This controversy in South Africa is interesting. I have used Yodlee's service and also other similar ones like Perfios. For some reason, I have been comfortable using it & did not really panic.

Yes Bank I think has a similar service (probably powered by Yodlee). Post Mint acquisition, Intuit also launched the 'Money Manager' product through banks like ICICI. I do not think all of them have a secure API based access, there would be screen scrapping involved, me thinks.

I feel Indian banks / RBI should take a view on this.

I was supposed to speak at the CSI event in Ahmedabad earlier this month. Due to a freak delay in flight departure from Bangalore, I did not reach Ahmedabad at all - went till Mumbai & came back. :-)

Nevertheless, here is the speech I had prepared for that:

Let us now move into the topic "Mobile Applications for India - Are we living up to the potential". First, a quick take on how mobile apps are faring in India right now. There are scores of application stores, with stores of handset vendors like Nokia, Samsung, stores of platforms like Android, iOS, Windows Phone, stores of mobile operators like Airtel, Vodafone, Idea, Aircel and also some independent stores like Getjar, Opera etc. There are also niche attempts by Indian start-ups like Onward Mobility, AppBazar etc that have seen some mind share from developers.

There have been several Indian applications: NewsHunt, TukTuk Meter, TaazzaGo, Zomato, CardsCreator, Sparsh etc. Apart from the app companies, there have been other successful companies around mobile ecosystem: mChek in payments, InMobi on mobile advertising, Infosys has its own platform called Flypp offered as a white labelled app store.

On the downloads front, we have great statistics from everyone. Airtel claimed 2.5 million downloads right in the first month. For Nokia, India is the top download center for Ovi Store, India is an important market for Android and Windows Phone too. Getjars and Operas thrive on the downloads from India. Our own application store at Vodafone, live for the past couple of weeks has seen tremendous numbers.

In summary, we are doing wonderful. You don't want to clap?

Everything is hunky dory, right? We are the next super power in the world. Silicon Valley, move on! India has taken over. Is that so? Is this all we can do? Come on!! Without taking away the successes we have had, let us look into this more deeply.

First, some numbers: Indian population: 1.21 billion, Mobile Subscribers: 800+ million, Handset distribution: Close to 10% smartphones, 70% Java enabled phones. More than 100 million data users. Forget the accuracy of these numbers. They are huge, aren't they? Now, is everyone using an 'App'? Barring a handful, how many pure Indian Apps are there? A slightly deeper look into this question will show why we are nowhere near our potential.

To understand the potential, let us now think about what an app itself is. What is an app? Angry Birds, right? Like the joke goes, our smartphones now have the same computing power that NASA's super computers had in the 1960s. However, NASA put a man on the moon and we put birds on pigs. Jokes apart, if you look at it, an app is an "encapsulation of an experience". It could be reading, listening, transacting, playing etc. You get the point? Newshunt is an encapsulation of the experience of news reading - on a mobile phone,  Mundu Radio is an encapsulation of the experience of listening to FM Radio - on a mobile phone, NGPay is an encapsulation of the experience of booking railway ticket - on a mobile phone, Angry Birds is the encapsulation of the experience of playing slingshot - on a mobile phone. So, who are the competitors to mobile apps now? It is the thing that the consumer now uses - For NewsHunt, it is the newspaper, for NGPay, it is the IRCTC website or the counter at railway stations and so on. Do you follow me?

Now, have we reached a stage where every possible encapsulation of experiences into a mobile phone has happened for the Indian consumer?

The simple answer is, NO!

With so much of potential in this space, let us look at some of the issues in creating mobile apps for India.

Not enough local content is available. For example, if you want to build an app to track the traffic pattern in Ahmedabad, there is no ready data / APIs available for one to use. If one wishes to create a mandi price app for rural India, the area is so fragmented that unless one starts building a network of agents, it is impossible to do. And so on.

There is minimal Indian language support in the handsets. Of course, there are phones with Indian language support, both display & input. But frankly, doesn’t the user experience on all of them suck? Which is why we have Panini & Sparsh keypads out in the market, right? Don't get me wrong, I know Nokias & Samsungs are doing their best but it is still not good enough.

Data penetration is low. Of course, the operators are trying their best and there is growth but the penetration is still low. It is actually a chicken and egg story. Data penetration will increase only with killer apps and killer apps would come only with data penetration.

Device/Platform fragmentation has been a huge issue. There are more than 90 handset brands. Even among the feature phones, there are so many versions of Java running on them that it is close to impossible to build a Java app that would run on all of them.

Next is monetization. With very low credit card penetration in the country, most people are dependent on the operators for billing. And they behave pricey. We operators have started changing now but it is going to be a while before significant changes come in.

Finally, to marketing and distribution. It is one thing to be on all stores but effectively, unless you break into the top league, you are not going to see significant downloads. And you need deep pockets for other kinds of advertising.!

So there are several issues like these. And we can keep whining about them. But that is not going to help anyone! As Woody Allen said, "The only person standing between me and greatness is - ME." It is like saying, if only I were born in the Silicon Valley, I would have been Steve Jobs. You might remember a dialogue from the movie Social Network: Zuckerburg says to the Winklewoss twins: If you had invented Facebook, you would have invented Facebook. Likewise, if I were Steve Jobs, I would have been Steve Jobs. Not whining about stuff. Don't get me wrong. This is not to demean anyone, just a fact of life. Issues would exist but we just need to find ways to overcome them. I know it is easy to preach but then that is what I am here for!

What I want to talk to you next about is the kind of opportunities that exist in this space with all those issues?

First of all, you need to decide - What business are you in? Building an App? Building a bunch of apps in a category (say games)? Build apps for someone else - that is pure services? Or into one of the associated business that come with apps stores. I will now list down some areas that I have noticed beyond just building apps for oneself or for others. Some of them could interest you!

Application Stores, for distributing others apps - Well, this is a big boys' game right now but there are indeed attempts by companies like Onward Mobility to build their own apps stores.

Analytics on apps stores - So many developers do not have internal analytics for their apps. Why don’t you build one? There are companies like Distimo/Flurry in this space but no one in India. Apart from analytics to developers, you can also sell research reports based on analytics to apps store providers. I can tell you that I desperately need it to get to know about Indian apps but there is no clear report available right now - I can be your first customer.

Recommendations - With apps stores getting crowded, discovery of apps is huge pain point for users and in turn even developers. Can you build a neat, personalized recommendation mechanism specifically for Indian users?

Cross Platform tools - Right now, developers are struggling to get their apps built & tested for multiple platforms/models. Can you build a service that makes it easy? There are so many HTML5 based cross platform tools out there - but one for India, supporting all Indian languages & that comes with a Siri like service for Gujrati would be wonderful.

DIY tools for app creation - In the late 90s, every brand, big & small, wanted a 'web presence'. Likewise, very soon, every brand would want an 'app presence'. Imagine your dentist having an app, your favorite restaurant having one, your hairstylist having one and so on. Would you not be thrilled? But can these guys now afford the insane amounts charged for mobile app development by the services companies? No. But what if they have a do it yourself tool to create one for their needs? There have been attempts by Google, Nokia & some third parties towards this but none as close to having your favorite sweets ordered from the "Bikanerwala app" on your phone. There is a huge scope here.

Enterprise Mobility - This is an area of huge growth and the speaker after me is going to explain it better. I would like to urge you to not think of Enterprise mobility as something for large enterprises alone. In the consumer segment, to a lot of Indians, their first experience of internet is through a mobile. Similarly, to a lot of small enterprises in India, their first experience of an ERP is going to be through a mobile.

Remember, I have not even mentioned the scope in the areas of building a business with an app as its basic interface here. That is an ocean. Just get out of this building (once my talk is over) and see for yourself the amount of opportunities that exist. Encapsulate every experience of an Indian into an app. Let Apple's statement of 'There is an App for that' be true to every experience of an Indian.

Well, you know what; this list is bound to be incomplete, even wrong in some areas. That is because; we have only scratched the surface here. And these come from me - an armchair critic, if you will, sitting in a large organization & preaching to others. If you get on the field and attempt to come out with solutions, there will be 1000s of problems that are waiting to be solved. By you, right now, right outside this campus!!

Finally, a quote from Steve Jobs! It is customary to mention Steve Jobs in such presentations and have his quote. I do not want to be left out. Jokes apart, he says

"When you start looking at a problem, it seems really simple—because you don’t understand its complexity. And your solutions are way too oversimplified, and they don’t work. Then you get into the problem and you see it’s really complicated. And you come up with all these convoluted solutions. That’s where most people stop, and the solutions tend to work for a while. But the really great person will keep going and find the key underlying principle of the problem and sort of come full circle with a beautiful, elegant solution that works.”

In terms of mobile apps for India, I think we are in the stage where our solutions are still oversimplified ones. Soon, we will realize that they do not work. And then come up with convoluted solutions. And then some of us will keep going and find the underlying problem and come up with an elegant solution. I would like to believe we have one of them in our audience today!

Cracks appear in Unique Identification Authority of India's enrolment process

Like I said before, I see quite a few issues in the process. There was some anecdotal evidence too I got recently: A friend of mine who lives in Bangalore managed to get UID in Mysore by showing address proof of his father's house there. Now, can Passport / SIM be issued to him just based on this? More fearful is the fact that his wife got her UID by just "saying" she was his wife it seems - no documents needed at all. Atrocious!

I hope these were just teething issues and things do get resolved. But the hope is reducing by the day.

BTW, here is the UID form being given in Pondicherry (picked it up there from my folks).

Samsung and Google are planning to develop a Hindi version of Android operating system.

Hindi version of Android?

If this is true, this is probably the greatest positive thing that can happen to the mobile ecosystem in India. This is one area that even Microsoft has not tread. I used to longingly look at Korean / Chinese / Japanese versions of Windows and wonder when such things would be possible in India - Imagine how the PC adoption rate would increase with that. Microsoft did attempt something with XP & Vista but the results were disastrous.

With all the hype about mobile-first internet market & so on, Android being available in Hindi (& other Indian languages) would be God-send. BG Mahesh would be the happiest man in this - he has been struggling with such issues for over a decade.

With all the challenges with fonts & input mechanisms for Indian languages, it requires an organization like Google to really take the lead. Hope they really do.

My contacts in Samsung India are not even aware of this and I guess this is more likely to remain a rumour, though I sincerely hope it does not.

I have been following the UID space on & off. With several people opposing it off late & comparing it with the now-defunct sytem in UK, I have decided to study it a bit more. Whatever thoughts I have around it, I shall put them as posts. They would mostly be random ramblings & not any structured document. Bear with me.

Demographic Data - Big Brother

One of the biggest concerns raised is about the Government misusing the demographic data collected (like for example, using this data to target & harm all Muslims in Gujarat, all Tamilians in Bangalore etc). The demographic details that are being collected are: Name, DOB, Gender, Address, Email ID & Phone Number. No religion/caste/mother-tongue details are collected - but critics could argue that certain things can be found out just using the name. Well, point taken.

Demographic Data - Other Concerns

By going through some of the documents in the UIDAI site, some concerns I get around demographic data being collected are more than this big-brother-targeting business. I am afraid it might just not be effective and what the UIDAI intends to achieve might get diluted. Let me explain.

3rd Party Enrolment & Random Audit

Third party registrars do the enrolment on behalf of UIDAI. We know the skill & expertise level of the entry level people in places like LIC. When they collect the details from a resident & verify it, I am afraid there is bound to be a lot of issues. I feel one can easily fool them about the address details & show fake passports / bank passbooks etc to convince them. So, potentially a person can get his UID with correct biometrics but incorrect demographic information. Not to mention of malpractice that may happen within the enrolment agency itself by some unscrupulous employees.

UIDAI claims to do 'random verification' of the information during its audit. Random? Are you kidding? As a potential user of UID based authentication in the future, how can passport office trust this data without going through physical verification through the police station?

Further, post enrolment, UID would send a "letter" to the resident to the address they have provided with their UID number, demographic & biometric details in them. It is not necessary for the person to be there to collect it - anyone can collect. Just the address should be existing. Further chances of misuse.

Sending biometric info in a letter

More scary is that fact that the biometric info would also be sent across with the letter. Why at all? What if a postman collects all those details and stores those biometric information for his future use. And sells it to people who want to misuse the system through fake gloves with these info etc. I know I am thinking like a C-grade masala movie writer but the point I wish to make is, it can be misused.

Other Concerns

Then there is this concept of "Introducer" - Since the primary target of UID, the urban poor, might not have address proofs with them, someone with an address proof can "introduce" them (similar to opening a bank account). There can be a lot of fraud happening with this too.

There were further bombshells like 'updating information' : "If a service provider authenticating or enrolling a resident finds, through its KYR process that the information provided by the resident (address, name, etc.) does not match with the UID record, or that the biometrics need to be renewed, it can ask the resident to update their information in the UID database." So the fictitious resident of ours can enrol with one address (by giving some fake proof), avail of some benefit, go to another service provider, claim the information is wrong and update it there with another address, to claim one more benefit and so on.

In short, I wish to say that the demographic information captured (particularly the address) cannot be fool-proof. A sensitive & important thing like passport issuance cannot happen trusting this. Probably SIM card sales can use it [actually it is dangerous if terrorists / non-state actors(!) start using it] for address verification - operators anyway do not like KYC much. Not really for sensitive cases.

There were a few fraud scenarios too mentioned but IMHO, they are very very few. I hope a lot more fraud scenarios have been considered too and just not documented.

Just as ID proof

Instead of dealing with demographics, if it can just be an ID proof, would it not be fool-proof ? One can argue it already has ID proof and places like passport office can use only that part. Point taken, but by removing demographics from it, the critics who argue about big-brother-targeting can also be shut up.

For ID proof, all that is needed is biometric info (with photograph if at all). Not even name. Your UID number is your username and your fingerprints are your password. That is all. Thinks like NREGS can immensely benefit with just this, I believe. [Though, in places like PDS, one can get ration cards in multiple states with the same UID since the PDS systems of the states would most likely be not linked. Even with address info, as I said before, I can get it done but it is a bit more difficult, that is all]

This report focuses on India this month. Statistics are usual but some insights are interesting!

In most countries, the top two spaces in most popular sites to visit are occupied by social networks and search. However, in India shopping and classifieds take a solid second place for favorite sites to visit after social network sites, well ahead of search, as combined site visit data from AdMarvel shows.

That is a bit surprising. Google anyways is the top site but still Search is not the top category!

we see how India stands tall as a country in rapid development, with internet-based knowledge at the forefront of that growth.

Cough! Cough! I wonder how filestube, zedge, songs.pk etc contribute to our "knowledge" growth!! Cough! Cough! We are probably still an entertainment-starved or entertainment-addicted country. :-)

And finally, top-10 devices are all Nokia, once again. Last month, one Micromax device made its appearance. And there were blog posts & mail chains about it. No one will notice now I guess :-) After all, we all like to poke the big guys!

Aadhaar: Enrollment, Authentication & Beyond - MediaNama

Good that very minimum demographic information is being collected. There was always a fear of people getting "targeted" based on their caste / language etc if made available in the wrong hands. But I wonder how this will be used in cases like caste based reservations, income based subsidies etc. Probably there should be another database of that with the UIDs mapped!!

Who are making those devices for enrolment by the way?

• Some music related stories: Uninor launches music store, Nokia launches shorties and it is offering new Kannada songs before movie releases. Good to see some localization around its services
• A Chennai based company has launched celeb management via mobiles. Namitha happens to be their first celebrity. Ha!
• CDMA seems to be doing good in the data card segment – 0.25 million collections in a month is not bad. No?

A big round of applause to Star TV, whose AsliHD campaign just proved that an advertisement featuring Karan Johar can be one of the best of a series. Not a trivial feat to achieve.

Seriously, what's with the other ads ? Two Indian dudes in an old beatup car travelling across what looks like the Wild West, explaining to each other the benefits of HD ? The car, the drive, the unnecessary over-acting and histrionics in all the current ad spots just dilute the message.

Sure, the value proposition intended to be communicate is commendable, and unique in the Indian scenario at this point. But the execution of the campaign is way off mark. There are much better ways to have messaged this - one off-the-cuff situation being a geek and non-geek combo, in a home setting.

Pop Quiz : How many times does KJo nod his head in the ad ?

On a lazy Saturday afternoon a few months ago, there was a salesman-type person at my front door. Only, he was not a salesman but a person who wanted me to fill in some product survey questionnaire. He had been hired by one of the top Research companies in India.

He had a sheaf of papers, and rapidly asked questions about local eateries, fast food joints, frequency of eating out etc. Funny thing is,

* For some of the demographic data and details, he continued filling the forms without waiting for an answer
* Got me to mention on the form, that the interview took 20 minutes (while he had completed it in 5 :)
* Got a couple of other surveys, done in 2 minutes, and stated as 15-20 minutes each. (He probably just filled it out himself, and needed some name/address to show to his boss).

This is the kind of primary data that is collected by the most prestigious marketing research firms. Which are used by Brand managers, Product managers, marketing teams to devise their product portfolio and brand strategies - getting these right with the correct data itself is a herculean task; no wonder things go haywire when the state of the data collection is like the above.

Here's a good example of creativity in finding a niche market segment for a product/service !

We all know that Matrimonial sites are a dime a dozen, and are one of the key areas which have benefited with the prevalence of internet. Go to any cybercafe, and you generally find a boy/girl, sometimes with parents, engrossed in a serious search for their better half.

There have been attempts at innovation in providing services, with segmentation based on caste or location (specific matrimony sites catering to a specific demographic). However, the latest one I came across is a novel attempt at differentiating itself:



Named "OverweightShaadi.com", this one's for people who are looking for "full figure" spouses. This is a good way to ease the search, given that however much we say that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder (and is not skin deep), our society compels us to think otherwise.

Their website's byline ("For the Large Hearted") is weird, given that they are targeting not the heart, but the head (and physical appearances). At best, it is a failed attempt at being sensitive.

Size does matter, after all :)

I really feel F&L and Samsung should take joint efforts towards this – Imagine an ad like this: You have the audition for the next model hunt in the next 4 weeks – but to qualify for the audition you got to send your photo right away! What to do!!

Buy a Samsung camera, take a picture with ‘beauty shot ON’ mode and send it. And yeah, use the F&L you got free  with the camera for the next 4 weeks and you are ready! Cool, huh?

I cannot also understand the social implications of this ‘beauty shot ON’ thingie! Imagine you search for your wife-to-be at your favorite matrimony portal and she has uploaded a ‘beauty shot ON’ photo there. You shortlist and go visit her at your favorite coffee shop to see the left side? Not funny, eh?

The Great India Retail Rush has led to the transformation of shopping centers and malls from a shopping place to a recreational area. People are expected - no, encouraged to come with their families, kids, and hang around (and if interested, buy a few things).

I was at one of these big malls which span across multiple floors, and has a huge floor devoted to :

• Household decor items
• Kids / infant clothes
• Toys

Why do many advertisers not care about ‘properly’ localizing their ads? They make an ad in Hindi and just plainly dub it for different regions. I suspect most of the dubbing also happens in Mumbai/Delhi. One can clearly see the difference in execution, the models that appear and the language spoken (accent, choice of words etc) between ads made for a regional market separately and one that is dubbed. There is no care taken to have 'neutral' models also - that is, why do not look atypical of any one region.

Some people really mess it up with localization. An example is the insurance company Aegon Religare. In Hindi, they had their teaser as KILB (Kam Insurance Lene ki Bimari - A disease that causes you buy less insurance). Nice creative stuff. The same ad in Tamil said KIVV (Kammi Insurance naala varra vyaadi - A disease that occurs because of less insurance). Do you see the difference in the meaning between the two? Or have I understood it wrong? I have not seen it in Kannada, Telugu etc and I suspect they may have their own meanings also. To top it all, they ran a teaser for about a week in national (cricket) and regional channels. I saw the Tamil one first and was discussing with a friend about what KIVV could be. He said it was KILB and not KIVV. I was confused. I then see a cricket match and find it as KILB. It took a while for me to understand that both KILB and KIVV are correct. The biggest fun was when a Tamil friend opined that this will be an ad for using condoms. He likened KIVV to HIV. :-) That said, the new ones (again featuring Irfan Khan) on local bus tickets costing 150 bucks has been done well in Tamil also.

The examples for bad localization are plenty. There was this HDFC ad with a father saving for his daughter's higher education thereby not having to ‘jhukaa’ his ‘sar’. In tamil, his ‘thalai’ has ever ‘thazhdhadhillai’. Good emotional stuff. Good translation also. End of it, they want the consumer to send an SMS as PAPA to some short code. Why can't it be APPA in Tamil? It is just addition of one more keyword to the short code, no? In Tamil, PAPA means something else. (Hey nothing nasty. It just means, 'kid') The recent ad of Tata Sky (featuring Aamir Khan as a Sardar & Sardarini) also might not have resonated well with South Indians. Thinking of set top boxes, Dish TV has this tag line, Dish Karo Wish Karo thing and the same thing is told in Tamil. How can a Tamilian understand Dish Karo Wish Karo? When this is put up with the high decibel campaign of Sun Direct (with the gorgeous Tamanna dancing around), will Dish stand a chance to grab the customer's attention? Sun Direct, when they launched nationally, have taken care to have localization done well - the one featuring the models who first came in Bajaj Discover ads.

There are a few advertisers who take enough care in localizing. Companies like Airtel go to a great length to do this - they have separate brand ambassadors too - Shah Rukh in Hindi and Madhavan in Tamil. Even the ad where a grandfather and grandson play chess over mobile was customized to different regions - with the grand mothers being different, wearing different stuff. The latest one with a kid calling his father has been translated well too. If I noticed well, they might have shot separately for Tamil because in close-up shots, I felt the kid was actually talking in Tamil. The Nokia ads have also been customized well enough. In most of their ads, they do not have much content to change but only the voice over needs to be changed. The ad (with Nokia positioned as a radio) with music from 70s, 80s and 2000s was well done in Hindi and in Tamil as well. The song choices were excellent also.

Parting thought - The localization is all done by the same agencies or is it all outsourced? Can that be developed as a business model? You think of only the creative part for one language and we give you creative translation/dubbing services! Are these such companies already?

Since a lot of material about PGSEM is available in many other places, this is an attempt to get information from the Chairperson of the course, Professor Rajendra Bandi that would not be available elsewhere.

This interview was conducted as part of the ‘Career Development’ section in my company’s magazine SeISmO that I edit.

Excerpts from the session below! All emphasis are added by me!

SeISmO: Would you elaborate a bit more on this distance mode that you are trying?
Professor: Well, I would call this “Distributed” mode, not “Distance” mode. Because though the students and the faculty are geographically separated, they can communicate with each other as comfortably as any other class. The interaction is not through text messages or emails but there is a real-time face-to-face interaction between the faculty and the students.

It is important to understand the reason why Chennai was chosen first and we are mulling with Hyderabad now & not throwing it open to all cities. Though we rely on technology for this, we do not want to depend 100% on technology. Until we reach a stage where this mode of operation matures, we want the location to be such that our faculty can easily travel & attend to the classes in the other city. Chennai being the closest to Bangalore was chosen first. Hyderabad also can be reached easily. Thanks to Infosys, we have an excellent campus in Chennai. Another partner has agreed to set up the campus for us in Hyderabad.

SeISmO: From which session is the course starting in Hyderabad? I have heard it might start in Pune too.
Professor: We are far off from Pune. Hyderabad is next on our agenda. We had almost taken a call on this. But because of other dynamics like the count of PGP (regular MBA course of IIM-B) students being increased (due to reservation) etc., having this in Hyderabad would create a greater demand on the faculty time. We consider PGSEM at par with our full time PGP course in IIM-B & do not want to make any compromises on the program quality. So, given this uncertainty about the PGP seats, the formal green signal has not been given for this. That is the reason we are kind of holding back on this for now. Hyderabad is going to happen! But I cannot answer when, at this moment. We have been getting requests to start this in Pune & Gurgaon but in the next 2-3 years, there is no thought about it.

SeISmO: I have a question about the partner companies. Are there any specific seats that are reserved for partner companies?
Professor: There is no quota; per se. Partner companies are those that provided us generous support, in cash & kind, when the course was started. In return, what we offer them is that for a few years; if in our normal admission process, candidates from their company get selected, we would offer fee reduction to a few of them. The companies decide who gets it. That number varies from one partner to another. So there is no compromise on the admission process. Only after the normal admission process gets over, we identify the students from the partner companies & consult the company on who gets fees reduction.

SeISmO: Is there any specific formula that you apply on the techie that you take in, to make him a competent techno-manager when he goes out?
Professor: No. This is a general management program. It is only that we are conscious that the students we get in are good technologists. In terms of inputs that we provide to the students, the faculty may provide examples and cases that are related to technology. Also a few electives may be designed for your industry, for example, HR management course may be designed to fit your industry since people management issues faced in your industry are different from other industries. A lot of examples do come from other industries since there is a lot to learn from there. We want you to become good general managers whatever industry you work in. In summary, this is a general management course that is conscious that all its students come from the IT industry. The title of the program is very important here: The key in PGSEM is the word “enterprise”. It is about managing an enterprise primarily. Secondary is that the enterprises happen to be software development enterprises.

SeISmO: If this is a general management program, why not open this course to other industries?
Professor: This program (content, timings, duration, etc) has been designed specifically towards the general management requirements in the IT industry. Apart from that, there are other questions like why is this not an evening program. But we knew that if it were to be conducted between 6 and 9 in the evening, given the nature of their engagements, no software professional would be able to attend this. Such timings are different between IT and other industries. Not all industries have Saturdays free. The current program design makes it feasible for students from the IT industry. If we were to open it to other industries then there will have to substantial changes in the program logistics. The program in its current form is not feasible for students from other industries. We have debated this internally many times but the institute is very clear, that this program remains positioned for the professionals from the IT industry.

SeISmO: Would you tell something about the PGSEM Alumni who have gone out & made it big?
Professor: Sure. But one thing first, it takes a while for the alumni to make a mark. Our PGP alumni have been around for more than 3 decades now. But PGSEM alumni have been there only for less than half a decade. Yet if you look into the kind of alumni we have, it is impressive. In Infosys, we have Hargopal, who is a Senior VP today and he is singularly handling their Finacle product (banking product of Infosys). In Wipro, we have Suraj Prakash who is a Senior VP again. He is one person who I can still draw upon for any assistance for the institute in terms of evaluating project presentations & stuff like that. Another alumnus is Deepak Khandwal, from Siemens. He practically heads the India operations today. There is another person in Infosys who reports to Mr. Srinath Batni. He single handedly handles one of their prestigious projects (400 million dollar project) in Europe. Mr. Batni was mentioning to me that he had recommended PGSEM to that guy and that he could see a huge transformation in that person every week he was attending the course, in terms of his confidence in dealing with the clients and everyone else. That I think is essentially what we provide here. Anyone can pick up a book & understand the financial principles etc but the interaction between the students & between the student and the faculty is what causes this transformation. Then, in Honeywell, we have Madhava Vemuri. He in fact comes and teaches the PGSEM students here. In Motorola, we have Ramesh Sundarraman as a Business Development Manager for mobile business. He has convinced the management into making a slim & value for money phone designed specifically for India. The management got convinced and made him responsible for that project. The phone was launched recently. Now he is not the person who would get as much press coverage as a person in Pepsi or a Coke but he is one person who has made a substantial difference to the industry. There is another person, Sandeep who has quit his technical job & taken up the process reengineering project for the whole of British Council offices in South Asia. That is the kind of opportunities that the course opens up.

SeISmO: How does this course compare with PGP?
Professor: While PGP caters to people just out of college or who have very less experience, PGSEM caters to people who have worked long in the industry and who feel the need for a management education at that point. Though we do allow people from 2 years of experience, we do make sure to mention that we prefer people with 4-5 years of experience. Full time MBA is not an option that everyone can afford for various reasons. There are different people who take different paths. We do not want to make a judgment on one being a better route. In PGSEM, we want to reach out to people who want to continue working and at the same time enhance their competencies.

PGSEM is not a certificate seeking thing that can offer immediate tangible benefits. It is more the MBA experience and the overall package of knowledge that you get. If one thinks that his company might move him to a new position immediately, it may not happen. In full time PGP, at the end of two years, there is a different culmination – your placement. We do not offer that kind of a thing. However we are working on a career workshop kind of a thing where our students are given counseling by industry leaders on how to shape their careers further on.

From the institute’s point of view, the design, content & expectations wise, there is no difference between PGP and PGSEM. We make that statement even in our PGSEM certificate. However, we do acknowledge that the people who do this course work, have their own demands in family life that puts severe constraints on time. That is why we expect an approval form from the employers, because without the organizational support, it is not possible to complete this.

SeISmO: If I were to compare this course with ISB or PGP-X at IIM-A, can I say that they offer students a chance to move out of their current domain into other domains while PGSEM lets a student grow in the software domain itself?
Professor: Not necessarily! PGSEM does not presuppose those. It leaves enough opportunities for someone who wants to grow in the same industry, someone who wants to move to some other industry and also to someone who wants to remain in the same industry but wants to make a functional shift. The program is broad enough for the student to mould his career as he wants.

SeISmO: Who is an ideal student for PGSEM?
Professor: Unlike PGP, all the students coming into PGSEM have work experiences ranging from 2 to 15 years. So, we want the PGSEM students to share their experiences and perspectives & enrich the course itself.

First

Dear Friend/Well-Wisher,

Greetings!

This email is to inform you about a recent development in my life.

Come 17th of June 2006, I shall be taking the first step towards the next phase in my life. Though the urge to move into this phase was present for quite a while, it started in its current manifestation only for the last one year! The preparations were on, for most part of this time. The first tryst happened on 19th of March, 2006.

Though I was a little apprehensive about it proceeding further, it did proceed further - probably due to divine interventions in the wake of continuous prayers from my parents & well-wishers since they thought it was a not to be left proposal.

The second tryst happened on the 14th of April, 2006. We met for only 15 odd minutes. But everything seem to have got decided in just those 15 minutes.

And today it got finalized. The date has been set. It is 17th of June, 2006.

As I enter this phase, my freedom would get lost a bit. I might not be able to spend the weekend for myself. Also, I would have to be in India continusouly, at least for an year. My travels to Korea/elsewhere would get affected.

So that way, there would be a bit of loss on the monetary front too. More than that, I cannot think of changing companies at the drop of a hat. So, as we find from the preceding paragraph, we find that there are quite a bit of sacrifices to be made in the short term. All in the hope of getting better returns in the long term :)

As I step into this next phase, I need all your best wishes! Am sure you would wish me the best always! Thanks for that.

Well, since you might still be wondering "what the heck" I am talking about here, let me tell it straight. I have got admission to PGSEM course in IIM, Bangalore. The course starts from 17th of June, 2006. You thought it was something else? Silly! That is not a development! :)

Second

Dear Friend,

It was the most romantic day one can imagine. Soothing clouds had covered the sun & gaseous particles of love were floating around in a rhythmic pattern. Love was in the air. It was around 4 pm & I was with my mother. My mother introduced me to a dusky statuesque figure. Call it love at first sight or fleeting infatuation, I was immediately smitten by her. Believe me, it was my first date.

Initally, she seemed to be a little circumspect about my devotion towards her. I was miffed by this attitude; but in retrospect I can say she was just being thoughtful. It took a lot of efforts to instill in her the feeling that I was indeed meant for her. A big-time naive that I was, when we accosted each other, I was like a toddler and my heart was shuddering like a pressure cooker. Thankfully my parents were very helpful in setting up many of our initial meetings & were with us always.

Our relation since then has only burgeoned. We started seeing each other regularly. Soon after, I have not had the need for my parents to join. You know, sometimes it helps to not have them around. :) I have been with her for so long and in a lot of places - at geographies of varying time zones - that the romantic day mentioned above looks too much into the past.

These days, she has such a soothing and becalming aura about her that I don't have to put an extra effort to tune my frequency to hers. She has had relations (platonic of course!) with many more people - before & even after I got introduced - in fact, she is timeless in a way, I would say. Sometimes I feel jealous when she seems to be good with other people but I can vouch that our relation has never been as steady as it is now. Throughout my meetings with her to-date, I have felt so comfortable, giggled like a child & blushed till every pore of my skin suffused with tinge of red.

I’ve never been unfaithful to her, have never had a thought of severing the romantic link with her. And I guess she understands that. I have always found in her an understanding and a tolerant company; sometimes overlooking a fair share of escapades I venture into. We have of course had a few unpleasant memories, but I would better not dwell on that now! Nevertheless, I have received my own share of punishments from her - more so when I have oversped in bikes.

Today is the 27th anniversary of that romantic day. A day to remember that I am at the oldest I have ever been & at the youngest I will ever be.

If you wish to celebrate this, please come & have chocolates at my desk.

Ponnan, Ie10 & I set of to Phuket in a chartered flight that John Sir managed to arrange for us. He took care for emigration issues too.

There was a lone assistant in the flight. She approached us & asked,

"Shall I serve your food now, Sir?"

"No. We are OK. We will have it in Phuket" said Ie10. I was hungry but before I could talk something Ie10 signaled me to keep quiet.

She was a taken aback a little by this.

"Anything to drink, Sir"

"No."

"Anything else, Sir"

"Have sex with me"

Said Ie10 & pulled out her sari. Well, his sari.

She, sorry, he immediately took out his gun. But Ponnan was fast enough to hit him down.

"American agents..." said Ie10.

As soon as landed in a junk location in Phuket, we were not just three. We were an army. Yes, Ponnan brought all his men. Had a good night's sleep. The next day morning, we had a meeting arranged with his intelligence unit. They had found the following.

(1) The rival group of aliens had established a presence in Thailand
(2) They were constantly in touch with the Americans

But I wondered what they were planning to do.

"Come on guys... Now it is a problem that Thailand has with America... And Ie10 has with his rivals... Why do India or for that matter, I figure in?"

"My Lord... Don't talk crap..." His group was astonished to see Ponnan talk like this to the Lord... Nevertheless, he continued... "This is a global problem... It will be started at India... with ramifications across the globe...."

"Boy... but how?"

"Do you remember the Tsunami of 2004?"

"Of course... "

'It was not a natural disaster...”

"Then?"

"It was done by the aliens & the Americans... "

"How can they do it? I do not believe this... "

"Believe it or not, it was done by them... I am getting tired of you, my Lord...”

"Hmm, do you believe this, Ie10?"

"Of course... I do... "

"How is it possible?"

"Simple... Tell me how a Tsunami is formed?"

"By an earthquake under the sea... "

"Let us not call it earthquake... Let us say, by disturbances in the sea-bed... You agree?"

"Hmm... Yes, I do..."

"May be the Americans had disturbed the sea bed... using nuclear weapons.... to create this Tsunami.... of course with help from the aliens... "

"Why would they do this? What do they gain? They could instead bomb these countries... Thailand, Indonesia etc... By why at all these countries?"

Ponnan answered.

"You misunderstand it two fold... If they bomb directly, they get the world's wrath the next minute... Which they do not want... So this 'natural disaster thing'... Secondly, they do not want to destroy Indonesia or Thailand... They want to destroy India..."

"India? Why then here?"

"To escape suspicion.... They missed their target anyways...."

"Target?"

"Yes, they had targeted the Kalpakkam nuclear facility in India... They wanted the Tsunami to hit it... And the reactor getting broken... And create a disaster of the scale 100 times that of Chernobyl... This was just the starting... Like this, they planned to do things across the world... This would leave only the US... as the super power forever... "

"Boy..."

Ie10 said... "But that is what the Americans might think.... You think their alien friends would keep quiet after that? They want to conquer earth & establish their colonies here... With America's help, they would wipe out the world and then they would wipe off the Americans by creating divisions within the US..."

"Luckily for the world, they failed at the first step... "

"But they would try again, aint it...?"

"They are trying a lot of things... The tremors of smaller intensity seen across this region are not tremors... They are tests being done..."

As we were talking this, news reached us that an earthquake had occurred in Indonesia killing thousands...! Ponnan was furious.

"We got to act now... This is again to fool the world... That there are seismic actions in this region... A few days later, they would create another Tsunami... and this time it may hit Kalpakkam...."

"Wait, friends.... I will find out a way!!" Ie10 said.

As he was saying this, he was shot in the head by a bullet that no one knew! The Americans have apparently been following us. They should have got confused that one of their men had joined forces with us! Now, Ie10 had to come out of this body & get into someone else!! But then, when he comes out, the person would die. We did not have enough time to find an enemy to do this; we had to fight the enemies before they triggered the next Tsunami.

I volunteered. My own small way to save the world. Ponnan & others immediately offered themselves. But I was adamant. They had their own roles to play! If one of my fore fathers had actually fought the aliens, let me too do that! May be I too would end up in folklore!

Ie10 got into me. We became one now! Ie10 did a trick again. He partitioned my brain. He would reside one side & me on the other side. We would of course context switch to use the resources - the nerves, muscles etc! And we could communicate amongst us by a shared memory! He could even travel to his galaxy & get back - provided I am sleeping - until he comes back. If I wake up before that, I die. The boot up was stored in his section. So he needs to be present.

We then sat to discuss the action plan. We realized that there was no way to fight the US forces. Ponnan's men were just naive guerilla fighters. They cannot withstand the US army. Luckily for us, we got a message from the CIA. They wanted to talk to us. Apparently they had heard our talk. And when they got to know what Ie10 mentioned, that America would be wiped out later on, they should have got afraid.

I, as Ie10, met the local CIA agent for South East Asia soon after. The US Government, happy that they at least got into touch with some "good alien" decided to dump the other aliens - but they demanded that it should be shown to the world that they found the alien, and not India. We agreed. After all, the world should be saved.

The Americans dumped their friends as usual. They showed us the bad aliens. Ponnan & his men could easily destroy the physical bodies they had taken. And they had no go than to leave Earth & go. They could not reach their planet too. Ie10 had instructed his men to destroy them when they went back. Without their regular ammunition, they were killed. This created an intra-galactic war in Andromeda. Earth was safe at least until that goes on.

Ponnan & his men have returned to their job, of saving the Chola kingdom from aliens.

Only issue is that Ie10 cannot travel to his place so often. He would wait till I get into my deep sleep & my mind enters the delta level and leave my body. And get back immediately! Else I die. Once he tried to get out during my REM sleep but that caused fits in me. So he does not try that anymore.

I am trying in my own ways to help him, though. I am practicing various kinds of meditation now. And let my astral body float around the space. Ie10 & I (my astral body) have roamed till the end of Solar System so far. Soon, I expect to get the power to move more! And one day, roam around Andromeda with Ie10.

Till then, my colleagues at Nectar Hill would call me a psycho. That is OK. At least, John Sir does not anymore complain if I go late.

[A friend of mine had written a story for our company magazine's Flash Fiction Competition. I liked the crux of the story but not the narration. Here is the story, retold in my style]

On a dark and foggy night, a small figure lay huddled on the railway tracks leading to the Bangalore station. The train came to a screeching halt. The driver, the guards and a few nocturnal beings in the train approached the figure. There was a small school girl lying there unconscious, with her legs badly broken. Everyone wondered if she was alive. I checked her pulse & informed others that she was indeed alive. I tore a piece of my dhoti and tied around her wounds.

I brought a taxi immediately and took her to the Causality in the Wockhardt Hospital. Thank God, doctors could save her but her legs had to be amputated. I found some emergency numbers in her bag. Called & talked to her Dad. He is one of the richest persons in the town. He came, thanked me & offered me some gift. I refused that & moved out.

Wonder if he would at least now repent for the incident when he & his friends ran over my kid, killing her on the spot when they were reportedly "enjoying a drive" after a drink. I anyways moved on. The next guy is in New Delhi.

After a few days, as I readied my turban to be torn off easily to attend to any wounds, a small figure lay huddled on the railway tracks leading to the New Delhi station.

The High Grounds is packed. The Indian Navy Rolling Challenge trophy is on. I have come to watch a seal brown, the Kappu Kudure at the far right. Today is her last race. Her ears are tucked back; probably she is bored.

It was packed even then, in 2002, the Chinese Year of Black Horse. The 6 year old Kappu Kudre, the favorite from the Bangalorewala Racing & Breed for many races to come was readying for her first race.

The race has started. This oval shaped right-handed course has a demanding track & places a premium on both the speed and endurance of the horses; with sharp curves & gradients. Kappu Kudure has galloped to the gradient at the 1200th metre with only 3 horses behind her. No wonder, she is not the favorite these days.

She was the first to reach there then. But as we reached the 3rd sharp curve, she slowed down and I had to use the new shock absorbing whip. Her ears immediately pressed flat against the head. She pushed me down and ran over, causing permanent damage to my knees. The shock absorbing whip was not used on her after that.

She reaches the 3rd curve. She probably remembers that incident, stumbles & falls down. She is being carried away.

When I go to enquire about her, she sees my legs & gives me an apologetic look. I see tears in her eyes. She probably understands the talks of she being sold. But what she does not understand is that I am the one who is spending his fortune to buy her. After all, I understand the pains of someone without a leg. It’s been a week now since she exited my life through the narrowest outlets present. I won’t go into the details of the event, if you may call it that. No! Standing nervously beside this chair, I don’t have much time to render the entire tale. This past week, from Monday through Friday, I have cried and thought about suicide and now I am standing beside this high chair, with a noose in hand and a prayer on my lips that the fan holds steady and bears the weight.

To put it in a nutshell, I won’t blame only her for what happened. No sir! That would not be fair, but knowing that both are to be blamed for ending a long standing beautiful relationship, one would end up putting an end to life, isn't it?

“Damn this rope, I wonder how they tie the noose so easily in the movies. Maybe they have readymade nooses available in the shops.”

I have tried rationalising the situation many a time and have found ample reasons against such a literally life-threatening decision (I don’t call it life-ending as I still don’t believe this old fan would hold steady) But the truth is that I have found enough to counter those reasons too. My life has a big vacancy now. I will have so much more time and I don’t know what to do with it. I’m not a person with ample ambitions, neither am I one with many friends. As a 26 year old with the entire life looking to have been shattered ahead of him, I simply do not know what to do. Nor does she. Defeatist attitude you call it? Loser you call me? Well, good then. I’ll behave aptly.

“Ah! Finally, this knot should hold good. And now to garland this rope of death around the neck. Hmm! Not bad at all. This is turning out to be easier than I thought.”

I have stopped talking to her; that would only draw me into the deadly swirl of the pleasant memories of the past and I would be consumed in an instant. I know that. I tried talking to her last week and that’s what happened. It takes five minutes of conversation with an ex-lover to undo all the ostensibly nice things you have done to your self, like encouraging it to slowly forget the past and say the nicest of things like ‘Life goes on’ and you know…things like what you find in the ‘Chicken soup for the failed lover’ books.

“Now I’m all set; the rope strongly around the fan and around the neck as well. Three mighty tugs now. Strong inward breath; One, Two, and Three! That does it. Testing over and now for the final plunge.”

I do not, fortunately have much time left, her parents will be here any time now. I strongly believe that what I am doing is not an unwanted task. Its better the world rids itself of a such a person. I am a loser. Surprised? When did I ever refute that tag? I totally agree and as I said, act in accordance.

“Ok! Here I go. Rope strong enough, I hope. Everything is in place. Legs on tip of the tall back rest of the chair. I only have to kick the chair for my love to test the veracity of heaven and hell. And rebirth and karma as well. Ok! I’ll stop sounding like a Hindu priest and kick the way to death. Here goes…”

Afterword

There was pain; the strangulation around the throat was unbearable to her. Her legs flayed in the air in a scissoring action when the door burst open and in came her father, a strong father. In an instant she was on the floor and gasping for breath drinking greedily the water her tearful mom gave her. I glanced around the room mindless of the abuses her mom was throwing at me. The window! How thoughtless of me to leave the window open. The fan stood steady, bore the weight, but the window let me down. If not, they would have thought she was still sleeping. Through the steady barrage of words that were spouting out of her parents’ mouths, I was able to think and realised one thing. I was indeed a loser! And sitting in a jail now.

Two weeks back.

St. Joseph's College, Langford Town, Bangalore.

4.30 pm.

I had completed my "Cases in Marketing Management" paper in a jiffy. One more hour was left. My moronic (sic) friend was still writing his crap. He would be out only after an hour.

The customary cigarette can be had only after he is out. I was out in the lawns of the college wondering what to do. People of the next batch were slowly trickling in. Experience said that there would not be a single good looking chic to write a distance education exam!

As I was walking aimlessly from the Banyan tree towards the play ground, I heard some giggle - sweet ones, if I may add. It was coming from the first floor. So I got some aim. My legs automatically moved towards the stairs. But as I neared the stairs, the giggles were getting louder and seemed to move towards me. I walked back towards the Banyan tree.

The owner of the giggle came down. No wonder the giggle was sweet. Sweet girls always have sweet giggles. She was surrounded by a few thugs. Sweet girls always roam with thugs. Or, to put it perspective, guys with sweet girls always looks like thugs.

They all walked to the corridor near to the Old Library Hall and sat down there. It was a perfect view for me to watch her from the Banyan tree. I was at a distance where their talks were not audible but her giggle was.

She was wearing blue denim pants and a rose colored - I do not know what, let me say - some kind of clothing to cover (or reveal enough) of the upper portion of the body! She should be a student of the St. Joseph College. Should be all of 18 or 19 years! Had one of the most perfect structures I have seen. She had the power of attracting any male homo sapiens - not just practicing oglers like me- but even the not-so ogle inclined ones. Guess I need not bother to mention the reactions that happened in me.

Luckily I had a book with me. I sat under the Banyan tree and had my book open. It provided the perfect setting to watch her.

She would smile, burst into laughter suddenly, kick one of the thugs in his thighs, arms (I would like to kick on his dick & send him away, though). Every action of hers had a charm in it. It was getting increasingly difficult to remove my eyes away from her. She would bend (the gap between the tops & pants widening), stretch (the let-go-free boobs would protrude dangerously psyching one out), jump (both of the above). Every action of hers was seducing enough!

Believe me, I was not hallucinating. She started noticing me. She would turn every few seconds towards me and immediately turn her face away if she found me watching her. We continued this game for a while. I would pose as if I was reading the book. She would then watch me and the moment I looked up, she would turn away! Damn the thugs, it would have been my day!!

After a while, I noticed that she was getting restive. It was kind of confirmed that it was because of me. I wondered if I should move from that place. But her charm made me stay there. Next, she told something to the thugs - her fingers pointed towards me. Their laughter & shouting subsided. Everyone got up. And needless to say, walked towards me.

Adrenalin flowed. It was to be a fight or flight. Normally, I would have chosen the latter. But the fact that they were just college kids made me decide to fight. What the hell, I have come here for my exams. Who are they to question me!! Dekha jaayega!!

As they came near to me, I posed as if I was deeply immersed in the book.

"Excuse me, Sir". It was she.

"Yes..."

All the thugs were obediently standing behind. There seemed to be no animosity and only respect in their demeanor.

"Sir... We are so sorry to disturb you... I was telling my friends not to shout... But these guys were not listening..."

I did not know how to react. The thugs gave a sheepish grin. I followed suit.

"Well, no problem... That was not disturbing me anyways..."

"That is nice of you, Sir".

"You can actually call me Carnivas" [Oh! My Girl, I would do anything for you!!]

"Oh No, Sir... We have small request..."

"Yes..."

"From your jacket, we understand you work for Three Star Electronics... We want to know if you have any BPO operations that we could apply for..."

"Well, our company does not have any... but I have a friend who works for ICICI One Source... Send me your resume... I shall try through him for an interview..."

And handed my business card to her.

"Thanks a lot, Sir. That is so kind of you..."

"You are welcome..."

And they moved across. I was so happy that I could talk to her and was already making rapid plans of how all I can engage her once I get her email!!

But then, after a few steps she walked back and said...

"Sir, you are so inspiring to us... We are not able to concentrate on our studies even now... but you are doing an MBA at this age even after having married and gotten kids..."

I felt as if someone had given a tight slap on my face!! After all, I am 27 years old. And my receding hairline & increasing waistline suggests even more! No wonder she thought I was married & even had kids! There was at least one generation of gap between us. And I felt quite embarrassed to have ogled at her for long.

I could only manage an embarrassed smile. She waved Bye-Bye and left.

I too left immediately. Damn the moron who was still writing the exam.

As I crossed the Hockey Stadium, I found an obese software engineer working for Truth Software Services in her late twenties. She was in an auto stand and was ogling at an 18-20 year old guy in a stylish bike. I muttered to her in my native tongue not to ogle at 20 year olds & how dangerous it is!! God knows what she understood. She smiled. And asked me if I could offer lift to her up to Koramangala as no autowalah was ready to go. I agreed and again muttered in my native tongue - Not just on the way, I shall offer you lift in life too. Again, God knows what she understood. As she got in my car, she giggled.

And it was sweet too.

I was so thrilled when I got this chance to visit Lily's place! In a way, Lily would be in my place too! Among millions of contestants, I was one among the four lucky ones to get this chance. What more, it was told Lily would herself guide us through the whole place.

Lily, if you are not aware, is the most famous actress in the world today. Year after year, she has been voted the most beautiful woman on earth, living or dead. She owns the largest and the most beautiful house in the whole world. She has been married seven times so far. Now she is single.

When XYZ telecommunications had announced this lucky dip offer, there was a mad frenzy to buy their products. Though I was not too keen on winning this, I did make a few silent prayers to get this chance.

I wore my best double breasted suit for the occasion. There was heavy security to enter her place. My identity was verified every few steps! Though it was a little annoying I decided not to get bothered with these and spoil my mood when I would be face to face with the most beautiful person on earth.

The other three people also joined soon. We were introduced to each other. It made me a little insecure that all three were younger than me. But what the hell, Lily is not young either. She might find me the most mature of that lot. As I was saying hello to that kiddo from India, he gave me a wry smile as though he understood my thought.

Her personal assistant appeared first. She started off with a speech on how Lily felt proud about being associated with XYZ telecommunications, how good their products are and what a big difference they made to her life. It was all crap.

The assistant first showed us the room where all Lily’s awards were in display! Then she showed us the garden, the kitchen, the drawing room, servant's room and what not, but Lily wouldn't appear! In every room, she would talk about the products of XYZ telecommunications in that room and how helpful it was, for her to maintain the house. It was all boring. May be it would have made more sense had Lily herself done all these, as promised before!

At last, she took us to Lily's personal bedroom and Lily made her appearance. She was, I should say, in her charming best. The dark blue dirndl she was wearing was a perfect fit to her perfect cuts & curves. The assistant introduced all of us to her.

As Lily started saying, "Hello Kay... It is a pleasure to...", my Internet connection conked out and my monitor was all blank. Thus, the promotion of XYZ Communications about their new ultra speed Internet Connection - that would make real time video streaming from multiple locations so effective - became such a massive flop.

"Hey Johnnie, would you do it?" asked Freddie.

I did not answer him. I was busy eating. Freddie has not been eating for many days now. He is that revolutionary kind. I do not mind all that. But what I do mind is he wanting me to join him & start a strike against our employers.

"Listen to me one last time, Johnnie..."

I do not generally speak while eating. I signalled him to continue.

"Let me start with some history! The silk production was first started by the Chinese, around 2700 BC... That was their main trade of that era... I am sure you have heard of the silk route, no?"

I gave him a look wondering how it all matters to me! He would now start off with how the employers make a lot of money out of silk while the employees barely get something to eat! He continued, anyways.

"It then spread to India, Japan and slowly to every part of the world. Silk became the norm of the upper classes. More silk in your dress, more respect you got!"

So what? It is just not in his hands to shutdown this factory & mill. Even if all of us go on strike, we would be replaced by another bunch!

"Initially, these guys were not torturing us. They would just extract work out of us & leave us alone..."

But what has gone wrong now? I just had my stomach full. I opened my mouth for the first time to make it a proper dialogue now!

"Who is torturing you or me now?"

"Not now. But you know what happened to Jimmie & his gang, I suppose... "

"Not really... All I know is that he is dead... And he died by falling into the boiling water..."

"He did not die... He was killed... Not just he... Thousands of others are killed... Only the adult among us who can produce enough silk are let to live... Many others are killed or stifled as soon as they complete the pupae... "

I was shocked.

"Not just that... The weaker ones are killed by immersion in boiling water, steaming, by laying in the sun on a hot day, electrocution or subjection to microwaves..."

I could not bear all this. Just the thought of it would have sent a shiver down my spine, if I had one. Nevertheless, there was fear.

"Now tell me Johnnie, would you still do it?"

"Certainly not, Freddie. Now, I shall join you & convince the rest of the gang too..."

The mulberry leaves that I was eating looked like poison now!

We were successful in our attempt. None of us produced the silk threads used by men. We might all die. But then our successors would live. And live peacefully.

After a few days, someone was saying.

"Sir, this looks to be a new species. This looks exactly like Bombyx Mori, but just does not produce Silk. The miracle called evolution!!"

Enough was enough. I could not stand that anymore. That my wife was a fornicatress. She was mine. And should be only mine. It started off as a rumor, in the neighborhood. That my wife slept with another man. I dismissed it first. Later, even my closest pals were telling me that. That they saw someone getting into my house, everyday, after I left for work.

I did not go to work one day. I hid on the shrubs opposite my house. Exactly 20 minutes after I was supposed to have gone, he entered my house. I gave them 5 minutes. Let them first undress. I knocked the door hard. No response for long. There should be dressing now, I thought.

Finally, my wife came out. I pushed her away & entered the house to hit him. I could not. For, there was an old man sitting there, with his eyes closed. Should, at least, be an octogenarian. My wife rushed in. She signaled me to maintain silence. He got up after sometime & left the house without speaking a word. I rushed out, to find out who he was. But all I saw was a young man starting his car. I was puzzled.

My wife told that he was a sage. That he could cure my schizophrenia. Apparently, she had met him in a sermon. He heard of my problem from her and promised to cure it within a month with the prowess of his meditation. He was not an ordinary mortal. He could travel back & forth in time.

I felt guilty. After a week, I went to his place. This time, he was in his mid-forties. He smiled at me and said - 'Welcome Back'.

Back? May be I went there sometime in the future too, I thought.

I pleaded for pardon. Suddenly it struck me. What if I could travel back in time? And not suspect my wife, this time? I would get a chance to get rid of my guilt. I asked his help. He smiled again. He said he would help. I could not come back to the present time, if I go. I would forget everything that happened from then, till now. Exactly what I wanted. May be this time, I would not suspect her. Leave it to the God. I wanted to live without any guilt. So I agreed. I wanted to go to that morning when I decided not to go to the office.

I got into his time machine. My body was shaking heavily. As I started to move out of the present time, I found someone coming out of his bedroom. That was my wife. She looked very tired. And old.

63 Building was one of the few must-see spots of Seoul that I had not visited. And there was a chance to visit it a couple of weekends back.

The 63 building, if you still have a doubt, has 63 floors and is the tallest building in Seoul. It is located so close to the bank of the Han River, that divides the Seoul City. They say it also divides two different strata of the Korean society. Since I reached the spot quite early, thought I would spend sometime at the Han River bank before going into the building itself. There was an excellent view of the Seoul Tower from the river bed.

Koreans have this specialty of both working & partying hard. There was a large crowd on the river bank to cool themselves after a hot afternoon. It reminded me of the crowd in the Pondicherry sea shore during summer. Families had spread mats across the river bed and were sipping Sojus and Beers. Young couples in intimate positions seemed to be present everywhere. Or that is what my lonely and frustrated brain wanted to look for! There were kids flying kites. The atmosphere was simply excellent. Shot a lot of photos across the river bed.

Once it started getting dark, I picked up a coffee and started walking towards the 63 building. That is when I saw a big group of people dancing to some catchy Korean music. I stopped there to take a couple of snaps. All of them were youngsters in the age group of 20-25 and looked to be college kids. They looked to be in some kind of a uniform also. They were all wearing black colored trousers and yellow colored shirts. I noticed that there was a clear separation between the boys and girls of that group. It reminded me of the rules laid in some colleges in Tamil Nadu that boys & girls should sit separately in the classes and some even imposed fine if a boy & girl were found talking to each other! Such rules exist in Korea too, I wondered. Even though it is getting rapidly westernized, some Asiatic thought still seems to remain!

As I was tapping my legs for that music, someone tapped my shoulder. It was a Korean male who was shooting the dance with a video camera. Should be one from that group. He too was in the same kind of dress.

"Hello... You wanna join?"

"Ah.. Er... No... I do not know to dance..."

"Oh... Don’t worry about that... Just join us..."

"Well... Sorry.. No, I should go to the 63 Building... Heard they do not allow entry after 7..."

"Oh... Is that so... "

"Yeah... Excuse me..."

"Well, in that case, I can join you to the 63..."

"No Thanks... I appreciate... I would manage..."

"Come on, friend... I will join... By the way, my name is Lee,WonQ"

"Well, I am Karthik..."

"Okay Kasheek, come let us go..."

And he started walking along with me. Initially, I got irritated by this unwanted company. Later on, I found him to be a good company. He spoke very good English for a Korean. He knew exactly what to look for in the 63 Building, where to get tickets etc. He helped me with a few good photographs too. The aquarium was closed for renovation and so we went to only the Observation Deck at the 61st floor. The lift was very fast. It covers 60 floors in flat 2 minutes! The lift at my apartment in Bangalore takes 2 minutes to close its doors!

The observation deck was excellent. It gave a good view of the complete Seoul city. Cars looked like tiny toys in the 30X zoom binocular! It was fun to look around. And for your information, it was written that BOMBAY was 5574 Kms from that spot. I took a couple of photographs with WonQ also. That would help in boasting to others how much I am used to 'cosmo culture' and how I can easily mix with people of different cultures. WonQ insisted on me putting my hands around his shoulders. He too has to boast to his friends about how close was to a foreigner. After having wheat rolls and orange juice at the cafeteria (WonQ, of course had something made of beef), we started our way back.

There was one old man in the lift when we entered. But as we entered, he frowned and went outside. I felt so insulted. WonQ calmed me down and said this was common in Korea. I got agitated and asked him what was common!. He said the person who went outside was his Dad and they had not been in talking terms for long! He said the problem between the older and newer generation of people was so common in Korea. The older generation (who had worked hard to develop the country to the standard of western countries) does not approve of the rapid westernization of the newer one, he said. He said his Dad does not approve of his activities and created a big scene when he had taken his first date to their house. So he has moved out of the house. I wondered if such a thing would happen in India also soon as one of the effects of globalization! Or has it already?

It was already 9 pm. I thought I would take a leave from WonQ. But he said he would also go to Suwon and we could go together in the Metro. As we passed the river bed, the dance party was about to end. Upon WonQ's insistence, I too joined the dance for the last couple of minutes.

Then we walked towards the Metro station to take the next train to Suwon. As we walked, WonQ said

"Hey you wanna see my first date?"

"Yeah Sure..."

"Do you see the one going there.... The long one with that yellow shirt tucked in..." and pointed to someone at some distance.

It was already very late and I could not see much of the face. By the way what is there to see in the face! It is all flat noses and dug-in eyes!

"Did you see?" he asked again.

"Ah yes..." I said and looked again. Korean females generally are not blessed with big mammas and this particular one was as flat as a carom board! In fact, a few of my friends (male) would have them much bigger!

"Is the relation still on?"

"No... It did not work out..."

"Oh.. Okay... May I ask why?"

"Ha Ha.. Why not.. You know what? Across the world, the males want it bigger..." and winked at me!

"I understand..."

"You naughty boy.."

The train was heavily crowded. Weekends are generally very crowded. But that day was a little too much. There was no space left for even standing comfortably. It was like a Pallavan bus travel in Chennai. Yes, you guessed it right. There was enough scope for misbehaving with females. And to my luck, there was a beautiful Russian lady ahead of me. The heavy crowd made sure that I had to lean on her all through the travel. She did seem to mind. But I was getting horny. The complete front portion of my body was leaning on her back. My head was positioned just above her shoulders to give me a perfect view of what was there below her neck. She was anyways barely dressed and did not seem to care about anything. And I was enjoying it.

Poor guy, WonQ was had to be content with a Korean female behind him. He was getting pushed by her from behind and he was falling on me. And in turn I was falling on the Russian female.

"You seem to be enjoying it..." WonQ whispered in my ears.

"Well, yes..." I grinned.

"Me too.." he said.

Finally, we got down at the Suwon station. We rushed to the taxi stand.

"Okay... WonQ... I will take leave now... I do not have my card with me... Gimme your card... I shall call you sometime...."

"Where are you going?" he frowned.

"To the guest house..." I said.

"And me?" he looked agitated.

"How do I know?" I said with a puzzled look.

"Why did you bring me to Suwon?"

"What? I brought you to Suwon?"

"Don't play with me, Kasheek..." his eyes were red.

"What are you talking? I do not understand..." I too got angry.

"Then why did you join the dance?"

"You called me... So I did... And how is it related to you coming to Suwon?"

"Let me ask you straight... Aren't you gay?"

"WHAT.........?"

"Aren't you gay?"

"NO... "

"Shiba... Shiba.... Fuck you man.... Why dint you protest in the train when I was falling on you? You told you were enjoying it..." (Shiba in Korean is FUCK)

"Hey come on..." Every incident from that evening started flashing into my mind. So was that a gay & lesbian group?

"And what about this dress? Now come with me..."

That is when I noticed that I too was wearing black trousers and an yellow tee.

The next moment I got into a taxi and told him to speed off. I could see WonQ shouting at the top of his voice when I looked behind. It took a couple of minutes for my heart beat to get normal and stop sweating.

And as I was giving the route map of the guest house to the cab driver, he turned back and grinned at me. He too was wearing black trousers and an yellow shirt.

Annual day function at a local school. He had come as the chief guest. He was an alumnus of that school. He talked about the innocence of one's childhood that gets lost as he gets old.

He recalled his school days – soon forgotten little quarrels with friends, last minute assignments, cricket matches at short notice, road side snacks & friends who did not care about money!

He compared it with his current life – never ending pinpricks with business partners, unethical practices in businesses, no time for play, health problems & acquaintances who want nothing but money!

Everyone loved his speech. They were thrilled to hear the greatest entrepreneur of their city talk about his childhood experiences. Another side of his personality was revealed.

He completed his speech with ‘God, give my childhood back’. That drew a big round of applause.

As he was heading home, I asked him

‘I can turn you back into a child. Shall I’?

‘Who are you’?

‘They call me God’.

He started sweating. He thought for a moment and said – ‘Don’t take my talk seriously. I do not want to go through everything again. I am happy what I am’.

I smiled and disappeared.

Sinhalese source ஆக இருந்தால், தமிழ் தீவிரவாதிகள் விரோதிகள் என்று இருக்கும். இரண்டையும் நம்பக்கூடாது என்று கூடவே இருக்கும் skeptical mind சொல்லும். நேருவின் Glimpses of World History யில் ஓரளவு (பொன்னியின் செல்வன் காலத்து) சிங்கள வரலாறு கிடைக்கும். 4-5 மாதங்கள் முன்பு தினத்தந்தியில் ஒரு தொடர் வந்தது - பழைய காலத்து கதையெல்லாம் (நான் முழுதும் படிக்கவில்லை). இந்த இரண்டு source கள் மூலம் தெரிந்து கொண்டது (or atleast assumed/inferred) - தமிழர்கள் பல காலமாக சிங்களத்தில் இருப்பவர்கள். இப்போதுள்ள சிங்களர், கலிங்க தேசத்திலிருந்து (இப்போதுள்ள ஒரிசா மாநிலம்) சென்றவர்கள். ஆக, இந்த சிங்களர்கள் ஒரு காலத்தில் இந்தியர்கள் (கலிங்கர்கள் ஆரியர்களா / திராவிடர்களா என்று தெரியவில்லை). சோழ ராஜ்ஜியம், மற்றும் பிரிட்டிஷ் ஆட்சியின் போது மேலும் பல தமிழர்கள் அங்கே சென்றுள்ளனர். இரு ethnics groups க்கும் இடைய animosity அப்போதிருந்தே இருந்திருக்கிறது. பிரிட்டிஷ்காரர்கள், சென்ற பின் democracy வந்து சிங்களர்கள் majority ஆக இருந்ததால், தமிழர்களுக்கு பிரச்சனை ஆரம்பித்தது. இதற்கு பிறகு நடந்தவை பற்றி விரிவாக, unbiased ஆக எங்கும் எதுவும் கிடைக்கவில்லை. (As told before, நான் விரிவாக தேடவுமில்லை). அப்போது, as they say, universe conspired, at least ஹரன் பிரசன்னா did! கிழக்கு பதிப்பகம் வெளியிட்டிருக்கும் பல புத்தகங்களை வரிசைபடுத்தி, அவைகளை review செய்வதாக இருந்தால், ஓசியில் தருவதாக எழுதியிருந்தார். அதில், "பிரபாகரன் - வாழ்வும், மரணமும் by பா ராகவன்" இருக்கவே, உடனே அவருக்கு மின்னஞ்சலினேன். இரண்டே நாட்களில் அனுப்பினார். நானும் இரண்டே நாட்களில் (just about an hour and a half each day) முடித்தேன். ஆனால், review எழுததான் இவ்வளவு நாட்கள் ஆகிவிட்டன. (இந்த வலைப்பதிவின் frequency of updates பாருங்கள், நான் எவ்வளவு பெரிய சோம்பேறி என்று தெரியும்).

பா. ராகவனின் எழுத்தைப்பற்றி நான் எழுதுவது அபத்தம். மிகத்தெளிவாக, மிக நேர்த்தியாக எழுதியுள்ளார். Reading it through was a breeze: 3-4 மணி நேரங்களில் முடிந்தது. அனைத்து விஷயங்களையும் கிரஹித்துக்கொண்டு, இவ்வளவு சீக்கிரம் முடிப்பது கஷ்டம் - அது படிப்பவரைவிட எழுதியவரை பொறுத்தது. அதற்கு ஒரு Hats Off அவருக்கு. இதற்கு மேல் எழுத்தைப்பற்றி ஒன்றும் சொல்லாமல், content என்ன என்று பார்ப்போம். முன்னரையிலேயே disclaimers சொல்லி விடுகிறார் - இது பல sources களிலிருந்து சேகரிக்கப்பட்ட விஷயம் என்று, அதிலும் chronological ஆக எல்லாம் சொல்லப்போவதில்லை என்றும் சொல்லி விடுகிறார்.

பிரபாகரன் என்ற ஒரு complex personality யைப்பற்றி பாரபட்சம் இல்லாமல் எழுதுவது கடினம்தான். இந்த புத்தகமும் முயற்சி செய்கிறது - ஆனால், அதில் வெற்றியடையவில்லை. பல இடங்களில், பிரபாகரனின் எதிரிகள் தரப்பு வாதங்கள் விளக்கப்படவேயில்லை. சிங்களர்களை விட்டுவிடுவோம், மற்ற தமிழர்களின் வாதங்கள் கூட இல்லை - உமா மஹேஸ்வரன், கருணா, மாத்தையா - இவர்களிடம் ஏதேனும் நியாயம் இருக்கலாம், இல்லையா? ஆனால், அது பற்றி நமக்கு இந்த புத்தகத்தில் தெரிய வரவில்லை. கடைசி பக்கங்களில், பிரபாகரன் ஒரு dictator போன்று செயல்பட்டார் என்பது போன்ற வாதங்கள் உள்ளன, but they are too less, too late! By then, நம் மனதில் அவர் பெரிய Hero ஆகி விடுகிறார். :)

புத்தகத்தில் எனக்கு தெரிந்த மற்ற குறை - பல இடங்களில், கதை incomplete ஆக உள்ளது. சம்பவங்களின் கோர்வையாக இருந்தால் கூட, இடையில் பல வருடங்கள் அவர் வாழ்க்கையில் என்ன நடந்தது என்றே தெரியவில்லை. Particularly, ராஜிவ் காந்தி சாவுக்குப்பிறகு மிக அரிதான விஷயங்களே கிடைக்கின்றன. அதற்கு முந்தைய காலங்கள் பற்றிய கதையில், சில ஓட்டைகள் இருந்தாலும் (for example, 1972 வில் வீட்டை விட்டு வெளியேறும் பிரபாகரன், 1974 ல் தான் துரையப்பாவை கொல்கிறார், ஆனால் புத்தகத்தின் முதல் அத்தியாயத்தில், அவர் துரையப்பாவை கொன்றுவிட்டு வீட்டுக்கு சென்று படுத்துக்கொண்டதாக குறிப்பிடப்பட்டுள்ளது),பரவாயில்லை, ஏதோ idea கிடைத்துவிடுகிறது. பிரபாகரனின் MGR மற்றும் ராஜிவுடனான உறவுகள் அருமையாக விளக்கப்பட்டுள்ளன. கருணாநிதி அப்போதிருந்தே Opportunistic ஆகத்தான் இருந்து வருகிறார் பொலிருக்கிறது. அந்த சமயங்களில், போராளிகள் நினைத்தால் இந்தியா வந்துவிடுவதைப்பார்த்தால், பயமாக உள்ளது. நமது/ஸ்ரீலங்கா கடல்படை அவ்வளவு ineffective ஆ என்று!!

இந்த புத்தகம் மூலம், எனக்கு பிரபாகரனை/புலிகளைப்பற்றி பல புதிய விஷயங்கள் தெரிய வந்தன. யாசிர் ஆரஃபத், தலிபன் உடனான அவர்களது தொடர்புகள், அவர்களது கப்பல் கம்பனிகள் பற்றிய விவரங்கள், JN Dixit ன் நாடகங்கள் எல்லாம் எனக்கு completely new!

Getting this book from Haran has been one of the best decisions I have taken in recent times, I should say!

Final Verdict: உங்களுக்கு பிரபாகரனைப்பற்றி detailed, academic ஆய்வு செய்ய வேண்டுமென்றால், இந்தப்புத்தகத்தினால் பயனில்லை. Coffee Table/ Water cooler discussions செய்ய வேண்டிய அளவு ஞானம் இருந்தால் போதும் என்றால், இதுதான் best source. இதில் உள்ள விஷயங்களை வைத்து பல விவாதங்களை (particularly involving non-Tamilians who think Kashmir & Eezham are similar) வென்று விடலாம்.

Go for it.

இப்போது: 10 ஜூன் 2009 காலை

கத்திப்பாரா மேம்பாலம். மியாட் மருத்துவமணை செல்ல பூந்தமல்லி சாலையை நோக்கி காரைத்திருப்பினேன்.

“இங்கயா திரும்பணும்?” என் அம்மா.

“ம்..”

“அவனுக்கு தெரியாதாம்மா?” என் தம்பி.

“அது சரி.. எனக்கு என்ன வழி தெரியும்”

“எனக்கே கொழப்பமா இருக்கு, ரெண்டு வருஷம் முன்னாடி வந்தப்போ ப்ரிட்ஜ் கட்டிண்டுன்னா இருந்தான்” என் அப்பா.

“ம்”

“ஏன் டா கம்முன்னு வர்ற, வெங்கீ…” என் அம்மா.

“ஒன்னும் இல்லம்மா…”

“ஹிரண்யா ஒன்னும் பெரிசு இல்லடா… நாம பை பாஸ் எல்லாம் பாத்துட்டோம்…”

நம் குடும்பத்தில் யாருக்காவது சர்ஜரி நடக்கும் போது தான் வியாதிகளைப்பற்றி நாம் முழுமையாக கற்றுக்கொள்கிறோம். என் அப்பாவின் உபயம் - பை பாஸ் பற்றியும், ஹெர்னியா பற்றியும் என் பாட்டி கூட ஒரு விகிபீடியா பக்கம் எழுத முடியும். என்ன, ஹெர்னியாவை ஹிரண்யா என்று எழுதுவாள். அவ்வளவுதான்.

“அப்பா மேல அவ்ளோ பாசம் மா அவனுக்கு…” பெரிய ஜோக் சொன்னது போல சிரித்தான் என் தம்பி. அவனுக்கு எல்லாமே சிரிப்புதான். (கலைஞர் டீவி நிகழ்ச்சி அல்ல)

“பாசமா…!! ராத்திரி தங்கணுமேன்னு கவல படுவானா இருக்கும்… அப்போ கூட நான் தான் காப்பி கலந்து குடுக்கணும்…” அப்பாவும் சேர்ந்து கொண்டார்.

“இல்ல இல்ல… மொபைல் தொலஞ்சதா இருக்கும்… 40 ஆயிரம் போச்சே… இந்த தரம் பத்ரம்பா… இப்போ ஆனா அவ்ளோ காஸ்ட்லி மொபைல் வச்சுக்கலயே…”

“மொபைலா முக்கியம்… தலைல அடி பட்டது பத்தி கவல படக்காணும்…”

அவர்கள் சொல்வது உண்மைதான் - பழய ஞாபகம் தான். ஆனால் அவர்களுக்கு தெரியாத வேறு ஞாபகங்கள் – ஆண்ட்ரியாவைப்பற்றி.

மியாட் மருத்துவமணையின் பல ரெட்-டேப்களைத்தாண்டி அப்பாவை ரூமில் அமர்த்தினோம். ஒருவர்தான் உடன் இருக்கலாம் என்பதால் நானும் தம்பியும் வெளியே வந்து விட்டோம். தம்பியை வீட்டுக்கு அனுப்பிவிட்டு, ரிஸப்ஷனில் போய் ஆண்டனியைப்பற்றியும் ஆண்ட்ரியாவைப்பற்றியும் விசாரித்தேன். பைத்தியக்காரத்தனம் தான். என்ன செய்ய. எதிர்பார்த்தது போலவே அவர்களைப்பற்றிய எந்த தகவலும் கிடைக்கவில்லை.

ஆனந்த விகடன் வாங்கிக்கொண்டு கார் பார்க்கிங்கில் போய் உட்கார்ந்தேன். ஆனால் படிக்க முடியவில்லை. பழைய ஞாபகங்கள்.

ஆண்ட்ரியாவின் ஞாபகங்கள்.

அப்போது: 21-22-23 ஜூன் 2007

பை பாஸ் சர்ஜரி முடிந்து, இரண்டு நாட்கள் ICU வில் வைத்துவிட்டு அப்பாவை அன்றுதான் ரூமுக்கு அழைத்து வந்தார்கள். அம்மாவும் நானும் இருந்தோம். ஒரு டாக்டர், ஒரு நர்ஸ் மற்றும் ஒரு Physiotherapist வந்தார்கள். Physio அழகாக இருந்தாள். அம்மாவிடம் டாக்டர் விளக்கங்கள் கொடுக்க என்னிடம் இவள் அப்பா செய்ய வேண்டிய பயிற்சிகளைப்பற்றி பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தாள். நீங்கள் கவலைப்பட வேண்டாம், நானே தினமும் இரவு வந்து அவரை exercise செய்ய வைக்கிறேன் என்றாள். (அது ஏன் இரவில் என்று தெரியவில்லை). அவள் அழகில் லயித்திருந்தேன் நான் – செமையான மல்லு குட்டி, என்று என்னுள் இருந்த மிருகம் சொல்லியது. மருத்துவமணைகளில் நர்ஸ்கள் தான் sisters, Physio வை எல்லாம் சைட் அடிக்கலாம் என்று சமாதானம் சொல்லிக்கொண்டேன்.

அன்று இரவே எனக்கு அங்கே தங்கி அவள் exercise சொல்லிக்கொடுக்க வரும்போது பார்த்து பேச வேண்டும் என்றுதான் ஆசை. ஆனால் அன்று அம்மா தான் தான் இருப்பேன் என்று சொல்லிவிட்டதால் ஒன்றும் செய்ய முடியவில்லை – After all, அப்பாவை கவனிப்பதுதான் முக்கியம் என்று வீட்டுக்கு போய்விட்டேன். (நெஜமா பாஸ்)

அடுத்த நாள் இரவு என் தம்பி தான் இருப்பதாக சொல்ல, உனக்கு வயசு பத்தாது என்று சொல்லி விரட்டி விட்டு, நானே இருந்தேன். மருத்துவமணையில் இரவு தங்குவதற்கு நீட்டாக ஷேவ் செய்து மேக்கப் எல்லாம் போட்ட முதல் ஆள் நானாகத்தான் இருக்கும்.

அவள் வந்தாள். சிரித்தாள். சொக்கிப்போனேன். அவளுடன் சேர்ந்து அப்பாவை நானும் அதட்டினேன்.

நானும் எவ்வளவோ  பெண்களிடம் வழிந்து வழிந்து பேசியிருக்கிறேன் – கல்லூரியில் எனக்கு ‘ஜொள்ளு பார்டி’, ‘கடலை மன்னன்’ என்றெல்லாம் தான் பெயர் (பொறாமைக்காரர்கள் வைத்தது). ஆனால், எந்தப்பெண்ணுடம் பேசியே ஆக வேண்டும் என்று desperate ஆக இருந்ததில்லை. ஒரு ஃபிகர் இல்லையென்றால் இன்னொன்று என்று தான் நினைப்பேன். ஆனால், இவளை பார்க்கும் போது மட்டும் ஏனோ ஒரு இனம்புரியாத ஈர்ப்பு வருகிறது. வயதாகி விட்டதோ என்று பயந்தேன்.

Exercise முடித்து அவள் செல்லும் முன், “இங்கே biscuits ஏதாவது கிடைக்குமா” என்றேன்.

“கீழே Pharmacy ல கேளுங்க” என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு அடுத்த ரூமுக்குள் சென்று விட்டாள்.

Pharmacy யில் கிடைக்கும் என்பது எனக்குத்தெரியாதா. அப்படியே அவளுடன் பேசிக்கொண்டே கீழே போகலாம் என்றால் – அது தெரியாமல் அடுத்த ரூமுக்குள் போகிறாள்.

அப்பா தூங்கியவுடன் வெளியே அந்த ப்ளாக்கின் லாபிக்கு வந்தேன் – ஏதாவது வேண்டுமென்றால் அப்பா மணி அடிப்பார். ‘Black Swan’ ஐ வைத்துக்கொண்டு அங்கிருந்த ஸோஃபாவில் உட்கார்ந்தேன். ஒன்றும் படிக்க பிடிக்கவில்லை. அப்படியே கண்ணை மூடிக்கொண்டு உட்கார்ந்தேன்.

“உள்ள தூங்க முடியலயா?”

அவள் தான். வெள்ளை உடையில் தேவதை.

“இல்ல… அதெல்லாம் ஒன்னும் இல்ல… தூக்கம் வரல…”

“ஓ… அப்போ எனக்கு கம்பனி கெடச்சது….” என்று சிரித்துவிட்டு பக்கத்தில் உட்கார்ந்துகொண்டாள்.

“Oh my pleasure..” என்று அசடு வழிந்தென். அதற்கெல்லாம் சொல்லியா கொடுக்க வேண்டும்.

ஓரிரு கணங்கள் ஒன்றுமே பேசவில்லை. பல பேருக்கு கடலை போட கத்துக்கொடுத்திருக்கிறேன் – முதலில் இப்படி பேசு, அப்படி தலை ஆட்டு என்றெல்லாம் சொல்லுவேன். ஆனால் இவள் முன்னால் பேச முடியவில்லை. உதடெல்லாம் உலர்ந்து போனது போல் இருந்தது. கடைசியில் மொக்கையாக

“Regular ஆ Night Shift ஆ?” என்றேன்.

“ஆமா…” என்று புன்னகைத்தாள்.

“வீடு பக்கத்துலயேவா?”

“இல்ல கேகே நகர்…”

“ஓ… Commute எல்லாம் கஷ்டமா இல்லையா?”

“இல்ல… எங்க அண்ணன் இங்க Admin Department ல இருக்கான்… அவனுக்கும் Regular ஆ Night Shift… So சேர்ந்தே வந்துட்டு போய்டுவோம்…”

“…”

அண்ணனா… வில்லன்… பக்கத்திலேயே இருக்கிறானா!

“நீங்க reception ல பாத்திருக்கலாம்… ஆண்டனின்னு….”

“ஓ…”

அவனா… மாடு மாதிரி இருந்தானே.

“நீங்க? சாஃப்ட்வேரா? பாங்களூரா?”

“…”

அது என்ன. நீளமான முடியுடன் ஃப்ரென்ச் பியர்ட் வைத்தால் ‘சாஃப்ட்வேர், பெங்களூரா?’

“தப்பா? சும்மா guess பண்ணினேன்”

“சரி… ஆனா தப்பு… பெங்களூர் சரி, சாஃப்ட்வேர் தப்பு… I am on my own, Digital Marketing Consultant ஆ இருக்கேன்.”

“ஓ…”

சத்தியமாக “Digital Marketing Consulting” என்று சொன்னது புரிந்திருக்காது. வழக்கமாக சொல்லும் விளக்கத்தை சொன்னேன்.

“அது… இந்த Websites ல…”

“தெரியும்… Digital Marketing ன்னா என்னன்னு தெரியும்… Social Media Marketing லயும் Expert ஆ?'”

அடிப்பாவி. இதெல்லாம் தெரிகிறதே. நான் கொஞ்சம் ஆடித்தான் போனேன்.

“ஆமா… அதுவும் உண்டு… என்னோட clients க்கே புரியறதில்லை இதெல்லாம்… I am amazed…”.

அட்றா அட்றா. அண்ணன் ஃபார்முக்கு வர்ற மாதிரி இருக்கு.

ரொம்பவே வெட்கப்பட்டாள்.

“இல்ல… அது… என் friend ஒரு Digital Agency ல வேல பாக்கறா… அதான்…”

“Still… கலக்கிட்டீங்க… ஆ… By the way, உங்க பேரு?”

“ஆண்ட்ரியா…”

“வாவ்…. வித்தியாசமான பேர்…”

“தேங்க்ஸ்…” என்னவொரு புன்னகை. இப்படி ஒரு அழகியை முழுக்கை அணிந்த உடையிலா பார்க்க வேண்டும். ஹ்ம்.

“என் பேரு கேக்க மாட்டீங்களா? வெங்கீ…”

“எனக்கு தெரியுமே… அப்பா கூப்பிட்டாங்களே….”

“ஓ…. Smart….”

மறுபடி புன்னகை. எப்ப்புடீ…!

“இங்கே எங்க தங்கியிருக்கீங்க?”

“என் கஸின் வீட்ல, கோபாலபுரத்துல…”

அப்புறம் என்ன!. பேசினோம், பேசினோம்… பேசிக்கொண்டேயிருந்தோம், இரவு முழுவதும். அவ்வப்போது நான் போய் அப்பா சரியாக தூங்குகிராறா என்றும், அவள் போய் யாராவது casualty யில் இருக்கிறர்களா என்று பார்த்த நேரம் தவிர – ஒரே கடலை தான். Vindaloo restaurant போய் ஒரு காப்பி வேறு.

பல கடலைகளை வறுத்தவனாயினும், இது வித்தியாசமானதாகத்தான் இருந்தது. இவ்வளவு Smart ஆன பெண்ணை நான் பார்த்ததில்லை. Issac Asimov பற்றி, Singularity பற்றி, மருதநாயகம் பற்றி, Roshomon பற்றி என்று எனக்கும் தெரியாத பல விஷயங்களை பேசினாள். BE-MBA வகையறாவைத்தவிர மற்றவர்களுக்கு அவ்வளவு ‘போதாது’ என்ற என் கருத்தை தவிடு பொடியாக்கினாள்.

முதல் நாள் வெறும் ஈர்ப்பாக இருந்தது, பின்னர் பேச வேண்டும் என்ற ஆர்வமாக மாறியது, இப்போது அதையெல்லாம் தாண்டி வேறு ஒரு கட்டத்திற்கு செல்வது போல் இருந்தது. வெறும் 5 மணி நேரப்பேச்சு தான். ஆனால், இப்போதும் பல Arrange திருமணங்களில், ஒரு 1 மணி நேரம் மட்டும் பேசிதானே முடிவெடுக்கிறார்கள்?

விடிகாலை ஐந்து மணிக்கு அவளுக்கு வேலை வந்து விட்டது. நான் ரூமுக்கு சென்று படுத்துக்கொண்டேன். ஆறு மணிக்கு காப்பி வந்தது. அப்பா தான் கலந்து விட்டு என்னை எழுப்பினார். நான் இரவு முழுதும் குரட்டை விட்டதாகம் தன்னால் தூங்கவே முடியவில்லை என்றும் சொன்னார்.

7 மணிக்கு தம்பி வந்தான் என்னை விடுவிக்க. நான் கிளம்பினேன். பயங்கரமாக மழை பெய்தது. பார்க்கிங்கிலிருந்து காரை எடுக்க போன போது ஆண்டனியும் ஆண்ட்ரியாவும் பைக்கை வைத்துக்கொண்டு நின்றிருந்தார்கள். மழையினால் எனக்கு நன்மை.

ஆண்டனி என்னைப்பார்த்து புன்னகைத்தான்.

“சர்ஜரி ஆச்சா சார்?”

“ஆச்சு பாஸ்… நீங்க insurance எல்லாம் clear பண்ணிட்டா 2 நாள்ல கிளம்பலாம்னு டாக்டர் சொன்னாரு”

“ஆயிடும் சார்… Don’t Worry பண்ணாதீங்க”

தங்கை அந்த போடு போடுகிறாள். அண்ணன் மொக்கையாக ‘Don’t worry பண்ணாதீங்க’ என்கிறான்.

என்னை தெரியாதது போலவே நின்றிருந்தாள் அவள். பெண்களை நம்பவேகூடாது.

“இது என் sister சார், இங்கேயே physio வா இருக்கா”

“ஹலோ… பாத்தேன் நேத்தி.. அப்பாவுக்கு exercise சொல்லி குடுக்க வந்தாங்க” எனக்கும் இரவு முழுதும் போட்ட கடலையை பற்றி சொல்ல இஷ்டமில்லை.

“ஹலோ” என்றாள் அவளும் ஏதோ மூன்றாவது மனிதனிடம் பேசுவது போல.

“ஆண்டனி, நான் வேணா உங்கள drop பண்றனே…”

“ஹ்ம்ம்… வேணாம் சார்…. அப்பறம் பைக் இங்கயே தங்கிடும், சாயங்காலம் பஸ் புடிக்கனும்…”

“…”

“எங்க போறீங்க நீங்க?”

“கேகே நகர்…” என்றேன் வாய் கூசாமல்.

“ஆண்ட்றியா, நீ வேணா போறியா சார் கூட? இந்த ஒரு வாரம் சளி கிளி புடிக்காம பாத்துக்கோமா…”

அவள் முகம் சுருங்கியது. ரொம்ப யோசித்தாள். டூ மச். ராத்திரி முழுதும் அப்படி பேசினாளே, இப்போது என்னவோ இப்படி முகம் சுருக்கிகிறாள். நான் கிளம்பினேன். நான் காரை கொண்டு வருவதற்குள் அவன் அவளை சம்மதிக்க வைத்தான். என் அருகில் அமர்ந்து கொண்டாள். சிறிது நேரம் எதுவும் பேசவில்லை.

“ஏன் கேகே நகர் போறதா சொன்னீங்க?”

“நீ ஏன் என்னைத்தெரியாத மாதிரியே நடிச்ச?”

இருவரும் சிரித்தோம். நீங்க என்பது நீ ஆனதை நீங்கள் கவனித்திருக்கலாம். என்னவோ பல நாட்கள் பழகிய ஒரு நண்பியுடன் பேசுவதைப்போல இருந்தது. அவள் வீட்டின் முன் காரை நிறுத்தினேன். இறங்கிக்கொண்டாள். என்னைப்பார்த்து வசீகரமான ஒரு புன்னகை செய்து,

“Thanks” என்றாள்.

“…”

“Bye…”

“ஆண்ட்ரியா…”

“….”

“நீ ரொம்ப அழகா இருக்க…”

முகம் சுருங்கியது. உடனே சுதாரித்துக்கொண்டு சிரித்தாள். காரைச்சுற்றிக்கொண்டு என் அருகே வந்தாள்.

“வெங்கீ…”

“….”

“Thanks a lot… நான் ஒன்னு சொல்லனும் உங்க கிட்ட… நேத்தியே சொல்லியிருக்கணும், ஆனா வேற பேச்சு ஸ்வாரஸ்யத்துல இத சொல்லல ”

“…”

“I am engaged… இன்னிக்கு ராத்திரி தான் எனக்கு கடைசி Duty…. Next week, கேரளாவுல எனக்கு கல்யாணம்…”

அந்த ஆண்டனி அதனால் தான் ஒரு வாரம் சளி பிடிக்கக்கூடாது என்றானா?

“…”

“ஹலோ… கேக்கறீங்களா?”

“ஓ…. yes yes… Congratulations…”

“Thank you…”

“யாரு அந்த lucky guy?”

“தாமஸ்… என் அண்ணனோட ஃப்ரெண்ட்… துபாய்ல இருக்காரு… ஒரு ஆஸ்திரேலியன் கம்பனில logistics manager ஆ இருக்காரு…”

தெரியும் எனக்கு. இந்த அண்ணன் தான் உலை வைப்பான் என்று.

“ஓ… that is great…”

தலையை குனிந்து கொண்டு புன்னகைத்தாள்.

“சரி நான் கிளம்பறேன்…”

“Bye”.

என்னை விட்டு போய்விட்டாள். Literally!! ஒரே இரவில் வாழ்க்கை ஒரு முழு வட்டம் அடித்துவிட்டது போல இருந்தது.

இப்போது: 10 ஜூன் 2009 மாலை, 11 ஜூன்.

“என்னடா தூங்கறயா?”

ஆண்ட்ரியாவின் நினைவுகளில் மூழ்கியிருந்த எனக்கு, இப்போது 2009 ல் ஹெர்னியா சர்ஜரிக்காக வந்திருக்கிறோம் என்பதேலாம் பிடிபடவே கொஞ்ச நேரம் ஆனது. சாயங்காலம் ஆகியிருந்தது. தம்பி திரும்பியே வந்துவிட்டான்.

“டேய்… Are you OK? சாப்டியா?”

“சாப்ட்டேன் டா…”

“சரி நீ அம்மாவ கூட்டிண்டு சீக்கரம் வீட்டுக்கு போய் தூங்கிடு… நான் தங்கறேன் ராத்திரி…”

“சரி..”

“அப்பாடா… இப்போவும் வயசு பத்தாதுன்னு சொல்லிடுவயோன்னு பயந்தேன்…” என்று சிரித்தான்

அம்மாவை அழைத்துக்கொண்டு வீட்டுக்கு போன போது, ஆண்ட்ரியாவும் ஆண்டனியும் ஆட்டோவிலிருந்து இறங்கி மியாட்டுக்குள் செல்வது போலிருந்தது. பிரமை என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டேன். என் மேலேயே எனக்கு ரொம்ப கோபம் வந்தது. அப்போது அவ்வளவு கோழையாக இருந்திருக்கக்கூடாது. ஒரு சிறு உதவிதானே கேட்டாள் அவள் – யோசித்து முடிவெடுக்கலாம் என்று தான் சொன்னாள். மொபைல் தொலையாமல் இருந்திருந்தால்?

நாளை காலை சர்ஜரி, மாலையே டிஸ்சார்ஜ் என்றெல்லாம் சொல்லிக்கொண்டே வந்தாள் அம்மா. ‘ம்’ மட்டும் சொல்லிக்கொண்டு வந்தேன்.

“உனக்கு என்னமோ ஆயிடுத்து…” என்ற போது கூட ஒன்றும் சொல்லவில்லை நான்.

அன்று இரவு நன்றாக தூங்கிவிட்டேன்.

அடுத்த நாள் காலை அப்பாவை சர்ஜரிக்கு அழைத்துக்கொண்டு போனார்கள். தம்பியும் வீட்டுக்குப்போய் குளித்துவிட்டு திரும்ப வந்துவிடுவதாக சொன்னான். அம்மாவும் போய் முதல் நாளைப்போலவே ரூமிலும் கார் பார்க்கிங்கிலும் உட்கார்ந்து கொண்டோம்.

மறுபடி பழைய ஞாபகங்கள்.

அப்போது: 23-24 ஜூன் 2007

அவள் ‘I am engaged’ என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு போன பிறகு நொந்து போனேன். நாள் முழுதும் தூக்கம் வர வில்லை. அம்மாவும் தம்பியும் அன்று பகல் முழுதும் இருந்ததால், அன்றிரவும் நானே இருக்க வேண்டியுருந்தது. நான் குறட்டை விடுவதாக சொன்னாலும் அப்பாவுக்கும் தம்பியை விட நான் இருந்தால் கொஞ்சம் நிம்மதி.

இரவு பத்து மணிக்கு வந்தாள். எனக்கு அவள் முகத்தை பார்க்க பிடிக்கவில்லை. வெறுமே புன்னகைத்தேன். ஏனோ ஏமாற்றப்பட்டதாக உணர்ந்தேன். அப்பாவும் exercises சீக்கிரமே செய்து முடித்தார். அவளும் போய்விட்டாள்.

அப்பாவும் தூங்கிய பிறகு நானும் தூங்க முயற்சித்தேன். முடியவில்லை. வெளியே வந்தேன். அதே சோஃபாவில் அவள் உட்கார்ந்திருந்தாள்.

“வாங்க… காணுமே, தூங்கிட்டீங்களோன்னு நெனச்சேன்…”

அரை-புன்னகை சிந்தினேன். நெனப்பீங்க டீ… ராத்திரி பொழுது போகலன்னா நாங்க வேணுமா கடல போட… அப்புறம் காத்தால ஆனதும் துபாய் போறேன்… ஆப்பரிக்கா போறேன்னு ஆப்படிக்கறதுக்கா.

“வாங்க உட்காருங்க”

வேண்டா வெறுப்பாக உட்கார்ந்தேன். ஆனால் என் வெறுப்பை அவளிடம் காட்ட விரும்பவில்லை. அவள் ஒன்றும் என்னை ஏமாற்றவில்லையே, நானேதான் நிறைய கற்பனை செய்து விட்டேன். இன்று பேசவில்லையென்றால், Cheap ஆக நினைப்பாள்.

பல வழக்கமான Arm-Chair அரசியல் பேச்சுக்களுக்கு பிறகு அவள் தன் குடும்பத்தைப்பற்றி சொன்னாள்.

அப்பா பல வருடங்களுக்கு முன்னலேயேயே போய்விட்டாராம். குடித்துவிட்டு ஸ்கூட்டர் ஓட்டி லாரியில் அடி பட்டு இறந்து விட்டாராம். நரம்பியல் நோயால் அம்மா பாதிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளாராம். அண்ணண்தான் படிக்கவைத்ததாம். மொத்த குடிம்ப பாரத்தையும் 17 வயதிலிருந்து சுமக்கிறானாம். ஒரு சின்ன ஆங்கில பிழைக்காக அவனைப்போய் மட்டமாக நினைத்தோமே என்று வருத்தப்பட்டேன். பல நாட்கள் பல கம்பனிகளில் பல விதமான வேலைகள் செய்துவிட்டு இப்போதுதான் கொஞ்ச நாட்களாக பணக்கஷ்டம் இல்லாமல் வாழ்க்கையை ஓட்டுகிறானாம்.

துபாயில் இருக்கும் தாமஸ் தான் நிறைய உதவிகள் செய்கிறானாம். இப்போது கூட ஆண்டனி தனியாக தொழில் தொடங்க உதவுவதாக சொல்லியிருக்கிறானாம். அவனுக்காக ஆண்டனி உயிரைக்கூட கொடுப்பார்களாம். அடடா, இப்படி ஒரு நட்புக்கதையை கேட்டு எவ்வளவு நாட்கள் ஆகின்றன என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டேன். தப்பாக நினைக்க வேண்டாம். எனக்கு நிறைய நண்பர்கள் உண்டு, ஆனால் இப்படி உயிரைக்கொடுக்கிறேன் என்பதெல்லாம் டூ மச்சாகத்தான் நினைத்திருக்கிறேன். அதெல்லாம் சினிமாவில் தான் சரி வரும் என்பது என் கணிப்பு.

முதல் நாள் பேசும்போது நேரம் போனதே தெரியவில்லை. ஆனால் அன்றிரவு ரொம்ப மெதுவாக போனது. அவ்வப்போது கொட்டாவி விட்டேன், மணி பார்த்துக்கொண்டேன். அவளோ விடுவதாக இல்லை – ஏதோ பேசிக்கொண்டேயிருந்தாள். காப்பி வாங்கித்தந்தாள். அவள் ஏதோ சொல்ல வருவது போலவும் ஆனால் சொல்ல முடியாமல் தவிப்பது போலவும் இருந்தது.

சிறிது நேரம் எதுவும் பேசவேயில்லை. நான் அப்படியே லேசாக கண் அயர்ந்தேன். சட்டென்று

“வெங்கீ” என்றாள்.

மணி ஐந்து ஆகியிருந்தது.

“சாரி… அப்டியே கண்ணு இழுத்துடிச்சி…”

“பரவயில்லை… ஒன்னு கேக்கலாமா?”

“…??”

“உங்களுக்கு என்ன பிடிச்சிருக்கா?”

“??… என்னது??”

“சொல்லுங்க வெங்கீ… புடிச்சிருக்கா?”

“அது… புடிச்சிருக்கு… ஆனா…. நீ நெனக்கற மாதி்ரி….”

“என்ன நீங்க புரிஞ்சிக்கவே இல்லையா…. நேத்தி ராத்திரி முழுக்க நான் சொல்ல வந்தத நீங்க புரிஞ்சிக்கவேயில்ல…”

“இல்ல…. அது…, புரிஞ்சது… இப்போதான் கொஞ்சம் தூங்கிட்டேன்… verbatim ஆ இல்லாட்டா கூட I think I can repeat whatever you said…” என்று சிரித்தேன்.

ஆனால் அவள் அழத்தொடங்கியிருந்தாள். எனக்கு ஒன்றும் புரியவில்லை. ஏன் அழுகிறாள். நான் ரொம்ப aloof ஆக இருந்துவிட்டேனா.

“ஆண்ட்ரியா… என்ன ஆச்சு…. I am so sorry….”

“வெங்கீ… எனக்கு இந்த கல்யாணம்… தாமஸ புடிக்கல…”

“….”

“அவன் இங்க இருக்கும்போதே நெறைய பொண்ணூங்களோட சுத்தினான்… அங்க போய் என்னல்லாம் பண்றானோ…”

“ஆண்டனி கிட்ட சொன்னியா?”

“சொன்னேன்… அவன் சொல்றான், தாமஸ் இப்போ திருந்திட்டானாம்… கொஞ்சம் adjust பண்ணிக்கோ அப்டீங்கறான்”

“…”

“எனக்கு தெரியும், அவன் திருந்த மாட்டான்… அவன பொருத்த வரைக்கும் பொண்ணுங்கறவ ஒரு commodity மாதிரி… அவன் ஒரு chauvinistic dog… அங்க போனா நான் ஒரு அடிமையாத்தான் இருக்கனும்…”

“கமான் ஆண்ட்ரியா… நீ ரொம்ப யோசிக்கற… அவன் நெஜமா திருந்திட்டானோ என்னமோ…. Every male is chauvinistic sometime or the other…”

“இல்ல வெங்கீ… உங்களுக்கு தெரியாது… அவன் எங்க அண்ணனுக்கு காசு குடுக்கறதே எனக்காகத்தான்… I am being bought…” என்று விசும்பி விசும்பி அழுதாள்.

“இல்ல… நீ தப்பா புரிஞ்சுகிட்டு இருக்க… அப்படி இருந்தா உங்க அண்ணன் சும்மா இருப்பானா?”

“ஆண்டனி நல்லவன் தான்… ஆனா, தாமஸ் கிட்ட எப்படி பேசறதுன்னு பயம்…”

“பேசாம நீ வேற யாரையாவது லவ் பண்றன்னு சொல்லிடறது தானே…”

“அதான் இன்னிக்கு காலைல யோசிச்சோம்… ஆனா, யாரைன்னு தாமஸ் கேட்டுட்டா என்ன சொல்றதுன்னு தெரியல… அதான் ஆண்டனி பயப்படுறான்”

“…”

“அதான் உங்கள கேட்டேன்… என்ன பிடிச்சிருக்கான்னு…”

“What??” சந்தோஷப்படுவதா என்று தெரியவில்லை. ஒரு வித மிரட்சியிலிருந்தேன்.

“தப்பா நெனைக்காதீங்க வெங்கீ… நான் இப்போ சந்தர்ப்பவாதியா பேசறேன்னு நீங்க நெனைக்கலாம்… ஆனா, நெஜமா.. நெஜமா உங்கள மாதிரி ஒரு ஆளை நான் முன்னாடியே மீட் பண்ணியிருந்தா நான் கண்டிப்பா லவ் பண்ணியிருப்பேன்…”

“…..”

“நீங்க என்ன லவ் பண்ணனும்னு சொல்லல… We seem to have so many things in common… இல்லன்னா நேரம் போனதே தெரியாம நேத்து ராத்திரி பேசியிருக்க முடியாது… சத்தியமா சொல்றேன்… I have never had a wonderful discussion like that before… இதுக்கு அப்புறமும் வருமான்னு தெரியல…” மறுபடி குரல் உடையத்துவங்கியிருந்தது.

“…”

“ஒன்னும் சொல்ல மாட்டீங்களா வெங்கீ…”

“என்ன சொல்றதுன்னே தெரியல… இப்போ அப்பா இங்க இருக்காரு…”

“புரியுது வெங்கீ… நீங்க உடனே முடிவு பண்ண வேண்டாம்… நான் ஆண்டனி கிட்ட ஏற்கனவே பேசிட்டேன்… இப்போதைக்கு, ஒரே ஒரு வாட்டி நீங்க….”

ட்ரிங் ட்ரிங் ட்ரிங் ட்ரிங்

“அப்பா கூப்படறாரு… நான் இதோ வந்துடறேன்…”

அப்பா மூச்சு விட முடியவில்லை என்றார். உடனே ந்ர்ஸுக்கு சொல்லி விட்டு, டாக்டர் சொன்னது போல அப்பாவை உட்கார வைத்தேன். டாக்டர்கள் வந்து பார்த்துவிட்டு ஒன்றும் பயப்பட வேண்டாம், திரும்ப முடியாமல் படுத்திருப்பதால் இப்படி ஆகிவிட்டது என்றார்கள். அவர்கள் சிறிது மூச்சு பயிற்சி செய்ய சொல்லிவிட்டு வேடிக்கை பார்த்தார்கள். ஆண்ட்ரியா என்னை சைகை பாஷையிலேயே அழைத்து 10 மணிக்கு ஃபோன் செய்ய சொன்னாள். நான் அவளை வெயிட் செய்யச்சொன்னேன். டாக்டர்கள் எல்லாம் போன பின், வெளியே வந்து அவளைத்தேடினேன். ஆனால் எங்குமே கிடைக்கவில்லை. பார்க்கிங்கில் பார்த்தேன், அங்கே ஆண்டனியின் பைக்கும் இல்லை. நான் திரும்ப ரூமுக்கு வந்தேன் – அப்பா காப்பி கலந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்.

இப்போது: 11 ஜூன்.

“என்னடா.. மறுபடி சிந்தனை செய் மனமேன்னு ஒக்காந்துட்டியா?” தம்பி வந்துவிட்டான்.

“…”

“நீ ஃபோன் பண்ணா எடுக்கவே மாட்டியா? அம்மா 10 தரம் பண்ணியிருக்கா…”

“ஓ…” ஆமாம், பல மிஸ்டு கால்கள்.

“ஆபரேஷன் ஆச்சாம்… ஒன்னும் ப்ரச்சன இல்லையாம்…. இன்னும் கொஞ்ச நேரத்துலயே ரூமுக்கு வந்துடுவாளாம்… சாயங்காலம் கிளம்ப வேண்டியது தான்..”

“குட் குட்… Insurance எல்லாம் ஆச்சா?”

“உன்ன தான டா பாக்க சொன்னேன்… பாக்கலயா? காத்தால்லேந்து என்ன பண்ற?”

“ஓ… சாரி டா… நீ பாக்கறன்னு மறந்துட்டேன்… இதோ பாத்துட்டு வந்துடறேன்…”

“சரி.. கால் பண்ணு… நான் அப்டியே ஏமாத்திட்டு உள்ள போக முடியுதான்னு பாக்கறன்… நான் ஃபோன் பண்ணா கொஞ்சம் எடு அத”

Insurance காரனிடம் பெரிய க்யூ. இப்போது யாருமே கை காசை போட்டு மருத்துவம் செய்பதில்லை போலிருக்கிறது. அதுவும் இங்கே வருபவர்கள் கண்டிப்பாக insurance இல்லாமல் வர முடியாது. தமிழ்நாடு அரசும் இப்போது எல்லா அரசு ஊழியர்களுக்கும் insurance வசதி கொடுப்பதால், வழக்கத்தை விட கூட்டம் அதிகம்.

க்யூவில் நிற்கும்போது பார்த்தேன். தூரத்தில் ஆண்ட்ரியா, ஆண்டனி போல இருவர் நின்றிருந்தனர். இது பிரமை போல தெரியவில்லை. இந்த வேலை முடிந்தவுடன் கிட்டத்தில் போய் பார்த்து விட வேண்டியது தான். ஆனால் அதற்குள் அவர்கள் ஏதோ ஒரு அறையினுள் சென்று விட்டனர்.

அந்த மொபைல் திருடன் மட்டும் கையில் கிடைத்தானென்றால், கொலையே செய்து விடுவேன் இப்போது. எவ்வளவு கஷ்டங்கள் அதற்கு பிறகு. மறுபடி அந்த நாள் ஞாபகத்திற்கு வந்தது.

அப்போது: 24 ஜூன் 2007 உம் அதற்குப்பிறகும்

அவள் பாட்டுக்கு சைகையிலேயே ஃபோன் செய் என்று சொல்லிவிட்டு போய்விட்டாள். எனக்கு என்ன செய்வதென்றே தெரியவில்லை. அவள் என்ன எதிர்பார்க்கிறாள்? எனக்கு அவளை பிடித்திருக்கிறது தான். ஆனால், இன்றேவா கல்யாணம் செய்ய முடியும்? நான் போய் ஆண்டனியிடம் பேச வேண்டுமா? இல்லை தாமஸிடமேவே? தாமஸ் தாவாங்கட்டையிலேயே ஒன்று விட்டால் என்ன ஆவேன்? இது போன்ற சமயங்களில், கார்த்திக்கிடம் பேசி விடுவது நல்லது. என் நண்பன். உயிரையெல்லாம் கொடுக்க மாட்டான். ஆனால், நல்ல அட்வைஸ் கொடுப்பான்.

வீட்டுக்குப்போய் குளித்துவிட்டு அவனுக்கு ஃபோன் செய்ய வெளியே ஓடினேன். வீட்டுக்குள்ளா, அதுவும் பெரியம்மா வீட்டுக்குள்ளா இதெல்லாம் பேச முடியும்? முதலில் அவனிடம் பேசிவிட்டு அப்புறம் அவளிடம் பேசலாம்.

கடந்த இரண்டு இரவுகளாக நடந்தவற்றை சொல்ல முற்பட்டேன். ஆனால் முடிக்க விடாமல் கிண்டல் செய்து கொண்டேயிருந்தான்.

“மச்சி… மல்லூ… physiotherpaist வேறங்கற… ராத்திரி முழுக்க massage தானா? நீ கலக்கு டா”

“டேய்… சொல்றத கேளுடா… matter serious…”

தடாலென்று ஒரு அடி. கீழே விழுந்தேன். நான் சுதாரிப்பதற்குள், என் கையில் இருந்த மொபைலை எடுத்துக்கொண்டு ஒரு யமஹா பறந்தது. அப்படியே மயங்கினேன்.

கண் விழித்தபோது பெரியம்மா விட்டில் இருந்தேன். பக்கத்தில் பெரியம்மா.

“என்ன சார், நன்னா தூங்கியாச்சா?” என்றாள். என்னை சார் என்று தான் அழைப்பாள் சின்ன வயதிலிருந்தே.

“பெரிம்மா…”

“பயப்படாத டா… ஒன்னும் இல்ல ஒனக்கு… லேசா அடி… ரெண்டு நாள் ஆஸ்பத்ரில தூங்காததுனால மயங்கிட்ட…”

“யாரு அடிச்சா?”

“மொபைல் திருடனுங்க தான்… சீஃப் மினிஸ்டர் இருக்கற எடம்னு பேர்தான்… ஆனா போன வாரம் மட்டும் 10 மொபைல் போயிருக்கு… இதே மாதிரி ரோட்ல பேசிண்டே இருக்கறச்சே பைக்ல வந்து கொண்டு போயிடறானுங்க… கடங்காரனுங்க”

“அம்மா?”

“ஆஸ்பத்திரிக்கு போயிருக்கா… இன்னிக்கே டிஸ்சார்ஜாம்… கொஞ்ச நேரத்துல அப்பாவையும் கூட்டிண்டு வந்துடுவா…”

“ஓ…”  சட்டென்று ஆண்ட்ரியாவைப்பற்றி ஞாபகம் வந்தது. “மணி என்ன பெரிம்மா? பத்து ஆச்சா?”

“இல்ல இப்போதான் 7 ஆறது…”

நான் கேட்டது காலை 10. அவள் சொன்னது மாலை 7.

“ஷிட்… சாரி…. பெரிம்மா, என் மொபைல் கெடச்சுதா?”

“இல்ல.. தூக்கிண்டு ஓடிட்டானுங்க… உன்ன உள்ள கொண்டு வருவோமா இல்ல அவனுங்க பின்னாடி ஓடுவோமா?”

“….”

“அம்மா சொன்னா 40 ஆயிரம் ஃபோனு அதுன்னு… என்ன பண்றது… உனக்கு ஒன்னும் ஆகலயேன்னு சந்தோஷப்பட்டுக்கு வேண்டியது தான்… பக்கத்து தெருல யாருக்கு காது அறுந்து போச்சாம்”

நான் ஃபோனுக்காக வருந்தவில்லை, அதில் இருந்த ஆண்ட்ரியாவின் நம்பருக்காக என்று எப்படி சொல்லுவது. சிறிது நேரத்தில் அப்பா-அம்மா-தம்பி எல்லோரும் வந்து விட்டார்கள்.

அடுத்த சில நாட்கள் என்னை வீட்டைவிட்டு வெளியே போக விட வில்லை. கார்த்திக்கின் நம்பரும் கிடைக்கவில்லை. பெரியம்மா வீட்டில் internet வசதியும் இல்லை. எனக்கு இதைப்பற்றி அவர்களிடம் பேச ரொம்ப பயமாக இருந்தது. என்ன நினைப்பார்கள் – இரண்டு நாள் ராத்திரி அப்பாவுடன் ரூமில் இல்லாமல் கூத்தடித்துவிட்டு இப்போது வேறு அவளை தேடிப்போகிறேன் என்று நினைப்பார்கள். எனக்கே பயமாக இருந்தது. அவள் சொன்னது எல்லாம் உண்மையா? என்னிடம் பொய் சொல்லி என்ன கிடைக்கும் அவளுக்கு? “பச்சைக்கிளி முத்துச்சரம்” படம் போல ஏதாவது இருந்தால்? ‘அவள் சொல்வது உண்மையாக இருந்திருந்தால்’  என்ற எண்ணமும் வந்தது. ஆனால் கோழையாக இருந்தேன்.

மூன்று நாட்கள் கழித்து வெளியே சென்று கார்திக்கிற்கு மெயில் செய்தேன். சென்னையில் இருக்கும் மற்றொரு நண்பனை என் வீட்டுக்கு வர வழைத்தேன். அவனுடன் வெளியே செல்வதாக சொல்லி மியாட் சென்றேன். அங்கே ஆண்ட்ரியாவின் நம்பரை வாங்கி முயற்சித்தேன் – ஆஃப் ஆகவே இருந்தது. ஆண்டனி நம்பர் கிடைக்கவில்லை. நேராக அவள் வீட்டுக்கே சென்று விடலாம் என்று நினைத்து அங்கே போனேன். ஆனால் பூட்டு தான் தொங்கியது. அக்கம்-பக்கத்தோருக்கு எதுவும் தெரியவில்லை. அவள் திருமணம் பற்றி கூட தெரியவில்லை. அது தெரிந்தால், கேரளா செல்லலாம் என்று பார்த்தேன்.

நொந்து போனேன். சில நாட்கள் கழித்து பெங்களூர் சென்று விட்டேன். பல நாட்கள் அவள் நம்பரை முயற்சி செய்து கொண்டேயிருந்தேன். அவ்வப்போது சென்னையில் இருக்கும் நண்பனைவிட்டு அவள் விட்டுக்கு சென்று பார்க்க சொல்வேன். இரண்டு மாதங்கள் கழித்து, அவர்கள் காலி செய்துவிட்டார்கள், வேறு யாரோ இருக்கிறார்கள் என்று சொன்னான்.

‘10 மணிக்கு ஃபோன் செய்’ என்று சைகையில் சொன்ன அந்த பாவமான முகம் மட்டும் பல நாட்கள் கனவில் வரும். தாமஸ் உண்மையிலேயே திருந்தியிருக்க வேண்டும், அவள் சந்தோஷமாக இருக்க வேண்டும் என்று வேண்டிக்கொள்வேன். என் கோழைத்தனத்தை நினைத்து நொந்து கொள்வேன். கொஞ்சம் கொஞ்சமாக அவளை மறந்து போனேன் – அப்பாவுக்கு ஹெர்னியா இருப்பது தெரிய வந்தது வரை. அப்பா மியாட்டுக்கு தான் மறுபடி போக வேண்டும் என்று சொல்லிவிட்டார். அதனால், பழைய ஞாபகங்கள் அனைத்தும் வரும் மாதிரி ஆகி விட்டது. மியாட்டின் எந்த சுவற்றை பார்த்தாலும், அந்த இரண்டு இரவுகள் தான் ஞாபகம் வந்தன.

இப்போது: 11 ஜூன் மாலை.

அனைத்து ஃபார்மாலிடீஸும் முடிந்து discharge summary வாங்க reception ல் நின்று கொண்டிருந்தேன். தம்பி-அப்பா-அம்மா எல்லோரும் ரூமில் காத்துக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

அப்போது, நான் காலையில் பார்த்த அந்த இருவர் வெளியே ஆட்டோவுக்காக நின்று கொண்டிருந்தார்கள் – அவர்கள், ஆண்டனியும், ஆண்ட்ரியாவும் தான். ஆண்ட்ரியா உண்டாகியிருந்தாள். கல்யாணம் ஆகியிருக்க வேண்டும். ஏனோ கிட்டே போய் பேச வேண்டும் என்று தோன்றவில்லை. அவள் நன்றாக இருக்கிறாள் என்ற விஷயமே போதுமானதாக இருந்தது. கிட்டே போனால், வேறு ஏதாவது தெரியவந்து விடுமோ என்ற பயமும் வந்தது. ஆண்டனி ஃபோனில் பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தான். இன்னும் பெருத்திருந்தான். பிஸினஸ் நன்றாக போகும் என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டேன்.

அவள் என்னைப்பார்த்துவிட்டாள். மெலிதாக புன்னகை செய்தாள். அதில் சோகம் கலந்திருப்பதாக எனக்கு ஒரு பிரமை. ஒருவேளை அடிமை மாதிரி தான் நடத்துகிறானோ தாமஸ்! புருவம் உயர்த்தி எப்படி இருக்கிறாய் என்றாள். நான் தலையை ஆட்டி புன்னகைத்தேன் – அதில் நிஜமாலுமே குற்ற உணர்ச்சி ஒளிந்திருந்தது. அவள் வயிற்றைசுட்டிக்காட்டி கையை ‘take care’ என்பது போல உயர்த்தினேன். அதற்குள் அவர்கள் ஆட்டோ வந்துவிட்டது. எனக்கு கண்களாலேயே Bye சொல்லிவிட்டு ஏறிக்கொண்டேன்.

பேசிக்கொண்டே ஏறிய ஆண்டனி கீழே தவற விட்டான், என் பழைய மொபைலை.

"ஹலோ, சொல்லுண்ணா..."

"டேய் பிஸியா இருக்கியா?"

"இல்லண்ணா சொல்லு.."

சுதாகர் அண்ணா. என் பெரியம்மா மகன். அவன் வீட்டு கம்ப்யூட்டர் வேலை செய்யாவிட்டால் கண்டிப்பாக எனக்கு ஃபோன் செய்வான்.

"உங்க ஆஃபீஸ்ல ஷைலஜான்னு யாரானு பொண்ணு வேல பண்றாளா?"

"தெரியலண்ணா... மொத்தம் ரெண்டாயிரம் பேரு வேல பாக்கறோம் இங்க"

"அப்டியா? ஒரு நிமிஷம் இரு"

யாரோ ஏதோ சொல்கிறார்கள் அவனிடம். அதற்குள் நான் Exchange Server Directory ல் தேடினேன். யாரும் அந்த பெயரில் இல்லை.

"நன்னா டான்ஸ் ஆடுவாளாமாம் டா"

"ஓஹோ... ஆனா அந்த பேர்ல யாரும் இல்லண்ணா.. எந்த ஆஃபீஸன்னு ஒழுங்கா கேளு உன் friend கிட்ட... ஹாஹா"

"இல்லையா?" என் ஜோக் பிடிக்கவில்லை அவனுக்கு.

"ஆமாண்ணா... directory ல தேடியாச்சு"

"அது வீட்டு பேராம் டா... ஆஃபீஸ் பேரு வேற போல... ஆஃபீஸ் பேரு என்ன சார்?"

"அண்ணா, நக்கல் பண்றியா? directory ல வீ்ட்டு பேரு, Boy Friend கூப்படற செல்ல பேரு எல்லாம் இருக்காது... எதுக்கு அந்த பொண்ண தேடற இப்போ?"

"உனக்கு பாக்கத்தான் டா"

"எக்ஸ்க்யூஸ் மீ... என்ன நடக்குது இங்க... இப்போவே அம்மா கிட்ட பேசறேன்..."

"டேய் சும்மா பாருடா... மொபைல் டிவிஷன்லதான் இருக்காளாம்... உன் கோர்ஸ் முடிச்சிட்டு கல்யாணம் வச்சிக்கலாம்..."

"அண்ணா வம்பு பண்ணாத... சரி நான் அப்புறம் பேசறன்..." என்று உடனே கட் செய்தேன்.

இந்த relatives தொந்தரவு தாங்க முடியவில்லை இப்போதெல்லாம். 28 வயது ஆகிவிட்டதாம். அதனால் கல்யாணம் செய்ய வேண்டுமாம். என் career கனவுகள் என்ன ஆவது? நான் படிக்கும் weekend MS என்ன ஆவது? அம்மா இப்போதெல்லாம் direct ஆக pressure போடுவதில்லை. இப்படி யார் மூலமாகவாவது பேசவேண்டியது.

அன்று இரவு வீட்டுக்கு போய் பெரிய சண்டை போட்டேன். என்னை சமாதானம் செய்தாள் அம்மா. ரொம்ப நல்ல இடம். சுதாகர் அண்ணாவின் ஆஃபீஸில் ஷைலஜாவின் அப்பா வேலை பார்க்கிறாராம். எப்படியாவது எனக்கு முடித்துவிடவேண்டும் என்று ஆசைப்படுகிறாராம். எனக்காக என்ன வேண்டுமானாலும் செய்வாராம். நம் இஷ்டம் போல் கல்யாணம் செய்து கொடுப்பாறாம்.

நான் மசியவில்லை. நான் கோர்ஸ் முடிப்பது. அது வரை அந்த பெண்ணுக்கு கல்யாணம் ஆகவில்லை என்றால் பார்த்துக்கொள்ளலாம் என்ற முடிவு எடுக்கப்பட்டது.

அன்று இரவு யார் அந்த ஷைலஜா என்று நான் நெடு நேரம் யோசித்தேன் என்பதை நான் இங்கே மறைக்க விரும்பவில்லை. அண்ணாவை ஆஃபீஸ் பெயரை சொல்லவிடாமல் தப்பு செய்துவிட்டோமே என்று வருத்தம் ஏற்பட்டது.

அது நடந்து ஒரு வாரத்திற்கு மேல் ஆகிவிட்டது. நானும் இதைப்பற்றி மறந்து விட்டிருந்தேன். ஒரு திங்கட்கிழமை. ஆஃபீஸில் பிஸியாக வேலை செய்துகொண்டிருந்தபோது "Please attend the BarCamp in IIM-B this weekend" என்று என் மேனேஜரிடமிருந்து mail. [Bar Camp - புதிதாக கம்பெனி துவங்குபவர்களின்
கூட்டம் - where entrepreneurs (& potentials) meet . Nothing to do with BAR] இருந்தது. அதற்கான registration செய்யும் வெப்சைட் வேலை செய்யாததால், என் நண்பன் ஸ்ரீதரை ஃபோனில் அழைத்தேன். அவன் தான் இம்முறை coordinate செய்கிறான்.

வெளிநாடு செல்லவிருப்பதால் அவன் வரவில்லையாம். ஆனால் எனக்கு சீட்டு போட்டுவிட்டதாக சொன்னான். அதைப்பற்றி பேசி முடித்தபின் திடீரென்று சொன்னான்.

"மச்சான்... நீ பயங்கர ஃபேமஸ் போல ஆஃபீஸ்ல?"

"நல்லாத்தான டா போய்க்கிட்டு இருந்தது. திடீர்னு ஏன் இந்த கொலை வெறி உனக்கு?"

"இல்லடா... கேள்விப்பட்டேன்... அதுவும் பொண்ணுங்க மத்தில ஊம் ஊம்...."

"என்னய வச்சி காமெடி கீமெடி பண்ணலயே? matterஅ சொல்லுடா ஃபூல்"

"இல்லடா.. ஷைலஜான்னு எனக்கு தெரிஞ்ச பொண்ணு இருக்கா... உன் புகழ் பேச ஆரம்பிச்சா, நிறுத்தாம பேசறா அவ"

"ஓஹோ...! என்னது!! ஷைலஜா வா? அது வீட்ல கூப்படற பேரா இருக்குமே?"

"ஆமாடா... ஸ்கூல்ல எல்லாம் அவளுக்கு வேற பேருன்னு நினைக்கறேன்"

"அவங்க அப்பா கூட இந்தியன் பேங்க்ல வேல பாப்பாறே?"

"ஆஹா, கலக்கற டா... உனக்கு தெரியுமா அவள?"

"தெரியாது டா... அவளுக்கு official name என்னடா?"

"நக்கல் பண்ணாதடா.. இவ்ளோ விஷயம் தெரியும்... ஆனா பேரு தெரியாதா?"

"அது வேற matter டா... சரி விடு... அப்புறம் என்ன news சொல்லு"

"ஒன்னும் இல்லை டா... மேற்கே நோக்கி பயணம் செய்யப்போறேன்... அங்க இருக்கற VC எவனாவது சிக்குவானான்னு பாத்து... அடுத்த Monday தான் வருவேன்"

"All the best டா... எப்படியாது funding வாங்கிடு... அப்புறம் என்ன உன் கம்பெனில CEO வா சேத்துக்கோ"

"உருப்பட்ட மாதிரி தான்... சரி, உன் கல்யாணம் எப்போ?"

"அய்யோ வீட்ல torture தாங்கல டா... கோர்ஸ் முடியட்டும்னா கேக்கமாட்டேங்கறாங்க"

"அதே கததான் இங்கயும்... ஆனா என் விஷயத்துல, மாப்ள கம்பெனி ஆரம்பிக்கறாருக்கு சொன்ன உடனே, பொண்ணோட அப்பா எல்லாம் ஓடிடுவாங்க.. so எனக்கு கவல இல்ல... அவங்களுக்கு உன்ன மாதிரி SHIT தான் வேணும்"

"SHIT ஆ?"

"Single, High Income, Techie டா"

"ஹாஹாஹா.... சரி டா மாப்ள... நீ ஊருக்கு நல்லபடியா போய்ட்டு வா... அப்புறம் பேசுவோம்...."

அதுற்குமேல் எனக்கு பொறுக்கவில்லை. யார் அந்த ஷைலஜா என்று பரபரத்தேன். அவள் அப்பாவோ எனக்காக என்ன வேண்டுமானாலும் செய்வாராம். இவளோ என்னைப்பற்றி புகழ் பாடுகிறாளாம். ஆனால் ஆஃபீஸில் அவளுக்கு என்ன பெயர் என்று எப்படி கண்டுபிடிப்பது? சுதாகர் அண்ணாவை கேட்கலாம். ஆனால் அவன் அம்மாவிடம் போட்டுகொடுத்துவிடுவான். ஸ்ரீதரை இதைக்கேட்டு mail செய்தால் ரொம்ப கோபப்படுவான். அவன் பிஸியாக இருப்பான்.

என் மேனேஜர் வந்தார் "Venky, I hope the report on 'Long Term Evolution' techonology will be ready tonight"

"Yeah Sure"

அவர் சென்றபின், "ஐயா, இங்க என்னோட long term plan பண்ணனும் நான்... dont disturb me" என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டேன்.

Employee Directory யை மொத்தமாக MS Excel க்கு Export செய்தேன். ஒவ்வொரு பேராக பார்த்து கண்டுபிடிக்கலாம் என்று திட்டம். முதல் கட்டமாக ஆம்பிளை பெயர்களை பிரித்தேன். அதிலும் Prasanna, Soujanya, Saswata என்று ஆம்பிள்ளையா பொம்பளையா என்று கண்டுபிடிக்க முடியாத பெயர்கள் வேறு.

அதிலேயே 2 மணி நேரம் போனது. பின்னே, 2137 பெயர்களை படிக்க வேண்டாமா? அடுத்த கட்டமாக, வட நாட்டு பெயர்களை களைந்தேன். Sheetal களும், Sapna க்களும் போயின. கூடவே இன்னும் இரண்டு மணி நேரமும்.

அடுத்த கட்டம் வருவதற்குள், "Venky, what are you doing yaar.. Is the report done?"

"Well, actually.. the long term... evolution.. and technology of the... compared to 3G..." என்று உளறினேன்.

"You look very tired... Do it tomorrow, go home now.. Take care, you seem to be exerting too much" என்றார்.

"நன்றி ஐயா" என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டு வீட்டுக்கு சென்றுவிட்டேன்.

இன்னும் 363 பெயர்கள் பரிசீலனையில் இருந்தன. வீட்டுக்கு போகும்போது அதே நினைவு தான். திடீரென்று உரைத்தது. சுதாகர் அண்ணா அவள் மொபைல் டிவிஷனிலேயே இருப்பதாக அன்று சொன்னானே. சே, அதில் மட்டும் தேடியிருந்தால், இந்நேரம் முடித்திருக்கலாம் என்று நொந்துகொண்டே போனேன்.

"என்னடா ரொம்ப வேலையா? கொஞ்சம் உடம்பையும் பாத்துக்கோடா" என்றாள் அம்மா. "நீ பேர கேட்டு சொல்றியா" என்று அவளுக்கு கேட்காதவாறு சொல்லிவிட்டு அந்த weekend class க்கான assignment செய்ய போனேன். ஆனால் assignment எங்கே செய்ய முடிந்தது. அந்த பெயர் தெரியாத முகம் தெரியாத பெண்ணின் முகம், sorry, ஞாபகம் தான் நினைவில் இருந்தது.

அடுத்த சில நாட்கள் ஆஃபீஸில் அந்த XL sheet ஐ திறக்கமுடியவில்லை. பயங்கர வேலை. பயம் வேறு. அதைத்திறந்து analyze பண்ண ஆரம்பித்தால் நாளெல்லாம் அதிலேயே போய்விடும். Long Term Evolution எல்லாம் கோவிந்தா தான்.

ஆனால் எங்கே பெண்கள் இருந்தாலும் வெறித்து வெறித்து பார்க்க ஆரம்பித்தேன். "டேய், Brigade Road ல பண்ற மாதிரி ஆஃபீஸ்லயே பண்ற டா இப்போல்லாம்... கொஞ்சம் அடக்கி வாசி... அசிங்கமா இருக்கு... பேசாம கல்யாணம் பண்ணிக்கோயேன்..." என்று நண்பர்கள் advice வேறு. எல்லாம் நேரக்கொடுமை. என் கஷ்டம் அவர்களுக்கு என்ன தெரியும்.

ஒரு நாள் Tech Sensing Report ஐ திறந்து வைத்துக்கொண்டு, அவளைப்பற்றியே
யொசித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தேன். லிஃப்ட்டில் பார்த்த பெண், lunch buffet யில் எனக்கு முன்னே சென்ற பெண், காஃபி மஷின் அருகே என்னைப்பார்த்து hi சொன்ன பெண் எல்லோரும் நினைவுக்கு வந்து போனார்கள்.

அனைவருக்குமே Tam-Bram களை இருந்ததோ? அந்த லிஃப்ட் பெண் வட நாட்டுக்காரி என்றே நினைக்கிறேன். அந்த காஃபி மஷின் பெண் ரொம்ப அழகாக இருந்தாள். அவளாக இருந்தால் ரொம்ப சந்தோஷப்படுவேன்.

சே, இந்த பெண்களால் எவ்வளவு கஷ்டம். அவள் பாட்டுக்கு வேலை செய்துகொண்டிருப்பாள். நான் இங்கே லூசு மாதிரி யோசித்துக்கொண்டு உட்கார்ந்திருக்கிறேன். ஸ்ரீதரிடம் போய் புகழ் பாடுகிறாள். என்னிடம் வந்து
பேசினால் என்ன? வந்து பேசக்கூட கோர்ஸ் முடியும் வரை காத்திருக்க வேண்டுமா என்ன? நான் தான் கொஞ்சம் ஓவராக பண்ணிவிட்டேனோ? அம்மாவிடம் அன்று அவ்வளவு strict ஆக பேசியிருக்கக்கூடாது. பேசாமல் engagement முடித்திருந்தால் இப்போது பிரச்சினை இல்லை. இப்போது யாரென்றே தெரியாமல் அவதிப்படுகிறேன்.

"What Venky... why are you not picking up the phone yaar?"

"Oh.. sorry Deepak... " என்றபடியே மொபைலைப்பார்த்தால், 5 மிஸ்டு கால்கள்.

"Not to worry... I wanted some info.. But I got it myself... By the way, what is happening with you? Always seem to be in some kind of dreams... Got engaged or something?"

"No.. No.. Deepak"

"I guess you need a break... Go to a disco and get all your stress busted today" என்று சொல்லி சென்றுவிட்டார்.

சட்டென்று அண்ணா சொன்னது நினைவுக்கு வந்தது - அவள் நன்றாக dance ஆடுவாளாமே! நேராக லைப்ரரிக்கு ஓடினேன். ஒரு மாதம் முன்பு நடந்த கம்பெனி விழாவின் DVD இருக்கும் அங்கே. அதில் கண்டிப்பாக அவள் ஆடியிருக்க வேண்டும்! டான்சரான என் நண்பன் காந்தியிடம் கேட்கலாம், ஆனால், அவன் ஆயிரம் கேள்விகள் கேட்பான். DVD பார்த்து மூன்று மணி நேரம் செலவானதுதான் மிச்சம். அதில் ஆடியிருந்த பெண்களில் முன் வரிசையில் யாருமே தமிழ் போல் இல்லை. அனைவரும் அறைகுறை ஆடையில் வேறு இருந்தார்கள். பின் வரிசை பெண்கள் முகங்களெல்லாம் சரியாகவே தெரியவில்லை.

என்ன நடக்கிறது இங்கே? நன்றாகத்தானே இருந்தேன். ஏன் இப்படி ஒரு பெண்ணுக்காக இப்படி ஆகிவிட்டேன்? இது வெறும் curiosity யா இல்லை உண்மையிலேயே கல்யாண ஆசை வந்து விட்டதா? தினம் தினம் தூக்கமில்லாமல் கஷ்டப்பட்டேன். வேலையில் ஏதோ கவலை என்று அப்பா-அம்மா நினைத்தார்கள். உண்மையை அவர்களிடம் சொல்ல என் Ego வும் இடம் கொடுக்கவில்லை.

அப்படியே சனிக்கிழமை வந்துவிட்டது. Bar Camp உம் முடிந்தது. அதிலும் சுரத்தில்லமலேயே இருந்தேன். ஆனால் ரொம்ப களைத்துப்போயிருந்ததால் நன்றாக தூக்கம் வந்தது.

சில வாரங்கள் கழித்து!

"அவ்ளோ கஷ்டப்பட்டீங்களா என் பேர கண்டுபிடிக்க..." என்றாள் ஒரு வித பெருமையுடன் - என் அழகான fiancee.

"ஆமாம்மா... ஒரு வாரம் torture தான்... ஆனா இப்டி ஒரு அழகிக்காக எவ்ளோ நாள் வேணா கத்திருக்கலாம்" என்று அவளை இன்னும் பெருமைப்படுத்தினேன்.

"இது ரொம்ப ஓவர்தான்"

"அதெல்லாம் ரொம்ப சீரியஸா எடுத்துக்காத.... சரி வா, வீட்டுக்கு போகலாம்"

"சீசீ... உங்க அப்பா அம்மா அப்புறம் என்ன நினைப்பாங்க?"

"அதெல்லாம் பாத்துக்கலாம் வா.... நான் கோர்ஸ் முடியற முன்னாடியே கல்யாணத்துக்கு OK சொன்னா அவங்களுக்கு சந்தோஷம்தான்"

"அப்போ போய் first சம்மதம் சொல்லுங்க... நான் எங்க அப்பாகிட்ட சொல்லி பேச சொல்றேன்... அப்புறம் நான் வீட்டுக்கு வர்ற business எல்லாம் வச்சிக்கலாம்."

"அதுவும் சரி தான், இரு உனக்கு ஆட்டோ பாக்கறேன்..."

"ஆஹா... இந்த hi tech world லயும் தமிழ் பொண்ணுங்க எவ்ளோ importance குடுக்கறாங்கப்பா பெரியவங்களுக்கு." என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டேன்.

அப்படியே ஆட்டோ பிடிக்கும் முன் ஒரு பொக்கே வாங்கி அவளுக்கு கொடுக்க, அவள் அப்படியே வெட்கப்பட,

"டேய்... இந்த சட்ட தோய்க்கனுமா வேண்டாமா" என்று அப்பா கத்தினார்.

சீ, எல்லாம் கனவா!! அடடா, கனவுலயாவது ஆஃபீஸ் பேர கேட்ருக்கலாமே.... அது சரி, இப்பல்லாம், கனவுல கூட "சில வாரங்கள் கழித்து" னு வருது. என்ன கொடும சரவணன் இது, என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டேன்.

அடுத்த திங்கள், இந்த லூசுத்தனமான லவ்வில் சிக்கி ஒரு வாரம் ஆகிவிட்டிருந்தது. நான் ஆபீஸுக்கு கிளம்புகையில், "இந்த விஸ்வனாதன் மெயில் பண்ணிருக்காரு பாரு" என்றார் அப்பா, என் அம்மாவிடம்.

"யாரு விஸ்வனாதன்?"

"யாரா? அவர்தான்டா.. சுதாகரோட வேல பாக்கறவர். போன வாரம் சொன்னேனே.."

"ஓ.."

"சரி, நீ கிளம்பு... சித்த இருங்கோ... இவன அனுப்பிட்டு வந்துடறேன்..."

அது சரி, என்ன இப்டி டீல்ல உட்டுட்டு சம்பந்தி ரெண்டு பேரும் மெயில் பண்ணிக்கறீங்களா என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டே அவசரமாக கிளம்பினேன்.

"Pradeepa Viswanathan?" என்றேன் ஒரு வித கோபத்துடன்.

"அமா, நீங்களே கண்டுபுடிச்சுட்டீங்களா?"

"உட்காருடா... உனக்கும் சேத்து North Meals சொல்லிட்டேன்... OK தானே?"

"OK" என்று முறைத்தேன்.

"அடப்பாவி... நான் பாட்டுக்கு என் வேல உண்டு, கோர்ஸ் உண்டுன்னு இருந்தேனேடா....போன வாரம் ஃபோன்ல அனாவசியமா பாதிப்பாதி விஷயத்த பேசி கொழப்பிட்டியேடா.... இவ அப்பன் வேற... எனக்காகவே வெயிட் பண்ணுவாராமே.... இப்போ என்ன ஆச்சு?" என்றெல்லாம் சொல்ல முடியாமல் சாப்பிட்டு விட்டு வந்தேன். ஆனால் இந்தப்பெண் ஒன்றும் அந்த காஃபி மஷின் பெண் போல அழகாக இல்லை என்று நினைத்து மனதை தேற்றிக்கொண்டேன்.

சீட்டுக்கு வந்தேன். ஸ்ரீதர் மேல் கோபம் கோபமாக வந்தது. சற்று நேரம் மானிட்டரையே பார்த்தேன்.

பாத்ரூமில் போய் அரை மணி உர்கார்ந்தேன். காஃபி ஷாப்பில் போய் இன்னும் அரை மணி நேரம் இருந்தேன். கோபம் அடங்கவேயில்லை. ஒரு முடிவுக்கு வந்தவனாக அம்மாவுக்கு ஃபோன் செய்தேன்.

"என்னடா இந்த நேரத்துல?"

"அம்மா"

"என்னடா போர் அடிக்குதா? சரி நான் நியூஸ் சொல்றேன், சுதாகர் பாத்து சொன்னானே, அந்த பொண்ணுக்கு நிச்சயம் ஆயிடுத்தாம்.... அவா அப்பா மெயில் பண்ணியிருதார் கார்த்தால... நல்ல குடும்பம். நமக்குதான் குடுத்து வெக்கல... அவாளும் பாவம் எத்தன நாள்தான் வெயிட் பண்ணுவா?"

சர்குரு ஓட்டலில் ஏற்கனவே ரூம் ரிசர்வ் செய்திருந்தேன். சிறிது களைப்பாறிவிட்டு குளித்து ப்ரேக்ஃபாஸ்ட் சாப்பிட்டுவிட்டு எங்கள் வீட்டுக்கு கிளம்பினேன். அவரது வாழ்க்கையின் மாஸ்டர்பீஸ் அந்த வீடு என்று அப்பா சொல்லுவார். அதனால்தான் இவ்வளவு நாட்களாக விற்கவில்லை. இரண்டு வருடங்களாக வாடகைக்கு ஆள் இருந்தார்கள். என் சித்தப்பா பாண்டிச்சேரியில் இருந்ததால் அவர் கவனித்து வந்தார். ஒரு மாதம் முன்பு அவரும் சென்னைக்கு வந்துவிட்டார். இப்போது வாடகைக்கு இருப்பவர்கள் அவர்களாகவே வாங்க முன் வந்தார்கள். பெரும் யோசனைக்குப்பிறகு, விற்றுவிடிவதாக அப்பாவே முடிவு செய்தார்.

இந்த வேலையை முடித்துவிட்டு நெய்வேலி சென்று என் மாமாவைப்பார்த்துவிட்டு சாயங்காலத்திற்குள் சென்னை சென்றாக வேண்டும்.

பத்து மணி. காலிங் பெல்லை அழுத்தினேன். கதவு திறந்தது. திறந்தவள் சுப்ரியா. நான் ஆடிப்போனேன். அவன் ஆச்சரியப்பட்டாள்.

"அப்டியா? தட் இஸ் சர்ப்ரைஸிங்... கிருஷ்ணமூர்த்திங்கறது....?"

"ஓ... அது தெரியவே இல்லை எங்களுக்கு..."

"நீங்க எப்போ இங்கே வந்தீங்க?"

"நாங்க யூஎஸ் லேந்து வந்து ஆறு மாசம் ஆகுது... நேரா பாண்டிச்சேரி போஸ்ட்டிங்... அமைதியான ஊர்ன்னு வந்தாச்சு..."

நான்கு வருடங்கள் முன்பு எதுவுமே நடக்காதது போல் பேசினாள். சிரித்தாள். நான் இன்னும் திருமணம் செய்யவில்லையே என்ற வருத்தம் வேறு. முள்ளின் மேல் இருப்பது போல் ஒரு மணி நேரம் இருந்தேன்.

அவர்களுக்கு ஒரு பெண். பெயர் நந்தினியாம். ஆணாக இருந்திருந்தால் என் பெயரை வைத்திருப்பார்களோ?

"எனக்கொரு கேர்ள் ஃப்ரெண்ட் வேணுமடா" என்று அலைந்த காலம். கடைசி ஆறு மாதங்கள் பிராஜெக்ட் செய்வதற்காக பெங்களூரில் உள்ள ஒரு பன்னாட்டு நிறுவனத்தில் வாய்ப்பு கிடைத்தது. வாராவாரம் சனி ஞாயிறுகளில் பாண்டிச்சேரி வந்து விடுவேன். ஒவ்வொரு முறையும், பக்கத்தில் ஒரு பெண் அமர்ந்து நண்பியாகி, காதலியாகி, மனைவியாகி... என்றெல்லாம் எதிர்பார்ப்பு இருக்கும். ஆனால் அப்படி எதுவும் நடந்ததில்லை.

இப்படி போய்க்கொண்டிருந்த வாழ்க்கையில் திடீரென சுப்ரியா முளைத்தாள். நான் பிராஜெக்ட் செய்த அதே நிறுவனத்தில் அவளும் சேர்ந்தாள். தஞ்சாவூரைச்சேர்ந்தவள். பேரழகி. இருவரும் ஒரே பிராஜெக்ட்டில் நுழைந்தோம். ஆரம்பத்தில் நண்பர்களாகத்தான் இருந்தோம். பிராஜெக்ட்டில் கடுமையாக உழைத்தோம். அதனால் மாலை நேரங்களில் நாங்கள் இருவர் மட்டும் அலுவலகத்தில் இருப்பது வழக்கமானது. நான் அவளை ஹாஸ்ட்டலில் ட்ராப் செய்வதும் வழக்கமானது. இதனால் காதல் கிசுகிசு கிளம்பியது.

பிராஜெக்ட் வேலை முடிந்தது... அங்கே இருந்த ஜொள்ளு மேனேஜர் பெண்களை மட்டும் வேலைக்கு வைத்துக்கொண்டான்... ஆண்களை எல்லாம் கழட்டி விட்டான்... ஆக அவளுக்கு வேலை கிடைத்தது... நான் வெளியே...

வெள்ளைக்காரர்கள் நாட்டில் பொருளாதார நெருக்கடி ஏற்பட்டதால் இந்தியாவில் யாருக்கும் வேலை கிடைக்கவில்லை... பெங்களூரில் நாயாக அலைந்தேன்... ஒரு பிரயோஜனமும் இல்லை... ஆரம்பத்தில் சுப்ரியா மிகவும் உறுதுணையாக இருந்தாள்... அவளுடன் வேலைப்பார்த்த மஹேஷ் என்பவன் மூலம் சில நேர்முகங்கள் ஏற்பாடு செய்தாள்... ஆனால் என் தலையெழுத்து, எதுவுமே சரியாகவரவில்லை... கால் சென்ட்டர் வேலைக்கு கூட முயற்சிசெய்தேன்... என் ஆங்கிலத்தில் தாய்மொழியின் தாக்கம் உள்ளதாம்... அதனால் அங்கும் விரட்டி விட்டார்கள்...

ஆறு மாதங்கள் ஓடி விட்டிருந்தன... கடைசியில் ஒரு பெரிய ஜப்பானிய நிறுவனத்தில் வேலை கிடைத்தது... அடுத்த மாதமே ஜப்பான் செல்ல வேண்டும் என்றார்கள்... முதல் வேலையாக சுப்ரியாவுக்கு ஃபோன் செய்தேன்... ஒரு மாதத்திற்குள் இரு வீட்டிலும் பேசி நிச்சயதார்த்தத்தை முடித்து விட வேண்டும்...

"சுப்ரியா, நான் தான், எனக்கு ஜப்பான் ல வேலை கிடைச்சிருக்கு..."

"வாவ்... கங்கிராட்ஸ் டா.."

"தாங்க்ஸ்... பை தி வே, நாம முடிவு பண்ண ஆறு மாசம் நாளையோட முடியுது தெரியுமா? "

"அப்போ... மஹேஷ தான் கல்யாணம் பண்ணிக்கப்போறியா?"

"ஆமா ஆமா... இன்னும் ரெண்டு மாசத்துல கல்யாணம்... அப்புறம் உடனே யூஎஸ் போறோம்... அங்கே அவருக்கு நல்ல வேலை கிடைச்சிருக்கு... நானும் போய் ஏதாவது தேடிக்க வேண்டியது தான்..."

ஒடிந்து போனேன். ஜப்பான் சென்றேன். ஜப்பானியர்களுக்கு இணையாக வேலை செய்தேன்... கை நிறைய பணம். பெயர், புகழ். ஆனால் சந்தோஷம் மட்டும் இல்லை... எப்போதும் அவள் நினைவு...

இந்தியா திரும்பினேன்... அதே ஜப்பானிய நிறுவனத்தின் இந்திய கிளைகளை கவனிக்க வேண்டிய பொறுப்பு... அப்பா-அம்மாவையும் சென்னைக்கே அழைத்துக்கொண்டேன்... அவர்கள் பலமுறை நச்சரித்தார்கள், திருமணத்திற்கு... நான் சம்மதிக்கவில்லை... இன்னமும் பார்த்துக்கொண்டுதான் உள்ளார்கள்... நான் தான் ஏதாவது சொல்லி தட்டிக்கழித்துக்கொண்டு வருகிறேன்...

சிகரெட் கையைச்சுட்டது... நினைவுக்குத்திரும்பினேன்... நெய்வேலி செல்லும் பாதையில் சான்ட்ரோவை செலுத்தினேன். ரொம்ப ரெஸ்ட்லெஸாக இருந்தது...

பெங்களூர். காலை 8.45 மணி. இந்தியன் எக்ஸ்பிரஸ் சிக்னல். கோட்டைத்தாண்டி வண்டியை சரேலென நிறுத்தினேன். சிவாஜி நகர் பஸ் ஸ்டாண்டிலிருந்து வழி கொடுக்காமல் 20 கிமீ வேகத்திலேயே வந்த அந்த ஆட்டோக்காரனை மனதிற்குள் திட்டினேன். நானும் இந்த ஆட்டோக்காரர்களின் செய்கையால் கோபப்படக்கூடாது என்றுதான் நினைப்பேன். ஆனால் முடியவில்லை.

காதில் 6610 வழியாக ரேடியோ சிட்டி வழிந்துகொண்டிருந்தது. பெங்களூர் முழுக்க எங்கெல்லாம் ட்ராஃபிக் ஜாம் என்று சொல்லிக்கொண்டிருந்தாள் வஸந்தி. காலை 8.30 மணிக்கு, பெங்களூரின் அனைத்து சிக்னலும் ஜாம் ஆவது வழக்கம் தானே! இதை ஏன் தினமும் சொல்கிறாள் என்று தெரியவில்லை. முன்பிருந்த சுனைனாவை விட வஸந்தி பரவாயில்லை. சுனைனா தன் கொஞ்சல்களுக்கிடையில் சில பாடல்களையும் ஒலிபரப்புவாள்.

திடீரென்று என் பின்னே வேகமாக ஒரு பைக் வரும் சத்தம் கேட்டது. என்ன ஏதென்று திரும்பி பார்க்கும் முன் ஒரு பைக்கின் கிராஷ் கார்ட் என் காலை பதம் பார்த்தது. எனக்கும் 3-4 அதி தாண்டி அந்த பைக் நின்றது. அதில் ஒரு பணக்கார சேட்டுப்பையன் உட்கார்ந்திருந்தான். சிகப்பு கலர் கை வைக்காத பனியனும், முக்கால் பேண்ட்டும் அணிந்திருந்தான். பாப் பாடகர்களையே அலற செய்யும் அளவிற்கு தலைமுடி. காலில் ஆழமாக வெட்டு பட்டிருக்க வேண்டும் என்று நினைத்தேன். பயங்கரமாக வலித்தது. ரத்தம் வேறு வருகிறதோ என்று பயந்தேன்.

என் பக்கத்திலிருந்த ஆட்டோக்காரர் சொன்னார்

'அவங்கப்பன் தெரு சார் இது, நாம என்னா பண்ணியும் ஒன்னும் ஆவறதில்ல.... அவனுங்கள ஒன்னும் பண்ண முடியாது... பணம் இருக்கனும் சார் கைல... வேற ஒன்னும் வாணாம்...'

மனித சமுதாயத்தின் மிகப்பெரும் ரகசியத்தை ஒற்றை வரியில் சொல்லிவிட்டார்.

கால் வலி இன்னும் இருந்தது. இன்னும் 60 நொடிகள் இருந்தன பச்சை விளக்கு விழ. என் பின்னால் சிவாஜி நகர் பஸ் ஸ்டாண்ட் வரை வாகனங்கள் சேர்ந்து விட்டன. கண்டோன்மெண்ட்டில் இருந்து பேருந்தில் இருந்து இறங்கி மக்கள் சாரி சாரியாக வருவாய்த்துறை அலுவலகம் அருகில் இருந்த நிறுத்தத்திற்கு ஓடினார்கள். இந்த BMTC பேருந்துகள் மட்டும் இல்லையென்றால் பெங்களூருக்கு என்ன ஆகும் என்று யோசித்தேன். எந்த திசையை பார்த்தாலும் வழக்கம் போல் அமளி. கீழ்-நடுத்தர மக்கள் பேருந்தை பிடிக்க நாலா புறமும் ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். மேல்-நடுத்தர மக்கள் பைக்கிலும் ஆட்டோவிலும் உட்கார்ந்து பச்சை விழ காத்திருந்தார்கள். மேல் தட்டு மக்கள் மற்றவர்கள் துப்பட்டாவை கிழித்து விட்டு ஓடிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

க்வீன்ஸ் ரோட்டிலிருந்து வரும் வாகனங்களுக்கு சிக்னல் பச்சை ஆனது. அனைவருக்கும் முன்னே ஒரு சைக்கிள்காரன் வந்துகொண்டிருந்தான். அவன் பின்னே ஒரு கார்க்காரன் மூர்க்கத்தனமாக ஹாரன் அடித்துக்கொண்டிருந்தான். பாவம், சைக்கிள்காரன் வேகவேகமாக மிதித்து குப்பை மேட்டை தாண்டியவுடன் வழி விடத்தான் முயற்சி செய்தான். ஆனால் கார்க்காரன் விடவில்லை. என்னுடன் போட்டி போடுகிறாயா என்ற ரீதியில் ஹாரன் அடித்துக்கொண்டே இருந்தான். அதனால் சைக்கிள்காரன் பாவம், குப்பை மேட்டிலேயே நிறுத்தவேண்டியதாகிப்போனது. அந்த கார்க்காரன் எப்போதாவது சைக்கிள் ஓட்டியிருப்பானா என்று யோசித்தேன். ஓட்டியிருந்தால் தெரியும் அவனுக்கு, ஒரு முறை சைக்கிளை நிறுத்தி மறுபடி கிளப்ப எவ்வளவு சக்தி செலவாகும் என்று.

கடைசியாக என் சிக்னலும் பச்சை விளக்கை காட்டியது. அனைவரும் அவசர அவசரமாக கிளம்பினார்கள். கன்னிங்ஹாம் ரோட்டில் போகும் போது ரோட்டின் நடுவே செல்லக்கூடாது என்று ஞாபகப்படுத்திக்கொண்டேன். (மறுபடியும்) என்ன ஏதென்று நான் திரும்பிப்பார்க்குமுன் அந்த பைக்காரன் என் முன்னால் சடக்கென்று கட் செய்து இடது புறம் சென்றான்.

'டேய் நாயே...'

என்று அடிவயிற்றிலிருந்து கத்தினேன்.

அவனுக்கு அப்படி கட் கொடுப்பது வாடிக்கையாக இருக்கலாம். ஆனால் நான் அப்படி கத்தியதை அவன் எதிர் பார்க்கவில்லை. சிறிது பயந்து போனான் என்றுதான் சொல்ல வேண்டும். எனக்கு ஏதோ ஆகிவிட்டது என்று திரும்பிபார்த்தவன் அவன் முன்னெயிருந்த பேருந்தை பார்க்கவில்லை. திடீரென்று பைக்கை நிறுத்த முடியாமல் நழுவி பேருந்துக்கு கீழே சென்றான்.

அவனுக்கு என்ன ஆனது என்று நான் நின்று பார்க்கவில்லை. அலவலகத்திற்கு நேரம் ஆனதால் கிளம்பி விட்டேன்.

மதியம் சாப்பிட்டவுடன் நண்பனுடன் பாஸ்கின் ராபின்ஸுக்கு ஐஸ்க்ரீம் சாப்பிட சென்றேன். அங்கே வொக்ஹார்ட் மருத்துவமனையின் இரு ஆண் நர்ஸ்கள் பேசிக்கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

'அந்த கிழவிக்கு என்ன ஆச்சு?'

'அட போப்பா... அந்த சோகக்கதய கேக்காத... அவ புள்ளயாண்டான் காலைல ரத்தம் குடுக்க வந்தப்போ யாரோ ரோட்ல கத்தப்போயி இவன் பஸ் அடில மாட்டி செத்துட்டான்... பாவம் ராத்ரி எல்லாம் அந்த கெழவி கூடவே இர்ந்ததுல பையனுக்கு பாலன்ஸ் போய்டிச்சி... ரத்தம் இல்லாததால அந்த அம்மாவும் செத்து போச்சி...'

'ஆமாவா? த்ச்.. த்ச்... எவ்ளோ நல்ல மனுஷங்கோ...'
