Hello Members!
What an amazing weekend it’s been, I hope each of you were able to get outside, and go for a ride on your bikes! I definitely took advantage.
The season has started off very well, with some great group sizes on our Tuesday night rides. The ladies ride and MTB ride have also been well attended! Thanks very much to our ride leaders who help to ensure everyone has a great experience & ride.
This week brings some changes to the Tuesday night rides, the start of our TT series on Thursday, and the fourth annual Youth Cup Race for youth ages 10-16 this coming Saturday. We absolutely require some of your help to ensure the TT, and Youth Cup race are safe, and fun events for everyone. Please contact todd@barriecycling.com, or myself to let us know your availability for for these events.
This week marks the beginning of two start locations for our Tuesday night rides. For more advanced riders & racers, the location will be changing from downtown, to École Nouvelle-Alliance at 249 Anne Street North Barrie, ON L4N 4X5, Canada. We will NOT be riding out of Sunnidale park at all this year, due to the Construction that is ongoing through the summer. Nouvelle-Alliance will be the start location all season. Please make sure you note this new location in your calendars!
Our Socially paced rides will continue leaving from Fred Grant Square in Downtown Barrie. We’ll have two, but likely three different speed groups at this ride. All are welcome, and nobody will be left behind. See you there!
Thursday morning, join the early riders for the Club’s latest offering, the Morning Glory experience. Leaving from Johnson’s beach parking lot at 6am.
On Thursday night, our Time Trial series kicks off at our Ingram Rd course. If you’ve never done a TT, or if you specialize in them, this course leaves little to be desired! It’s flat, sheltered, quiet & curvy. Come on out and give it a try. It’s also a great way to measure your progress over the course of a season. Throw down a baseline run this week, and see how much your time improves by September. First rider off at 7pm sharp, please arrive by 630 to register. Cost is $5 per rider. If you’re able to assist with timekeeping, or turn marshalling, please let us know, we definitely need some help to ensure a safe series happens.
This coming Saturday, the Club hosts our 4th annual Youth Cup Race out of WR Best Elementary on Old Barrie Road. We are still short volunteers for this race, so please let us know if you can help. We’re hosting 100+ young racers for a Time Trial and a Road Race. If you haven’t seen a Youth Cup race before, you should definitely come and check it out. Not much more inspiring than a group of squirts racing up the finishing climb.
On Sunday, we’ll be kicking off our members only Introduction to Group Riding program out of St. Vincent Park on Lakeshore Drive. This is a four week program that will help you gain the confidence and skills required to ride in a group with confidence the following Tuesday after completion. We’ll be starting at 10am, and will be able to register new members on the spot, so please spread the word to anyone who might be interested! If you plan to attend, please email me for a list of items to bring on Sunday.
Also on Sunday, we have the 2nd Interclub of the year, the Beeton Race taking place. You can find directions to the race here: Race Map
Good luck to all who race!
Monday, like tonight will feature our weekly Ladies ride, as well as our MTB ride. Both beginning at 630pm.
Starting next week, we have a new, day time cruise ride kicking off. This ride will start from the Oro Fairgrounds every week at 9am. I’ll be sharing more details on this ride later this week with an update from the ride leader. Mark your calendar now, beginning May 29.
Coming up on June 27, we have our second annual Big Bike Race for Heart & Stroke. This year we hope to beat the Baydogs both on time, and fundraising! Please check this link, and join our team. We need 29 riders to make it a go. Last year we lost by seconds, YOUR legs could be the difference. Join us today: Big Bike Race Day
cheers,
robb
Hey Members,
We might actually be rid of the snow for once. With last weeks final blast, we may be finally able to log some kilometers on the bicycles.
The Barrie Cycling club’s Adopt-A-Road Clean up day was a great success with little over 20 members making it out to help out. The club has a section of Ridge Road from Range road to Oro-Medonte line 3.
This weekend marked our Barrie Cycling Club’s CDC first win of the season with Peter Disera taking the win at the Calabogie O-Cup. Nathan Jeffs also started his season out well with a 4th in the same Junior race.
Our Tuesday Night Road rides start tomorrow night from downtown Barrie at Fred Grant Square. The rides start at 6 pm. We hope to see everyone out.
The Ladies ride will start up next Monday while the Mountain Bike ride will start on May 6, 2013.
We have a Interclub coming up on May 5, 2013 and as usual, the club is looking for volunteers. Please contact myself if you are interested
Thanks
Ben Ricetto
Happy Spring Barrie cycling club members
This winter has been very long, and we are all glad its finally coming to a end. The roads are slowly becoming salt free and the temperatures are slowly rising enough for some to get some mileage down.
We at the BCC have current goals with the help of our members to establish a new legal mountain bike network in Simcoe County. We have been working with Simcoe county to form a land use agreement to form our new network. The BCC is now calling for help from our members to bring together a group of like minded individuals to get this goal to fruition.
If you are interested please send myself a email and we will get you involved. With help from the IMBA, our new network will be built for the future.
We are looking for interested volunteers to become ride leaders for our summer rides. We are looking for people for our Tuesday Night rides, Monday Night mountain bike rides and Ladies Road Ride. We are also looking for volunteers for our Thursday night Time Trial race. We are looking at the option of supplying a first aid course for ride leaders.
The OCA is hosting the 8th annual OCA Peewee U13 and Minime U15 Development camp on May 4, 2013 at Hardwood Ski and Bike, the event runs from 9:30 am to 4pm. It includes lunch, trail pass and coach support. The OCA is looking for athletes 10-14, with 40 available spots for this camp. The camp will focus on skills, skills and more skills, and the chance to make some new friends. The deadline to apply is Friday April 26, 2013. Please check out the Ontario Cycling Association for more information.
Our Adopt-a-road cleanup day will take place on April 21, 2013 at 10 am. We will be meeting the corner of Ridge road and Range road. The event will take about 2 hours.
We need volunteers for this event. Please contact ben@barriecycling.com for more info
We are also looking at a Mountain Bike Trail cleanup day at Midhurst trails on April 27, 2013. Weather permitting of course. I’m not to sure if by then snow will still exist on the trails.
We will be sending another email in the coming weeks once the weather starts to clear.
Thanks
Ben Ricetto
Join us for the annual TREK Store open house to check out all the new bikes and gear for 2013!

Good day, everyone
The new Season is soon upon us. This will be the last email you receive from the Club, unless you renew as a 2013 Club Member. (we hope you do!)
Registration is now open. If you registered with us last year, you will have an account on the providers’ site already, you don’t need to re-register there. Your info will already be populated once you log in, saving time & effort. If you are new to the Club this year, you’ll need to register with CCN, our online provider first, then the process is quite simple. Thank you!

For the first time ever, we are offering different types of membership, I’d like to take a few moments to explain what that’s all about!
Last year, the BCC signed the first ever MTB land-user agreement with the County of Simcoe, to assume responsibility of some trails in the Strachan Tract (Bass Lake & 7th line). We didn’t get signs up as hoped, however it was an important first step to creating and building more, sustainable trails in County Forests. We were able to do this by utilizing our OCA insurance and organized rides. This is not an idea solution for all our needs, and so this year, we’ve become a member Club of IMBA (International Mountain Bike Association) Canada. This means we are now able to offer MTB only memberships/insurance in addition to road, and combo memberships.
The IMBA insurance, allows us to ensure liability coverage for those Club members who volunteer their time to help with our stewardship initiatives in County forests. Whether it’s cleaning, or marking existing trail, or building new sections, in entirely new areas, this will enable us to do so responsibly. It will also enable us to continue expanding our property use arrangements in years to come. One thing which the IMBA insurance does not cover, and where it differs from that offered by the OCA, is that personal injury accidents are not covered with insurance. If you choose to become a Combo Member, for both Road & MTB, and you are riding during official Club rides listed here: http://www.barriecycling.com/bcc-ride-race-listings/bcc-ride-calendar/ then you will enjoy full coverage for injury as well, via the OCA insurance carrier. If you have further questions here, please feel free to send them back to me. I’ll do my best to respond, or get the answers required to respond.
One of the reasons which we weren’t able to add signage to the trails we assumed responsibility for last year, was due to a lack of specific funds for the purpose. As a result, for every MTB, or Combo membership which signs up this year, we’ll be contributing $20 directly into a ‘Trails Fund’. The use of which, will be overseen, and decided by our new Mountain Bike Subcommittee, lead by Morgan Leman & Ben Ricetto. If you have interest in helping the subcommittee, please send an email to: mtb@barriecycling.com. We will also be announcing some exciting opportunities for Club members to receive training on proper, sustainable trail design and building this summer.
Our development efforts continue to grow. We are once again offering programming through the City of Barrie’s Recreation Guide, in addition to our own learn to ride and learn to race programs. We have also really grown our athlete development program from the 10 athletes we began with, thanks to Centurion Cycling’s support last year. This year, with the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Centurion Cycling, Horseshoe Resort, and Bikeland, we have expanded to more than double the number of development athletes, along with about a dozen Master’s athletes who will be training and competing alongside their younger team & Club mates. It’s going to be a great season. If you haven’t yet heard about these efforts and are interested in sponsorship, or involvement racing, please reach out to us: development@barriecycling.com
We are also going to be working to get more members trained as NCCP Coaches, OCA Commissaires, and want all our ride leaders to have basic first aid training. If you have interest in any of these areas, and are willing to give time back to the Club, contact us, and we can start making plans!
We will be offering at the very least, all of the same rides you’re used to from last season, though we hope to announce some more rides through the week. We’ll be posting information on a new volunteer recruitment, and incentive program that we hope will allow us to provide qualified, confident ride leaders at more locations and times through the season. It will come down to YOUR involvement as volunteers, but we’ll do what we can to help make it worthwhile and rewarding too! Please stay tuned to your new member package for more information on this. The existing ride Calendar so far, is posted here:http://www.barriecycling.com/bcc-ride-race-listings/bcc-ride-calendar/
We’re looking forward to an incredible season of cycling, and socializing with like-minded folks. Thanks for making 2012 the biggest, and best year of the Club to date, let’s ensure that 2013 is a year that tops it in every dimension!
Keep the rubber side down.
Peace & bike grease,
-BCC

Barrie Cycling Club announce 2013 Development & Racing Program!
Building on the success of last year’s Centurion Development program, the BCC are expanding to support more athletes & disciplines. With support from Centurion Cycling, Norco, Horseshoe Resort, Bikeland Barrie and the Ontario Trillium Foundation BCC will be providing road and mountain bike athletes ages 10 and up with coaching, equipment, rides & race support for the entire year. Elite & Masters teams for both road and MTB are also being established with additional support for racing provided. Confirmed coaches include: Andrew Watson, Andrew Doble, Brendan Matheson, Bill Trayling, Scott and Lesley Johnston.
Thanks to the support of our sponsors and the OTF, we are able to keep costs very low, for the level of support which will be provided to each athlete. We have broken rates up by age/level of coaching required. U15/U17 athletes: $450/yr per discipline (Road/MTB) or $630 for both. U19 athletes: $550/yr per discipline (Road/MTB) or $770 for both. U23 athletes: $550/yr per discipline (Road/MTB) or $770 for both. Elite level athletes: $450/yr per discipline (Road/MTB) or $630 for both. Masters level athletes $300/yr per discipline (Road/MTB) or $420 for both. Athletes will have access to coaching services, race subsidies, race kit, and equipment deals through the program.
Through the Club, we’ll also be providing opportunities for any level of cyclist to receive group, or individualized coaching services for a fee. Stay tuned for more details, and let us know if this sounds interesting.

2012 President’s Report
Welcome to this year’s AGM, thanks for coming everyone. What a wonderful turnout. I suppose it’s only fitting that we have the most people over at an AGM, coming off a season with the most members ever.
As of today, this Club has 178 members. That’s a pretty significant leap from last year’s 93. One that I won’t deny, I’m really proud of. I hope that we can continue growing at a similar rate for many years. A couple of the areas which I’m most excited about, are the growth in both youth membership, and female membership.
A few years ago, we had fewer than ten female Club members. This year, we’ve got 49! That’s an incredible change, and I believe, represents an obvious area to focus on in 2013. I want to take a moment to thank Lesley Johnston for her devotion to the women’s group of riders in this year’s BCC. Lesley lead these ladies through the season, and really helped to develop both their skills, but also their confidence riding on the road, and in a group. Next year we’ll look to add some additional structure, with some specific goals, like the Centurion rides in our area for example. I know that Lesley wants to see even more ladies out on Monday nights next year!
The number of youth members has also grown significantly since last year. We’ve got 24 Club members who are 18 or younger, that’s a sizeable percentage of the overall Club. To that end, later tonight we anticipate welcoming our first Youth Ambassador to the Club board. We believe it’s important to ensure that there is a voice of the younger contingent of members on the board, ensuring that we’re making decisions that take their needs and wants into account. They are the future leaders of the sport.
The average age of a BCC member is 39, but our membership range in age from 10-70 something years old. That’s a pretty wide range of people to accommodate with our various rides & programs, but I think we’re doing a pretty good job. Next year with our growing base of volunteers, we hope to add rides for new mom’s and those who have retired from work. Rounding out our offerings even more than they are today.

We have continued to partner with Newmarket, Owen Sound and Midland in the age old interclub road race series. One of, if not the best way to be introduced into competitive road racing there is. We had over 200 participants out at the six race series this year, our races held at the start, and end of the season went off without a hitch, though the weather for our late race, was rather miserable! We definitely would like to thank our volunteers who stuck it out in the wet and cold, to ensure that the race remained safe for everyone out there on the road. We look forward to continuing the series next year, though there has been some talk of working with the OCA to have Collingwood allowed to participate as well. While this could usurp a few of our members, we are supportive of partnering up.
Our Ontario Cup level events, the Youth race in the spring, and Cyclocross race in the fall were well attended, safe & enjoyable races. We had about 100 racers for the youth race, the largest of the series to that point. The feedback received from parents was unanimously positive, with our race being referred to as one of the athletes favourites of the year. We need to submit an expression of interest for next year, tomorrow, so I’d like to know your support of this idea. Last year at this time, we were concerned about the number of volunteers we had the previous year. I’m happy to report back, that this year’s race had over 20 volunteers out on the day of the race, ensuring that every athlete and their family had a safe, fun, and memorable experience while at our race. I’m really proud of the work everyone did to make it happen.
Our Cyclocross race, was promoted to be the Provincial Championships, our largest responsibility as a Club yet. Thanks to the hard work of Shane Hollingshead, Ben Ricetto, Cliff Lilley, Gershom Morris and Volunteer Coordinator Extraordinaire, Todd McDonald, we put on a truly spectacular race, of the highest standard around. Incredibly proud of the efforts put forth by all involved. Unfortunate for us, the OCA sanctioned another Cyclocross race in the Province in the same day, really hurting the attendance numbers. We’re currently having a discussion with the OCA, developing some policy to ensure that a similar conflict doesn’t occur again in the future.
Our adopted stretch of Ridge Rd took about two hours for spring cleaning this year. As a thanks for our hard work, the County repaved the road from Barrie to Shanty Bay! We will absolutely continue this effort next year, and hopefully for many, many more to come. I get a lot of feedback from people, thanking us for adopting the stretch. They see our name on the road sign, and it’s nice to have that positive association in people’s minds when they are forced to contend with 50 cyclists on a Tuesday night heading out Ridge Rd
Speaking of Tuesday evening cyclists, we had a Tuesday evening ride this season with over 65 riders out!! That’s incredible! How long until we have a ride with 100 people out? The following week, our rides split, into two start points, and over the season, we typically had four groups out on the roads, and many times a third group would sprout from the downtown crowd, making five groups on the road. Wow, how we’ve grown. There are still some areas where people feel we’re lacking. A ride that there seems great demand for, is one that travels at a 20-22kph pace, and next year we will start the season with one, to see where it leads. The Sunday Touring rides, supported by Trek Barrie, and lead by Tony Miranda continue to draw rave reviews from all who attend. Next season we may look to introduce a few point to point rides, where we ride to a destination, enjoy a meal, and caravan home, with careful pre-planning.
The Monday night Mountain Bike rides from the Board of Ed, have really grown as well. Thanks to the support from Bikeland, we had one, or both Winfield brothers out each week leading groups through the trails and over some of the recently constructed features available. Next year we hope to add a third MTB ride leader, to help ensure there’s alway someone ready to ride on Mondays, but to allow Jon & Mark a week off here & there!
Our Time Trial Series wasn’t able to merge with the Tri Club, so we continued on our own at the new Ingram Rd. Course. A new team of Volunteers, usually consisting of the Jeffs and/or the Kenny’s pulled it off, without a hitch. We even hosted another, greatly successful interclub TT challenge. Sadly, like last year, the Newmarket Eagles won the title. We look forward to snatching it away in 2013, however!
We continue to sit on the City of Barrie’s Active Transportation committee, and just today had Eleanor McMahon in town to attend one of our meetings. The City today submitted it’s first ever bicycle friendly community application, and plans are underway to host a Barrie Bike Summit with the Share the Road coalition in Barrie next September. We’ve had significant input into the Cities overall Transportation Master plan, and strongly believe that our City is on it’s way to becoming one with truly great active transportation infrastructure.
One of the largest developments of this year, aside from the growth in our membership, has been a partnership borne between Centurion Cycling, and the Barrie Cycling Club. Together with their support, we created Team Centurion Development Canada, and this season, provided some great opportunities to ten, budding road racers. We saw great success, with podiums, and even a National Championship being bestowed upon a team member.
For next season, our partnership with Centurion grows, and we are welcoming a new partner to the table, Horseshoe Resort! With their help and support, we are going to grow our youth development program to include Mountain Biking. We’re also looking to create Elite Road & MTB Teams, as well as Masters teams for both disciplines. Full details are just finalizing, and announcements should be released late next week. If you’ve got interest in racing, make sure you watch the website and/or your email next week!
Another big, potential development, will be the results of our Trillium funding application. I spent considerable time this summer, putting together a four year funding application to continue growing the club, growing our volunteer base, and essentially getting more people onto bikes. I should hear back within the week if we’ve been successful or not. I’m really hopeful, but at the same time, very aware of the amount of work it will take to ensure we’re successful with the deliverables that will be demanded. I hope that this prospect is exciting to at least some of you here tonight, because we’ll definitely need help from everyone if our grant is accepted. Please keep your fingers crossed!
We’ve also just submitted a collaborative application with the County of Simcoe, and the Township of Oro-Medonte to help develop a cycling strategy, which incorporates road cycling, single track mountain biking, and recreational, rail trail & on road riding. We won’t hear back until Late March on this application, but we certainly feel that helping the County, and especially Oro-Medonto become more cycling friendly is an incredibly important goal to work towards. We’ve been working with a core group of local cycling stakeholders since early in 2012 towards this goal.
Something which made me very happy to finally accomplish, was the fact we ordered Club clothing for the first time in a few years. We went with a new supplier, Louis Garneau, which wasn’t as smooth as we’d hoped. Several people were forced to exchange their jerseys due to the sizing being rather large. After much back & forth with LG, we returned a box containing 48 jerseys last week, and they will be replacing them with ‘pro-fit’ jerseys for only the shipping costs. We expect the new jerseys to arrive in time for Christmas, so keep that in mind as you’re shopping for gifts!

Happy Fall Members!
What a great season we have had this year though it seems the fall riding season and weather has hit us. I give everyone that participated in the interclub in oro today a huge pat on the back, it was freezing out there.
We are closing up on our rides in this years season with Monday being the last day for mountain biking . So head out at 6pm.
On Tuesday we are having our annual Tara end of the season ride. Ride will probably be around 30-45 minutes in length depending on weather or dedication. After the casual cruise we will be meeting at Tara restaurant downtown for some delicious Indian food. So bring a change of clothes perhaps! Meet at Fred Grant at 6pm.
We are still compiling a volunteer list for our provincials cyclocross race on November 4, 2012. So email myself so you can be added to the list. If anyone has teen’s that need volunteer hours for High school send them to us.
I would like to thank all of the volunteers throughout the season. From Jon Winfield and Lesley Johnston hosting their weekly rides to our countless volunteers at our interclub’s, our youth race and time trial’s . I would also like to thank the executive for their handwork as well.
Congratulations to the success of the Centurion Development squad throughout their first season as a team. Everyone is very proud of their achievements this year and we look forward to their growth next year. On a side note, we will be accepting applications for next years team in October, so watch Barriecycling.com and our Facebook page for more updates.

Hey Members
Just a quick mid week update,
Don’t forget the Interclub Time trial is tonight, Starts at 630, register at 6pm.
Lets show those other clubs how good we are on our bikes.
It’s on Ingram road, which is just off of Hwy 400 at Hwy 93. If your coming from Barrie, turn left onto Hwy 93 from the off ramp of Hwy 400. Its your first left after that.
Again we need volunteers, so if you have kids, teens, parents, bring them out.
The Centurion at Blue Mountain is on September 14-16. If you still want to come out and race or ride these events, you still have time. You can either do the 25, 50 or 100 mile race/rides. All events are very fun and fully supported. So don’t be afraid to that you will get lost or abandoned out on course. They have full feed zones and mechanical assistance on course.
If you would like to take part and support a charity while racing you can also do that to. The heart and stroke is looking to raise money and they have a team that you can join on the registration page.

Hello Everyone,
I hope that you’ve been enjoying the hot weather as much as I have. The riding has been amazing, and I’ve made time to get out there for than the last couple of years. What a difference. Our group rides have been growing, and becoming more organized at the same time, it’s been nice to see people’s confidence with group riding grow from the start of the season until now. If you’ve not been out for a group ride yet, what are you waiting for? Come on out, join us, and don’t miss another ride!
The club is now over 150 members, approaching 160, and we couldn’t be more thrilled. We’re also always listening for your feedback, please don’t hesitate to reply to this email if you’ve got some. If you’ve not ordered yet, you can do so now, from right here: https://reg.ccnbikes.com/index.php/event/barrie-cycling-club-membership/store
Our TT was rained out two weeks ago, but tomorrow night the weather looks good, and it should be a great night to test your pace. Team CDC will be there riding, as well as some guests from the Orillia Cycling Club. It should make for some competition, and fun. Looking forward to seeing lots of you out for it. 7pm tomorrow on Ingram Rd. Just east of Penetanguishine Rd & Hwy 400.
Our partner, and Team CDC Sponsor, Centurion Cycling has their first Canadian event of the season coming up soon. I have ridden both the C50, and the C100 courses, and they are both terrific. A good challenge for any cyclist, but also an enjoyable, and scenic ride throughout. I encourage ALL of you to register, and enjoy this one of a kind experience, riding on roads prioritized over vehicle traffic. I’m attaching a blurb from Centurion that offers a bit more information!

Finally, on a more serious note, please read this message from OCA President, and Morning Glory Cycling Club Member, Chris Chambers on some issues they are facing in the City of Toronto regarding riding two abreast.
From: Chris Chambers, OCA President (member, Morning Glory Cycling Club)
Re: Advocacy, specifically riding two abreast in Toronto
Hi Club Presidents,
I am reaching out to this group in both my capacity as OCA President, and member of a Committee within the Morning Glory Cycling Club located in Toronto. The purpose of the letter is to inform you of what we are trying to accomplish, and to see if any other clubs have experience in the matter of cycling two abreast in Toronto (it is illegal), or want to join with us as we try to have the bylaw changed.
About two weeks ago, on our regular 5:40am ride, the entire group of 70 riders was pulled over by police. There had been a formal complaint registered and the officer explained that it was illegal to ride two abreast within the City of Toronto. We also didn’t have bells on our bikes, but that issue has been largely addressed with a bulk purchase, we have 300 club members.
The Highway Traffic act governs all roads within the Province, but municipalities are allowed to write their own bylaws, as Toronto has done. The Toronto law specifically states that cyclists must ride single file, as close to the right as possible. We all know that in group rides, this is impractical, dangerous, and causes even bigger headaches for motorists when the group is very large.
Our club (MGCC) has formed a committee with member representatives ranging from Police officers, to policy experts and we are putting together a plan on how to lobby Council to have the law changed. It will be a long, probably painful process, and we could use all the support, resources, connections, we can muster together from the people who care the most about this issue – cyclists in Toronto.
Please pass this note along to your club, and if you or members of your club are interested in joining the fight, please let me know. Email is easiest. We can then pass along al of the relevant Bylaws we have uncovered and get you up to speed on events to date.
Here is a letter from our Club President, Fraser Chapman, recently sent to City Councillors: http://www.mgridetoronto.com/blog.html
We are hoping to make a difference, let me know if you have any questions or comments.
Best regards,
Chris Chambers
