using obsolete video game hardware. Familiar devices such as the Nintendo Game Boy and Nintendo Entertainment System are pushed in new directions with startling results.
REFORMAT THE PLANET began with the intention of documenting the influence of video game culture on an increasingly diverse range of modern art. Originally titled “Play”, the project served as the genesis of 2 PLAYER PRODUCTIONS in 2005. The fledgling crew set out conducting interviews with various artists, including several noted members of the game development community. After documenting several live chip music performances in New York City and being invited to film the first year of the now annual Blip Festival, it was clear that they stood before a rich cultural mine that few were tapping in any long-form projects. The decision to focus the film on the varied personalities of the NYC chip music scene was a quick and obvious one.
Following its premiere at the 2008 South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, RTP continued to play to eager audiences around the globe. Trendsetting music outlet, Pitchfork.com, streamed the film online as part of its new video service - Pitchfork.tv. - and record view numbers resulted in the limited engagement being extended for an additional week.
During preparation for the film’s DVD release, tragedy struck when hard drive failure wiped out nearly the entire film. In the time it took to rebuild the film from the source tapes, 2 PLAYER watched the NYC chip scene evolve in drastic new directions. Changing styles and an influx of new performers is the inspiration for the follow up documentary REFORMAT THE PLANET 1.5 (RTP 1.5) an exclusive feature of the Reformat the Planet DVD release.

The 2 Player Productions mission is to document the world of video games and the rich subculture around them. Source: filmmaker

STAR WARS BEGINS
Feature Documentary/Fandom

Director: Jamie Benning

ABOUT THE FILM
Filmmaker Jamie Benning has finally finished his trilogy of documentary-commentaries. This final chapter concentrates on the first STAR WARS film. Like his two previous documentaries, BUILDING EMPIRE (2006) and RETURNING TO JEDI (2007), STAR WARS BEGINS is an unofficial look at the creation of the classic movie and features deleted scenes, alternate takes and different angles, bloopers, original on set audio recordings and a huge amount of commentary from the cast and crew, culled from every corner of the galaxy.
STAR WARS BEGINS follows the flow of the original movie itself with the deleted scenes added where they would have been, with interviews placed over the top of the action they are describing. The overall effect is much more engrossing than a DVD commentary track and the wealth of material contained makes it a great experience for casual to hardcore fan.
If you’ve never seen the deleted scenes of Jabba the Hutt or Biggs Darklighter on Tatooine, or heard David Prowse saying Vader’s dialogue, then you will get a real kick out of this. Many reviews and comments have centered on the fact that its like watching your favorite movie but from an entirely different perspective.
All of Jamie Benning’s STAR WARS “filmumentaries” are unofficial and completely non-profit exercises. Source: filmmaker

Residing in London, England, Jamie Benning is a film studies graduate and freelance editor in the television industry. He has spent the last decade traveling the world covering sporting events including football (soccer), rugby, and motorsport, in particular the worldwide series Formula One.

ABOUT THE FILM
A coordination with Naughty Dog Studios a behind the scenes, for the latest entry in the UNCHARTED series. Naughty Dog is known for creating the hit franchises “Jak and Daxter” and “Crash Bandicoot”. Considered one of the most prestigious developers in the world, Naughty Dog broke new ground on the PlayStation 3 (PS3) with the stunningly cinematic “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune”. Released in 2009 to universal acclaim and capturing the title of “Game of the Year”, “Uncharted 2: Among Thieves” was an incredible success for the studio, building upon the innovations of it’s predecessor in every way.
Initial work on the sequel began shortly after the release, and in 2010 2 PLAYER PRODUCTIONS was contacted for potential behind the scenes coverage of the development process. Since the positive experience of working on the “Infamous” developer documentary, 2 PLAYER PRODUCTIONS had been looking for the right opportunity to become involved with another Sony game.

With Uncharted 3’s development cycle underway, the timing was right to capture early stages of the new game’s creation.
Released in conjunction with the game’s official announcement after the 2010 Spike TV awards, part one of the documentary focuses on pre-production aspects of the announce trailer and Naughty Dog’s mounting internal pressure to meet expectations set by “Uncharted 2.” The piece shows the crew building the teaser trailer from bare-bone mock-ups at the studio and motion capture and voice over sessions featuring the principal characters. Members of the studio express their aspirations for the new title and discuss the pressures of being one of the worlds most respected studios.  Source: filmmaker

ABOUT THE FILM
Back on on one hot Saturday night in 1958, “Ghoulda” began stirring up a brew of live double feature films on Channel 12 in Richmond, Virginia, thus beginning a tradition of late night horror hosting in the Commonwealth. Since then, on the airwaves and internet, Virginia’s horror hosts have been breaking ground and making things that go bump in the night a little more manageable.
This documentary goes back to the days when local television was king and into the future with the new breed of “Virginia Creepers”. You’ll hear audio going back to 1958, see photos unseen for five decades and watch video clips thought beyond recovery. You’ll get a detailed tour through the Golden Age of TV horror hosting during the 1970s and 80s, as well as a look into the birth of internet hosting and see where the craft is headed.
But more than that, this film takes you through the transformation of television and entertainment in America and explored why this format was so popular, why it matter and why it survives.
For more than 50 years, Virginia’s horror hosts have been inspiring kids to sneak out of bed to watch a monster movie and adults to feel like kids. See why in VIRGINIA CREEPERS: The Horror Host Tradition of the Old Dominion.  Source: filmmaker

ABOUT THE DIRECTORS
Directors Sean Kotz and Chris Valluzzo of Horse Archer Productions.
Horse Archer Productions arose out of a conversation between Chris Valluzzo and Sean Kotz in the summer of 2005 when the two decided that the time was right in the New River Valley for a video production company with the capacity to create both full length feature films as well as commercial and personal video products.
That summer, the two began evaluating various projects and by September, the first two films were in pre-production. The Henry Reed Legacy was the first film Horse Archer decided to pursue and it should reach completion in the early summer of 2008. It is a documentary on the impact of a Giles County legend, Henry Reed, whose musical style and historical position between 19th Century Europe and 21st Century America has been a major influence on Old Time music across the world.
Their second project, HOKIE NATION: A TEAM, A TOWN AND THE BEST DARNED FANS IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL, dominated the Horse Archer Productions work schedule throughout 2006 and 2007, however. This film, which has gone into its second pressing, has been broadcast on WDBJ-7, shown in theaters throughout Virginia, and sold at more than two dozen locations and websites. This full length feature documentary put Horse Archer Productions on the map and enabled the company to expand.
In 2008, Horse Archer Productions began working on several new projects with their new HD cameras beginning with WHY OLD TIME?, a documentary about the life and culture surrounding Old Time music. This film about Appalachian music culture and its appeal across boarders was selected for the Asheville Film Festival and by special invitation to the Seven Sisters Cinema regional documentary series.
VIRGINIA CREEPERS: THE HORROR HOST TRADITION OF THE OLD DOMINION arrived in 2009. A documentary on Virginia’s late night TV horror movie hosts like Bowman Body, Count Gore De Vol and Dr. Madblood, the film covers 50 years of TV tradition and uncovered much lost footage, audio and even shows. It was selected for to the 2009 Virginia Film Festival and by special invitation to the James River Film Festival. And after just one month of release, it was also nominated for “Best Independent Production 2009” in the Rondo Hatton Classic Horror Film Awards, chaired by David Colton of USA Today.
Horse Archer Productions also works on private, corporate and commercial video projects for various clients in Virginia. Source: horsearcherproductions.com

MIAMI PREMIERE / Filmed in Miami / Creature Entertainment*

ABOUT THE FILM
ZOMBIE YEARS: THANKS GRANDPA is a short film that takes place in a post-apocalyptic Miami, Florida overrun by the living dead. When all that exists is death, it takes more than survival to understand life, and we see Delilah “Del” Esquinosa go about this in her own way, from finding a new companion… to keeping old ones. What is family, friends, or even life itself when faced with the dead who won’t DIE?
THANKS GRANDPA is a vignette prequel based on the ongoing web-comic ZOMBIE YEARS (zombieyears.com). It tells the story of one of its main characters, Delilah “Del” Esquinosa, and what she did before she met her compatriots. It ties in directly to the story line of ZOMBIE YEARS.  Source: creatureentertainment.com/projects/film/zombie-years-thanks-grandpa/

ABOUT THE DIRECTORS
Julio Alvarez — Global wayfarer and student of the elements of ‘the story’, Julio Alvarez, is dedicated to revealing the detail and hyperrealism of the moment. His photographic and filmic artistry reflects his curiosity for–and ability to capture–the immediacy, expression, limitless beauty, entertainment and innate importance of the narrative, whether that story is a movie or in a still photograph. He received training in the Theater Arts as a student of the Center for Expressive Arts under Lou Alexiou and the Performing and Visual Arts Center (a precursor to the New World School of the Arts). Julio’s rolling stone tendencies have led him to live and work all over the U.S., Europe and Central Asia. He has worked as a sound recording engineer, producer and mixer for over two decades. As a filmmaker, he has worked on corporate industrials, independent narrative films, promotional films and music videos in the capacity of director, shooter, location sound mixer, sound designer and editor. Julio’s curiosity for the nuanced details of a good story and his expertise in the technical components of picture and sound allow him to naturally draw out the each performer’s uniqueness with profound grace, imbuing each film with a distinctive and timeless story of its own.

Juan Navarro — Born and raised in Hialeah (“agua, fango y factoría”) Florida, Juan Navarro has been writing for roughly ten years, making comic books for fifteen, and drawing and painting for over two decades. Fueled by a steady diet of comic books and Heavy Metal, Juan attended several Magnet programs in Miami including the Norland Middle School Arts Program and the Design and Architecture Senior High School. He graduated from the Performing and Visual Arts Center (PAVAC) at Miami Northwestern Senior High School and went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the New World School of the Arts at the University of Florida. He is the creator and artist of the web comic series Zombie Years since 2008, a founding member of Graphicsmash.com, and a founding illustrator for Steampunk Magazine. He also is a co-director of the CS Gallery in North Miami and the Art Director for the Oliva Cigar Company. He has lived and worked in Chicago, Savannah, San Francisco and, of course, his hometown Miami Florida. Source: creatureentertainment.com

CONNECTED: AN AUTOBLOGOGRAPHY ABOUT LOVE, DEATH AND TECHNOLOGY
(- A DECLARATION OF INTERDEPENDENCE)
Feature Documentary/Science & Technology
82 minutes/US/English
Director: Tiffany Shlain
connectedthefilm.com
