Emily is the former North American Regional Focal Point for the Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS and a founding member of the HIV Young Leaders Fund Steering Committee. She began working with HIV education 8 years ago, starting with developing and implementing an awareness based educational program for her peers at the high school level. This led to a position on the Board of Directors for The Alliance for Living in New London, Connecticut, representing the Youth Voice regarding involvement and programming. She moved from that to work internationally with local organizations focusing on the social impact of HIV/AIDS at the community level in Costa Rica, Canada, Nicaragua and India.
Currently, she is working predominantly with issues surrounding community building and issues affecting people dealing with homelessness and food insecurity, but she continues to remain committed to assisting youths with developing HIV awareness programs based on their communities and realities.
Recently, she began speaking on youth involvement and training to engage with the HIV epidemic. She participated in the 2008 and 2010 International AIDS Conferences and was the Youth Rapporteur in 2010 and was the Youth Program Coordinator for AIDS 2012.
She holds a degree in Media and Journalism, specializing in photojournalism, and is passionate about traveling and cooking.
The HIV Young Leaders Fund is a new funding mechanism driven by youth-serving HIV networks. The mission of the HIV Young Leaders Fund is to enable new leadership in the AIDS response among young people most-affected by HIV. The Fund will make small grants to youth-led initiatives globally and support projects that focus on young people most-affected by HIV in their community. The priority will be on projects that address the needs of young people living with HIV and groups of most-at-risk young people. An Interim Steering Committee will serve as the governing body for the HIV Young Leaders Fund in 2010. The following organizations sit on this governing body:
Global Network of Sex Work Projects, Global Youth Coalition on HIV/AIDS, GNP+’s Interim Reference Group on Young People Living with HIV, International Treatment Preparedness Coalition, IPPF+ Nepal, Jamaica Youth Advocacy Network, World AIDS Campaign, Youth Coalition for Sexual and Reproductive Rights, Y-PEER, Young Positives, Youth R.I.S.E
