Following the Second World War, the American occupation forces remaining in Japan helped to introduce denim ‘jeans’ culture, which would become a global cultural phenomenon.
In 1947, Tsunemi Yonehachi Shoten was established as a U.S Military Surplus clothing store in the Nippori district of Tokyo. The store was a family business, and was to be the starting point for the EDWIN brand, as we know it today.
After many years of dedication to the Tsunemi Yonechi Shoten business, Shuji Tsunemi, the son of the founders was passed ownership in 1961. Mr Tsunemi, had an acute understanding for the power of denim culture, and the potential it represented, having spent some years studying in California.
He recognised the opportunity for importing used, five pocket denims from the U.S. and that year the Tokyo store changed its name to EDWIN (using the letters from the word DENIM, and flipping the M to a W) and quickly became the specialist in reconditioned second hand denims.
We are proud to release the 2011 Fall / Winter collection and celebrate the 50th year of premium quality jeans manufacture, utilising many exclusively developed fabrics both in Japan and Europe.

The Global Language Monitor estimates that there are currently 1,009,753 words in the English language. Despite this large lexicon, many nuances of human experience still leave us tongue-tied. And that’s why sometimes it’s necessary to turn to other languages to find le mot juste. Here are fifteen foreign words with no direct English equivalent.
1. Zhaghzhagh (Persian) The chattering of teeth from the cold or from rage.
2. Yuputka (Ulwa) A word made for walking in the woods at night, it’s the phantom sensation of something crawling on your skin.
3. Slampadato (Italian) Addicted to the infra-red glow of tanning salons? This word describes you.
4. Luftmensch (Yiddish) The Yiddish have scores of words to describe social misfits. This one is for an impractical dreamer with no business sense. Literally, air person.
5. Iktsuarpok (Inuit) You know that feeling of anticipation when you’re waiting for someone to show up at your house and you keep going outside to see if they’re there yet? This is the word for it.
6. Cotisuelto (Caribbean Spanish) A word that would aptly describe the prevailing fashion trend among American men under 40, it means one who wears the shirt tail outside of his trousers.
7. Pana Po’o (Hawaiian) “Hmm, now where did I leave those keys?” he said, pana po’oing. It means to scratch your head in order to help you remember something you’ve forgotten.
8. Gumusservi (Turkish) Meteorologists can be poets in Turkey with words like this at their disposal. It means moonlight shining on water.
9. Vybafnout (Czech) A word tailor-made for annoying older brothers—it means to jump out and say boo.
10. Mencolek (Indonesian) You know that old trick where you tap someone lightly on the opposite shoulder from behind to fool them? The Indonesians have a word for it.
11. Faamiti (Samoan) To make a squeaking sound by sucking air past the lips in order to gain the attention of a dog or child.
12. Glas wen (Welsh) A smile that is insincere or mocking. Literally, a blue smile.
13. Bakku-shan (Japanese) The experience of seeing a woman who appears pretty from behind but not from the front.
14. Boketto (Japanese) It’s nice to know that the Japanese think enough of the act of gazing vacantly into the distance without thinking to give it a name.
15. Kummerspeck (German) Excess weight gained from emotional overeating. Literally, grief bacon.
Personally, ‘Bakku-shan’ is now part of my everyday vocabulary…B

It always makes me smile when I see this ‘message’ scrawled across the wall…
This is a mainland European classic. Not quite understanding the grammatical importance of ‘THE’ between fuck and police. Its a slightly barbaric statement.
This was written in haste, with passion…in a small French country side village, spotted be me this morning whilst taking a stroll to the post office. Rebellion is in the air, the youth aren’t happy and the three village policemen on the bikes are quaking in their hand made boots…
Vive le fuck le everything, something, anything…..
Both Liberty and Edwin have long been highly regarded brands in their own right, exemplifying classic quality in their respective fields.
With this in mind, it felt fitting for Edwin to collaborate on a product that would celebrate these values, in conjunction with the re-launching of Liberty’s Denim Hall.
These classic Edwin ED-55 denim’s are made from our exclusive 14oz Japanese Red Selvage, with the subtle addition of the classic Liberty print used in the detailing of some of the internal components of the denim.

My husband is caught in a bit of a denim rut and needs to update his look. What would you suggest?
Short of sending me a picture (please don’t), it’s hard to know what the issues are but I can imagine he’s probably suffering from either an outdated boot-cut or a waist that makes it look like his bum stretches from his ankles to his shoulder blades. The best course of action is to get him into some classic straight-leg Japanese Edwin jeans (no fancy washes) that will age naturally.

Some time back, ‘JP’ (One of the Edwin family) slipped into a a nice pair of clean, dry ‘straight off the factory floor’ 13.7oz Japanese Rainbow Listed Selvage ED-47’s…
So strong was his bond with this beautiful denim, that he simply didn’t take them off for 413 days. That’s 413 days without a single wash…
Eventually, after much persuasion from his lovely wife ‘Ruth’, he sent them back to his makers… with a kind note. A wise move ‘JP’!
We think its time you moved onto to a fresh pair, in the name of a healthy, ‘denim-smell-free’ relationship….

Check out FREDRIK’S advice on how this beautiful rigid denim should endure its first soak to seal the indigo…Probably the best way in our opinion!
In 1961 Mr. Tsunemi crafted the first pair of Edwin denim jeans in Japan. As part of the 50 year celebrations, Edwin have teamed up with Sivletto and Unionville to produce a modified version of the Nashville.
The usual two tone stitching has been replaced with a dark copper shade, which gives the pants a clean and authentic look based on a time in history when the production of denim was focussed on strength and durability and the simplicity of using only one type of thread in every machine.
To further focus on the collaboration the Edwin tab on the right pocket has been removed and the leather patch artwork has been modified to include the Unionville & Sivletto store names. This limited edition comes complete with a custom made tote bag.

“2 years of wear and tear, 1 soak, 2 washes at 60 degrees, countless hours of partying, fun, art, countless hours of tattooing – hence the ink stains, 2 trips to the US, a trip to France, hiking in the Swiss mountains, one relationship break up and 2 weeks of backpacking through Sweden and Norway.
Now off for third wash…”

After seeing how stiff the bottom of his jeans went in the snow yesterday, Gareth in the UK decided to bury his eleven month old ED-39′s in the back garden for the afternoon to get the crispness back into them. The theory being that it keeps the indigo in, and the dirt out!

To express the feeling of old fabric, we developed an uneven thread, which was produced under non-computer oriented production in the past. We made this to produce thick and thin parts on one twisted thread. This thread is then used for warp and weft in our vintage collection.
For that feeling of old fabric, we used the “shuttle-weaving machine” to produce 13 oz Japanese Selvage Denim. You will notice the white/red Selvage when they are rolled up. We’ve named it 日の丸 Selvage (Hinomaru Selvage) and it features the same colour combination as the Japanese National Flag.
The wash is made to look like the denim is worn out with uneven colours across the denim including the extension & contortion of around the waist that a Vintage denim provides. The denim is carefully worked by skilled craftsmen to get the desired results…
We visited Rudy at ‘Son Of a Stag‘ on Dray Walk in East London earlier in the week as I needed to take a few cm’s off my new ED71’s in Japanese Red Listed Selvage.
He kindly obliged and performed a swift operation using his much sought after union machines. That is what I call good customer service.
For anyone needing amendments, I strongly recommend paying him a visit.
Happy Days!
A bit more about the upcoming W-Craft Denim…
The woven back pocket label features a ‘Ichimatsu Monyou’ or ‘check’ and is a very familiar image from Japanese history. (The colour combination white/red/blue is unified with selvage)
The buttons and rivets are simple and clean. The edge of button represents the decorative thumbtack which was used for the gates of Japanese castles and temples.
The Japanese find beauty in imperfection. Using this philosophy the leather label was created. Deep blue, blurred and uneven.
The pocket bag stamp takes it’s inspiration from a passport and travelling in general. It reads: ‘Immigration – Departed – Made in Japan – 1947′
Back in 2009 we featured an interview in ED Zine – Issue 1 with Mark Westmoreland who kindly made us pair of jeans.
The One denim jean was created over a year ago – the end product of a prototype that took Westmoreland four years to produce, in conjunction with the Shiotoni brothers of Japan.
The US cotton used to produce the One jean is dyed and woven near Hiroshima at a family run mill. A combination of vintage features from Levi’s, Lee, Boss of the Road, Stronghold and Wrangler; an exclusive 100 pairs of ‘One’ jeans will only be available from five retailers worldwide.
A labour of love, his own creation, made with his own fair hands.

I had a really exciting 12 hour day. I did a photoshot for my new Avantgarde-haircollection today.
Really exciting because I did 4 different hairdressings and I also wanted to capture them.
Multitasking and the big help from all of my models and assistant was the key. I am really happy with the results, but i also don´t want to hide my secret-passion.
Backstage-pictures from the "process".
Thx to all for such an exciting day.

I've been flooded with work for the last six months, working on my thesis which is about patina of objects as mean to appropriate.
Reading, writing, interviewing is the trilogy.
I just came back for Paris where I did the first part of my ethnography.
I had the chance to meet with some very interesting people who simply shared their life experiences with me.
Next stop, NYC.
Anyway, my ED-47's haven't aged much even though I've been wearing them a lot lately. Maybe I should change my current lifestyle in order to get some results???

I'm so busy with work at the moment, assisting the master (Look few posts behind) in painting the roof and dome of a castle in Louveciennes, near Paris.
Quite old techniques...
I still pass time to work on my own frames.

There is only so much you can customise on a pair of denim before it become over kill.
But I guess one of the main features that you can mess with is the leather labeling on the back of genrally most denim.
I had a few idea's and i know i'll have more so i decided to make it interchangeable.
Firstly I added eyelets to the actual denim where the label goes as a attachment device.
Then you can thread leather or whatever it maybe to fasten the labels on.
Once I'd done all that I stripped the denim of all the Edwin branding to make my own branded label.
Adding a key chain tipe label to one of them, which is not secured properly (accidentally) so you it actually doubles up as a key chain, if you don't lose it.
After i'd made that label i'd totally ran out of Edwin branded materials so i started experimenting with other ways of making my own branded labels and here are the results.
Watch this space, there's more labelling to come!!
