How do you know if you or someone you know may have ADD or ADHD?Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, has been in the news relentlessly as continued reports of Adderall and Ritalin shortages persist. Certainly there has been upward spike in ADHD diagnosis and an enormous increase in prescription medications given to both children and adults. The National Institute of Health (NIMH) estimates as of 2007 were that 5 million children, or about 5 % of all children, had ADHD. That number has increased another 6 % increase since then. Studies show that 70% of children with ADHD continue to have symptoms as adults.
A couple of key points should be considered. One is that normal childhood behaviors such as impulsiveness, boundless energy, aggressiveness, and moodiness are normal behaviors, and there has been an ever growing tendency to label these behaviors symptoms of ADD or ADHD. Since I am a father with a young son with boundless energy, I offer this simple common sense observation, “Boys will be boys.”
My son can be mischievous, disruptive, hard to control, challenges authority, and has boundless energy There has been a ever increasing tendency to try to tag children with the ADD/ADHD diagnosis from educators who simply have a hard time keeping children in line. It borders on the criminal to give these normal children powerful amphetamines when educators, parents, and caregivers are simply overwhelmed and exasperated with the task of keeping children “in line”. I am not speaking of brat behavior, disrespectful or rude behavior, or children who are obnoxious and disobedient. There is often a thin line between normal child behavior and behavior that crosses the line and tired, angry, impatient, or exasperated parenting can get in the way of how to properly control a child’s behavior. Conversations with experienced teachers and parents have convinced me that ADD/ADHD medications have been given to children in record numbers with completely irresponsible and knee-jerk fashion to try to control children that are completely normal and have no business being medicated for simply being active and energetic.
To make a proper diagnosis for ADD and ADHD, the following protocols should must be followed.
1. The child or adult must undergo both a psychiatric and cardiac examination. Psychiatric conditions like depression, anxiety, psychosis, and suicide can be triggered by the use of the above medications. Cardiovascular problems and sudden death can also result from the usage of amphetamines like Adderall. It is irresponsible and reckless to prescribe these medications without these examinations being performed! Sadly, it is the exception and not the rule to do these examinations before prescribing these powerful drugs.
2. A diagnostic test needs to be given to properly evaluate the child or adult to make the proper diagnosis. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders by the American Psychiatric Association, DSM-IV test, provides an 18 symptom checklist for rendering the diagnosis of either ADD, ADHD, or combined type. Often a verbal exchange between the parents of the child and the doctor or the adult patient and doctor is done to make the diagnosis, instead of proper testing. Again, this is in my opinion, shooting from the hip and irresponsible.
3. Childhood ADD/ADHD is properly diagnosed after a child has shown six or more specific symptoms of inactivity and/or hyperactivity on a regular basis for more than six months in more than two settings. Symptoms must have been present before age 7, and symptoms must cause functional impairment in two or more settings, such as in the classroom and at home. Symptoms must not be attributable to any other psychological or physical disorder. The diagnosis of ADD/ADHD involves the gathering of information from several sources, including school, caregivers, and parents. A doctor must consider how a child’s behavior compares with that of other children the same age.
The following is the generally accepted criteria for making a diagnosis for inattention (ADD)
1. Makes careless mistakes in work, schoolwork, or other activities. Frequent failure to give close attention to details.
2. Frequently does not listen or seem to listen when directly spoken to
3. Frequently loses necessary things for activities or tasks, such as books, tools, papers, assignments, objects such as pencils and pens
4. Avoids, doesn’t like, or does not wish to do activities that require sustained mental effort, such as homework or schoolwork
5.Difficulty with organizing tasks or activities
6. Often have problems with paying attention to school or play activities
7. Failure to follow thru with instructions and finishing chores, schoolwork, tasks at work, not because of lack of understanding instructions or opposing the instructions
8. Outside stimuli easily distracts the individual9.Frequently forgetful in everyday activity
The nine for impulsiveness and hyperactivity:
1. Gets out of chair or seat in classroom or work when staying seated is required or expected
2. Often intrudes on others or interrupts, in conversations or activities
3. Talks too much
4. Can’t wait for their turn
5.Has difficulty playing or engaging activities quietly
6. Is constantly on the go, revved up like a motor
7. Runs around, restless, climbs or moves about excessively in situations which are inappropriate
8. Blurts out answers before questions are completed9. Frequently squirms while seated and/or moves hands and feet
typically diagnosed in childhood, ADD and ADHD, still affects many teenagers. The symptoms, inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity are intrusive, and must seriously interfere with a teen’s life. During teen years, especially as the hormonal changes of adolescence are occurring, symptoms of ADD/ADHD may intensify. It is not uncommon for teens with ADD/ADHD to forget assignments, misplace textbooks, and become easily bored with their daily class work. Teen may become inattentive, or excessively attentive, not waiting for their turn before blurting out answers. Teens with ADHD may also be fidgety and have a difficult time sitting still in class. The lack of attention to what they are doing often leads to poor performance, on tests and being rejected from sports teams, extracurricular activities, and peer groups. Teens with ADHD are more likely to be heavy alcoholic drinkers then teens without ADHD, and were more likely to abuse drugs and three times more likely to abuse drugs other then marijuana.
It is now known that the symptoms of ADHD persist into adulthood for about 70 percent of children with ADHD. This translates into 4 % of the US adult population, or 8 million adults. Adults with ADHD may have difficulty following directions, concentrating, remembering information, organizing tasks, or completing work within time limits. Chronic lateness, anxiety, low self esteem, impulsiveness, procrastination, low frustration tolerance, chronic boredom, mood swings, depression, relationship problems, employment problems, anger issues, and substance abuse or addiction problems. Adults with ADHD are more likely to have fewer occupational achievements, have a lower social economic status, have motor vehicle violations such as speeding, reckless driving, car accidents, and DUI’s. Adults with ADHD are more likely to smoke cigarettes, have marital problems
I have been diagnosed with ADD since the age of 6. My first grade teacher could not keep me in my seat and I was disruptive in class, and was labeled hyperactive. My parents were called into the school, and subsequently was taken to a child psychiatrist, who diagnosed me with Attention Deficit Disorder and Hyperactivity.
I was prescribed Ritalin and my first grade teacher was given the task of making sure I took my Ritalin during the day. Throughout the elementary school years I continued to see the child psychiatrist, who repeatedly assured my parents that I when the ADD would disappear when I became a teenager, so the medication was discontinued after 6th grade.
Prescribed Medications for ADD/ADHD
Adderall, Adderall XR, Concerta, Ritalin, Dexedrine, Focalin, Metadate CD and Metadate ER, and non- stimulants Strattera and Intuniv after a consult with the prescribing physician, without proper diagnosis protocols. I believe that the diagnosis is given hastily and without the proper protocols in many cases, and I also believe that alternative forms of treatment should be considered. I received this from my local pharmacy which includes this literature with every prescription of generic adderall. It appears to me that the lesser side effects are listed first, with the more serious coming later. Reading the fine print on the side effects of Adderall is a pretty frightening read.SIDE EFFECTS OF ADDERALL Loss of appetite, weight loss, dry mouth, stomach upset/pain, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, fever, nervousness, and trouble sleeping may occur. Mental/mood/behavioral changes, agitation, aggression, mood swings, depression, abnormal thoughts, uncontrolled movements, continuous chewing movements, teeth grinding, outbursts of words/sounds, change in sexual ability/desire, shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, severe headache, fast/pounding/irregular heartbeat, jaw/left arm pain, seizures, swelling of the ankles/feet, blurred vision, extreme tiredness, weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, confusion.
PRECAUTIONS FOR ADDERALL This drug is not recommended for children under 3. Caution is advised in using this medication with children because it may affect weight, growth rate, and final height. Infants born to mothers dependent on this medication may have birth defects, be born too soon, and have low birth weight. They may also have withdrawal symptoms.
OVERDOSE ON ADDERALL Symptoms of overdose may include: Severe mental/mood changes, seizures, severe or persistent headache, severe restlessness, fast breathing.
Alternative Forms of Treatment
Proper diet and exercise are enormously important in the quality of the individuals mental and physical health. High consumption of sugar leads to insulin spike which takes too much glucose from the blood causing hypoglycemia. Due to the hypoglycemic state that releases adrenaline, which causes the fight or flight energy surge. This agitation, irritability, and shakiness can be falsely labeled as ADHD. This can also be caused by not eating enough and not getting enough protein. A Yale study where adults and children were fed a comparable amount of sugar based on percentage of body weight measured blood adrenaline levels every half hour for five hours. Adrenaline levels in children were 10 times higher then normal up to five hours later. In a study on school lunches, lunches were changed from processed foods and sugars as well as eliminating BHT and BHA to fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and proteins in 803 public schools and 9 juvenile correctional facilities. After 4 years the academic performance in the schools rose 16 % and learning disabilities fell 40 % in the public schools. In the juvenile correction facilities violent and non-violent anti-social behavior fell 48%.Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are showing promise in helping combat ADHD. Neurofeedback has shown enormous promise with the treatment of ADHD. Chiropractic and ADHD study examined 9 adults, 4 women and 5 men diagnosed with ADHD were analyzed for attention using TOVA (Test of Variable Attention) tests. After 8 weeks of chiropractic care, those who work in the study group experienced a substantial improvement in their TOVA scores in addition to a normalizing of their ADHD symptoms. Sleep deprivation’s effects are cumulative and have a profound effect on memory, learning, reasoning, and ability to focus. Local patients prescribed generic-brand anti-ADHD drugs may have had a frustrating time finding a drug store stocked with their specific medication.
Shortages of generic anti-ADHD drugs have recently become common at local pharmacies. The Shelton Walgreens retailers located downtown and on Bridgeport Avenue, are out of Dextroamphetamine, the generic brand of Dexadrine, but some have other branded versions of similar drugs—such as Adderall and Ritalin—in stock, according to the pharmaceutical receptionists phoned.
Dextroamphetamine is notable for being one of the cheaper generic drugs, with a one-month supply of 30 5mg doses going for about $11, according to a Consumer Reports information sheet published in July 2010. A brand name of the substance, LiquidADD, costs seven times that amount for the same supply, according to Consumer Reports.
According to a recent New York Times article, the shortage of ADHD drugs—specifically, the generic brands—appears to be a result of the Drug Enforcement Administration approving specified amounts of the drugs (because they are classified as a controlled substance) to be manufactured. These quotas are given to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which then passes along the restrictions to big pharmacy manufacturers. However, these manufacturers, while limited in the total number of amphetamines they can actually produce, can decide which prescription brands they want to create. For instance, the article states that Novartis creates ”both the branded and generic versions of Ritalin” and the company has “ensured that supplies of branded drugs are adequate while allowing generic versions to go wanting.”
Ease of access can lead to over-prescription, abuse
The DEA may have reason to issue these quotas. Dr. Barry Kerner, Physician-in-Chief of Silver Hill Hospital, said that many people abuse amphetamines and can acquire those drugs easily.
“Few doctors administer psychological testing for ADHD” and few doctors call patients’ previous psychiatrists for verification, which can lead to a “made-up history” which a person can use to acquire amphetamine prescriptions for years, he said. Many doctors could prescribe these drugs to a patient who may have read about and then feigned having the symptoms needed for ADHD diagnoses, using that information to obtain a prescription, according to Kerner.
If the doctor tries to tell a person whom they suspect does not actually have ADHD, the doctor runs the risk of losing the patient and the patient may just go and find another doctor for their prescription.
“Once you’re diagnosed with that it travels with you. People are often too busy to spend the time finding what the right diagnosis is. When people say they’ve been on this [amphetamine] for three years, and I say you don’t have ADHD, people get angry, get up and leave and go on to the next doctor,” said Kerner.
“It’s extremely easy to get the prescription for stimulants,” said Kerner.
Adults are the main abusers
It’s not just college kids who use amphetamines as ‘study drugs,’ either.
“There’s a whole area abuse that goes unnoticed,” said Kerner. “Soccer moms, who have to get through their day while doing 600 chores to run—they’ve got kids, benefits to go to, tennis in the morning, they’re running around the whole day” and might use stimulants to get through it, either by obtaining it through their own doctor or even using their children’s anti-ADHD drug.
“Then they might take benzodiazepines to go to sleep at night” he said. Benzodiazepines are a ‘downer’ drug which would be used in this case to counter-affect amphetamines ‘upper’ qualities.
While Kerner acknowledged that adolescents do abuse the drugs, “Most of the abuse is taking place in adults,” he said. “I think one of the reasons why there’s a shortage is because it’s being over prescribed….ADHD doesn’t begin in adulthood.”
Kerner noted that Provigil, a brand named drug that cost $18.55 per pill in August 2010, is a popular drug on Wall Street.
“If you’re putting in 14-hour days, some people resort to taking a stimulant to getting through the day,” he said.
People who use pharmaceutical amphetamines habitually don’t experience physical withdrawal from the drug, but they are “habit forming and psychologically addictive” and in some cases patients may “crash, get depressed, get lackluster, and have no energy,” said Kerner.
Black market diversion and abuse
Perhaps because many people need to juggle multiple tasks and work harder to get ahead, or even just keep a job, the black market of amphetamines is thriving.
Kerner said there have been cases of people going to different psychiatrists in different states to obtain large quantities of the drug and sell them. He recalled reading about an instance where a person sold pills on Craigslist for profit. People sell them within their own social groups—a commonality in college—sometimes crush and snort the pills, and in rare instances melt the drug down and inject it, he said.
“We’ve had examples of abuse, people taking two, three, four times the amount as they’re supposed to take. We’ve had a kid with the correct [ADHD] diagnosis and abusing it,” said Kerner.
Dangers for patients without their medication
The Times article states that the Chief Executive of Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder believes “the drug shortages had become so acute that many patients were going untreated, increasing their risks of deadly traffic accidents and job dismissals.”
Kerner agreed, but only “for a small population of the people taking it. There are people who are truly ADD and ADHD, and these medications really help them,” he said. Amphetamines can also be prescribed for narcolepsy and occasionally used for some of its anti-depression effects.

This is grade A drug company BS I’ve been taking ADD meds for 20 years and I have never seen this. What they’ve done is manipulated the law to create an artificial shortage of Generic ADD drugs so they can line their pockets with brand name profits. What should happen is our (useless) congress should pass a law that says “If the generic is not available the the brand name has to be sold at the generics price.” See how long this ‘shortage’ lasts after that happens. But they would never do it because the drug companies line their political (and likely private) pocketbooks. Corruption at its finest. I think America is the only nation that you can get this drug prescribed., I was told about another product called AddieUP thats for sale in the US—- not as strong but works well with ADD etc., and needs no script or pharmacy to order

It’s about that time of year for Cision and Sarah Evans to unleash the list of the Top 100 Social Media and Internet Marketing blogs on you. But this year, we’ve changed it up a bit. We’ve included SEO blogs in our list since it is becoming an even stronger force in 2011!
Here’s a rundown of our measurement analysis. We chose four Web audience metrics: Average Unique Visitors per Month (available in CisionPoint), Average Page Views per Month per Unique Visitor, Average Time (seconds) per Month per Unique Visitor, and Average Visits per Month per Unique, all from Compete.com. Using Cision’s media database, I was able to find over 400 blogs covering social media, online marketing and search engines as a whole. From there, I drilled the entire list down to the blogs that primarily focused on social media, online marketing and SEO. Next, I ranked the blogs based on the four metrics provided by Compete. You can also quickly follow what this presitigous group is tweeting about through Cision’s Twitter list here. Here are the results.
Disclaimer: a question we’ve addressed often on this blog and in many of our free Cision Webinars, with all the metrics available for determining influence on the social Web, how can you determine which blogs really matter? Unfortunately there isn’t one metric that serves as a reliable indicator. As Jay noted in his original list, influence is subjective by nature and we’ve read a lot of great posts by bloggers who didn’t make the list. Some of them wield more influence in social media education endeavors outside of their blogs, such as conferences, Webinars, podcasts and white papers.
Since we included SEO blogs, our list has shifted quite a bit from last year, so some of the power rankings may seem extreme since there are so many new blogs to the list. Here’s a look:
UPDATE 4/15/11: Our original analysis accidentally overlooked 3 top 100 blogs, which have since been added to the list below. It was an accidental oversight on our part, and our apologies go out to Valeria Maltoni, Todd Defren and Matt Cutts… all amazing bloggers who should have been on the original list.

How do you know if you or someone you know may have ADD or ADHD?Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, has been in the news relentlessly as continued reports of Adderall and Ritalin shortages persist. Certainly there has been upward spike in ADHD diagnosis and an enormous increase in prescription medications given to both children and adults. The National Institute of Health (NIMH) estimates as of 2007 were that 5 million children, or about 5 % of all children, had ADHD. That number has increased another 6 % increase since then. Studies show that 70% of children with ADHD continue to have symptoms as adults.
A couple of key points should be considered. One is that normal childhood behaviors such as impulsiveness, boundless energy, aggressiveness, and moodiness are normal behaviors, and there has been an ever growing tendency to label these behaviors symptoms of ADD or ADHD. Since I am a father with a young son with boundless energy, I offer this simple common sense observation, “Boys will be boys."
My son can be mischievous, disruptive, hard to control, challenges authority, and has boundless energy There has been a ever increasing tendency to try to tag children with the ADD/ADHD diagnosis from educators who simply have a hard time keeping children in line. It borders on the criminal to give these normal children powerful amphetamines when educators, parents, and caregivers are simply overwhelmed and exasperated with the task of keeping children "in line". I am not speaking of brat behavior, disrespectful or rude behavior, or children who are obnoxious and disobedient. There is often a thin line between normal child behavior and behavior that crosses the line and tired, angry, impatient, or exasperated parenting can get in the way of how to properly control a child's behavior. Conversations with experienced teachers and parents have convinced me that ADD/ADHD medications have been given to children in record numbers with completely irresponsible and knee-jerk fashion to try to control children that are completely normal and have no business being medicated for simply being active and energetic.
To make a proper diagnosis for ADD and ADHD, the following protocols should must be followed.
1. The child or adult must undergo both a psychiatric and cardiac examination. Psychiatric conditions like depression, anxiety, psychosis, and suicide can be triggered by the use of the above medications. Cardiovascular problems and sudden death can also result from the usage of amphetamines like Adderall. It is irresponsible and reckless to prescribe these medications without these examinations being performed! Sadly, it is the exception and not the rule to do these examinations before prescribing these powerful drugs.
2. A diagnostic test needs to be given to properly evaluate the child or adult to make the proper diagnosis. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders by the American Psychiatric Association, DSM-IV test, provides an 18 symptom checklist for rendering the diagnosis of either ADD, ADHD, or combined type. Often a verbal exchange between the parents of the child and the doctor or the adult patient and doctor is done to make the diagnosis, instead of proper testing. Again, this is in my opinion, shooting from the hip and irresponsible.
3. Childhood ADD/ADHD is properly diagnosed after a child has shown six or more specific symptoms of inactivity and/or hyperactivity on a regular basis for more than six months in more than two settings. Symptoms must have been present before age 7, and symptoms must cause functional impairment in two or more settings, such as in the classroom and at home. Symptoms must not be attributable to any other psychological or physical disorder. The diagnosis of ADD/ADHD involves the gathering of information from several sources, including school, caregivers, and parents. A doctor must consider how a child's behavior compares with that of other children the same age.
The following is the generally accepted criteria for making a diagnosis for inattention (ADD)
1. Makes careless mistakes in work, schoolwork, or other activities. Frequent failure to give close attention to details.
2. Frequently does not listen or seem to listen when directly spoken to
3. Frequently loses necessary things for activities or tasks, such as books, tools, papers, assignments, objects such as pencils and pens
4. Avoids, doesn't like, or does not wish to do activities that require sustained mental effort, such as homework or schoolwork
5.Difficulty with organizing tasks or activities
6. Often have problems with paying attention to school or play activities
7. Failure to follow thru with instructions and finishing chores, schoolwork, tasks at work, not because of lack of understanding instructions or opposing the instructions
8. Outside stimuli easily distracts the individual9.Frequently forgetful in everyday activity
The nine for impulsiveness and hyperactivity:
1. Gets out of chair or seat in classroom or work when staying seated is required or expected
2. Often intrudes on others or interrupts, in conversations or activities
3. Talks too much
4. Can't wait for their turn
5.Has difficulty playing or engaging activities quietly
6. Is constantly on the go, revved up like a motor
7. Runs around, restless, climbs or moves about excessively in situations which are inappropriate
8. Blurts out answers before questions are completed9. Frequently squirms while seated and/or moves hands and feet
typically diagnosed in childhood, ADD and ADHD, still affects many teenagers. The symptoms, inattention, impulsivity, and hyperactivity are intrusive, and must seriously interfere with a teen's life. During teen years, especially as the hormonal changes of adolescence are occurring, symptoms of ADD/ADHD may intensify. It is not uncommon for teens with ADD/ADHD to forget assignments, misplace textbooks, and become easily bored with their daily class work. Teen may become inattentive, or excessively attentive, not waiting for their turn before blurting out answers. Teens with ADHD may also be fidgety and have a difficult time sitting still in class. The lack of attention to what they are doing often leads to poor performance, on tests and being rejected from sports teams, extracurricular activities, and peer groups. Teens with ADHD are more likely to be heavy alcoholic drinkers then teens without ADHD, and were more likely to abuse drugs and three times more likely to abuse drugs other then marijuana.
It is now known that the symptoms of ADHD persist into adulthood for about 70 percent of children with ADHD. This translates into 4 % of the US adult population, or 8 million adults. Adults with ADHD may have difficulty following directions, concentrating, remembering information, organizing tasks, or completing work within time limits. Chronic lateness, anxiety, low self esteem, impulsiveness, procrastination, low frustration tolerance, chronic boredom, mood swings, depression, relationship problems, employment problems, anger issues, and substance abuse or addiction problems. Adults with ADHD are more likely to have fewer occupational achievements, have a lower social economic status, have motor vehicle violations such as speeding, reckless driving, car accidents, and DUI's. Adults with ADHD are more likely to smoke cigarettes, have marital problems
I have been diagnosed with ADD since the age of 6. My first grade teacher could not keep me in my seat and I was disruptive in class, and was labeled hyperactive. My parents were called into the school, and subsequently was taken to a child psychiatrist, who diagnosed me with Attention Deficit Disorder and Hyperactivity.
I was prescribed Ritalin and my first grade teacher was given the task of making sure I took my Ritalin during the day. Throughout the elementary school years I continued to see the child psychiatrist, who repeatedly assured my parents that I when the ADD would disappear when I became a teenager, so the medication was discontinued after 6th grade.
Prescribed Medications for ADD/ADHD
Adderall, Adderall XR, Concerta, Ritalin, Dexedrine, Focalin, Metadate CD and Metadate ER, and non- stimulants Strattera and Intuniv after a consult with the prescribing physician, without proper diagnosis protocols. I believe that the diagnosis is given hastily and without the proper protocols in many cases, and I also believe that alternative forms of treatment should be considered. I received this from my local pharmacy which includes this literature with every prescription of generic adderall. It appears to me that the lesser side effects are listed first, with the more serious coming later. Reading the fine print on the side effects of Adderall is a pretty frightening read.SIDE EFFECTS OF ADDERALL Loss of appetite, weight loss, dry mouth, stomach upset/pain, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, fever, nervousness, and trouble sleeping may occur. Mental/mood/behavioral changes, agitation, aggression, mood swings, depression, abnormal thoughts, uncontrolled movements, continuous chewing movements, teeth grinding, outbursts of words/sounds, change in sexual ability/desire, shortness of breath, chest pain, fainting, severe headache, fast/pounding/irregular heartbeat, jaw/left arm pain, seizures, swelling of the ankles/feet, blurred vision, extreme tiredness, weakness on one side of the body, slurred speech, confusion.
PRECAUTIONS FOR ADDERALL This drug is not recommended for children under 3. Caution is advised in using this medication with children because it may affect weight, growth rate, and final height. Infants born to mothers dependent on this medication may have birth defects, be born too soon, and have low birth weight. They may also have withdrawal symptoms.
OVERDOSE ON ADDERALL Symptoms of overdose may include: Severe mental/mood changes, seizures, severe or persistent headache, severe restlessness, fast breathing.
Alternative Forms of Treatment
Proper diet and exercise are enormously important in the quality of the individuals mental and physical health. High consumption of sugar leads to insulin spike which takes too much glucose from the blood causing hypoglycemia. Due to the hypoglycemic state that releases adrenaline, which causes the fight or flight energy surge. This agitation, irritability, and shakiness can be falsely labeled as ADHD. This can also be caused by not eating enough and not getting enough protein. A Yale study where adults and children were fed a comparable amount of sugar based on percentage of body weight measured blood adrenaline levels every half hour for five hours. Adrenaline levels in children were 10 times higher then normal up to five hours later. In a study on school lunches, lunches were changed from processed foods and sugars as well as eliminating BHT and BHA to fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and proteins in 803 public schools and 9 juvenile correctional facilities. After 4 years the academic performance in the schools rose 16 % and learning disabilities fell 40 % in the public schools. In the juvenile correction facilities violent and non-violent anti-social behavior fell 48%.Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids are showing promise in helping combat ADHD. Neurofeedback has shown enormous promise with the treatment of ADHD. Chiropractic and ADHD study examined 9 adults, 4 women and 5 men diagnosed with ADHD were analyzed for attention using TOVA (Test of Variable Attention) tests. After 8 weeks of chiropractic care, those who work in the study group experienced a substantial improvement in their TOVA scores in addition to a normalizing of their ADHD symptoms. Local patients prescribed generic-brand anti-ADHD drugs may have had a frustrating time finding a drug store stocked with their specific medication.
Shortages of generic anti-ADHD drugs have recently become common at local pharmacies. The Shelton Walgreens retailers located downtown and on Bridgeport Avenue, are out of Dextroamphetamine, the generic brand of Dexadrine, but some have other branded versions of similar drugs—such as Adderall and Ritalin—in stock, according to the pharmaceutical receptionists phoned.
Dextroamphetamine is notable for being one of the cheaper generic drugs, with a one-month supply of 30 5mg doses going for about $11, according to a Consumer Reports information sheet published in July 2010. A brand name of the substance, LiquidADD, costs seven times that amount for the same supply, according to Consumer Reports.
According to a recent New York Times article, the shortage of ADHD drugs—specifically, the generic brands—appears to be a result of the Drug Enforcement Administration approving specified amounts of the drugs (because they are classified as a controlled substance) to be manufactured. These quotas are given to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which then passes along the restrictions to big pharmacy manufacturers. However, these manufacturers, while limited in the total number of amphetamines they can actually produce, can decide which prescription brands they want to create. For instance, the article states that Novartis creates ”both the branded and generic versions of Ritalin” and the company has “ensured that supplies of branded drugs are adequate while allowing generic versions to go wanting.”
Ease of access can lead to over-prescription, abuse
The DEA may have reason to issue these quotas. Dr. Barry Kerner, Physician-in-Chief of Silver Hill Hospital, said that many people abuse amphetamines and can acquire those drugs easily.
“Few doctors administer psychological testing for ADHD” and few doctors call patients’ previous psychiatrists for verification, which can lead to a “made-up history” which a person can use to acquire amphetamine prescriptions for years, he said. Many doctors could prescribe these drugs to a patient who may have read about and then feigned having the symptoms needed for ADHD diagnoses, using that information to obtain a prescription, according to Kerner.
If the doctor tries to tell a person whom they suspect does not actually have ADHD, the doctor runs the risk of losing the patient and the patient may just go and find another doctor for their prescription.
“Once you’re diagnosed with that it travels with you. People are often too busy to spend the time finding what the right diagnosis is. When people say they’ve been on this [amphetamine] for three years, and I say you don’t have ADHD, people get angry, get up and leave and go on to the next doctor,” said Kerner.
“It’s extremely easy to get the prescription for stimulants,” said Kerner.
Adults are the main abusers
It’s not just college kids who use amphetamines as ‘study drugs,’ either.
“There’s a whole area abuse that goes unnoticed,” said Kerner. “Soccer moms, who have to get through their day while doing 600 chores to run—they’ve got kids, benefits to go to, tennis in the morning, they’re running around the whole day” and might use stimulants to get through it, either by obtaining it through their own doctor or even using their children’s anti-ADHD drug.
“Then they might take benzodiazepines to go to sleep at night” he said. Benzodiazepines are a ‘downer’ drug which would be used in this case to counter-affect amphetamines ‘upper’ qualities.
While Kerner acknowledged that adolescents do abuse the drugs, “Most of the abuse is taking place in adults,” he said. “I think one of the reasons why there’s a shortage is because it’s being over prescribed....ADHD doesn’t begin in adulthood.”
Kerner noted that Provigil, a brand named drug that cost $18.55 per pill in August 2010, is a popular drug on Wall Street.
“If you’re putting in 14-hour days, some people resort to taking a stimulant to getting through the day,” he said.
People who use pharmaceutical amphetamines habitually don’t experience physical withdrawal from the drug, but they are “habit forming and psychologically addictive” and in some cases patients may “crash, get depressed, get lackluster, and have no energy,” said Kerner.
Black market diversion and abuse
Perhaps because many people need to juggle multiple tasks and work harder to get ahead, or even just keep a job, the black market of amphetamines is thriving.
Kerner said there have been cases of people going to different psychiatrists in different states to obtain large quantities of the drug and sell them. He recalled reading about an instance where a person sold pills on Craigslist for profit. People sell them within their own social groups—a commonality in college—sometimes crush and snort the pills, and in rare instances melt the drug down and inject it, he said.
“We’ve had examples of abuse, people taking two, three, four times the amount as they’re supposed to take. We’ve had a kid with the correct [ADHD] diagnosis and abusing it,” said Kerner.
Dangers for patients without their medication
The Times article states that the Chief Executive of Children and Adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder believes “the drug shortages had become so acute that many patients were going untreated, increasing their risks of deadly traffic accidents and job dismissals.”
Kerner agreed, but only “for a small population of the people taking it. There are people who are truly ADD and ADHD, and these medications really help them,” he said. Amphetamines can also be prescribed for narcolepsy and occasionally used for some of its anti-depression effects.

This is grade A drug company BS I've been taking ADD meds for 20 years and I have never seen this. What they've done is manipulated the law to create an artificial shortage of Generic ADD drugs so they can line their pockets with brand name profits. What should happen is our (useless) congress should pass a law that says "If the generic is not available the the brand name has to be sold at the generics price." See how long this 'shortage' lasts after that happens. But they would never do it because the drug companies line their political (and likely private) pocketbooks. Corruption at its finest. I think America is the only nation that you can get this drug prescribed., I was told about another product called AddieUP thats for sale in the US--- not as strong but works well with ADD etc., and needs no script or pharmacy to order

It’s about that time of year for Cision and Sarah Evans to unleash the list of the Top 100 Social Media and Internet Marketing blogs on you. But this year, we’ve changed it up a bit. We’ve included SEO blogs in our list since it is becoming an even stronger force in 2011!
Here’s a rundown of our measurement analysis. We chose four Web audience metrics: Average Unique Visitors per Month (available in CisionPoint), Average Page Views per Month per Unique Visitor, Average Time (seconds) per Month per Unique Visitor, and Average Visits per Month per Unique, all from Compete.com. Using Cision’s media database, I was able to find over 400 blogs covering social media, online marketing and search engines as a whole. From there, I drilled the entire list down to the blogs that primarily focused on social media, online marketing and SEO. Next, I ranked the blogs based on the four metrics provided by Compete. You can also quickly follow what this presitigous group is tweeting about through Cision’s Twitter list here. Here are the results.
Disclaimer: a question we’ve addressed often on this blog and in many of our free Cision Webinars, with all the metrics available for determining influence on the social Web, how can you determine which blogs really matter? Unfortunately there isn’t one metric that serves as a reliable indicator. As Jay noted in his original list, influence is subjective by nature and we’ve read a lot of great posts by bloggers who didn’t make the list. Some of them wield more influence in social media education endeavors outside of their blogs, such as conferences, Webinars, podcasts and white papers.
Since we included SEO blogs, our list has shifted quite a bit from last year, so some of the power rankings may seem extreme since there are so many new blogs to the list. Here’s a look:
UPDATE 4/15/11: Our original analysis accidentally overlooked 3 top 100 blogs, which have since been added to the list below. It was an accidental oversight on our part, and our apologies go out to Valeria Maltoni, Todd Defren and Matt Cutts… all amazing bloggers who should have been on the original list.

Baker was interviewed on the local Fox Television affiliate’s, Good Day Atlanta program. Baker also received considerable regional press and local government support. Easyriders Events Annual Bike Show Tour wrapped up its fall tour in Atlanta, GA., on November 20th with host Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. The all new entertainment-packed bike show tour also stopped in Louisville, KY on November 13th and in Greenville, SC., on October 23rd at the Carolina First Center 1. Record numbers of bike enthusiasts and motorcycle fans came out to each of the three cities to see a record high 250 plus custom bikes competing for over 55 plus awards. Easyriders Events Marketing and Entertainment Director, Tucker Kroll attributes the record breaking number of custom bike entries this year to their free space program, which gives wristband holders an option to feature their custom bikes at the show for no charge.

Easyriders Events Annual Bike Show Tour wrapped up its fall tour in Atlanta, GA., on November 20th with host Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top. The all new entertainment-packed bike show tour also stopped in Louisville, KY on November 13th and in Greenville, SC., on October 23rd at the Carolina First Center 1. Record numbers of bike enthusiasts and motorcycle fans came out to each of the three cities to see a record high 250 plus custom bikes competing for over 55 plus awards. Easyriders Events Marketing and Entertainment Director, Tucker Kroll attributes the record breaking number of custom bike entries this year to their free space program, which gives wristband holders an option to feature their custom bikes at the show for no charge.
