Insanely cool shots of stylist Lucia Liu’s work in 2010. From here.

My interview with filmmaker Charles Lanceplaine for Paper Magazine is up.

Here’s a bit from our interview:

What’s the best thing about being a filmmaker in China at the moment?

In Shanghai I would say there are two scenes: the people who are at all events and pretending to be cool (those are mostly foreigners) and the others, the people who are actually not at every party and who are actually pushing the scene. There are so many of them: Nini & Gregor at Idlebeats; Chacha, the singer of AM 444; Benoit Florencon, a French photographer who has been extensively documenting the music scene; Ka Xiaoxi. a local photographer, Keflione and Dezio, who are both really good street artists, to name a few.

Shanghai is really a place where with very little means you can make things happen. There is a very do-it-yourself culture out here. There are no real barriers if you really want to do something.

Of course there always some touchy subjects you must avoid (if you do not want to get shut down) but as long as you don’t cross certain boundaries, it’s pretty safe.

Beautiful

“Icelandic contemporary composer Ólafur Arnalds created and released a new song, one per day for a whole week during the month of October 2011. The songs were recorded and filmed live in the living room of his Reykjavik apartment.”

Incredible photos! Aerial photography by astronaut André Kuipers. Check out his shots from space of Ireland, Paris at night, the Somalian desert, the Sahara, Tibet, the Australian outback and Dubai! http://t.cn/zOQ4NgK

Masters on 45s by Tamir Sher. Stunning.

“I took my old record player and decided to use it in my work before I throw it away. I put a reproduction of an old masters paintings and super heroes dolls on it and take pictures in a variable speeds.

The low-tech record player connect and mix between iconics masters painting and digital contemporary photography to Create new representation.”

Garance in Tokyo is always a good thing. I love these shots.

My interview with Beijing-based (and brilliant) animation artist, Lei Lei, for Paper is up now. Take a few minutes to check out his work!

I beg young people to travel. If you don’t have a passport, get one. Take a summer, get a backpack and go to Delhi, go to Saigon, go to Bangkok, go to Kenya. Have your mind blown. Eat interesting food. Dig some interesting people. Have an adventure. Be careful. Come back and you’re going to see your country differently, you’re going to see your president differently, no matter who it is. Music, culture, food, water. Your showers will become shorter. You’re going to get a sense of what globalization looks like. It’s not what Tom Friedman writes about; I’m sorry. You’re going to see that global climate change is very real. And that for some people, their day consists of walking 12 miles for four buckets of water. And so there are lessons that you can’t get out of a book that are waiting for you at the other end of that flight. A lot of people—Americans and Europeans—come back and go, ohhhhh. And the light bulb goes on.

Henry Rollins (via creaturefearrr)

It blows my mind when people say they have never had a passport or even traveled and seen more than their hometown/neighboring State. Yet they get paid occasionally and spend money on things they’ll forget soon. A passport for U.S. Citizens costs ONLY $135. You can travel anywhere and everywhere with it. The first step is always getting the passport, then you’ll experience magic.

(via cmirir)

Travel is by far the best education money can buy.

Truth is we were never cool-hunters. We were always more interested in pointing our finger at what was going to last, not pass in the beat of an eyelash. The search for quality goes on unabated, especially in these times of quantity. ” -David Hershkovits, Paper Magazine

Somehow, after a Ruby Pseudo post I did, I met David on Facebook a few years back. Finally, I had the chance to meet up with David this week in New York. Needless to say (truly) he’s such a brilliant, brilliant guy.

Over kimchi and bibimbap, we circled around ideas of what digital actually might mean for most of us at the moment, and his thoughts on The Death of Cool. Check out his piece here.

I think the death of cool could be a very good thing for all of us.

Better still, is a few perfect hours trading ideas with David.

Happy Memorial Day weekend, everyone! (What are you doing? Are you staying in NYC? If so, read our guide to all of the mega fun things going on around town.) We're taking Monday off to drink in the sun all day, blast "Call Me Maybe," and remember our servicemen and women who fight for our asses. This includes our 90-year-old grandpa, who served in Iwo Jima and regularly sends us Facebook messages about celebrities he likes (Lady Gaga) and doesn't like (Kirstie Alley). Love you, Gramp! See you on Tuesday.

2. Andrew WK has written a super-funny round-up of "Rookie Party-Thrower Mistakes." For instance: "I love cats. They have soft paws, funny claws, and fresh faces. They also pounce on bugs and play with them. I once saw a cat press down on a bug's body until it was completely flat. I love dogs too. They have smiling faces, wagging tails, and nice fluffy flanks for petting, patting, and stroking. However, too many of these beasts are crazed with foam rabies -- and that can turn a party into the petting zoo from hell." [via Flavorwire]

It's Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial milestone where it's acceptable to wear white, put your swim trunks on and start wearing Sperry's again. It's also the time to get your bikini'ed bum out to the Rockaways and start drinking.

To start the day out, stop at Rippers (the Meat Hook and Roberta's collab outpost) and grab yourself a fresh (virgin) cucumber and mint juice. Tip in a flask full of gin, add some soda water, and you've got an afternoon road soda. Settle into the sand and crack a couple of undercover beers bought at the bodega on the way out. Swig a quarter real quick and then drop in a an ounce of lime juice, dash in some hot sauce and you've got a makeshift michelada. If you want to cool off and need the real thing, stop up at Low Tide and grab a picnic table and a shandy with the rest of the sun-baked, sandy New Yorkers. A chocolate-dipped, pretzel dusted frozen banana from Motorboat and the Big Banana will go very well with that ice cold shandy you just ordered. Sample the stand's fried fish and then move on down the beach to Caracas for some early evening arepas and tall, iced glasses of tropical rum cocktails (yes, you can have an umbrella). Come twilight, if your thirst has not yet been sated, take your pink cheeks straight into Irish Circle for a couple of pints and a taste of the Rockaways' local nightlife (live music, underage drinking, overage drinking and trivia nights are all possibilities).

Welcome to PAPERMAG's horoscopes for hipsters, in which we tell you what's in the (wrist tattoo) stars.

With Mercury in retrograde, hipster Geminis should splurge with a spree at Opening Ceremony (FYI: Rachel Comey jumpsuits are on sale). But steer clear of the DiG show tonight at Glasslands; that skeevy bartender from Commodore will be there. Also be warned that someone is going to try to borrow something near and dear to you over Memorial Day weekend -- maybe your first-pressing Unknown Pleasures LP or your Santa Cruz skateboard. Don't overreact -- there are plenty of wheelie-boards and Joy Division records to go around in Bushwick.

Beth Ditto on Karl Lagerfeld, who recently called Adele "a little too fat" before apologizing: "First of all, Karl Lagerfeld is not even sane. Second of all, he's not the end-all, be-all of what he does. He's really talented, but that doesn't mean he's right. Third, Karl Lagerfeld used to be this really fat, eccentric dude. He always had that fat kid fan with him too. To me, only a person who was fat could get away with saying something like that." Love huh. [Vulture via Fashionista]

Welcome to Trailer Trash, highlighting the best, worst and so-so in new movie trailers.

No, that's not a hologram of River Phoenix. Dark Blood is actually the actor's last unreleased film, and it looks like it will finally see the light of day in September. Phoenix, who had already starred in several films including Stand By Me and My Own Private Idaho, died in L.A. on October 31, 1993, while working on this one and somehow director George Sluizer has found a way to finish it. Phoenix plays a recluse who lives in the desert, but his idle life is interrupted when a Hollywood couple's (played by Judy Davis and Jonathan Pryce) car breaks down and their paths cross. Sluizer, however, needs some extra funds to complete the film (here's the fund-raising site) and plans to premiere Dark Blood at the Dutch Film Festival in September. [Via TheDailyWhat]

One wonders how such a bizarre show made it so far uptown. Will Eno's Title and Deed, now playing at the brand new Pershing Square Signature Center, is what you might get if Eugène Ionesco and Steven Wright teemed up to pen a Tony Award acceptance speech for Mark Rylance. (If you got that last sentence, you'll really love this show.) This one man 70-minute performance is equal parts comedy and tragedy. Did it have us rolling in the isles chortling with existential laughter or where we board to tears? Watch the full review to find out.

Hey sailor! This week marks New York City's annual Fleet Week, when our nation's brave and honorable boys and girls get to partay. City establishments have always been welcoming to visiting sailors with deals, sales, and free drinks. And with this year's historic repeal of Don't Ask Don't Tell, some of the Navy's newly out and proud enlistees can really do it up in NYC. Here is a list of fun bars, nightclubs and to-dos to hit up this weekend for some beefcake fun. (And, for the ladies, we also recommend Henrietta Hudson's, The Cubby Hole, the Wild and Free Boat Ride, Hot Rabbit at Nowhere Bar, Plan B at One Last Shag, Girlnation at Bread and Tulips and Fusion at Club Insomnia.)

Friday night:

XL's Fleet Week Party (512 West 42nd St.)

This Hells Kitchen super club is having its very own Fleet Week celebration. This party will surely give these Navy boys the gay disco experience they certainly don't get at sea.

Do Ask, Do Tell at La Bottega (363 West 16th St.)

The Maritime Hotel's La Bottega is serving up special Do Ask, Do Tell Cocktails (stoli peach and orange juice) all weekend (and the hotel has specials, too. Rooms are $99 for any active duty sailors in uniform during Fleet Week -- marked down from their usual $375-a-night rate. Hot damn!)

Top Gun screening on the Intrepid. (700 West 46th Street)

The gayest military movie of all time shown on New York's mightiest vessel? Yes.Please. Info here.

Saturday night:

East Village Bar-Hopping

Is there anything better than a good old fashioned bar crawl? Especially when it includes packs of young studs in tight uniforms roaming the street? Our suggestions: Eastern Bloc, Boiler Room, and of course The Cock!

Sunday night:

The Eagle Beer Blast (554 West 28th St.)

For the sailor who is also a leather enthusiast, a visit to The Eagle's legendary beer bust on their roof top is a must. Military guys may get a chance to give some orders for a change.  Eagle patrons really do love a man in uniform.

The smart (and foxy) music/fashion label, Kitsune, thinks you can't hear them. To solve the problem -- and to celebrate the release of their latest Kitsune America compilation album -- they're planning to install fifteen "Sound Graffiti" listening stations all around New York City (you can read all about Sound Graffiti here). Just plug in your headphones and you'll hear tracks from the new compilation, including Heartsrevolution, White Shadow, XXXChange and twelve other artists born in the U.S.A. The "Sound Graffiti" concept was the brainchild of NYC creative agency CNNCTD+. And what would all this be without a big party? That's happening at Santos Party House (96 Lafayette Street) on May 31st.

May 25, 01:20 PM

In 1988, a bunch of my friends and I rented a house out in Kismet on Fire Island. We headed out for our first Memorial Day weekend and, since we were first-timers, we didn't really know what to expect. Would there be drag queens on the boardwalk? Sex in the bushes? Drugs? The one thing that really comes to mind about that weekend was today's oldie-but-goodie, "Red Red Wine" by UB40. We heard it everywhere -- 24 hours a day. It was blasting out of every house, on every street. When we headed down to the only restaurant in town to have dinner, you guessed it, "Red Red Wine." BTW: The song was written and originally released by Neil Diamond in 1968, but UB40 "reggae-ified" it and added some new lyrics to their version. Have a great weekend!

Hamptons schmamptons. We're planning on staying in town for this upcoming glorious three-day weekend, and have put together a little guide for our fellow staycationers. Here are a bunch of things to do this weekend that we think sound like a real fun time.

FRIDAY, MAY 25th

Luna Park Opens: Head over to Coney Island, grab a Nathan's hotdog and hop on the Cyclone rollercoaster (though not necessarily in that order) because the amusement park officially opens today. [via Luna Park NYC]

Moonrise Kingdom Opens: Even if you're not able to make it to the beach this weekend, you can live vicariously through the characters in Wes Anderson's new flick about two kids who fall in love and run away on a remote New England island. [via Moonrise Kingdom]

Cabin Boy at 92Y Tribeca: In which Chris Elliott plays a staight-laced recent graduate of Fancy Lad Academy who ends up working on boat called the Filthy Whore. Also, David Letterman is in it! [92YTribeca]

Simian Mobile Disco at Webster Hall:
Memorial Day Weekend: trips to the beach, BBQ cookouts, fireworks and...an electro dance party?  While it may not sound as patriotic as hamburgers and apple pie, what better way to kick off a long weekend than with a concert?  And, besides, you'll have an extra day to recover. [via Webster Hall]

Le Bain's Rooftop Opens: Make your first summer Friday count with a little afternoon drinking at Le Bain, which will be open every day starting at 2 p.m. for the rest of the summer. They're kicking things off today with DJ sets by Chris Baio of Vampire Weekend, Autobot of Flosstradamus and Full Nelson. [StandardCulture

Top Gun screens on the Intrepid: We cannot think of a gayer way to ring in Memorial Day weekend. Wait, yes we can! Here's our Fleet Week Fun Guide for the gay sailor. [PAPERMAG]

Burberry Sale: Since Memorial Day officially means you can start wearing white, why not head over to Burberry to stock up on a chic summer wardrobe?  They'll be having a sale where you can find items 30-40% off. [via Mizhattan]

Ben Sherman Sale: Ben Sherman is having a Memorial Day "Weekend Shirt Sizzler" sale, starting today through Monday, in which all shirts are 30% off. Shirts!

Warriors and Vertigo at IFC Center: What shall it be? A '70s cult classic about warring New York City gangs with names like The Turnbull ACs and the Gramercy Riffs, or a 1958 Hitchcock melodrama gem about a retired police detective with a crippling fear of heights? Thankfully, you've probably got enough time this weekend to see them both -- they're screening tonight through Sunday. Vertigo also screens Monday morning. Breakfast and a movie! [IFC]

Hot Mom U.S.A. at Glasslands: Per the flyer for this party featuring DJ sets by Shiftee and RX: "Guns. Gators. Babes. Bass. America. It's the 1st Annual Hot Mom USA Memorial Day Weekend party." We're scared/intrigued! [Via Glasslands]

Take This Papermag Art Crawl, As Recommended by Gary Pini:
Head over to the High Line to check out the new gigantic mural, "Brandon Many Ribs," by French artist JR. You'll spot it up around 29th Street. Then walk up to 46th Street and Eighth Avenue where the Art Production Fund is hosting an installation by Kiki Smith called "Chorus." It's made up of stained-glass stars spread throughout an empty lot and Kiki says the piece is "a tribute to Josephine Baker."

On the Upper East Side, the Metropolitan Museum of Art (1000 Fifth Avenue @ 82nd Street) has a cool new temporary-architecture work by Tomas Saraceno called "Cloud City." The rooftop installation is composed of lots of interlocking geodesic pods that can can walk around in and get a great view of Central Park. Also, if you haven't already gone, Tom Sachs "Space Program: Mars" over at the Park Avenue Armory on Lexington and 67th Street is a must-see.

Over in Long Island City, PAPER's Monica LoCascio -- along with Daria Brit Shapiro -- curated a group show, "Cosmic Architecture," that's up at Artists Wanted Gallery (25-25 44th Drive, LIC, Queens). The show has works by Maya Hayuk, Matt Jones, Max Gleason and more and it's up until June 17. Unfortunatly, MoMa PS1 won't be starting their Saturday Warm Up series of parties until July 7, but you still have a chance to check out the works by Lara Favaretto, Max Brand, Rania Stephan and Francis Stark, all of which are up until the end of May.

Finally, head to the Museum of Sex (233 Fifth Avenue) for the interesting group show "F*ck Art." The museum invited 20 international street artists to show their existing work or to create new works on their third floor. You'll find several NSFW pieces by artists including AIKO, Mode 2, Rostarr, JMR and Miss Van.

May 24, 06:45 PM

[Via Glasslands

SATURDAY, MAY 26th

Start at Trash Bar to get zombie-ified or go across the street to Grand Victory for a free performance by Misfits cover band Skeletal Life. Beach Party with Tom Middleton and M.A.N.D.Y.:
Head to the Beekman Beer Garden Beach Club for a techno-house dance party. [via Village Voice]

Mets Vs. Phillies: What's more summery than watching a baseball game? Plus, the Mets-Phillies series is sort of intense right now, considering that the Mets swept the last Phillies series (the first time they've done so in six years). Hot dogs! Beer! Hopefully, sun! Go Mets! [VillageVoice]

The Goonies at Nitehawk:
In case Labyrinth sing-a-longs are not your thing, Nitehawk will also be screening beloved 80s classic, The Goonies. Rocky effing road. [via Nitehawk]

I was talking through a presentation with Nate and Callum the other day and we were talking about Nokia... Callum's comment 'yea, they're so reliable shottas use 'em' got me thinking... “The Unofficial Sponsor Of  London's Hipster Set, Available To The Public So Even The Uninvited Can Drink..
We know, we know, it's a long ting, but what party don't Red Stripe sponsor? So bored of Instagram and Hipstamatic shots of the same people, at the same places, drinking this same drink...  Forever associated with some moody collaborative project or some doomed retail space, Boxpark anyone?

2. BlackBerry

What it says. Simple.

May 24, 08:28 AM

So on a sunny day this week over lunch, the RPC team discussed what era we'd want to have lived in at the age we are now [if only it were that simple huh?]...
Enjoy.

Callum, 17
If I could grow up in any era I would pick the 80s cos I love the clothers and trainers from back then for example Sergio Tacchini, Fila and adidas Stan Smiths and going to football games were so much cheaper to now days and u just got a lot more for your money.

Ellie, 23
UK, Mid 60's to mid 70's for sure... I wanna be clad in chaos, draped in wonderful crap, wear Sedgwick-style makeup and for all that to be totally normal... I want to have been there at the Beatles gigs [and to have cried like a baby at them]. I also want to have been mates with my parents 'cause I reckon we'd have got on pretty good, and they really did look like they were having the best kind of fun.

Skout, 24
I would live in the 70's in the disco funk era, when furniture was designed to look like it was meant to be in a spaceship, and people wore zoot suits.
actually wait.. No I would be in the 80s in the Miami Vice error where everything was 80's art deco and looked like the Scarface set.

Stephen, 16
If I could pick any era for me to grow up in i would choose the early 90s the reason for this is because I would like to see how islington has changed over the passed few years especially my estate Andover would like to see how things like the parks have changed i would also like to see how holloway was back in them days and see what it looked like.

Tamika 22
I'd love to experience life in America in the late 1920's during the Harlem Renaissance. I'd listen to jazz, smoke cigars, drink until my heart's content and consistently look glamorous in my 'flapper-style' attire. Ladies became way more 'rebellious' in this era with shortened hemlines, red lipstick and androgynous hairstyles. This was a massively important time to be of African-American heritage too. Marcus Garvey was leading a movement that inspired the civil rights campaign decades later, Louis Armstrong was becoming a highly respected artist and Bojangles started to pioneer a completely new style of tap dancing: all of these artists helped to instill a sense of pride in times of mad prejudice. This era was full of cultural change, new ways of thinking and curiosity. Nice nice. I'd drop myself out just before the 'Great Depression' and definitely come back to 2012 appreciating the freedom, equality and rights I have now, for sure...

Roxy, 25
The roaring twenties, probably in America... either New York, Chicago or Atlantic City. Jazz music, prohibition, flappers, women had social lives, it was perfectly acceptable to wear bright red lipstick all day everyday, men dressed like men and no one knew or cared how bad smoking was for them...

Jamie, 25
1966-71 ...  Swinging 60’s, Woodstock, world cup in 66’, living during the cold war, music, hunter s thompson, summer of love, psychadelic drugs, see the transition into disco and the death of the american dream

Sophie, 22
Definitely 90s! Purely because of the fashion... And TV shows. Jelly shoes! And Kelly from Saved by the Bell was amazing in her high waisted floral jeans and belly tops. Moesha looked pretty cool too when her hair was in braids (my friend did her hair like it recently looked amazing). And Clarissa always had cool earrings. And Mariah Carey. Also tamogotchies (is that how you spell it?) Not forgetting 'the big five' supermodels were at large in 90s. As long as people wernt still wearing shoulder pads I think everyone in the 90s looked great.

Nate, 23
I would have liked to have been in my early 20's in the 1920's.... the speakeasy look like such a vibrant fun place to be. Also the fashion dudes just rolling around in suits and fedora caps, tap dancing was being revolutionised by black dancers. Though the times were pretty corrupt, I think you'd find me in the corner of a Chi speak easy with a chick in a feather boa.

Shaun, 27
Obviously this is, by its very nature, massively hypothetical so I'm going to assume you get all the good shit from the era and less of the war, social-ills, witch-burning and civil unrest that accompanies all periods in time (well witch burning is somewhat niche these days). I'd go for either New York/London in the late 80s early nineties. If only for the raves (probably the last bonafide socialised music movement) but try and avoid turning into one of those acid veterans you see knocking about. But much that. Similarly everyone had shit haircuts which is definitely something I can back.

The good folk over at BNTL have teamed up with sportswear giant Nike on The Chance  an international competition that gives ambitious young football talent an opportunity to play on the big stage and be recognised and scouted by the biggest clubs and coaches on the planet.

In addition to this they've got six reporters to document the journey of these young footballers. The 6 reporters consist of Photographers and Videographers whose work will be judged by mentor Neil Bedford and the legendary Spike Lee.  Rubypseudo have been lucky enough to have worked with 4 of the chosen reporters on a number of occasions, yeah our network is pretty sick right?

Glade, the electronic music festival set in the Norfolk countryside, are collaborating with the guys at Secret Arts to source the most talented live illustrator in the U.K to get creative at this years festival. We urge anyone in our network of talented young folk to apply for this as it will be a great platform to showcase your extraordinary work. The details are below;
Glade Festival is inviting one artist or an art collective to attend the festival over the weekend of the 14th-17th June, 2012 to create live art. Glade will provide a 16ft by 8ft primed wall which will act as the canvas for the weekend ensuring the final piece is seen by 10,000 'Gladers' attending the festival.
Artists must submit a JPEG file showcasing the artwork that they plan to produce. The judges are looking for original, iconic, clean line submissions which show legs to evolve over the weekend. Inclusion of both music and performance, as part of the submission, will naturally add to the entertainment of a live show. Artists are encouraged to outline any extra additions they plan to bring them to the table.
The individual artist or collective will receive all necessary support required for production of the project but will be required to bring their own materials to create the piece. In addition, the winner will receive:
  • Up to five free tickets to Glade Festival 2012*
  • A feature in the Glade Festival 2012 programme
  • Exposure across Glade Festival's social media channels
  • A profile blog post article about them on secretarts.co.uk
One runner up, as selected by Glade Festival, will receive a pair of tickets (valued at £135) to the festival.
Submit by 29th May here , and the winner will be announced on June 8th.
Good luck!

These times, if you had a Teardrop Nokia  you were doing a lot of things...
May 18, 05:42 AM

Back in the day, BlackBerry's PR agency appeared to fly someone over to the UK from [either] Chicago or Seattle to basically, 'take me out to a fancy place, get me drunk, and then find out why kids were using BlackBerrys' or some quote like that... I remember laughing out loud - it was all a little un-necessary - and having got said drinking 'partner' to add his 14 year old daughter on BBM, I went on to explain it was basically the free-ness, instancy and 'read receipt' joy of it all that had kids hooked...

Since then, the levels of appropriation kids have applied to BlackBerry's Messenger [BBM], is incredible... With BB broadcasts they are able to send they can ask about homework, if someone knows when the next bus is due to Stockport, or simply let each other know about nights and guest-lists... With the arrival of status pictures and updates, new manners and morals appeared too... A black square, instead of a picture, means they are moody/pensive/upset and essentially, want to be left the fuck alone. A status picture is also often accompanied by <<<; and a comment, which essentially references/explains the image...  Broadcasts and statuses allow them to gather guest-lists, sell drugs, let people know about their relationship status, or just canvas opinions... We've seen kids asking - via statuses - whether they should be buying Vans or Converse, Nike or adidas, or just what to watch at the cinema... They may also be games [shit games], gossip, destructive or just plain fucking flirty... They spread news too, [I found out about Amy Winehouse dying through BBM] often far more instantly than Twitter for these teens; football scores are posted so instantly that for anyone missing the match they have to change their status to let others know they don't want the results ruined for 'em...
And so, with this rise, comes the rise of BBM ranters and ravers tribes, which Callum - our work experience rascal - and the team have gathered together...

THE GASSMAN
The Gassman constantly chats about how hard he is, but can usually be found at home typing on his BB rather than out causing some kinda genuine trouble and/or picking up chicks/fights/raising from Sainsburys. Essentially, it's a damned front... You keep updating dear, does your mum know you're a 'boss man' by the way and have you tidied your room yet? LOL etc....
"If i dont go jail, or end up dead, im going to be rich"
"I just want to see you strip"
"You a boss, so you need a boss chick"
"I live bi the road and die by the road. YOLO"

THE ATTENTION SEEKER
The Attention Seeker uses classic reverse psychology moves mixed with more than a modicum of crying wolf... 'No more bbs please!', 'Untick me!',  demand the statuses, when actually - anything but's gonna happen as friends ask if everything's alright and wassup etc... ['Oh nothing', they BB back, as the concerned audience check in...] Adept at seeking a reaction on BBM, the Attention Seekers are king & queens of deleting sprees and pretend contact editing, thus keeping everyone one tenter hooks as to whether they get 'kept' or not...
"No more bbs pls. fed up of this shit"
"Deleting spree :)"
"i'm moving out"
"Comin off BB for a while, no messages"

THE VAGUE VENTER
The Vague Venter is someone who clearly has got something to say but doesn't quiiite like to let on what it is they're so darned vexed about about. They're a perculiar BBM user as - unlike The Attention Seeker - their aim isn't to cause a reaction from the peers on their contact list, just simply to keep 'em guessing... Get to the darn point...
"So what append there"
"That was odd, imagine that"
"WTF?!?"
"Yea, I know lol"
"FUCK U"

THE JOHNNY NO-MATES
The Johnny No-Mates appears to have no qualms whatsoever about being massively vociferous about the fact they're doing nothing, with no-one, no where in particular. Always.
"Someone pop up. On bus"
"Someone talk"
"Doing nothing. YOLO"
"Someone come pub. Anyone."
"No BBs, VN*s" [then 5 minutes later] "OK you can BB if u want 2"
*A VN is a voice note, we like to use them to professionally send fart notes to each other. Yea, we're cool...

THE DAMN MUNDANE
The Damn Mundane moniker speaks for itself. Here we have a BB user who insists upon updating us on their every movement, however mundane... Some are so clock-work we've started telling the time by them ... [We're not sure if they do so in order to pass some unfilled time, or indeed whether they think the world is actually interested, but seriously, Chinese every night at 8pm and then bed? Jeeeeeez....]
"En route gym"
"En route shopping"
"Taking alfie for a swim :) ;) ;-)"
"Chinese, then bed me thinks! ;)"
"Found a pound on the floor YES"
"Lost my Oyster. Walking".
"Awake"
"Goin bed"

THE BOYFRIEND BORE
The Boyfriend Bore is the BB raver who HAS A BOYFRIEND AND LOVES THEM LOADS OMG <3 [heart, heart, smiley face, love-struck emoticon, said boyfriend's name set up as a status whenever possible etc]... If you and your boyfriend are really that good, then stop wasting your time telling/showing us, and enjoy the time you have together, [our bets are on he's sleeping with your best mate anyway...] Eeek...
"Nandos with my baby"
"My babes here"
"Love my babe"
"in bed cuddling with ___ :) :) :) I LOVE HIM <3 <3 <3 :)"
"Danny just farted"

THE EXCITED SOCIALITE
The Excited Socialite spends so much time telling the world how busy and popular they are, you can't help but wonder whether the fun they're having is particularly worth shouting about. I dunno about you, but when I'm having THE BEST NIGHT OUT EVER, I'm usually having far too much fun to update my BB dear... Shut up.
"omyg yess im going out 3 nites in a row hahaha"
"Bring on tonight! Yay!"
"Needed this girly catch up!"
"Having the best time EVEEER"
"So durunk, I LOVE MY FRIENDS"

THE LIFE COACH
Ahhh, The Life Coach, the self proclaimed philosopher, wisdom of all wisdoms, ..... Whilst these status' are completely harmless, they can get a bit much. Food for thought has it's right time/place, but please don't make me reflect on everything I do, you're a much better person than I am, clearly.
"knowing when I'm weak is when I'm really being strong"
"Agree to disagree"
"Love is real"
"A man that learns from his mistakes is a tru man"
"true friends will never let u down"
"pray to god 4 he will listen 2 u always"
"BB me your problems so I can help"
"remember to breathe"

THE KMT-er
The Kissing-My-Teeth BB user is constantly ranting, constantly angry, and genuinely at odds with the world... He hates you, he hates his mum, he hates his life, he can't believe he's being made to go to school and you, by the way, are a dick. Enough said. Cheer up chicken.
"Can never get to sleep KMT"
"My friends are so boring KMT"
"My mum is a dick"
"Fuck all that shit you're all talking about"
"Fuck the police"
"Fuck you"
"Fuck"

Nine-year-old Martha Payne from Argyll in Scotland began writing a blog providing a first-hand view of school lunches last week. NeverSeconds started as a writing project with her Dad and the blog, featuring photos, reviews and ratings, has received a large amount of online and press attention from around the world...

NeverSeconds has had almost 400,000 visitors and celebrity chef Jamie Oliver even tweeted: “Shocking but inspirational blog. Keep going, big love from Jamie x.” The blog includes photographs of Martha’s daily £2 lunch, along with a review for each meal, a rating of how good it tastes on the ‘Food-o-meter’, the number of mouthfuls and even a health rating.

Here's an excerpt from the young foody's blog...

Today I had vegetable soup and sausages with roast potatoes and salad. The lady on the radio said I had a choice everyday of mini tomatoes and watercress, but I have never seen them. My soup tasted of mainly carrot but i am not sure. I had three wee roast potatoes which were a bit small and the sausages are very different to the ones I get at home. They are very crispy on the outside and the texture is like a baked potato.

Food-o-meter- 8/10
Mouthfuls- I must take a pad to keep tally!
Courses- starter/main
Health Rating- 6/10
Price- £2

Tomorrow sees the first collaboration between the two Goliaths of the free-music-continuum Spotify and Last.FM. They're coming together to launch the Kopparberg Festival Player App. Paid for by Sweden's premier  fruit cider, the project looks to harness Spotify's vast bank of undervalued and (basically) royalty free music and partner it with Last.FM's discovery technology. The App allows one to:

"browse a selection of festival artists using a navigational slider which uses Last.fm’s huge banks of scrobbling data to classify the line-up from the more un-established acts to the festival headliners.  The user then selects three artists and the app processes these choices to generate a bespoke Spotify playlist. The playlists will be permanently showcased on the Facebook app, so that new users immediately get a sense of what is trending."

The idea seems to be providing a useful try-out service to aid the ceremonial umming and ahhhing over which artist to see, when and where; and probably nudge a few people to check out the experimental Lithuanian-post-chillwave-collective playing on the Sandles & Socks Esoteric Stage on a Saturday afternoon. Who will then presumably display their noted discernment through a casual Facebook share. An interesting partnership if only for the players involved. Great for music fans and narcissists alike.

A place of refuge to have an afternoon map in a metropolis is becoming more and more common. We have seen the Japanese sleep capsules and the sleep pods in London, and NYC has joined the slumber party with a distinct new twist that has been implemented by furniture store Coco-Mat in New York's SoHo district.
Try-before-you-buy is the mantra at Coco-Mat, and they have designed spaces within their outlets that resemble hotel rooms where customers can have a snooze for a few hours in a king-size bed with fresh linen, drink fresh fruit juice, and listen to soothing music, all complimentary.
Coco-Mat founder Paul Efmorfidis said: “I have no trouble if they misuse [the service]. If you come here with your friends for a handful of naps and don’t buy anything, that’s OK.” His believes that the free service will help generate a buzz around the store and that the next time people need a mattress, the first place they will think of is COCO-MAT. Customers can book themselves into the sleep suite or walk in if it is vacant. I wouldn't recommend not booking a hotel on your next trip to the big apple, but it's definitely worth a visit for a little nap.

Nate, Callum, our intern and I discuss our thoughts on the Ralph Lauren clothing brand. The following post details my fascination with the brand and it's cultural significance.

I've always worn Ralph Lauren, or since I was very young. My dad wears it too, and I associate it with dressing smartly.

Also being quite tall, Ralph Lauren has always had very long shirts which suited me well.

Other than this I was always fascinated by the more playful Ralph Lauren prints such as the teddy bear and nautical themes. My dad would wear these kinds of patterns and then I began to see the gear in the music videos of rappers I looked up to such as Raekwon, Ghostface, Grand Puba and even Kanye West. The fact that these rappers wear Ralph Lauren, added credibility to the brand and made me want to wear it even more. These rappers were acquiring Ralph Lauren clothes and wearing them in their own context eg: yacht and sailing jackets miles away from any water. Clothes that were intended for polo clubs and houses in the Hamptons, were being flaunted in the ghettos of New York and Philadelphia. This made it feel alright for me to wear Ralph Lauren, it was like validation.

Then I found out about the Lo Lifes, a New York gang, who's sole purpose was to acquire as much Ralph Lauren apparel, by any means necessary, illegal or legal. I found I could relate to this group because I also collected Ralph Lauren and was deeply into hip-hop culture. The fact that there were large groups of people who's lives revolved around what many view as a preppy brand fascinated me. These groups of men were willing to risk their lives and freedom to get as much rare Ralphy gear as possible. Their expensive clothes are symbols of status, power and their ability to acquire such goods. These men have tattoos, slang and music about the brand, I have no doubt young men have died for rare Ralph pieces. And all this goes on without any recognition or endorsement from Mr. Lipschitz AKA Ralph Lauren the man who started the brand. Whilst brands such as Tommy Hilfiger have capitalized on their "urban" consumers, Ralph Lauren has never really interacted with the hip-hop world. And maybe rightly so, perhaps its Mr. Lipschitz' aloofness and disconnect that supplies the brand with such lofty status, and allows it to remain aspirational.

Whilst rappers like Raekwon, Grand Puba and Thirstin Howl of the Lo Life crew were more popular in the 90's, Polo references in rap nowadays are incredibly frequent. For example, the rapper Vado, from the Dipset crew in Harlem has a hit record called 'POLO', the entire song a dedication to love for the brand. Similarly the rapper Young Dro has a similar ode to the brand called 'Polo Down'.

Another rapper called Smoke DZA, is known to wear only Ralph Lauren has a song called Ralph Lipschitz, a dedication to the brand. In the video for this song, he and his crew, appear to be indulging in the pastime known as 'boosting' which means to steal as much as you can in a large group. Rappers like Smoke DZA and Vado are continuing the tradition of wearing brands such as Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger, Nautica and Bennetton. Brands that when they were designed weren't necessarily intended for inner-city youths.

In the same way brands such as Burberry have been re-appropriated by "chavs" in the UK as signifiers of wealth and status, Ralph Lauren is similarly a signifier of wealth and taste. The brand has associations of yachts, country clubs, horses, things which are all a million miles away from the harsh realities of inner-city life.

Nowadays I feel that there are three types of Ralph Lauren consumer. There is the casual wearer, who might pick up a shirt or two. There is the collector who is more interested in rarer, classic vintage pieces that are harder to come by. Then there is the goon, who wears the latest Ralph Lauren as a symbol of wealth and status. It is common for these groupings to overlap.

Although Ralph Lauren rarely market directly to young people or their "urban" and hip-hop consumers, they are aware that such people wear their clothes. This is evident in their rebranding of their POLO brand. Last year Ralph Lauren announced they would stop making the POLO brand and just continue to make Ralph Lauren, and higher end labels such as RRL and Ralph Laren Purple Label and their RUGBY brand. It is my belief that Ralph Lauren is trying to divide their consumers into two segments: one that only buy high end, expensive Ralph Lauren and then those that buy RUGBY, which is aimed at the younger more urban consumer. Perhaps because deep down someone at Ralph Lauren, maybe even Ralph himself doesn't really want rappers and the like sporting and defining their brand.

Nate Anidugbe

I'm not the biggest fan of Ralph Lauren. When I was younger I used to see it on all the cockney kids in my area. I couldn't afford it at that time so I guess I just decided to ignore it. However that was just the Polo tops and caps I was seeing, now a days I guess I see a lot more of their old stuff, like the Polo rugbys and varsity jackets which I like a lot more... I guess its from being around Nick and the Piff Gang lot, since they sort of live in RL. I think if I was going to buy some Ralph it would be some old bits from Seth, even though it would be a bit more expensive and harder to get, I think a lot of it is much nicer.

Callum Richards

Well I think Ralph is a good brand. These days everyone is wearing it and it's good in some ways but bad too because a tramp can justy buy a ralph top and make the brand look bad. I feel when you go in to the Ralph shop the staff are looking at you as if to say why are you in here but they might not know that most young people own at least one item. I think that the older ralph stuff is a lot better then the new shit because of the quality of the clothes is so much better and you don't see everyone wearing the same shit as you as its much harder to find. I like the old look of it because some of the bits are older than me and I think its quite cool wearing something older then you. One of the bad thing about new ralph is the price of it because some things are worth the money but then some things are just a bump. One good thing though is they're always bringing out new thing so the shit that you wanted that you thought were over price will drop in price as it's not new anymore.

Apple's domination of and influence on the communications, technology and entertainment industry is fairly obvious, but some of the statistics stated below are quite staggering. Apple recently overtook Enron as the largest company by market capital, and they recently announced that they will be issuing a dividend to it's stockholders, which is expected to generate roughly $10 Billion in it's first year. The infographics below identify just how big this Apple is in real world terms.

Apple's total sales in 2011 were $128 Billion, which is more than the GDP of about 160 nations around the world;

Apple reportedly sold 3 million units of their latest iPad in the first 72 hours of release;

Tempz For Mayor

Grime MC Tempa T of Next Hype fame, is running for London mayor, releasing a manifesto pledge each week for the past few weeks. Tempz is almost looking like a convincing alternative to Borris and Ken! Hopefully this will encourage some young people to be more engaged politically.

Converse Block Party

Shoe brand Converse and JD, to promote a recent collaboration, hosted an MC battle in three cities around the UK which culminated in a special block party on Sunday, where grime legends such as D Double E and Wiley performed. A clever campaign to raise the shoes awareness amongst JD consumers and grime fans.

Prometheus - TED Clip

This clip from the forthcoming film 'Prometheus' by Ridley Scott which is meant to be a prequel to the Alien films depicts a TED talk in the year 2023. We are big fans of TED at Ruby Pseudo, and this fictional version of a TED talk is not only great promotion for the film but an interesting vision of how TED talks may look in the future.

Wagon Wheel - The Truth Is Out There

I'm not sure if its all the recent sci-fi/alien/werewolf/vampire malarky going on in the movie and television world at the moment, but when this advert came on before The Avengers 3D [yes, I enjoyed it thoroughly] on a big screen at the cinema, all my childhood came rushing back to me. This was not a good thing. Wagon Wheel's were round tablets of mallowy jammy goodness - This advert doesn't do them justice. And I'm sure we'll see these kids, in 10 years time, on Bid.TV, wishing they had never signed up to do the Wagon Wheel adverts. Shame.

Skechers - Go Run

I know this is a fairly old advert, previewing at the Superbowl on February 5th, but it should have stayed there. Again, I caught this at the cinema before my geek out at The Avengers [still, it's pretty good]. It's full of American atrociousness. Damn that little French bull dog wearing ugly sneakers.

May 10th marks the first day of the City Portraits Instagram/Twitter Challenge from ellesse Heritage.
ellesse Heritage only recently launched ‘City Portraits’, a series of short films following creatives from three major cities – Berlin, london and New York. You can watch the aforementioned films here...
The idea of the challenge is to take a photo a day and each photo to follow the ‘theme of the day’. The themes can be interpreted however you creatively see fit, and that is the fun bit, these are your photos, so make them of whatever you choose and then share them with everyone else taking part.
Targeted at Instagram users, although this concept works perfectly direct with twitter, ellesse are asking for a photo a day influenced or inspired by what ever theme is planned and then uploaded with either the city portraits hashtag (#CityPortraits) or @ellesseheritage or both.
Day one starts today (May 10th). If you wish to take part, feel free and follow the themes above. To follow what images are uploaded keep an eye on #CityPortraits and @ellesseheritage.
I found out about this competition via my good friend Henry Houdini an avid instagram fiend, who told me to get involved. I just might as I find this one of the more exciting social media fixations at the moment, I'm still quite intrigued to see what changes will occur now that Facebook has purchased the platform.

So MasterNath, AKA The Instant Classic, AKA Urban Articulations [in his words, 'the man who's had more name changes than Prince'], is going to be working at the Olympics this summer, well done him... He approached us about the possibility of writing about his experience over the summer, so here it is, and there he goes... Wish our boy luck...

So, this summer I'll be diving into the pool of Olympic spirit by working at the centre of all the action, the Olympic Village. And I am going to be sharing my experiences with you. Yes, you. Aren't you fortunate? Oh look, you're excited. I'm flattered. I'm supposedly working in a big canteen in the Village, exclusively for the atheletes. I use the word supposedly because after recieving conformation that I got the job way back in February, I've not heard from them since, apart from a text message to tell me there was 100 days left until the opening ceremony. What I do remember from my interview (which I aced) is that this is a 24/7 job, as the atheletes are hungry people. So that means I'll be working eight hour shifts day or night. And because I enthusiastically mentioned I am within walking distance from the Village, I'll probably be working nights. Joy. So that's literally all the information I have at the moment. I do hope you'll keep reading my entries over the next couple of months, think of them as the antidote to the Evening Standard's gushy articles about the Olympics. And also this will be a new experience for me as I'm not sporty and I've never had a job that involves food and standing for eight hours. Let's just hope I don't get the sack. Until next time...

[Image of the Ramos clock taken from here]

I'm a big fan of Uniqlo. They do a lot of the simple stuff really really well, such as plain tee's, underwear, etc. They should stick to their clothing, because their latest app is thoroughly annoying. They have collaborated with a Japanese composer by the name of Cornelius to create an app specially designed to wake you up in the morning with a song based around the time/date/weather. Sounds nice, it's not, it's bloody irritating, have a butchers.

The airline Lufthansa have done something similar, but way better. The Lufthansa 'Anywake' app was created by DDB Stockholm and Monterosa acts an alarm clock that plays the sounds of a randomly chosen city, if the user guesses correctly which city the sounds stem from, they are rewarded with discounted airline tickets to that destination. Again, have a look at the video to get a better idea.

Whilst I am most definitely not a morning person, I quite like the new Ramos clock created by paul Sammut. I hit the snooze button several times in the morning, cherishing those extra minutes in bed. However, as Ruby will testify, my punctuality is far from perfect. Enter the Ramos clock. In order to turn off this alarm, one must get up, walk to a defuse panel, and enter the clock's deactivation code. Once you're up, you're up. Great idea...but the price is a deterrent, as this clock will set you back $160. If you do have some cash to burn, you can order one from here.

It was, of course, with sadness that we had to hear the news about Maurice Sedank this week, but if there are people in this world who - when leaving it - are adamant to leave you in turn with a smile on your face, he was one of them... I love the idea of doing something so darn well that it makes people want to eat it. And, on a bit of a boring business note, it of course reiterates the value people, consumers, and fans place on being replied to... Bless.

Brazilian fashion retailer C&A has come up with an innovative idea to connect their social media presence with their actual physical stores and products. Their “Fashion Like” initiative works by C&A posting photos of a number of their products on their Facebook page and invites customers to “like” the ones that they, erm, like. Meanwhile, special hooks on the racks in their stores subsequently display those votes in real time, giving in-store shoppers a clear indication of each item’s online popularity. For many shoppers, it will give them that extra assurance and approval from their peers that what they are buying is actually nice. Nice.

Introduction From Ruby:
When I read about Homeboy Industries in Fast Company this month it resonated with me on SOOO many levels and indeed, is pretty similar to something I'm trying to set up here, albeit on a scale that is - for the moment - something we can only aspire too… Whilst I know we're gonna be talking a lot more about what we're getting up to, I thought we should kick the conversation off with a solemn salute [or nice knuckle knock] to Father Gregory Boyle and his gang of great homies [his words, not mine]… Sweeney's gonna tell you the tale, but in the meantime, keep buying that Salsa huh? Nice, nice, I love this... Pseudo x

Homeboy Industries: A Lesson In Belief

"Once he [Father Boyle] came across a brawl, the largest he had ever seen [of] 50-60 men, with baseball bats, blocking four lanes of traffic... He ran in to the middle of the mob and bellowed 'Put down the motherfucking bats!
[Taken from The House of Second Chances, an article by Douglas McGray for Fast Company Magazine]

People are not permanently or inherently criminal. The purpose of prisons and the justice system is to provide rehabilitation and to restore offenders back into society. Habitual offending - and the revolving door culture of prisons across the world - is a vicious cycle. To overcome this, we feel, it is essential that efforts are made to help people become helpful to society, as opposed to harmful. A key factor in doing this is, arguably, to help ex-offenders gain employment, and to feel helpful [not just helped] themselves...

The story of Father Gregory Boyle and The Homeboy industries is pretty special. A giant mural that spans half a block in a neighbourhood in East L.A depicts Martin Luther King, Emiliano Zapata, and, Father Boyle.  It's safe to say that Boyle is regarded as a local legend and a saint in Los Angeles, and this is due to his dedication and commitment to a project he founded back in 1992, Homeboy Industries. Boyle understood that one of the greatest problems in his community was the lack of work,
'especially for young men who had spent time in prison-and, by extension, a pervasive sense of hopelessness' [FC].

Father Boyle has a rather special connection with people in the community and beyond, and still resides in a humble converted garage with just enough room to sleep and read... He's put massive - and impressive - amounts of energy [and personal money] in to developing real, proper personal relations with people that others would turn their eyes from, those that are regarded as dangerous to society. He addresses them by 'son', 'kiddo', 'dawg' and 'mijo'. What started out as a small scale community operation has developed beyond belief. By 2010, Homeboy was the biggest gang-intervention program in the U.S, and hundreds of Boyle's "Homies" were employed in industries that range from cafe's to tattoo removal.

The initiative has had support from major players in the business community, politicians, and generous donors, because their is a great belief that Father Boyle's project is not just noble, but incredibly effective in creating jobs and transforming lives. A bakery closed in the community, so Homeboy Industries re-opened their own bakery. Essentially, they are creating industries where they are needed, and creating jobs for those that really need faith and capital invested in them. As Boyle explains:

'We don't hire homies to make bread. We bake bread to hire homies.'

Homeboy Industries is now a recognised brand with a strong identity and even stronger authenticity; something many brands still struggle to maintain...  One can find their logo on taco's and salsa across 250 Ralph's supermarkets in the US already, with plans to expand even further... They have a cafe at City Hall, and are making plans to have a cafe at L.A International Airport too, it's inspiring.

The passion, belief, and faith that has been invested into these project by Father Boyle and his unlikely crew of ex-offenders, businessmen and philanthropists have reinvigorated a sector of society that - to - many would appear to be a lost cause.

This notion of connecting positive and productive rehabilitation with industry and commerce is a concept that is currently being identified in the U.K too. Even the front page of today's Metro reads;

"It's not just a jail...It's an M&S jail with prisoners and workers"

Whilst, of course, there's much to discuss, argue and debate around initiatives like the new one M&S are considering, we feel it's time worth taking to talk... For the time being, Father Boyle, we Pseudo Salute You.

Nice.

As part of the launch of TFL’s March road safety campaign, they have partnered with Live Magazine to save thousands of teenagers, through an innovative game that will engage over 300,000 Live readers. The game has proven highly effective in improving road safety.
The game is hosted directly on Live Magazine’s website and is aimed at getting 11-14-year-olds to look out for their mates on the road. By playing the game, users are taught essential road survival skills, and due to the addictive nature of it, core messages are inherently embedded in the user's mind. Users also have a chance to win tickets to this year’s Underage Festival including freebies from Cineworld and other prizes from We7.com, Nickelodeon and MTV.
258 young people are killed or injured on London’s road every year than any other type of injury, making this game the first of it’s kind to make a huge and rewarding impact on young lives.
Of the research on conducted by Live, 92% of interviewees said that the game ‘made them think differently about crossing the road when with mates’ and 85% said they ‘were more likely to consider using a zebra crossing next time they cross the road’.

-  Live Magazine is hosting the game until Sunday 6th May in a dedicated
microsite .

-  Users who complete the game will 100% win a prize. It takes roughly 20 minutes on average to get to the end of the game.

Shoe brand Converse recently sponsored the Fader Fort at the SXSW festival in Austin, Texas. The festival, which covers music, film and technology sees some of the hottest artists of the day performing there, including rappers such as 2 Chainz and Rick Ross.

Fader in conjunction with the brand were on hand to interview artists and document the festival with photos and live footage of all the main performances. Converse also made use of the widespread use of online social networking at the festival by encouraging attendees to submit pictures of their Converse via twitter with the hashtag #converse.

A clever partnership that makes sense, Converse were able to directly target artists, festival-goers and those following the event online through the scheme and the Fader Fort site.

Also worth mentioning is the Converse Rubber Tracks studio in New York which we've spoken about before. Rapper Fresh Daily recently recorded his new album there, 'The Brooklyn Good Guy', a Converse logo clearly visible on the album artwork. Converse, it would seem are capitalizing on cool.

I met Lauren, 24, whilst studying in Melbourne, Australia, a few years ago. The pint-sized legend now lives in Sydney. She has a knack for abbreviating adjectives, doing the bird-dance, has a cavalier attitude to standing up whilst inebriated, and was given the nickname 'Winehouse' by Nicaraguan street gangs. We had a little catch up with her to see what's going on in Australia...

What are you doing with yourself at the moment?
I work part-time as a teacher at a Catholic boy's school. I have a performing arts degree but am doing zero with that right now. I think I may start doing it again as a hobby If I can grow the balls.

What's the best thing about being young in Australia?
I loved growing up on a farm. We got to ride the Utes and motorbikes around, build cubbies everywhere, go yabbying in the channels and dams and play with all the animals. It was very idyllic.

What would you say are the different 'tribes' that exist amongst Australian youth?
It's probably not as extreme as in the U.K, but the same kind of things. Footy Jocks, Emo's, Punks, Indie peeps, surfies, skegs (skaters), but, a lot of people cross between subcultures.

Do you associate any brands with these tribes?
Ummmm I associate rugby jumpers and shorts and shiny sports leggings with jocks. Anything from Hawaiian shirts to fancy moustaches and turtle shell spectacles with Indie peeps. Heaps of facial piercing and colourful hair and docs for punks. Stripes and black and dark makeup for the emo's. Beanies, layered shirts and long hair for the skegs. Roxy and Billabong for the surfies I guess.

In general, a lot of people are shopping online at asos. Zara has just opened a store in Sydney and Melbourne, so thats pretty popular. One Teaspoon and Tiger Lily are two brands that I see a lot around Sydney. Oh, and everyone has a pair of Vans.

Is it important to you that brands are environmentally friendly?
It's not essential but it's something I like to consider.

What's your favourite advert at the moment?
I love this ad for Toohey's beer. Beer ads are always the funniest.

In terms of music, which Australian acts are doing well at the moment?
Yacht Club. They have made a bril name for themselves in the last few years and are playing at good festivals.

Where are you going to source new music?
We just got our internet sorted and I didn't use it last year when I moved home so i'm a bit behind. I like to listen to new music on my fave radio station Triple J, but then I have to use iTunes to buy it which is the worst.

Without sounding like a wanker, what things are currently trending in Australia amongst the youth?
Heaps of people I know are reading Game of Thrones. Most of the people I know will be travelling overseas at some point this year. Dubstep has emerged in the last year or so to be more popular and well known.

Anything else you'd like to add about Ozzie youth culture?
Have you seen Bondi Hipsters? It says a lot about youth culture in metropolitan areas. So many people are wearing animal suits to festivals. It's a pisstake video, like your guys 'Being a Dickhead's cool'. So many people def do some of these things and it's so funny coz it's pretty true. It's a certain sterotype of the Indie/Hipster.

I have spent many an afternoon bored out of my mind in a queue at the post office. Whilst I would never consider 'going postal', the never-ending queue frustrates me greatly. I can appreciate this solution devised by the agency Dare and some students in Manchester.

They love a billboard in Shinjuku and Shibuya. We recently had the pleasure of seeing the big bright lights of Tokyo, and the hordes of hoarding that are ubiquitous there got us thinking about how effective these means of advertising can be. A billboard can have a big impact. Ostensibly equipped with witty slogans or striking visuals, some stand out more than others, striking a chord with passers by. We've picked out some of the most provocative and interesting billboards from across the globe.

[This is an ad for Anando Milk that purportedly gives you super powers...from McCann Erickson, Mumbai, India]

[The brutes at PowerHouse Gym teamed up with the clever folk at Savannah College of Art & Design in the U.S for this one.]

[Old Timer's eatery in Austria swallowed the market with a little help from the agency Demner, Merlicek and Bergmann]

[Saatchi & Saatchi New Zealand orchestrated this bloody good billboard a few years back for the t.v. network launch of Tarantino's Kill Bill]

[BBDO, UK, had their light bulb moment in their billboard for The Economist]

[An advertising school at Chosun University, South Korea, turned some heads with their billboard for Calvin Klein that transformed into a more fetching sight once the rain came down]

[Saatchi & Saatchi Indonesia ingeniously used communications cables to market a nose hair trimmer, nice.]

One of our updated Teen Commandments is 'Be Useful Everyday'... Nice. Making expensive campaigns that kids can skip past after the first 4 seconds no longer holds any strength; making their lives easier - and doing so seamlessly, however - is imperative. So Barclay's new app Pingit makes us very, very happy, [sort of the opposite of the little chap in this film who has a piano lesson really]. For a change, it also makes spending money on an advert okay, because it is worth talking about and anyway - it's well done, it makes us laugh.

Banks have had to up their game for a while now, there have been various initiatives that we have solidly saluted; from being able to withdraw money from cash machines when you've lost your card  [RBS and Natwest] to being able to set up overdraft alerts on text as well as personal updates [various.] Pingit, however, takes it to another level; for anyone over 16 who has an Android phone, BlackBerry or iPhone [that's pretty much the lot of 'em then], up to £300 a day can be transferred across phones... In turn, you can receive up to £5k - whoop. Its even open to people that don't bank with Barclays, which taps in to another trend we like around 'manners' [stop refusing entry to people that don't trade with you, let them in you rascals]. Whilst we're more than aware than many kids don't have £300 to just ping across to each other, it does mean that that random £4.50 you're owed [rather like the advert says] can be chased up far easier, and for a generation where every penny and pound count, this makes Barclay's pretty appealing.

Nice, nice, good work banker boy.
See the video of how Pingit works here.

Tweet-A-Flight, is aiming to monetize twitter followers, by turning airline tweets into transactions and turn the reach of twitter into real time sales channels for travel companies. A genius idea that will obviously favour the quick fingered and twitter addicts, but no doubt would be great for picking up some great flight deals.

TweetAFlight lets customers buy tickets via Twitter using Chirpify and PayPal. Once registered with both, tweeters will simply need to reply to an airline’s TweetAFlight tweet with the phrase “buy” to make a purchase. Their data is then transmitted to the airline ticket system and the payment is instantly processed. Its sounds easy enough, and the service is looking to be launched in the nearby future...
