hmph.
i need a vacation. i know it’s terrible to say that while sitting in a hotel room in oslo, but for real. i need a week to go somewhere and chill out and read and not have to look at a computer or talk to anyone if i don’t want to.

We arrived in Beirut on Sunday afternoon. Advil pm has changed the way I tour transatlantically. We got to the hotel but then it stopped there. The only time not spent at the hotel was spent rehearsing or performing. Screw getting thrown into Lebanese prisons, we were under hotel arrest or something. I finally got out today with some of the other company members and walked around downtown.
The American ambassador said she was proud of us when she saw the show. Unfortunately not many Lebanese felt the same way. We play a lot with theater etiquette, and it’s weird to perform in a place where theater etiquette isn’t understood at all. And apparently most high schoolers aren’t forced to read romeo and Juliet, so not many people actually know the story, which makes the show less interesting to them. I was waiting for fruit or something to be thrown on stage, bud sadly it never happened. Let’s just say i think it’s Nature Theater’s last jaunt in the Middle East for a while.
…and I still have four days here. Let’s hope Tripoli is amazing.

i think i’m kinda homesick. i’d love to see my family and such, but i also just want familiar food for some reason. and so i decided to post pics of my dad’s restaurant. bert’s chuckwagon was started by my uncle hector’s (married to my actual aunt) brother, umberto ‘bert’ gonzalez. my dad started working for bert when he was 13 and by the time 30, i think, maybe younger, he owned 3 branches. i’ve never known a world without this place. i spent morning and after noons, pre and post school respectively, trying to stave off boredom with the newspaper crossword that i could in no way fill out.
later this year, this building will be demolished. it was built in the 50’s as a gas station, and because of highway developments, it has to be bulldozed. it’s heartbreaking to say the least. and i doubt with my tour schedule that i will be able to be there to see it go down.
ok i lied. completely heartbreaking. overwhelming me at the moment.
(yes, that is jesus and mary on the side. my brothers painted these huge stations of the cross and they made one to fit the side of the building.)
so if you’re ever in st. louis or illinois and want barbecue, you should stop by. if you tell my dad that you know me you will learn where my terrible/awesome sense of humor comes from.
(alos, i know these photos don’t belong to me, but technically in a will some place part of the business does, so i don’t care.)
