Hi, my name is Butch Ewing. No, I'm not a pirate. I wear this eye patch because I have a rare form of cancer called Ocular Melanoma. Ocular Melanoma affects only six out of a million people each year. There is no known cause and about a 50% mortality rate.
Because of early detection and recent advances in modern medicine, I'm celebrating my three year cancerversary! But there is no cure for cancer.
Help me in raising awareness for this aggressive disease. Please visit www.helpbutch.com to lean more about Ocular Melanoma and how you can help me, Butch Ewing.
Right now, I'm involved in a contest with about.me. Go to www.about.me/butchewing to vote for my profile to be the face of about.me. If I win, my profile will be on a billboard in Times Square NYC! But I can't do it without your help.
So, go to helpbutch.com now. And remember, get yearly dilated eye exams because eye cancer is no joke. Oh, and visit your local ophthalmologist, and tell them that Butch sent you!

Nancy, Kris, Quentin, Jesse and Dean all live on Elm Street. At night, they're all having the same dream--of the same man, wearing a tattered red and green striped sweater, a beaten fedora half-concealing a disfigured face and a gardener's glove with knives for fingers. And they're all hearing the same frightening voice... One by one, he terrorizes them within the curved walls of their dreams, where the rules are his, and the only way out is to wake up. But when one of their number dies a violent death, they soon realize that what happens in their dreams happens for real, and the only way to stay alive is to stay awake. Functioning on little to no sleep, the four surviving friends struggle to understand why them, why now, and what their parents aren't telling them. Buried in their past is a debt that has just come due, and to save themselves, they will have to plunge themselves into the mind of the most twisted nightmare of all... Freddy Krueger.

Simply to go to http://detectmobilebrowsers.com select your script type and BAM! You've got a very robust mobile browser detection. I recently used this on http://helpbutch.com. I made the right column only visible on non-mobile browsers. It only took my 30 seconds to implement! Now, that's what I call rapid application development.
I've noticed that it is trendy to name versions of software or whatnot. So, I have decided to name HTML5 "Cinco". Likewise, I have decided to name HTML4 and all previous versions, "HTML", primarily because HTML4 is really the beginning of it all and < HTML4 is seemingly insignificant.
So, from no on, please refer to HTML5 as "Cinco" and any previous versions as simply "HTML".
What is Codeworks?
Simply put, Codeworks is a series of one-day conferences for PHP developers that takes place in various locations across the United States. Instead of making you travel to another town, we’ll do all the flying and bring the conference to you!Codeworks is a highly-technical, in-depth event for developers and I.T. managers. It’s put together and presented by the some of the same team members that run php|architect Magazine, the best-known PHP magazine in the world, and organize php|tek, one of the most popular PHP conferences in North America.
Session 1: Unit Testing Strategies
Presented by Keith CaseyOfficial Summary
High Code Coverage through extensive Unit Testing is the Holy Grail in software development. Theoretically, it would create an environment where the code could be debugged, re-factored, and extended while keeping a stable and overall clean system. Unfortunately, this is about as elusive as the Holy Grail. This session will cover some easy ways to triage your project and figure out which tests can be the most useful right now.
What I learned
I'm ashamed to admit that I don't know anything about unit tests. I'm a looser. I need to get on the ball. As a result, most of what Keith said was over my head. That guy is brilliant. Keith has forgotten more than I'll ever know. My favorite quote from Keith is: "Don't quote me on that."Session 2: Learn to love the front end
Presented by Ryan StewartOfficial Summary
As a PHP developer, you’re a rockstar server-side coder – but more and more it’s becoming critical to build interesting user interfaces for your web applications. In this talk you’ll see an overview of some of the different front-end technologies. From jQuery to Adobe Flex, you’ll see how you can leverage open source framework to start building great looking user interfaces. You’ll see what’s possible with jQuery, including easy animation and easy Ajax calls, and how Adobe Flex enables advanced UI like high-end data visualization and real-time collaboration. You’ll leave with an understanding of both how and when to use HTML5/JavaScript and Adobe Flex, and see how they can help you build engaging applications faster that impress your boss and friends.
What I learned
- I'm on the right track
- HTML5, CSS3, JS (jQuery) is the way to go for most applications
- Achieving desktop like behavior is the goal "It's 2010, there's no reason for a page refresh!"
- Flash has an amazing real time collaboration tool
I really appreciated Ryan's attitude towards Flash and it's place in the development world. It was both refreshing and insightful.
Session 3: APIs from the ground up
Presented by Cal EvansOfficial Summary
What do you call a website with no HTML? An API. As the web moves out of the browser and into desktop and mobile applications, PHP developers are sitting pretty because of the speed at which they can build robust and scalable APIs to power these apps. This session takes a look at API, how to think about them, how to design them and what to do when they get wildly popular.
What I learned
- I've been building API's all along!
- I need to consider what happens when more than one users "checks out" a page.
- I need to consider what happens to the session when a user changes locations, or IP's, or browsers.
- Frapi is a cool little tool to help build API's
- I need to understand what "Nonce" is???
Session 4: A hundred thousand users.. now what?
Presented by Keith CaseyOffical Summary
You’ve launched your site, got the buzz, and then it crashed. It came back up, but now it’s crawling. Your boss is upset, his boss is yelling, and your customers are looking at your competitors. This session will cover how to make sure your app is ready to scale and some optimizations to get you there.
What I learned
- I need a plan for a major server load to scale quickly.
- I need to rely on the cloud more.
- I need to rely less on the DB.
- Have a way to "rollback".
Session 5: Object orientation the 5.3 way
Presented by Chris Cornutt (Marco Tabini)Offical Summary
With version 5.3, PHP has finally acquired a well-rounded object-orientation model that rivals—and in many way exceeds—those of most other languages, while maintaining PHP’s trademark simplicity and ease of use. In this session, Marco will explore the new OOP features in 5.3 and show you how they can improve your coding.
What I learned
- PHP 5.3 has some cool stuff.
- I should make sure that my code is ready for the upgrade.
Session 6: Five Tools You Should Know & Love
Presented by Cal EvansOffical Summary
If your project is clean, completely well-structured, and lacks those last minute hacks forced by looming deadlines, this is not the session for you. For the rest of us, we need tools that will help identify problematic code and detect as those problems appear and grow. This session will demonstrate five open source php-tools that should be in every developers’ toolbox.
What I learned
- Wow, I need to do more analyzing my server and code efficiency.
Conclusion
I really enjoyed Codeworks. I learned quite a bit and had a great time. I realize once again, that I don't know anything...but now I know a little bit of something. What is the Google Font API and the Google Font Directory?

google.load("jqueryui", "1");, which loads the most recent version in that branch (in this case,1.8.2).
I just launched a new personal project site http://onitunes.us. I've had the blog (http://blog.onitunes.us) for awhile. Durring my staycation I decided to kick it up a notch. Check it out and make fun of me...Oh, and if you click on any of the iTunes links I'll get a little something from it. So click click click!
To build this site I used:
- jQuery
- jQuery UI
- jQuery Lazy Load Plugin
- jQuery Media Plugin
- jQuery Browser Plugin Detection
- jQuery iPod-style Drilldown Menu
- iTunes Store Web Service Search API
The bulk of the site is parsing XML using PHP's SimpleXML extension. I also added a caching function inspired by RSS parser with cache function. All of the previews are Quicktime. I wanted to add a custom Flash video player, but I could not get it to work with the m4v's that Apple was sending me. I'm not sure why they DRM protect their previews???
I was thinking about adding some widgets that people can put on their websites, blogs, or social sites. I also thought about finally getting around to version 2 of the iTunes Artwork script that I had promised. I don't know??? Should I do it?
I discovered that the Apple iTunes Store partnered with LinkShare to offer an affiliate program. It's pretty cool. I've get a enough money each month to buy lunch. Everybody needs a little extra cash! It's easy. Click the banner below and set up and account today. Copy/paste a line of code and start making money right away!
I've been playing around with the Apple iTunes Store data feeds lately. Mainly I'm wanting to perfect how I post stuff to my blog about iTunes. But also because it's fun. I had the idea to show a bunch of album covers based on a specific search term. I quickly made this little script that pull 100 album covers from the Apple iTunes Store based on the work 'Love'. You can click on any of the album covers to download that album from iTunes.
Basically, I'm parsing a JSON feed from iTunes with jQuery and looping through the results. Pretty simple. I'm working on another version that allows the user to enter the search term and decide how many results are returned. But, more about that latter...
Ever wanted those flash iPhone on/off toggle switches on your webpage? Love jQuery? Well then I’ve got something special for you. iphone-style-checkboxes implements the iPhone toggles as replacements for standard HTML checkboxes. Simply run the script and your site will be updated with these specialized controls. Best of all, the underlying checkbox is not touched and backend system will never know the difference. The change is purely visual.
The iPhone Style Checkboxes jQuery script by Thomas Reynolds is pretty cool. I've used it on a couple of projects and I love how it works. I did have one small problem with form submissions. I sent a message to Thomas and he quickly responded. He wasn't able to help, but it's still cool that he had a dialogue with little ol' me. It turns out that when submitting a form, you'll need to make sure to make the value of the checkbox one.
input checked="" name="checkbox" type="checkbox" value="1"
Thomas also crafted a Prototype version.
Check it out... http://bit.ly/9hssHQ
There's been a big uprise of frameworks for PHP in the past several years. I've never really been able to fully commit to any of them. Many time I felt that they were just too much to deal with. About a year ago I went to a PHP meetup and Rasmus Lerdorf was there speaking about web security. Someone asked him which framework he liked. I really liked his answer. He said that he didn't like any of them. But, he did say that CodeIgniter is the one that he dislikes the least. Coming from the guy that is responsible for all development for Yahoo and the guy that freaking started PHP, I would say that is a pretty good compliment for CodeIgniter. So, I checked it out again. I forced myself to dig in and use it for a couple of projects. The more I used it the more I like it. It has its short comings, but it's the one that I dislike the least.
jQuery Tools is a collection of the most important user-interface components for today's websites. This single JavaScript file weighs only 5.72 Kb
I've been using the jQuery Tools from Flowplayer on quite a few projects. I really like it. They have tabs, tooltip, overlay, expose, scrollable, and flashembed. They put the js files on a CDN from Net DNA. Some of the demos don't always work and even the site itself seams to be down quite a bit. But, all in all it's great stuff. The forum is pretty good for help, it's really active. Flowplayer is pretty cool too!
When I first started building websites I used Adobe Dreamweaver on a PC. There are lots of things that I love and hate about Dreamweaver. There are really on things that I hate about PC's. Several years ago I jumped on the Mac bandwagon. No regrets. I stuck with Dreamweaver and it suited me just fine for a while. About a year ago I started looking at other text editors like Eclipse, Aptana Studio, Coda, and TextMate. I really didn't like either one. I'm sure they are both great and I know they have lots of cool features built in. But, TextMate had me at the get set because it was so simple and so Mac like. I've used it for about a year and I love it.
jParse is a jQuery plugin that allows you to parse XML that was fetched with the jQuery .ajax method (making it fully customizable). It's compatible with jQuery 1.4+, easy to use and ultra lightweight at only 2.18KB! Best of all, it's compatible with all major browsers.
I really enjoy using jParse. It's easy to implement and there are several features right out of the box that are pretty cool. As of this writting it is still in beta. I can't wait to see how this plugin develops. It's perfect for parsing normal RSS feeds. I wish that there was additional functionality that would allow reading children of element tags to allow for parsing of more complex XML.
It comes with useful APIs so prettyPhoto can be launched from nearly anywhere (yes, that includes Flash)!
I've used prettyPhoto for several projects and I really like how easy it is to implement. It is very versatile. It allows for single images, image galleries, flash content, Youtube, Vimeo, Quicktime, iframe and inline content.
On a couple of projects I have parsed feeds from Youtube and Vimeo and displayed each video in a gallery format with prettyPhoto as the lightbox. Autoplay is built in as of version 2.5.5. The only thing that I wish was built in was auto close onFinish. I have been working on building that in. Once I have it done I'll send it in to the guys at No-Margin-for-Errors.com.

Happy national coffee day! I'm not sure how coffee got it's own day, but I like it. I'm also not sure what you're supposed to do on national coffee day besides drink coffee. Anybody have some insight for me?
(by Forever the Sickest Kids)
{re-posted from "The theme song of the day is..."}
Have you had your coffee break yet? Well, in case you needed an excuse, today is National Coffee Break Day!
Y'all know I don't need an excuse to drink it!
My addiction love for the stuff began in college. I had tried it before and didn't like it, but I guess it grew on me. Or maybe I started liking it out of necessity! Either way, all it took was some hazelnut creamer & a late night talk about Jesus with a roomie.
Hazelnut coffee + Jesus = pure bliss!
So...how about you? Do you drink coffee? If so, when did you start? What's your favorite way to drink it?
Coffees of Hawaii is one of the sponsors of Coffee Crowd. They were kind enough to send me some of their Malulani Estate Coffee. It is 100% Moloka'i Coffee. The Malulani flavor results from their original "washed arabica" process, which brings out the natual acidity of the Moloka'i beans. They use a gentle roast that helps to release subtle tastes unique to the soil of Moloka'i.
Their Moloka‘i trees are rooted in the vivid red earth of the central island's upper slopes. Kualapu'u is the traditional name for this area—"sweet potato hill." The sweet potato ('uala) is a staple food of Hawaiian culture, grown just about everywhere that the land was too dry to support taro (kalo). So the name suggests that this land has been fertile farm country for a long, long time.
Anyone who knows Hawai‘i well will tell you that there's something very different, very special about Moloka‘i. Always has been.
Legends tell us that the people here were skilled in sorcery, magic spells—call it, harnessing the power of prayer. You didn't mess with Moloka‘i. The people were known to be both fierce and ingenious. This is the island where hula originated. And here you see the remains of one of the most amazing civil engineering projects of pre-contact Polynesia—dozens of submerged stone aquaculture pens that run along the southeast shoreline. The largest of these, Keawanui, encloses 55 acres of shallow seawater by means of a 2,000-foot-long wall.
Today a spirit of independence and rugged individualism still prevails. The percentage of native Hawaiians is far higher here than on the other islands. People here tend to resist modernization. People live outdoors a lot—hunt, fish, farm. Visitors are welcome, but they don't find much in the way of tourist attractions. There isn't a traffic light on the island. No building taller than a coconut tree.
A lot of nothing, some would say, especially after sunset—thicker darkness than most people have ever seen, more stars than most people ever suspected are in the sky, more silence than you've ever heard.
There's a lot of power in such a place. We happen to think that a lot of these Moloka‘i qualities are present in our beans, and we talk about them with that assumption. Scoff if you want. But that's how you get when you live on Moloka‘i.
From ancient times, Moloka'i has been known as a place of great spiritual vigor. The old legends claim that the people of Molokia'i repelled invading armies simply by harnessing the power of prayer. The island continues this tradition of quite self-reliance by resisting not armies but urban modernism. (Not one traffic light on Moloka'i!) "Mualu" means shade.
From the island of Molokai in the Hawaiian archipelago come extraordinary premium coffees. The "Coffees of Hawaii" plantation, mill and roastery in Kualapu'u is the online source of 100% Kona, 100% Maui and 100% Moloka'i coffees. Orders are roasted upon receipt. Shoppers taste the quality in every cup and 100% satisfaction is guaranteed.

Go get some Coffees of Hawaii and tell us what you think! I think next I'd like to try the Toasted Coconut.
I recently heard of something that I thought was strange - Egg Coffee. At first I thought that it was some kind of baked dessert or something. Then, I thought it may be like a quiche of some sort. It turns out that it is eggs and coffee!?!?
All of my life, whenever I have enjoyed a nice cup of hot fresh coffee, I always thought in the back of my mind...do you know what this coffee is missing? Egg. AHHH, not really! So where did this strange concoction come from? And is it really any good?
It turns out that Egg Coffee is a Scandinavian tradition. Wise Geek gives us a little bit of history on Egg Coffee:
"Egg coffee was very popular in Scandinavian countries like Norway and Sweden up until around the 1930s, when the demand for this drink began to wane. In the late 1990s, egg coffee experienced a resurgence; it's possible that Midwesterners brought egg coffee back, since the American Midwest is home to many Scandinavian traditions which are no longer observed in Scandinavia itself. Many Midwesterners associate egg coffee with Lutheran churches, since this beverage is commonly served at church events in this region of the world."
So, how do you make Egg Coffee? As with most things that are more than one way to do it. I found this recipe on Wiki Recipes:
Ingredients
- 8 Quarts & 1/2 Cups of Cold Water
- 3 Cups Ground Coffee
- 3 Eggs
- Cheesecloth
Instructions
Heat 8 Quarts Cold water to boiling in a large coffee pot. Let water boil 2 minutes.Put 1 cup ground roast coffee and 1 egg in the center of a square of cheesecloth.
Bring up edges like a sack and tie tightly around coffee and egg.
Make 2 more coffee and egg bags.
Break eggs in cheesecloth bags and using hands, muddle together with coffee.
Drop sacks of egg moistened coffee into boiling water. Boil 4 minutes.
Remove coffee bags and discard.
Add 1/2 cup cold water to settle the ground.
I also found another recipe on About.com. But, I won't list it all here. I will however, put this video from Ritual Coffee that gives step-by-step instructions on how to make Norwegian Egg Coffee:
One last thing that I should note: In my searching for Egg Coffee I came across a question on Coffee and Caffine FAQ that I have never considered.
Why do some people put egg shell in coffee grounds?
Click Here to find out why?
Have you ever heard of Egg Coffee before? Have you actually tried it? Do you put egg shells in your coffee grounds? Tell us all about it...either on our website or on Facebook.

Keeping those fresh pots coming can be a cumbersome task. This suggestion from Taste of Home can help:
"If you get the job of making coffee at a church social or family reunion, save some time and frustration by inverting the stack of coffee filters. They're much easier to separate that way." —Elaine Warshaver, Nashua, New Hampshire
Regular coffee pots typically make up to about 12 cups. But, remember that those cups are actual cups (8 oz.), not big coffee cups. If you need to make loads of coffee, you should consider getting a coffee urn. Phil Lempert a supermarket guru says, "...invest in a sturdy, stainless steel urn for when everyone in the family comes to celebrate Easter brunch, gather around for a Passover seder and, don’t forget, Mother’s and Father’s days will be here before you know it." Some of those urns make up to 100 cups of coffee! Keep in mind that making 100 cups of coffee in an urn can take a little while. So be sure to allow enough time. Everyone hates waiting for coffee.
It can get tricky trying to calculate the right amount of water and coffee when you are talking about serving a crowd. You don't want it to be too strong and you don't want it to be too weak. This chart from Kraft Foods may help:
| Number of People | Roast & Ground Coffe | Amount of Water Required | Brewing Device |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | 1/2 cup | 6-1/2 cups | Traditional Coffee Maker |
| 20 | 1 cup | 6-1/2 cups to brew double strength, then add an equal amount of boiling water to serve | Traditional Coffee Maker |
| 30 | 2 cups (about 1/2 pkg.) | 24 cups (added to a percolator)* | Percolating Urn |
Sometimes you need a real crowd pleaser. This recipe from the Food Network may be just the right thing for that coffee party after dark.

Want a drug that could lower your risk of diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and colon cancer? That could lift your mood and treat headaches? That could lower your risk of cavities?
If it sounds too good to be true, think again.
Coffee, the much maligned but undoubtedly beloved beverage, just made headlines for possibly cutting the risk of the latest disease epidemic, type 2 diabetes. And the real news seems to be that the more you drink, the better.
Reducing Disease Risk
After analyzing data on 126,000 people for as long as 18 years, Harvard researchers calculate that compared with not partaking in America's favorite morning drink, downing one to three cups of caffeinated coffee daily can reduce diabetes risk by single digits. But having six cups or more each day slashed men's risk by 54% and women's by 30% over java avoiders.
Though the scientists give the customary "more research is needed" before they recommend you do overtime at Starbuck's to specifically prevent diabetes, their findings are very similar to those in a less-publicized Dutch study. And perhaps more importantly, it's the latest of hundreds of studies suggesting that coffee may be something of a health food -- especially in higher amounts.
"Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful."
In recent decades, some 19,000 studies have been done examining coffee's impact on health. And for the most part, their results are as pleasing as a gulp of freshly brewed Breakfast Blend for the 108 million Americans who routinely enjoy this traditionally morning -- and increasingly daylong -- ritual. In practical terms, regular coffee drinkers include the majority of U.S. adults and a growing number of children.
"Overall, the research shows that coffee is far more healthful than it is harmful," says Tomas DePaulis, PhD, research scientist at Vanderbilt University's Institute for Coffee Studies, which conducts its own medical research and tracks coffee studies from around the world. "For most people, very little bad comes from drinking it, but a lot of good."
Consider this: At least six studies indicate that people who drink coffee on a regular basis are up to 80% less likely to develop Parkinson's, with three showing the more they drink, the lower the risk. Other research shows that compared to not drinking coffee, at least two cups daily can translate to a 25% reduced risk of colon cancer, an 80% drop in liver cirrhosis risk, and nearly half the risk of gallstones.
Coffee even offsets some of the damage caused by other vices, some research indicates. "People who smoke and are heavy drinkers have less heart disease and liver damage when they regularly consume large amounts of coffee compared to those who don't," says DePaulis.
There's also some evidence that coffee may help manage asthma and even control attacks when medication is unavailable, stop a headache, boost mood, and even prevent cavities.
Is it the caffeine? The oodles of antioxidants in coffee beans, some of which become especially potent during the roasting process? Even other mysterious properties that warrant this intensive study?
Actually, yes.
Some of coffee's reported benefits are a direct result of its higher caffeine content: An eight ounce cup of drip-brewed coffee contains about 85 mg -- about three and a half times more than the same serving of tea or cola or one ounce of chocolate.
"The evidence is very strong that regular coffee consumption reduces risk of Parkinson's disease and for that, it's directly related to caffeine," DePaulis tells WebMD. "In fact, Parkinson's drugs are now being developed that contain a derivative of caffeine based on this evidence."
Caffeine is also what helps in treating asthma and headaches. Though not widely publicized, a single dose of pain reliever such as Anacin or Excedrin contains up to 120 milligrams -- what's in a hefty mug o' Joe.
Boost to Athleticism
It's also caffeine -- and not coffee, per se -- that makes java a powerful aid in enhancing athletic endurance and performance, says physiologist and longtime coffee researcher Terry Graham, PhD, of the University of Guelph in Canada. So powerful, in fact, that until recently, caffeine in coffee or other forms was deemed a "controlled" substance by the Olympic Games Committee, meaning that it could be consumed only in small, designated amounts by competing athletes.
"What caffeine likely does is stimulate the brain and nervous system to do things differently," he tells WebMD. "That may include signaling you to ignore fatigue or recruit extra units of muscle for intense athletic performance. Caffeine may even have a direct effect on muscles themselves, causing them to produce a stronger contraction. But what's amazing about it is that unlike some performance-enhancing manipulation some athletes do that are specific for strength or sprinting or endurance, studies show that caffeine positively enhances all of these things."
How does this brew affect growing minds and bodies? Very nicely, it seems, says DePaulis. Coffee, as you probably know, makes you more alert, which can boost concentration. But claims that it improves a child's academic performance can be exaggerated. Coffee-drinking kids may do better on school tests because they're more awake, but most task-to-task lab studies suggest that coffee doesn't really improve mental performance, says DePaulis.
But it helps kids' minds in another way. "There recently was a study from Brazil finding that children who drink coffee with milk each day are less likely to have depression than other children," he tells WebMD. "In fact, no studies show that coffee in reasonable amounts is in any way harmful to children."
On the flip side, it's clear that coffee isn't for everyone. Its legendary jolt in excess doses -- that is, more than whatever your individual body can tolerate -- can increase nervousness, hand trembling, and cause rapid heartbeat. Coffee may also raise cholesterol levels in some people and may contribute to artery clogging. But most recent large studies show no significant adverse effects on most healthy people, although pregnant women, heart patients, and those at risk for osteoporosis may still be advised to limit or avoid coffee.
The bottom line: "People who already drink a lot of coffee don't have to feel 'guilty' as long as coffee does not affect their daily life," says Hu. "They may actually benefit from coffee habits in the long run."
In other words, consume enough caffeine -- whether it's from coffee or another source -- and you will likely run faster, last longer and be stronger. What's enough? As little as one cup can offer some benefit, but the real impact comes from at least two mugs, says Graham. By comparison, it'd take at least eight glasses of cola to get the same effect, which isn't exactly conducive for running a marathon.
"...children who drink coffee with milk each day are less likely to have depression than other children."But the harder you exercise, the more benefit you may get from coffee. "Unfortunately, where you see the enhancing effects from caffeine is in hard-working athletes, who are able to work longer and somewhat harder," says Graham, who has studied the effects of caffeine and coffee for nearly two decades. "If you a recreational athlete who is working out to reduce weight or just feel better, you're not pushing yourself hard enough to get an athletic benefit from coffee or other caffeinated products."
But you can get other benefits from coffee that have nothing to do with caffeine. "Coffee is loaded with antioxidants, including a group of compounds called quinines that when administered to lab rats, increases their insulin sensitivity" he tells WebMD. This increased sensitivity improves the body's response to insulin.
That may explain why in that new Harvard study, those drinking decaf coffee but not tea beverages also showed a reduced diabetes risk, though it was half as much as those drinking caffeinated coffee.
"We don't know exactly why coffee is beneficial for diabetes," lead researcher Frank Hu, MD, tells WebMD. "It is possible that both caffeine and other compounds play important roles. Coffee has large amounts of antioxidants such as chlorogenic acid and tocopherols, and minerals such as magnesium. All these components have been shown to improve insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism."
Meanwhile, Italian researchers credit another compound called trigonelline, which gives coffee its aroma and bitter taste, for having both antibacterial and anti-adhesive properties to help prevent dental cavities from forming. There are other theories for other conditions.

10. Many people take exception to neighbours cats using their garden as a toilet, a mixture of used coffee grounds and & orange peel put round plants and in beds you want left alone will provide a pungent smell that cats do not like and so will find someone else's garden to use.
All of the above tips are great ways to use up all the used coffee grounds that would otherwise just be put down the drain or in the bin, why not put it to good use.

I was introduced to Vietnamese Iced Coffee about seven or eight years ago. My wife and I were housing Neviah Nevi, a touring hard core band, at our home and they were like Vietnamese Iced Coffee evangelists. The loved it and were very excited to enlighten us. They told us all about it and showed us how to make it. They even gave us a starter kit!
So, what the heck is Vietnamese Iced Coffee? I'm glad you asked.
"Ca phe sua da or cafe sua da (Vietnamese: cà phê sữa đá) is a unique Vietnamese coffee recipe. Literally, the name means "iced coffee with milk". In northern Vietnam, it is also called ca phe nau da (Vietnamese: cà phê nâu đá), meaning "iced brown coffee". Ca phe sua da can be made simply by mixing brewed black coffee with about a quarter to a half as much sweetened condensed milk and then pouring it over ice.". Wikipedia. 03-14-2010 > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vietnamese_iced_coffee.We made some the other day so that we could show the crowd!
Ingredients:
- Coffee, often times with chicory (like Cafe Du Monde)
- Sweetened condensed milk (like Eagle Brand Milk)
- Ice

Step 1
Put some filtered water in your stove top tea kettle and turn the burner on high.
Step 2
Add 1 tbsp of sweetened condensed milk to the bottom of each coffee cup.
Step 3

Add ice and enjoy!
So there you have it ~ Vietnamese Iced Coffee in eight easy steps or less. Like most coffee drinks, there are many variations. Feel free to come up with your own. Join the Crowd!
A French press, also known as a press pot, coffee press, coffee plunger or сafetière à piston, is a simple coffee brewing device, probably invented in France in the 1850s, but first patented by Italian designer Attilio Calimani in 1929, who made subsequent design improvements over the years, and further refined by another Italian, Faliero Bondanini.[1]
You get a french press just about anywhere. They range in price from about $15 - $30. It's good to have at least one french press in the house. I like to have one at the office too. People gather around when I bring it out. Usually, I have to make a few pots because everyone really enjoys the great taste that you can get from a french press.
It's super easy to make coffee with a french press. The following (cheesy alert) video shows just how easy it is. But, you can also order a french press at your favorite coffee shop. It's much cheaper than ordering a late and you usually can get a few cups out of one french press.
While many people feel that coffee should be a drink that you have first thing in the morning as you rush off to work, there are even more people that feel that coffee should be enjoyed and savored. Coffee is great as a solo act but it really has star power when it has an assistant or two. Coffee is best enjoyed with _________. But what really goes great with coffee?
I like a good oatmeal raisin cookie with a half caff 130 degree latte with no foam. Or, how about coffee cake? That is why that call it that, right? Undeniably, chocolate is a great companion to any cup of coffee. Amy really loves chocolate. She got me this coffee mug to make sure that I knew that she loves me more. If you love chocolate as much as Amy, our friends at Chocolate.com - The World's Largest Chocolate Marketplace can satisfy your chocolate cravings.
I think that anything sweet will be a sure fire winner with coffee. But, what about salty or savory? A slice of New York or Chicago style pizza with an espresso? A California Roll with a double shot americano? They sound like they would go good together, because pizza Italian ~ cappuccino Italian / sushi west coast ~ coffee west coast, but I'm not sure they really go together. Maybe afterwards, but not during. Ever notice that you don't see coffee bars at the movies? Would you want a chi latte with a tub of buttery popcorn? With a movie sized chocolate bar, yes. With an order of nachos, I don't think so. I guess perhaps the Cappuccino Jelly Belly jelly beans would be ok too.
I love coffee just as much as the next coffee lover, but there are just some things that make it more enjoyable than others. Really, I think that nothing goes better with coffee than another cup and a friend to drink it with you. Coffee is a social drink. It brings people together and incites conversation. So, next time you're having coffee grab a brownie and split it with a friend. It doesn't get any better than that.
This is out first official post to the Coffee Crowd and we are excited about what is ahead! We will be sharing our experiences at local coffee shops, exploring ways to drink coffee, learning about the many types of coffee, giving tips on coffee products and more. As we go along we will develop more social interactivity. We really just want to see where this thing will go on it's own. We have no real preconceived ideas. Just a desire to talk about all things coffee with people that share our passion for it.
Currently this site is administered by Butch and Amy Ewing. We may decide to add more contributors later, but for now it's just us. Please join the crowd to enable more access to the site. We plan on sending 'members only' info through our email newsletter. So, be sure to sign up for that. We would also love to hear from you as to what you think we should discuss. We've got lot's of ideas, but we want to give the crowd what the crowds wants!
