Sipping on the Lady Gaga Haterade

I love Lady Gaga. But I’ve had a bad day and I’m hatin’.

After 15 pages of screenshots and freakouts, no one bothered to link to the video leak and I couldn’t find the damn thing on Google. So when I finally broke down and clicked on Gawker, which I have successfully stayed away from for over a year, I was irritated and skeptical.

Hello product placement for everything Lady Gaga is currently shilling. Halfway through, I was expecting her to bust out with a bottle of Grey Goose, a pack of American Spirits, a 10 piece Chicken McNuggets, and a limited edition Lady Gaga Snuggie. (You know you would totally buy the Snuggie.)

It was 1/3 awesome, 1/3 a commercial and 1/3 a jacked up Kill Bill video.

LOVE. Check out the whole collection, it’s actually very striking.

*There are more African Americans under correctional control today—in prison or jail, on probation or parole—than were enslaved in 1850, a decade before the Civil War began.

*As of 2004, more African American men were disenfranchised (due to felon disenfranchisement laws) than in 1870, the year the Fifteenth Amendment was ratified, prohibiting laws that explicitly deny the right to vote on the basis of race.

“Thank you, guys. When I was… I was nine and I asked my dad, “Can I have your movie camera? That old, wind-up 8 millimeter camera that was in your drawer?” And he goes, “Sure, take it.” And I took it and I started making movies with it and I started being as creative as I could, and never once in my life did my parents ever say, “What you’re doing is a waste of time.” Never. And I grew up, I had teachers, I had colleagues, I had people that I worked with all through my life who always told me what you’re doing is not a waste of time. So that was normal to me that it was OK to do that. I know there are kids out there that don’t have that support system so if you’re out there and you’re listening, listen to me: If you want to be creative, get out there and do it. It’s not a waste of time. Do it. OK? Thank you. Thank you.”

    Michael Giacchino

This was my favorite acceptance speech from the 2010 Academy Awards. As someone who was told while growing up that “what you are doing is a waste of time and you will never be successful as an artist and I won’t let you ruin your life like that” over and over and over again…this made me cry.

Much like a 311 system, SeeClickFix is predicated on the assumption that an aware and engaged public that uses technology can get its city government to efficiently resolve problems.

Can I tell you guys how much the Beartooth Highway scared the crap out of me? It was not a highway. Oh, it has grandeur but that mostly applies to the delusions of it being a highway. It’s a paved track that is only open a few months out of the year. Intensely beautiful and breathtaking but when we made it to the top and it was snowing in July, I could only think oh my god we are going to die up here in the alpine tundra and the cows are going to eat me.

There were small herds of cows on the pass. I don’t know why they were at 10,000 feet but cows aren’t the smartest creatures. I guess they were grazing but there wasn’t a whole lot of vegetation.

I sometimes get really sketched out when I get above the tree line. Things get weird that high up. I think some people get addicted to mountain climbing because of that feeling.

I don’t like that feeling. I start thinking things like cows are going to eat me.

I don’t miss the snow. The amount of snowfall was ridiculous. We left for a month between the winter and summer seasons and came back to this in April 2008. Sick of snow and frustrated with health insurance issues, this was the beginning of the end for me.

Look at those awesome cornices. I parked the car in front of the largest drift I could find and forced Alex to stand in front of the car for scale. The snow plows are huge and the blades left those marks in the snow behind the car.

“Got Your Money”- Ol’ Dirty Bastard

“The song is initially dedicated exclusively to the world’s population of attractive females, until ODB seems to have pangs of guilt for not including ladies who might be considered ‘homely’ or ‘ugly,’ so he decides to include them, with the encouraging words, ‘to me, you pretty anyway, baby.’ The artist begins the song by expressing his harsh disdain for women whom he meets, who initially appear to be interested in him, yet later express a reversal of opinion. He then transitions into a discussion about how women sometimes imply they are carrying one’s child, although the DNA tests may not yet have come back conclusively.

ODB then expresses some confusion with respect to the morality of the situation, but he is able to remedy this by presenting his Cristal brand of champagne, and urging the patrons to disarm themselves, because ODB does not approve of such violence. Continuing, it appears at first that there is some mutual attraction between “Dirty” (ODB) and the female patrons in the establishment; however, it soon becomes apparent to Dirty that the females only wish to use him for a shot at music video stardom. Despite his knowledge of their ulterior motives, ODB’s primary interest remains focused on dancing, and he tries to perpetuate his image as one who should not be taken lightly. He acknowledges a lack of intellectualism, although he claims that this is superseded by his natural charisma.

The females in the establishment start admiring Dirty for his assets, which just causes Dirty to return to the situation at hand: his money. He asks for the females’ assistance in rectifying the situation, and subsequently asks them to expose their nether regions. Dirty finishes off the song with some nonsensical lyrics, that clearly imply his rising anger for the missing money.”

    bulicks:

While the sensibility he pioneered has flourished, Hersch himself has been heard from only sporadically over the past two years. The reason is that he has, on and off during this period, been gravely ill, so sick from AIDS and a severe bout of pneumonia that the people closest to him — his partner, Scott Morgan, and his brother, Hank, as well as his parents — thought, on the worst of his many very bad days, that they had seen him for the last time. Early in 2008, the H.I.V. virus migrated to his brain, and Hersch developed AIDS-related dementia. He lived for a time in mental and physical seclusion, hallucinating under the delusion that he had the power to control time and space and that everyone around him was plotting his demise. In fact, he came so close to dying that his paranoia seemed practically justified. At his sickest, late that year, Hersch fell into a coma and remained unconscious for a full two months. While incapacitated, he was bound to his bed in St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York. He lost renal function and had to undergo regular dialysis, and he required a tracheotomy. He was unable to consume food or liquids of any kind, including water, for eight months. He could not swallow a thing or speak above a faint whisper. As a result of his prolonged unconsciousness and inactivity, he lost nearly all motor function in his hands and could not hold a pencil, let alone play the piano.

Today, at age 54, after many months of rehabilitation and therapy, grueling effort, effective medical care, an almost irrationally defiant refusal to accept his problems as anything less than temporary distractions from his music and a considerable amount of good luck, Hersch has achieved full recovery.

I’m going to read this any time I feel sorry for myself.

In local interest, Fred Hersch is from Cincinnati.

The data was taken from a USGS topographic map, processed in custom software to a mesh, and cut on the CNC router. A few anomalies are showing up in the basin - these are due to a controller software issue. I originally thought that these were due to electrical noise triggered by the dust collector, however, the marks don’t propagate over the mountains, and the collector is on an isolated circuit. Anyway, these problems are a thing of the past - A new high end controller is on it’s way.

Cincinnati, Ohio, circa 1904. “Inclined plane.” Five “Cincinnati incline” railway elevators served the growing hillside suburbs above the smoky basin below. 8x10 inch dry plate glass negative, Detroit Publishing Company (via Shorpy)

Look at this death trap. This was the Bellevue Incline which is shown crossing West Clifton Ave. The bottom started at Elm Street & McMicken and connected at the top with Ohio Avenue. I’ve passed this spot hundreds of times and not realized the origin of the stonework along the hill.  Check out the comments via the link for a Google Street View of the remaining support pillar.

That said, I’m so hopeful for a modern streetcar for Cincinnati. It was a crime the systems were abandoned.
