    365 Project August 2010

Man, the month of August sure went by fast. In fact, it feels like the shortest month I’ve ever experienced. I wonder why that is. Anyway, I present you with a bunch of photos all shot with my iPhone 3GS — one picture every day, all in landscape and all of them completely untouched straight from the camera roll. Enjoy. If that’s even remotely possible. In the voice of the late & great Marlon Brando: Lighten up, it’s a celebration!

Music Video: Breakbot – Baby I’m Yours

Click here to view the embedded video.

A lot of videos lately. I like nice music videos, that’s why. This sort of new (3 months old) animated video was created by painting 2000 watercolor sheets/frames. The video is 2:30 minutes long, that means 13.3 frames a second. That’s roughly half the amount used in video on the net; 30 fps (frames per second) and TV; 25 fps and movies at the cinema; 24 fps.

Breakbot aka Thibaut Berland is a French producer (what else did you expect?) and DJ. I don’t really like the song but I do like the video. It’s nice to see artists using traditional techniques instead of having software do all the work. I know there’s no magic button to press when working with computers but doing a thing like this in a video editing application would have been a hell of a lot easier. Wizz, the company behind the Breakbot video did the post production for the WWF ad that’s currently floating about all over the net. Have a look:

Music Video: Miami Horror – I Look To You

“Come on guys, we need something to work with — what should we base the Miami Horror video on?” “I think a supernova dress and a prairie will do the trick, we can do what the hell we want — we are directors of music videos!”. I don’t know if the producers of the video had that exact conversation but it is possible. If they did have that exact conversation it sure wasn’t long ago since the video was posted on Vimeo a mere 17 hours ago by the band themselves.

    Back To Wood Working

Holy moly, close to TEN days without a single update on the blog. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again a thousand times; having your own independent blog funded out of your own pocket is soooooo nice. Not having to worry about ad revenue and SEO optimization. What a rat race that must be. Anyway, I’m back in the wood shop! The place looks just as we left it before the summer hiatus. I’m relieved to have the traumatic moment of slot cutting with the router behind me, I was worried, not about the design but the fact that the wood easily get burned when routing. Lo and behold — it went without a hitch. Or spark. I present you with two giant photos of the Birch Cutting Boards:

I’m going to sand the edges down just a tad. The edges need to be quite sharp to give the “handles” some grip when lifting. Some additional sanding (by hand) remains still and then it’s time for some coats of finish. I hate to let them go and I’d really like to keep at least one for myself. If I do miss them when they’re gone I can always do two more, or ten.

Music Video: The Naked and Famous – Young Blood + Remix!

Click here to view the embedded video.

Found this over at Neon Gold Records. Great track from Down Under (New Zealand in this case) and a really nice video to go with it. This act is brand new to me (the way I like it). Not much in the way of info on the video other than that it’s produced by Special Problems. Their debut album ‘Passive Me, Aggressive You’ will be out on the 6:th of September but the info on the official site says “New Zealand only”. Kind of cryptic… Anyway, go check out the links below.

    UPDATE!
Brand new remix released today 9/1/2010. It’s a nice blippy rework by my fellow Swedes The Sound of Arrows. Download (16.4MB) and enjoy! Alt. download just to be safe.

    iPhone App: PictureShow

I’ve got a new favorite photo app for the iPhone and it’s called PictureShow. I swore by the awesome Camera+ app just a week ago but I wanted to do some crazy image effects lately and PictureShow is so much better when it comes to wild, over-processed stuff. The developers behind Camera+ are somewhat crazy on their own — their app was just yanked from the App Store by Apple since they sneaked in a “banned” feature in their app. The feature was welcomed by the users of the app, you could use the hardware volume sliders as a shutter when taking photos. Apple didn’t like that, at all. They asked developer tap tap tap to remove the “feature” which they didn’t and now the app is gone until they comply with Apple’s rules. Read more about the incident over at TUAW, I don’t wanna talk about it any longer. I’ll just add this: it’s a viral marketing stunt orchestrated by tap tap tap. Hey, this post was supposed to be about PictureShow! OK, Let’s start off with a video. Um, no — let’s not. Their promo video is so badly shot that I refuse to post it. But how will we know what the app is all about? Well, see the pictures above? Compare them to the original files straight from my iPhone 3GS by clicking the “Read More” button. The post continues after that you see. Click it and read the rest — it’s that simple. Trust me. Click it.

So, here are the pictures before being totally destroyed in PictureShow. I’m afraid you’ll have to scroll up and down to be able to fully compare the (in this case) “After & Before” pictures. Kind of like an adventure. Scrolling is a huge part of being on-line and on the computer these days — I’m sure you’re already used to the technique. It’s real easy, try it! Mac and iPad readers can swipe with their fingers. So cool.

If you’d like to you could do more gentle and discreet editing in the app, stuff like adding a soft vignette or simply make it look like it’s scratched and worn. there are 25 photo styles to choose from including the mandatory PopArt, Holga, Retro and Lomo effects. In the upper right corner of the app is the handy “Randomize” button, it’s pretty handy if you run out of inspiration or further editing ideas. Bare in mind though, the button won’t take amazing pictures for you, it simply messes around with what you already shot. You have to take the pictures yourself, the app won’t do more than it’s designed to do which is apply filters and effects to whatever you provide it with. It won’t add delay to your songs and it wont add subtitles or slow motion to your videos. It only does photos. I like that you can edit the color values separately; red, green and blue. You can also mess around with brightness and contrast. There are a bunch of frame styles and stuff like that, they are all useful in one way or the other. It’s really cheap too, maybe they lowered the price to get even more people to buy it now that Camera+ is out of the App Store. Sneaky! Normal price for PictureShow: $1.99. Current super low price: $0.99! It’s totally worth it, trust me. Oh, and thank you for reading all of this. A whole post without correct formatting, all the text just blends into one big mess. Makes your eyes bleed, doesn’t it? You are brave my friend.

Music Video: The Sound of Arrows – Into the Clouds

Click here to view the embedded video.

This video was posted about one year ago over at Vimeo. A lot of people are eagerly awaiting TSOA’s debut album — will there be one at all? I’m not really sure. Whenever I see this video or even when I’m listening to TSOA I think of The Neverending Story — not the novel — but the movie. If they ever do a remake of that movie TSOA should be involved in the soundtrack/score.

TED Talk: Elizabeth Gilbert – Creativity

Click here to view the embedded video.

This really is an amazing talk. It’s been up on the TED site for over a year now and I have wanted to post it here since day one of this blog. Info:

Elizabeth Gilbert muses on the impossible things we expect from artists and geniuses — and shares the radical idea that, instead of the rare person “being” a genius, all of us “have” a genius. It’s a funny, personal and surprisingly moving talk.

It’s raining outside, it’s Saturday. What better way to spend the day indoors than doing creative stuff? I’m messing around with camera apps for my iPhone and checking out what other users have come up with at Flickr. It would be nice to write a song or two but I can’t do that at the moment. My best ideas attack me when I don’t have direct access to my recording equipment — like when I’m on a bus or when I’m about to go to sleep. Granted, there are several music creation apps for the iPhone that I can use — but they are still in their infancy and a bit too fiddly on a shaking subway train. Creativity comes whenever it wants to, I can’t control it and that’s what this TED Talk is about. It’s totally worth 20 minutes of your day.

Almost every person on earth have seen the Dove Campaign For Real Beauty video called “Evolution” by now. There are several parodies of the groundbreaking video out on the net — almost all of them bad. This one on the other hand, is really good. It’s made by Blink Productions, the same team who did the super popular flame thrower video for Dancing Pigeons. I’m sure I will post more videos from these guys in the future. I posted the original Dove video below for those who have not seen it.

Music Video: Midnight Juggernauts – Vital Signs

Click here to view the embedded video.

This video is not exactly brand new, it’s FOUR months old. I’m kind of going for newer stuff in this category but Vital Signs is just one of those videos that — if you like it — grips you and never let go. Granted, the music is no small part in this grip either. So, the video by Krozm (a film directing duo consisting of Chris Hill and Lachlan Dickie) is kind of new but the technique behind it is older even though it looks like cutting edge special effects. Zbig Rybczynski made a short called “The Fourth Dimension” back in 1988 which featured this weird swirly look called Slit-Scan. Here are some pictures from his film:

I’m not going to tell you how this works but you can read about Rybczynski here and read about other artists using the style here.
