Growing up in a small town,” she told a biographer, Renee Ambrosek, in 2006, “gives you two things: a sense of place and a feeling of self-consciousness — self-consciousness about one’s education and exposure, both of which tend to be limited. On the other hand, limited possibilities also mean creating your own options.” In a separate interview, she said: “I think most of us are outsiders. And I think that’s good because it makes you question things.

This show is actually pretty great.
One woman’s journey out of a singular food desertTHAT’S ME!!!!
Sorry if my checks on functionality spammed everyone who is following me with my very new and narcissistic food blog. I’m relearning how to cook for myself (though Ollie does taste tests and ratings) while learning how to garden (with the intention of eating things that I grow).
The main goal of this is to make myself create new or interesting meals and not get takeout or delivery. I used to be amazing at cooking, but weird hours and whatnot kind of killed the momentum. Plus, until recently, my refrigerator was only good for freezer burn, wilting vegetables and chilling drinks.
Ideally this will turn into a GOOP-type lifestyle blog for web types, shut ins and insane dog moms, but right now I’m just excited that nothing has caught on fire (yet). We’ll work on $980 shot glasses in a month or two.
Guys look at these pretty maps is there one of your city?! (via Richmond Virginia 11x17 print watercolor city map by SummitRidge)

theolms: J.D.’s Music Monday Picks Hey everybody, this is J.D. King from The Olms… I love music! I’ve been passionate about collecting it since I was a young lad, it was like fuel then, and still is to me now. We here at The Olms Corporation skyscraper, in between hostile takeovers, sit in our cushy chairs high above the bustling metropolis and find our meditation atop the clouds listening to all kinds of music on all sorts of mediums. Be it 78s, LPs, 45s, reel to reel, cylinders, what have you, music enriches our lives, no question, and it’s a pleasure for me to share some of my favorite recordings with you. *I personally suggest listening to these on vinyl, reel to reel or another higher medium other than digital by the way. You’ll thank yourself later for doing so, trust me. To start our weekly feature: Annette Hanshaw - “Would You Like To Take A Walk?” A beautiful, well recorded piece in time, sung by a truly pure sounding singer usually accompanied by an incredible band during the late 1920’s. Everything she’s done possess an endearing quality, and most of her records end with her saying “That’s All”,… great. Try to find 78’s!0 plays

nprfreshair: Ken Tucker loves Nashville singer-songwriter Caitlin Rose’s new album The Stand In: Rose tosses off a pun in “When I’m Gone,” as she sings, “Lyin’ / I’ve been lyin’ / I’ve been lyin’ around with the dogs in this town too long.” She’s preparing to beat a hasty retreat, yet the force of the music belies the image of Rose as a quitter or an escapee. Like another apparent influence here — the Everly Brothers’ sound pops up in some of her layered, multi-tracked harmonies — Rose knows that it takes a strong, assured performer to sell the notion of vulnerability over the long haul. Keeping yourself open to the hurt is what her music is all about.2421 plays

dollyhardon: rainysolitude: “This Means War” - Shovels & Rope The sweetest song I’ve ever heard. The words alone are enough but then consider that it’s Michael Trent singing about (and with) his wife Cary Ann Hearst, was recorded on tour in their van, and ends in an actual recording of Cary Ann as a little girl talking to her grandfather. (via deathinthesesilvercurls) This song has made me cry at least 5 times.152 plays

dollyhardon: dieyounglivefast: countryandwestern: Zoe Muth - If I Can’t Trust You With A Quarter Ladies, take this to heart. ———— It was cold Thursday night in January when I first met you at the bar. We’d been smoking our cigarettes with the heater on, listening to Elvis in my car. Well the place was pretty empty. I worked on my second rum and Pepsi, just longing for the sound of a sad country song. When you moved a little closer I had no intention of saying “no sir”, then you asked me for a quarter…that’s when it all went wrong. Chorus: You know I’m a jukebox honey, but I ain’t got much money. Said you had song that you wanted to hear so I gave my change to you. When I heard that jukebox start, I knew the cupid’s dart had missed its mark. If I can’t trust you with a quarter, how can I trust you with my heart? It was still another week ‘til payday and I had a big old pile of laundry to do. I’d been saving my quarters for a wash and dry, but like a fool I gave them all to you. Well they say a decent man is hard to find when your taste in music is as good as mine and I just could not ignore what I already knew. When you said that you’d never heard of John Prine, well I knew right away you weren’t worth my time. And I’m sorry to say hon before we’d begun, we were already through. Chorus… You can call me stubborn, you can call me a snob. You can even call me downright mean, but I’ve got the finest record collection that you’ve ever seen. Chorus… I went on one date with a (gorgeous) girl recently who revealed on the date that she wanted to be a dubstep DJ. There was not a second date. gpoy171 plays
