Yes, I realize these are horrific and may be terribly upsetting (they are to me). There are also color photos which are much more graphic and which I could hardly bring myself to look at for longer than a second or two, let alone post (you can view them for yourselves on the artist’s website).
Nevertheless, it’s an important series. So here it is.
Sally Mann - What Remains (2003)
“Mann’s fifth book, What Remains, published in 2003, is based on the show of the same name at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC, and is in five parts. The first section contains photographs of the remains of Eva, her greyhound, after decomposition. The second part has the photographs of dead and decomposing bodies at the federal Forensic Anthropology Facility (known as the ‘Body Farm’). The third part details the site on her property where an armed escaped convict was killed. The fourth part is a study of the grounds of Antietam, the site of the bloodiest single day battle in American history during the Civil War. From a series of 60 Polaroid photographs taken in Tarkovsky’s native Russia and in Italy, where he spent time in political exile.
“Tarkovsky often reflected on the way time flies and wanted to stop it… The melancholy of seeing things for the last time is the highly mysterious and poetic essence that these images leave with us. It is as though Andrei wanted to transmit his own enjoyment quickly to others. And they feel like a fond farewell.” - Nov 01, 12Robert Herman: The New Yorkers:Brooklyn born photographer, Robert Herman began working as an usher at a movie theater owned
by his parents. The exposure to a wide range of films during his formative
years provided him with a unique vision: “Working for my father allowed me to
view the same movie repeatedly,” he recalls, “until the story line began to
recede and the images became independent of the narrative."
Robert received a BFA in film making from the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University and received his Masters in Digital Photography from the School of Visual Arts in NYC. Later as a production still photographer on
independent feature films, Herman discovered the life at the periphery of film
locations was more compelling than the film sets. His book of his NYC color street photographs, The New Yorkers, to be self-published in the fall of 2013 with help from a successful Kickstarter campaign. His is currently also working with Fractured Atlas to defray additional costs and accepting additional tax deductible donations.His work is part of the permanent collections of the George
Eastman House and the Telfair Museum in Savannah, GA. His photographs are also
in many private collections and has exhibited across the United States including
the Museum of Modern Art, the galleries of the Savannah College of Art &
Design, The Los Angeles Center for Digital Art and The Henry Gregg Gallery in
DUMBO. This spring, photographs from The
New Yorkers were included in a traveling exhibition that originated at the
Istanbul Photography Museum, and then moved to Ankara, Turkey with more venues
to be announced in the coming months.The New YorkersNew
York City is like a diamond mine. The pressure will turn one into coal dust or
a multi-faceted jewel. To survive with some sort of evolving grace, it is
absolutely essential to cultivate a Zen-like awareness. Consciously choosing to
be in a state of openness is also useful for making photographs. To paraphrase
the art critic John Berger: A photograph that surprises the photographer when
he makes it, in turn surprises the viewer. No matter how hardened and cynical
one becomes, the act of taking a picture, forces one to try to return to an
innocent wonder. Every time I go out to make photographs, I ask myself this
question: Can I see the world with vulnerability and clarity?
The
New Yorkers is a body of work that I began when I was still a student at NYU,
when I was learning to be a photographer. I was living in Little Italy at the
time and everyone around me seemed to be a subject: the man who changed tires,
the superintendent of the building next door. I discovered Harry Callahan’s magnificent book: Color and
Robert Frank’s The Americans. These images opened my mind to what a strong
photograph could be. If imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, then this
was my starting point. Both of these photographers re-made the mundane, the
ordinary and the everyday and transformed them into small and transcendent
jewels.
Over
the years, I lived in several different apartments and I continued making pictures
in whatever neighborhood I happened to be living in. Becoming comfortable in my
new surroundings would ease the way for me to make the authentic photographs I
was seeking. Key to this body of work was letting the subject matter determine
the outcome. I would make myself available, allowing my intuition to be my guide
and let the content rise to the surface. The true epiphany was not to embellish
or to judge: with the removal of the internal impediment strong subject matter
would speak for itself. Like a man searching for water in the desert with a
dousing rod, I became a vessel and allowed the images to pass through me onto
the film.
As an illustration of this, “Eldorado” was made
on a day when I was sitting around my loft with my girl friend at the time when
suddenly I said, “ I’ll be right back, I have to go out and take some
pictures.” Ann nodded her ascent and with my Nikon F in hand, I walked around
the corner onto Mulberry Street.
In the bright afternoon sun two luxury cars were parked angling in from
the street towards a large green garage door. I chose my framing just as two
boys walked into the shot and I made my picture. I was back at home five minutes later and knew I had captured
something truly special. I was at a loss to explain what had just happened. It
was truly a mystery. I realized that if I were wiling to relinquish some
control, I would occasionally be rewarded with strong photographs. I went out to search for water
in order to survive, and I was led to something shining down from the sky and bubbling
up from the ground.
There
is synchronicity and coincidence present everywhere. Photographs are a way of
revealing hidden relationships that are only present for a moment in space and
time, seen from a unique vantage point. The New Yorkers is the record of my
self-discovery as a photographer, inside and out, manifested on the streets of

Nikon recently announced the winners of the 2012 Nikon Small World Photomicrography Competition. Now in its 38th year, Nikon Small World is regarded as the leading forum for showcasing the beauty and complexity of life as seen through the light microscope. Competition judges analyzed entries from all over the world covering subjects ranging from chemical compounds to up-close-and-personal looks at biological specimens. This year’s top honors went to Dr. Jennifer Peters and Dr. Michael Taylor of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital for their photomicrograph, ‘The blood-brain barrier in a live zebrafish embryo’.
Top images from the 2012 Nikon Small World Competition will be exhibited in a full-color calendar and through a national museum tour. You can also vote for your favorites through November 13.

The New York Times’ International Herald Tribune did a little feature on Unstitched Utilities, a vegan shoe company that uses Tyvek to make sustainable, theoretically recyclable shoes. And they are kinda hot, you guys.

Because as much as I love a rainboot, I don’t always want to commit to full-on wellingtons. These are casual and charming and just weird-looking enough. And the men’s shoes are absolutely great, vegan dudes.

Ask any photographer what they're working on, and they're sure to tell you about their project. It's almost as if these days photographers don't take pictures any longer, they take projects. This being the internet, it would be tempting to simply find someone to blame. Pretend you're raising a question, and you'd be ready to go: "Have art schools (alternatively: galleries, bloggers, photographers, photobooks, everybody's grandmothers, whoever else you can think of) killed photography by insisting on projects?" But it's easy to see how little would be gained from that approach. Instead, it might be worthwhile to try to probe a little deeper. Well, more or less. This is a great video by Denis van Waerebeke sent to us by tipster Kat. It’s long but I was actually able to watch it! Even though I hate learning. JK, I like learning, I just like it to take 90 seconds or less. But this is very watchable and I feel like I actually understand shit! At least for the time being. It says it’s aimed at nine-to-14-year-olds. Sounds about right for me.

Explore a forest.
Remember the Lorax who spoke for the trees? As colorful as they may be,Truffula Trees have nothing on the ones in our own backyard. These six magnificent trees would leave even the Lorax speechless — and you don’t have to venture into a Dr. Suess book to find them.
1. The Banyan Tree; Lahaina, Maui. (Pictured above)
Don’t you just want to stretch out on one of these branches and read a book in the Hawaiian sun? Yeah, we do, too. Planted in 1873, this banyan tree was only eight feet tall. Today it stands 60 feet tall and has 11 more trunks than when it was first brought to Maui from India. It’s also a community center for the town of Lahaina, providing shade for almost an entire acre of land next to the beach.
2. The Lone Cypress; Monterey Peninsula, California.
The Lone Cypress earned its fame for its solitary cliffside location on the rocky California coast. We understand why — this tree is insanely photogenic! At 250 years old, this cypress is a landmark for California’s beautiful 17-mile drive on the Monterey Peninsula.
3. “Methuselah” Bristlecone Pine, California.
Gnarled and mangled, the Methuselah pine tree stands as the oldest living thing in the world. This tree has seen it all, and its twisted branches hold stories over 4,800 years old. No wonder it was named after the oldest person in the Hebrew Bible!
4. Pando Aspen Tree Grove; Utah.
Head to this grove of quaking aspen trees in southern Utah and you’ll find yourself face to face with the largest living organism in the world. Yeah, we’re talking about the trees. Turns out, these trees share a connected system of roots, making them all essentially one giant organism. Pretty neat, huh? The grove was named “Pando,” after the Latin word for “I spread.”
5. General Sherman Sequoia; Northern California.
Who is General Sherman? The person, William Tecumseh Sherman, was a general in the Civil War. But we mostly care about the tree named after him — the Sherman Tree, the biggest tree (by volume) in the world. With a circumference of 102 feet, it would take almost 20 people holding hands to circle its entire trunk!
6. Ancient Angel Oak Tree; Charleston, South Carolina.
The Ancient Angel loves to spread its wings, with a canopy reaching almost 17,000 square feet. Visitors have described this tree as elegant and enchanting, with a Southern charm all its own. Ancient Angel may also be the oldest tree east of the Mississippi at the age of 1,400 years.
Bonus: Hyperion coastal redwood; Humboldt, California.
Discovered in 2006, the Hyperion redwood is considered the tallest tree in the world at almost 380 feet. Scientists are insistent on keeping the Hyperion safe — the giant continues to tower over the forest in an undisclosed location.

This first monograph by Lexington–based photographer Sharon Lee Hart is a book of dignified black-and-white portraits of rescued farm animals, accompanied by handwritten stories by sanctuary workers. A long term vegetarian turned vegan, Hart considers farm animals “some of the most abused, overlooked animals on the planet.”

For this project, she traveled to sanctuaries in Virginia, Florida, Maryland, Michigan and New York State to document “the lucky few who are free to live out their lives in peace.” Not surprisingly, after spending time with the animals she discovered that each had its unique personality. “Some are quirky or funny, while others sensitive, shy, playful, intelligent, mischievous, or inquisitive. And all seemed to have complex emotional lives.”
These characteristics come through in Hart’s poignant photographs. Essays are by Karen Davis, president of United Poultry Concerns; Kathy Stevens, founder of the Catskill Animal Sanctuary; and Gene Baur, founder of Farm Sanctuary.

The home-tel industry is booming, but one towers above the rest (sometimes in an actual tower-house).
The next tech bubble is swelling in the global peer-to-peer accommodation market. Fast Company has deemed 2012 the year of the home-tel, with start-ups being absorbed as quickly as they’re starting. There was this week’s announcement that Berlin-based company 9flats swallowed Toronto’s iStopOver (now providing a combined 100,000 beds); not far behind are Wimdu with roughly 50,000 and HouseTrip with 100,000.
Leading the market, however, with some 200,000 listings is Airbnb: the original, certainly the hippest, both comprehensive and innovative in its scope of offerings. One EcoSalon staffer nearly choked on her appeltaart upon seeing their new Airstream section. It wouldn’t be the first time we’ve praised them for their practicality, whittling housing hook-ups down to their long-term, real world compatibility potential.

You don’t have to love cats to love this video from The Cat of Immersion Project of 16-year-old Maga Barzallo Sockemtickem finding joy in the midst of an otherwise harrowing solitary stay in a sterile room. Maga is a 16-year-old cancer patient at Seattle Children’s Hospital who recently underwent a bone marrow transplant–something that requires weeks, sometimes months, of solitary confinement to a small, sterile room to avoid infection. She recently spent over seven months in one such room while waiting for her eventual transplant, and now is back in the same room for post-transplant treatment. Maga is not only cut off from her social networks there; she’s also missing the comfort of her family pet, a cat named Merry.
In lieue of Merry (who can’t be near Maga while she’s recovering), the Children’s Hospital Staff went to Facebook requesting that fans send in photos of their own cats to share with Maga. Thousands came in, offering Maga support and comfort during her time alone in the sterile room. She responded:You guys remind me that there is so much good in the world, and its just makes me feel so much better, and connected. I can’t tell you how it feels sometimes, feeling disconnected and cut off from the world, and then with something like cat pictures bringing me back. Thank you all for your kind words, and well wishing. Its means more then you can ever know. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you…
Using sheets and a projector, they went one step further and created a “virtual cat cocoon” using all the photos. Check out the result, and Maga’s reaction:
