Instagram pushed an update tonight for two new filters among other features. The filters are called Toaster (named after Kevin Rose's newly famous dog, @toasterpup) and Sutro. Not among the features in the new update? Full resolution, of course.
FX Photo Studio - 2.99
I'll start this review off by saying thanks to the developers of FX Photo Studio for letting me give this new update a whirl, I really do appreciate it.
I have had FX Photo Studio in my photo app arsenal for quite some time. I'll be honest and say that I was one of the ones who didn't like it as much before the 3.0 update. I bought it and felt I needed to use it because of the price, so I kept it around. Boy I'm glad I did! After the 3.0 update the whole app was completely different and a lot more awesome, it boasted 171 photo effects, each of them adjustable with a slider and able to be joined with other effects and more importantly saved as presets that you can use on every photo if you want. So when I heard there was going to be yet another update, I knew it could only mean good things.
A small list of features in the new update;
After a couple of days testing this out I'll let you know what I think.
First, the opening of the app.
Now I don't know if you can see inside that little flower there, but that is my christmas tree. Yay! It's using my rear camera now! If you pay attention to detail the way I do you'll notice the 3.0 showed you your face as soon as you opened it up. Tapping on that bubble will pull up the ability to take a picture with either the front or back facing camera (not available on the 3g/3gs of course). One thing I did notice, if you take a picture from within the app by tapping on the bubble, there is no way to turn off flash. But if you choose the 'Take photo' icon on the bottom left, that option is there.
(Hard to take a screenshot without a little camera shake!)
So what about the new presets?
Remember up there when I said there is one that is now my favorite of the whole app? I lied, there are two.
The new Lemoore and Dixon effects make pretty well any photo gorgeous. The Dixon effect reminds me of the matchbox pinhole cameras I used to make, it has the most gorgeous vignetting and is adjustable as is every effect. The Lemoore effect on the other hand really makes photos pop! It has this amazing color to it that I played with for a good 20 minutes just on one photo to see how much different one end of the slider could be from the other!
There are a few effects that have two sliders, one that affect the contrast/color, some that affect the brightness/glow.. point is this app really is endless when it comes to things you can do.
And the other of my favorite new features? The ability to share to Tumblr! I have been on Tumblr for a few years and it has made it's way into iphonographers' hearts as a popular host for many sites. I've tested the Share Via: Tumblr feature out extensively and it works great! You can have it say whatever you would like, whether it's "processed with FX Photo Studio" or "My dog is silly!" you can update your Tumblr how you want, when you want, right from within the app!
So what do I think? I think this app is only getting better. At 2.99 some iphoneographers think that this may be a little pricey, but I think it is entirely worth it and especially now that you can download it over 3G! I don't think I'm ever going to stop putting the Dixon effect on every photo I take, just to see how much magic I can create!
(And hey! They have a contest going on right now! You can win a MacBook Air 11"! So go get the app, start processing and who knows? Maybe that 2.99 will get you a portable new toy!)

Also I really love that the followers I have (hi KC!) have been following my blog for so long. They have seen my hair when it was an inch long. And here I am, guarantee its at least 14 inches (that’s what she said). It’s like you guys are all proud parents. :)
Got a text message about my tax return. This is 2012 guys. We’re fucking alive right now.
Sitting on the couch last night drinking beers and playing resident evil. It’s astounding how much the little things like an arm draped over your leg make you feel cared for.
at this point it’s like telling you i changed my home phone number
that being said, if you want my new email address ask me.
Meteor Showers 2012
A calendar of all the major meteor showers taking place in 2012 that I drew up.
Of course, this isn’t all of the meteor events this year. Only the ones with the best chance of being visible. I chose only events with a Zenith Hourly Rate (ZHR, the number of peak events per hour) above 10. You should also consider the moon phase for that date, which I did not include.
How to use this:
- The date on the left is the early morning after midnight on the day it will peak (so “October 7” is between midnight and sunrise on the morning of the 7th).
- The constellation represents the point in the sky that the shower will “originate” from.
- Choose someplace dark, away from city lights, and bring a blanket and a friend.
- Enjoy.
To calculate the sunrise/sunset for your area on a specific date, go here. Many more details about each event can be found in this summary from EarthSky. Some events will favor the North or South Hemispheres, but such is life.
Feel free to distribute freely!
