Stars of CCTV

While out shooting in London on wednesday, I was looking around for inspiration, and at every glance I could see CCTV cameras staring straight at me. I thought not much of it, but as the day progressed if a spotted an interesting situation and a CCTV camera added to the shot I would include it. I took maybe 4 shots that included CCTV cameras. I think it will be the start of a nice little project.

The Beastie Boys as Me #2

POPA review

I’ve used the POPA for a good few months now, so thought it would be useful to give some feedback.

When I first received the POPA I was blown away by the quality of the POPA, and packaging, a lot of effort has gone into the design of this product and this equated in a fantastic, usable accessory, that makes the iPhone into a great camera for street photography.

I wanted the POPA primarily for street photography, its so small and with along side the iPhone, you have a very discreet camera, that never seems to attract any attention.

POPA

The grip is fantastic, has a real leather feel to it and gives you a feeling that your holding a real camera. The big red button is just great, perfectly positioned, with a satisfying “shutter release” feeling. Once the iPhone is locked into the POPA, it feels secure in the grip, and the app automatically starts up.

POPA APP

One word… FAST. The POPA with the app is so fast and responsive, I would have missed so many shots if I just used the native camera on the iPhone. It focused rapidly, and allows you to shoot consecutively should you need to. The app stores all the images on a film roll, allowing you to later go through and select your favourite images, which them move onto your iPhone camera roll. You have the option to save directly but I tend not to. I also like the simplicity of the app as I tend to avoid too much processing, however I’m sure there will be many people enjoying the new additions to the app, coming shortly, which apparently add filters to the app.

Here are some shots taken with the POPA.

Photo Walk with David Gibson

Last saturday I had the pleasure of meeting David Gibson - co-founder of In-Public (Street Photography Collective), and go on a photo walk for the afternoon, with a bunch of other photographers.

We mainly wandered around the East End of London. I enjoyed it, however at first found the experience of shooting with others a little strange, and felt it drew much more attention to myself than I would normally.

He set us a task / theme for the afternoon, which I did stick to for a little while, will post those images shortly.

Film Inspiration

Inspired by the recent black and white images created using a cheap film camera (Minolta HiMatic G2) the last bunch of images shot in London last week, were shot in colour on a digital camera, X100, but saturated in Lightroom and tried to get a HP5 film feel.

Learned how to develop B/W film

A couple of weeks ago I learned how to develop my own black and white film through a Birmingham Loves Photographers event at the 6/8 Kafe.

The talented and generous Ken Harrison provided us with Ilford HP5 (my favourite B/W film) a few days before the session. I really enjoyed the process of developing the film, and I will do it again in the future, in fact I have bought the developing tank, just need some chemicals and the changing bag.

Here are a few of my favourite images from the session.

New street photography on Flickr

Slowly adding new images to Flickr. These were taken with the fuji x100. Also some with the iPhone. Using the x100 again after a 5 months gap means learning how to work around the niggles, enjoyed it though.

Here’s one with the x100

And one with the iPhone

Many thanks to Brendan Dawes, and the guys at POPA / BeepHQ for featuring me on the POPA blog. Much appreciated.

Used the POPA a fair bit now when out shooting around London. Really enjoying it, and the simplicity of shooting street photography on an iPhone.

Mobile Only Update

Spent some more time out round London with the iPhone. Learning something about shooting with the IPhone today. I’m finding that shooting moving people really close when I’m moving often causes motion blur. Sounds obvious, but not an issue with the high shutter speeds on SLRs. This probably wouldn’t happen so much on a bright day, but something I have noticed. The POPA does reduce blur due to the grip.

Basically means you can’t shoot and run quite so easily, which is what I was doing a fair bit of.

The second thing I learned was that when shooting with a camera with a viewfinder I was able to hide from my subject a lot more. When composing with an iPhone i can make eye contact with the subject. This can be a good or bad thing depending on the subject. Quite often I stare above the subjects head, so after I take the shot they turn around to see what I was shooting. By that point I’m long gone! :)

POPA fun

First day out shooting with just the iPhone and POPA for my Mobile Only Project. Wanted to shoot some colour, but it was so overcast and dull they looked better in black and white.

The POPA consists of a grip with a big red button and the POPA app. The grip really helps reduce camera shake as does the perfectly ergonomic red button shutter. I’d recommend the POPA to anyone who wants to use the iPhone as a street camera.

I was just as impressed with the App as I was with the POPA, which saves your shots to a camera roll and not directly to the iPhone, letting you be selective with what images you then save to you iPhone Photo Album. Another great feature is the very little shutter lag if any.

Go check out the app and if you like using it go out and buy the POPA big red button.

Mobile Only

This year I have set myself a little task and decided to do a street photography project shot and processed entirely on a mobile device.

I came upon this idea when I realised two things 1, I can’t afford a Fuji X1 Pro and secondly I always have it with me, so why not.

I will probably post the results on Flickr and my favourite images on the website.

I’m loving it
