I saw Page One: Inside the New York Times last night with my good friend and journalist and educator Robin Phillips.

What did I think about it? I pretty much agree with Robin’s review

Interestingly, the guy sitting to my left was wearing a Times t-shirt. He said he was a pressman who took a buyout from the newspaper a few years back and moved to Arizona. Sadly, I didn’t get the chance to ask him what he thought of the movie.

How to create a timelapse photo record of your day

Interesting stuff from Matt Brian:

The smartphone camera has all but replaced the point-and-shoot; it’s portable, it (in some cases) has a decent battery life and it allows you to share your photos with your friends via various social networks.

Lifelapse for iPhone is a new application that wants to take the hassle out of documenting your day in pictures by allowing you to snap images using your iPhone’s camera at thirty-second intervals.

If your phone is in your pocket, taking a photos automatically would be wasteful. With that in mind, Lifelapse will launch with what is called a “LifePouch” a small pouch that is worn around the neck and will safely and securely hold your iPhone as you go about your day and help you capture what is going on around you.

When you start Lifelapse, the app will ask you to start recording – much like a video – but will take a still image every thirty seconds, creating a timelapse project.

Daily chart: two thousand years in one chart. Measured in years lived, the present century, which is only ten-years old, is already “longer” than the whole of the 17th century. That is a lot of history for a single decade.

The Web Is Shrinking. Now What?

When you exclude just Facebook from the rest of the Web, consumption in terms of minutes of use shrank by nearly nine percent between March 2010 and March 2011, according to data from comScore. And, even when you include Facebook usage, total non-mobile Internet consumption still dropped three percent over the same period.

We’ve known that social is growing lightning fast — notably, Facebook consumption, which grew by 69 percent — but now it’s clear that Facebook is not growing in addition to the Web. Rather, it’s actually taking consumption away from the publishers who compete on the rest of the Web.

Ye olde Arizona photos.

We now live in a world where the mayor of New York (or more likely, his intern) checks into a Foursquare meme and cross-posts it to Twitter.

Fun fact: There are nearly 80,000 mayors ousted every day. Foursquare has released a fascinating infographic of growth over time at: https://foursquare.com/10million

motherjones:

Productivity has surged, but income and wages have stagnated for most Americans. If the median household income had kept pace with the economy since 1970, it would now be nearly $92,000, not $50,000.

Dropbox Reader is yet another reason for Dropbox subscribers to be more responsible about how they interact with the cloud service.

Before the ToS change, the service boasted: “Dropbox employees are unable to view user files.” Now, not only are the files viewable, but with Dropbox Reader, the very fundamental elements of the account are penetrable.

Social media experience

In 2009, azcentral.com offered me the opportunity to become its first social media editor. I jumped at the chance and set out to:
  • Develop organizational standards, including social media guidelines
  • Train staff across the organization to receive maximum benefit from social media
  • Develop an authentic and engaging voice across all social platforms that represents our core mission
  • Engage with as many readers as possible, as quickly as possible
  • Determine best ways to measure social media and search engine optimization ROI
  • Grow our Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare audience
  • Effectively use all social media platforms to promote our content
  • Ensure our journalism reaches as many people as possible through an effective search engine optimization strategy
  • Continually test and develop new partnerships around the latest social media technologies, including Storify, gaming integration, Facebook and Twitter contesting and live-blogging platforms
Today, many consumers of our brand use social media to get their news -- and help us craft the news. They pass along tips and share pictures and video. They provide instant feedback on coverage and debate the issues of the day. More and more reporters and editors are using social media as a tool to enhance news coverage.

As Senior Editor, Mobile/Search/Social, I now manage a team of social media producers who continue to build azcentral's connections, conversation and collaboration with readers and viewers.

I'm helping create mobile products and the standards, systems, presentation and publishing processes for azcentral.com and KPNX-TV. I'm also helping develop ways that azcentral.com can effectively reach SMS and email subscribers and growing those audiences.
