“The problem, though, is what follows “What about…” questions. The next step from almost any discussion like this one is to conduct further research. And, “What about…” questions never stop…Even if you do analyze your questions, frequently the analytical work, no matter how robust, proves wrong because of something that can’t be anticipated. To borrow a phrase from the great military strategist Helmuth von Moltke: “No business plan ever survived its first encounter with the market.”…So what’s the alternative? Substitute early action for never-ending analysis. Figure out the quickest, cheapest way to do something market-facing to start the iterative process that so frequently typifies innovation. Be prepared to make quick decisions, but have the driver of the decision be in-market data, not conceptual analysis. In other words, go small and learn.”

Why Craigslist Is Such a Mess
Should craigslist ever be sold, the price likely would run into the billions. Newmark, by these lights, is a very rich man. When anybody reminds him of this, the craigslist founder says there is nothing he would care to do with that much money, should it ever come into his hands. He already has a parking space, a hummingbird feeder, a small home with a view, and a shower with strong water pressure. What else is he supposed to want?
…
Newmark’s claim of almost total disinterest in wealth dovetails with the way craigslist does business. Besides offering nearly all of its features for free, it scorns advertising, refuses investment, ignores design, and does not innovate. Ordinarily, a company that showed such complete disdain for the normal rules of business would be vulnerable to competition, but craigslist has no serious rivals. The glory of the site is its size and its price. But seen from another angle, craigslist is one of the strangest monopolies in history, where customers are locked in by fees set at zero and where the ambiance of neglect is not a way to extract more profit but the expression of a worldview.
…
Craigslist gets more traffic than either eBay or Amazon.com. eBay has more than 16,000 employees. Amazon has more than 20,000. Craigslist has 30.
I want to quote half the article but I think you should just read the whole thing.

“The Flyfire canvas can transform itself from one shape to another or morph a two-dimensional photographic image into an articulated shape. The pixels are physically engaged in transitioning images from one state to another, which allows the Flyfire canvas to demonstrate a spatially animated viewing experience.”

“If you watched the Super Bowl this evening you’ll have seen a video from Google called “Parisian Love”. In fact you might have watched it before, because it’s been on YouTube for over three months. We didn’t set out to do a Super Bowl ad, or even a TV ad for search. Our goal was simply to create a series of short online videos about our products and our users, and how they interact. But we liked this video so much, and it’s had such a positive reaction on YouTube, that we decided to share it with a wider audience.”
Well done.

The Human Shuffle: Is ChatRoulette the future of the Internet or its distant past?
Tyler Cowen:
The first time I entered ChatRoulette—a new website that brings you face-to-face, via webcam, with an endless stream of random strangers all over the world—I was primed for a full-on Walt Whitman experience: an ecstatic surrender to the miraculous variety and abundance of humankind.
That’s the premise, the actual story is at this link. Here is one excerpt:
The first eighteen people who saw me disconnected immediately.

“All i ask is one thing, and I’m asking this particularly of young people that watch. Please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism, for the record, it’s my least favorite quality. It doesn’t lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard, and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.”

our Zeitgeist is up! I’m especially thrilled with the Artists section, where each band is illustrated by a different incredible artist. to my genuine adolescent excitement, nearly everyone I asked said yes, and then, once the pieces started coming in…oh. I couldn’t sleep for weeks. incredibly, we pulled this all together in under a month, during the holidays—and some of these are oil paintings! click around the artists’ websites and explore more of their stuff. I am so, so happy.
Amazing touch!

My Band Without a Name featuring Gino, Adam, Krista and Me. Bon Iver - Blood Bank — Live remix instrumental style. We were fooling around with this yesterday. I used my MPC to sample a piece of Bon Iver, put some electro beats behind it, and then we played live over that shiza. Shitty recording, totally unfinished track, fooling around, but pretty fun. Gino = bass, Adam = guitar, Krista = keys, Chet = drums.89 plays

When I was an oh so innocent 13 year old, I played drums in a band made up of seniors in high school, and the first song we learned was a cover of “Beat on the Brat” by the Ramones. For some reason I’ve been thinking about this a bit recently. Here’s a Sonic Youth version of the song.21 plays
