There’s a sense of imperviousness that is affixed to our existence. Sometimes it’s there and sometimes it’s not, like when you’re on a roadtrip or when you get to see somewhere so magnificent the hairs on the back of your head perk up - you’re alive and this place is beautiful. Congratulations, you’ve made it somewhere great.
Glad to get that out of the way. Now I can get back to sweating the small stuff.
At least once in your life, when you need to reset, pick a handful of places 4 to 8 hours away in every direction. Put them in a hat, get in the car, pull a name, and drive there. No questions asked.
Everything about you,
my life, is both
make-believe and real.
We are like a couple
working the night shift
in a bomb factory.
Come quietly, one says
to the other
as he takes her by the hand
and leads her
to a rooftop
overlooking the city.
At this hour, if one listens
long and hard,
one can hear a fire engine
in the distance,
but not the cries for help,
just the silence
growing deeper
at the sight of a small child
leaping out of a window
with its nightclothes on fire.

It’s about misunderstandings between people and places, being disconnected and looking for moments of connection. There are so many moments in life when people don’t say what they mean, when they are just missing each other, waiting to run into each other in a hallway.
