Situation on the west coast of the Baltic island of Öland, Villa Widlund stands out as a solid white, geometric, concrete landmark in perfect contrast with a backdrop of picturesque ocean views and serene beach landscapes. Construction and furnishings are minimal so that each room highlights the windows and spectacular outdoor views. Everything about this modern beach villa is dreamy – I’d have trouble deciding to be in or out!

Hi folks-who-follow-my-sketchblog. Just wanted to let you know that I just quit my proverbial day job and I’m available for freelance work. I actually do more than draw wry cartoons. I’m serious. If you’re curious, you can find out more about me and what I have to offer. Or, just ignore my self-serving pandering, and watch this space for more of what you came here for: IRONIC JOKES.
[Electric Imp]
Ever want to know how hats are actually made? You're in luck! Sara Grundy of Sorensen Grundy Milliners will let you in on the secret. After dark, in the millinery workroom, mini maintenance workers construct hats in the most clandestine way. Here she shows us, in pictures, what actually goes on when no one is looking.
This particular hat is called "Construction Overhead."
"The impulse behind making the hat was based on a combination of factors," said Grundy when we asked her what the inspiration was behind this idea. "There has always been a tradition in millinery to make miniature versions of traditional hat shapes such as the Victorian mini top hat and as a company we have tended to play with scale quite often making mini trilbies, berets, top hats and other classic shapes. We wanted to take this further by playing with the idea of scale for this piece.
"As we both have children we are constantly immersed in stories and films about miniature worlds, such as Arrietty, The Borrowers and Gulliver's Travels. Revisiting and appreciating these stories as adults has probably encouraged a desire to create something whimsical.
"Model millinery involves a hat being completely hand made and often there is a huge amount of hand sewing involved. Because it's such hard work and takes such a long time we have often daydreamed about having the help of a miniature workforce or leaving something half finished that get's magically completed overnight. We trained together in a millinery workroom making hats for Paris and London fashion shows and know what it feels like to be working away behind the scenes and through the night.
"We like to think that there is humour to our work and as well as wanting to make something that is amusing we also wanted to stretch the definitions of what millinery can be. 'Construction Overhead' is an imagined scenario, a hat capturing a moment in a fantasy narrative which hopefully offers more than just something to be worn on the head."
Carboard Cities, a site of illustration and art by Laura Redburn feature collage works. Many focus on dreamy, hazy scenes with her newest showcasing women and nature. Symbolism is used quite a bit in her work, with the main subjects often feeling removed, displaced, or something to conceal.

Laura also did an animation featuring some of her collages. Check it out below:

I was led to Brooklyn design studio Dark Igloo's work through Web Urbanist's recent post on their creative Google mural. After looking through Dark Igloo's Flickr stream, I came across a set called Analog Interactive Mural that just made me smile from ear to ear. Love how they've created a set of black and white framed art pieces that seem to interact. Stare at them for a bit and you'll see hidden stories emerge.
Check out these two murals (the first one has some close-up shots.) Talk about transforming boring white walls...
Thanks for downloading and listening “Elements 01″ compilation. We really hope you enjoyed as much as we enjoyed compiling it. Elements 1 is compiled and curated by The Future Elements. It has 35 tracks and lot of them were provided exclusively by artists. Its a free download compilation. The Future Elements is a site [ and to be extended as a micro label ] which features Reviews / Interviews / Mixes / Compilation etc. We mainly cover styles such as Ambient, Post-Rock, Drone, Electroacoustic / Experimental, Shoegaze, Dreampop, Indie etc.
FAQ:
1. So its a free download compilation? That’s just so awesome!
Ans. Yes! However, Bandcamp charges extra for download credits. After we reach, upper limit of that, album already becomes paid. For now, we have 500 [ 200 free + 300 purchased ] download credits. After reaching these limits, album can be downloaded from [ Mediafire ] for free and it will become paid download on bandcamp. The money we receive from it will straightly go to buy further more download credits from bandcamp.
2. I can’t download individual tracks. Why?
Ans. Because its simple. Lot of artists worked hard on their music and to feature on compilation. Its meant to be
listened / downloaded together. Also, we lose download credits from bandcamp. In future (compilations), we may change individual tracks to paid download while compilation as a whole will remain free download. Money received from individual tracks will go for purchasing more download credits.
3. You have lot of awesome artists featured on compilation. Were there any more compilations by you or will there be any?
Ans. Well yes. The Future Elements might function as a record label in future. And we believe this compilation is a big step forward for that. There were no other compilations by The Future Elements but Noor (The Future Elements) curated two compilations for Japan fundraising. [ Hope For Japan ] and [ More Hope For Japan ]. We also hope to present at least two compilations per year and hopefully, next one will be really special or conceptual.
4. Who designed those awesome covers and your website?
Ans. Nitin Garg from India. He is a kick ass communication designer. [ Nitin Garg ].
5. Really cool. I would like to be a part of The Future Elements or maybe I would love to submit my musical works for next compilation.
Ans. Sure! For any query please email; thefuturelements@gmail.com and make sure you visit our website: [ The Future Elements ].

Grabit is a door handle fitted with a fingerprint scanner. The door opens only if it recognizes the fingerprint, however that’s not the coolest part. What makes this design plausible and functional is the position of the scanner. It’s placed at the most ergonomically viable place, making the act of opening (or locking) a door, very fluid.

Artist Statement
I am drawn to the concept and process of constructing something from the ground up, from physical structures to entire subcultures. Being in my mid twenties, I have been teetering somewhat comfortably between resisting certain conventions of adulthood and the struggle to carve out some modest piece of this world. I am using themes of construction and disassembly to relate my pursuit for security and my desire for autonomy, two things that seem to regularly be put at odds with one another.
Furthermore, I depict physical construction partially as a metaphor for the creation of a community or subculture. In the instances of punk rock and skateboarding, the twin pillars of my adolescence, these subcultures were built up and became forces greater than—but controlled by—their participants, forming niches for those of us who seemingly had been pushing square pegs into round holes. More importantly, they were formed in part through a kind of sociocultural appropriation, showing that structures put in place to satisfy order and subordination can be repossessed, dismantled, altered, and refocused. The prevailing culture can be reassembled and used as a means to undermine itself.
This work is largely about making something of one’s own, whatever that something happens to be. As we grow up, we are routinely compelled to act against our own best interests, and there will always exist a need for something entirely of our own that we can control.
About The Aritst
When you ride a train back to your hometown, you look out across the vast scenery – into a sky that seems to stand still in its endless blue while the trees and the scattered towns and the telephone wires rush by like a movie reel. In the middle of the country, far away from the bustling city and the boiling traffic is a plain white house with one giant tree and one tiny swing in the yard. The house looks empty and the only car there is a broken-down and rusty one but the swing is swaying in the breeze. And as you pass that yard and the swing and come upon row after row of subdivided neighborhoods with houses that all look exactly the same with the same car in each drive-way and their drivers all leaving at the same time going to virtually the same place – you are still being haunted by that swing.
When I look at Justin Santora’s work, I not only see that swing, but I see the child that once swayed in it. Justin’s prints and illustrations are complex in process and thought but simple in beauty. The ideas of innocence and the loss there-of, the weaving memories that shape our lives, and the longing of someone who is outside looking in are all prevalent in the composition of Justin’s work. The nostalgia of childhood that lingers on into our adult lives and the paths of daydreams we want to lose ourselves in are inherent in his art. The starkness of the landscapes and the muted panes of color form an emotional bond with the subject matter of the pieces through the painstakingly detailed fine lines and scratchings of the drawings themselves. Based out of Northern Illinois, Justin’s amazing work stands out as a monument to all of our wishes even in the face of our sometimes daunting reality. - Erin Armstrong, Kill Hatsumomo Prints/Screwball Press

Japanese artist Motoi Yamamoto creates incredibly intricate mazes made entirely out of salt! Currently showing at the Hakone Open-Air Museum in Kanagawa, Japan is one of his newest works entitled "Forest of Beyond."
The story about why Yamamoto started down this path is a sad and tragic one. He was a third-year student at the Kanazawa College of Art in 1996 when his younger sister died at the young age of 24 — two years after being diagnosed with brain cancer. To ease his grief and to honor her memory, he starting working on these installations. Salt has a special place in the death rituals of Japan, and is often handed out to people at the end of funerals, so they can sprinkle it on themselves to ward off evil. Since 2001, he's been creating these amazing floor installations by filling a plastic bottle, usually used for machine oil, with white salt and then sprinkling it on the floor.
The Hakone installation (seen above and immediately below) looks like a giant tree with vein-like branches. Working 14 hours a day, it took him two weeks to complete.
As he told Japan Times, "I draw with a wish that, through each line, I am led to a memory of my sister. That is always at the bottom of my work. Each cell-like part, to me, is a memory of her that I call up, like a tiff I had with her over a pudding cake she took from the fridge. My wish is to put such tiny episodes together."
See a selection of his other incredible works, below.
