You should.

I've never called my blog a fashion blog intentionally. There are real fashion bloggers out there, they know what they talk about and do a great job documenting the latest trends. I would never compare my blog to theirs.

I didn't have much style as a teenager and I wouldn't say I was interested in my own style before I turned 18. Leaving home to study in a bigger city was probably the trigger. All of a sudden, I lived 5 minutes from one the longest shopping streets in Europe. After only two years in Bordeaux, I had changed drastically. It took me years before finding what I wanted my style to be and feeling confident about it. It was a long and tricky process but I've learned a lot along the way and that's the reason why I felt like starting this blog and documenting my style and inspiration.

I followed Paris Fashion Week for years while I still lived in France, I would watch the shows on TV and read articles in the magazine my mom bought every Sunday. I remember Kenzo & Ungaro initiating my love for color. And then I moved to Oslo and had to start from scratch. Learning about Scandinavian designers wasn't exactly my priority but eventually I caught up. I went to Fashion Night Out in New York with Jacob and had a blast. Laetitia (aka Mademoiselle Robot) came to Oslo and took me to Fashion Week and I didn't feel like I didn't belong. Fam Irvoll's show convinced me Fashion could (and should) be fun.

However I never felt I knew enough about Fashion. See: Fashion with a big F, scary. I am very interested in style and clothes and shoes and glasses but without caring much for names and labels.

And then I found out about Fashionary.
BAM BAM BAM

The name 'Fashionary' comes from Fashion + Dictionary + Diary. And only this sounds like perfection to me. It's a sketchbook combined with quasi-exhaustive fashion information and figure templates. I'm still brainstorming about how to make most out of these templates without ruining them but I already know I want to go through the dictionary from A to Z.

Here's the list of contents:
• Measurement Tools
• Brands Index
• Books & Bookmarks
• Body Measurement
• Patterns & Flat Drawings
• Specs Sheets
• Fabric Dictionary
• Colour & Printing
• Laundry Labels
• Seams & Stiches
• Typography & Boards
  • • Fashion Events

I'll make sure to post some of the templates once I've customized them. Can't wait to get started!

Read more about Fashionary here.

A little while ago, I mentioned getting rid of the mess...

I know it didn't look messy at all to most of you but in my quest for minimalism, this part of my bedroom was driving me nuts. Ok, maybe not nuts but I sure didn't like the way my necklaces were displayed and my bookshelf was full of stuff. Stuff. Even though it was full of things I liked, it was full of things I never used simply because I had forgotten about most of them. The more you have, the less you see what you have.

I gave books away, I discarded bags of paper - brochures, pages, articles - I had been keeping ever since I moved in. I couldn't believe how much clutter I had around. I had no idea getting rid of it would make such a difference. I took everything out, reorganized all of it and I can now see what I have and make better use of it. I found out I don't want to have many books. I want books that inspire me, books that I actually read and even reread.

1. Paris versus New York • 50 exercices pour les paresseuses • This is not a book.
2. Nesting Dolls (used as jewel boxes) & Make-Up.
3. Fashionary & Juniper Girls.
4. Books, Moleskines & The Circus Club.
5. Ada's Sisters and Snow Globes.
6. Books & Nesting Dolls... again.

You may not know this but I can Sign Language. I used to speak it on a daily basis when I still lived in France and it's actually one of the few things I miss from my life back there. This video was a sweet reminder of some of projects I had regarding my favourite language and I hope you'll love this movie as much as I do. - Adeline.

"As a result of being born deaf, my perceiving process is shaped by American Sign Language interpreters, subtitles on television, written conversations on paper, emails, and text messages. These communication modes convey, filtered and limited information, which naturally leads to a loss of content and a delay in communication. Thus, my understanding of reality is filtered, and even potentially distorted. This is at the core of my practice as an artist and through this I am now able to take ownership of sound. I perform, vocalize, and/or visually translate them based on legitimacy of my perception." - Christine Sun Kim.

If there's something I love about Athena, it's her care for details. She happens to have the best taste when it comes to combining colours and her blog is a great source of inspiration where she also shared great music tips. Even though she was stuck in bed with a bad fever, she took some time to answer my questions and I'm superhappy to finally feature her here.

Meet Athena.

* Chit-chat

• First, could you tell me a little bit about yourself?
A 20+ librarian who works as a press officer and dreams to be a museum curator.
And like every other ordinary girl I’m into shoes, floral skirts in winter, my fluffy cat, my new canon, green and purple together, bicycle rides, louis garrel and guillaume canet, indie music, satchel bags and sunny afternoons.
• When and how and why did you start blogging?
My first blog post was almost three years ago.
Nothing great, no unforgettable story behind the birth of my blog. This is what happens when you read so many blogs per day and at a point you go like “hey, I can do it too” and I found it to be the perfect way to share my interests with other lovely people.
• How much time do you devote to blogging on a weekly basis?
It really depends on my creativity, if I have a nice idea for a photoshoot or some good music worth to post, then I’m going to spend a lot of time in front of my laptop, preparing my clothes or editing the photos.
• What do you like the most about blogging? What do you like the least?
All the new friends I have made through these years… ok... that’s a typical answer but so so true.
Some of my best friends at the moment used to be just another blog follower two years ago.
What I like the least? Hmm… well, I have to say all those girls who think that just by having a fashion blog, you automatically are a fashion editor.
• How would you describe your blog? How did it evolve over time?
My blog started as a fashion blog…. after three years of blogging I have grow up and obviously so has my blog.
I now can describe my blog as a diary about style, music, photos and everything I’m into at the moment.

* Fashion

• How would you describe your style?

At the moment I’m so into high waisted shorts, oversized sweaters and knee socks but at the same time you can find me wearing colourful tights and peter pan collar dresses. Everything with a retro hint on.

• Name your favorite brands, shops...

Name one girl who doesn’t love h&m, zara, primark, topshop, ameican vintage, urban outfitters or american apparel.

I do online shopping and my favourite thing is to discover new online shops everyday… ok… except from some classic ones like asos, modcloth, yesstyle and dahlia fashion.

Etsy, is also a great place to buy something unique from independent designers with great talent. Oh! And I have a thing for vintage shopping too… yes… my shop list is just too long.

• Any particular inspiration? Do you have a style icon?

I can name a lot of famous fashion icons like Zooey Deschanel or classic ones like Francoise Hardy, but my best inspiration is searching through blogs, flickr’s wardrobe remix or fashion sites like lookbook for those real girls with the absolute style.

• Do you have guiding principles when it comes to creating an outfit? Colours for instance? How do you create an outfit?

I’m trying to be open-minded and dare to try on new styles and different colour combinations.
In some occasions, I can go wrong -it can happened to everyone- but most of the time I discover new ways to wear my clothes that I’ve never thought of before.

• What's the last piece of clothing you fell for?

Aww.. It has to be this cute top from zara. Lace in nude colour and a tiny black peter pan collar. Lace is a girl’s best retro friend.

• What's the next one you'd like to get?

I’m thinking of giving a second chance to all my old clothes that I don’t wear anymore rather than buying new ones, at the moment (crisis it is). It’s like a detox from shopping.

*Life (and a good measure of curiosity)

• Other hobbies, beside fashion?

Due to fact that I hated all kind of sports since I was a child, all I was left with were arts and crafts... So, I grew up taking art lessons and then started illustration for children’s book and artistic bookbinding.

• Do you collect anything?

Postcards and flyers from all around the world... Everytime, I’m travelling abroad (or when a friend does) I come back home with a package of flyers in different colours and shapes.

• Favourite book?

It depends on the emotional period I’m in at the time. One of my favourite books for the last four months is Lisbon from Fernado Pessoa, but, I can’t be objective, the book was a gift from a special friend and Lisbon is one of my best cities to live.

• Favourite movie?

So many, I’m sure I am going to forget one… Well, I’m a big fan of French movies like “Jeux d'enfants”, “Chansons d’amour”, “Dans Paris” and more independent movies like “Dear Wendy”.
But there’s always place for a classic Disney movie like “The Aristocats”.

• Favourite music?

Guitars, synths and The Beach Boys… 40’s and 50’s music is always on my mp3 (nope, I don’t own an iPod!) and indie music from Chile and Peru is my latest obsession.

• Favourite food?

I cannot live without sushi, mushrooms, tapas, falafel, pasta and traditional greek dishes. I do EAT a lot.

• Favourite place?

My dream places to be are Chile and Europe’s amazing cities such as Lisbon (again!) and Barcelona.
Even though, my favourite place at the moment could be my bed and my super comfortable mattress – my high fever is talking for me.

Σας ευχαριστώ Αθηνά.

Dear October - I don't know what you did to me. I didn't feel like taking photos, I didn't know what to tweet about (not that I give it that much thought usually), I felt rather uninspired and I was too tired/busy to care.

November, however, you are oh so exciting. I thought you were all cold and boring and you proved me wrong. Ada celebrated her third birthday; Astrid and I relaunched Her & DerI'll be in Copenhagen in a week and then *insert smiling face* LONDON to visit Mademoiselle Robot and finally meet some of my favourite people: Hello Naomi! "I bought my first camera because I was in love. I wanted desperately to document my happiness and it became a wonderful tool for crystallising those memories. There is a lovely quote by Dorothea Lang that reads, "A camera is a tool for seeing without a camera" - and that's why I like to take pictures. It makes me more observant, it makes me more appreciative of detail and it helps me to document the little things (like my cat trying to gnaw through the plastic wrapping on a baguette) and the big things (like meeting my niece for the first time)."

A long time ago a magical doll was delivered to my desk.  I  wanted to take her all around San Francisco but the weather, in typical San Francisco fashion, didn't cooperate.  Most of her time in city was spent indoors and eating a various local restaurants.  We did manage to escape the house for a bit to see the murals in the Mission and hike up Bernal Hill.

As a special treat we drove down to Palo Alto and spent time in one of the many science labs at Stanford University.  Ada got to play around with a bunch of chemicals and the bacterias, and I'm pretty sure she is responsible for some huge scientific discovery :)  She even made friends with other dolls in between experiments!

I never knew that you could have so much fun with a traveling doll
and I am extremely grateful for the experience.

As soon as Ada arrived I had to take a "welcome!" picture right away; because finally Ada had come to Chicago!! Now I live a little outside Chicago, so for a few days Ada spent time relaxing out here in my backyard with my dog Cookie. As you can see, it's really hard to capture my dog's face. Then she spent sometime frolicking amongst flowers, climbing trees, crossing little red bridges, standing next to cars, and looking out to the distance; waiting for the day we could make it to downtown Chicago.

First we visited the Art Institute of Chicago, known for its iconic lions that guard the front entrance. She saw many cool art pieces including Grant Wood's "American Gothic." Then we headed towards Millenium Park, where the Bean is, and purple flower gardens abound. We spent sometime there people watching, and taking pictures against the skyline. We also walked over to the Roman memorial columns, just to check them out, and saw Oprah Winfrey's name inscribed on it! It was a beautiful and sunny summer day in Chicago. Of course I had to take one photo with Ada and me before she left! I guess there was too much sun that day, since it came out so bright. Anyway she soon had to leave, so I made her a little flower scarf that she used to keep warm as she looked out the window on the last rainy day. Ada loved Chicago, and I hope she comes back one day!

May 23, 11:43 AM

I had been waiting for Ada’s arrival since June 2010. I followed her travels closely and was even a bit jealous when she got to meet some of my blog friends before me.

I think it was the color that first drew me to Ada... Who wouldn’t want to be friends with a cheery red doll?

Since I live so close to America’s capital city, visiting friends are always insisting on the tour... White House, Washington Monument, Union Station, etc. We headed out early with Ada to take in the sights, but I could tell she got bored fast.

And here is the great thing about Ada - she is not one of those friends that visits and insists on being entertained. No, Ada is the friend you can simply take to your favorite coffee shop and enjoy time together.

So, with this new understanding, we left D.C. and headed to my favorite part of Virginia, Old Town Alexandria.

Living so close to a big city, people aren’t especially warm and friendly. People keep their eyes averted, concentrating on iPhones or street signs.

The day we went out with Ada, Jeremy and I had a ball. We laughed when White House security guards came over to monitor the suspicious behavior of a 6’ 2” man climbing up the gate of the White House holding a plastic doll over his head. I yelled when Jer thought it was a good idea to set Ada on a windy peer, precariously close to the water. “How will I explain that we lost Ada in the Potomac River to Adeline?!”

We were so wrapped up, that we were shocked every time someone stopped us to say...

“What a pretty doll!”

“May I ask what you are doing?”

“Is this for a special art show?”

“Would you like a photo of the three of you?”

“Ok. I came over because I just know there is a story here!”

In all seriousness, isn’t that what we all want? Someone to genuinely want to hear our story?

If there is a lesson that Miss Ada left me, it’s this - live your life so that you are wrapped up in the enjoyment of it, and you will be surprised by the people that are drawn to you.

So, thanks, Ada, for showing me that people in D.C. can be nice (hopefully those few people weren’t just tourists from Idaho). ;)

That is all.

April 04, 02:00 AM

When Melly sent me those photos, she put a huge smile upon my face. And then I thought: "Some people won't see the magic." and I started thinking of this post...

In my opinion, they are different ways to react at those photos depending on what you focus on: aesthetic, personal taste, photo technique... Melly is a skilled photographer but I, as an individual, appreciate above all her sense for details and her sense of humour, like a child smiling right after he's done something silly.

Take, for instance, this shot on the bus. Don't think about it as a photo but as a piece of an experiment: imagine Melly or even better yourself taking Ada out of your bag, switching your camera on... You may feel a bit silly or a bit embarrassed, there may be people looking at you, wondering what the heck you're doing. Or it may go completely unnoticed. Anyhow, I can guarantee that you'll have a rush of adrenaline and I can guarantee you'll have a crush on Ada - even though she's made of plastic. And I do hope you'll be proud about being part of this collective experiment.

When I tell people about this project, it's always interesting to see their reactions: some smile and tell me how much they love this idea and I'm delighted by their enthusiasm; some don't really see the point and look at it as a waste of time. I don't blame them, we're all different and I don't expect everyone to like every single of my projects. But I feel a bit sad - dare I say sorry? - for them because obviously they don't understand the magic in a globetrotting doll or in trusting people you've actually never met. How often do you trust strangers these days? The Beatles said "all you need is love". Well, I need my daily dose of magic.

Thank you for making the magic happen.

I'm so happy Ada finally made it to California and met Gus! I took her to a couple areas she insisted on visiting. Hope you like the set.

Ada went to San Francisco where she had tapas and went shopping.

She had a burrito in Hollywood and insisted on having her picture taken next to Marilyn Monroe's footprints at Graumans Chinese Theater.

She got to see Banksy art in person!!!

A few months ago, Laura won the give-away including one of Ada's sisters: Baby Blue. Laura was sweet enough to let us know how Baby Blue has been since she arrived in Nottingham. I can't wait for Ada to visit Laura and Baby Blue!

Since Baby Blue arrived in Nottingham last year she's settled in well and made a new friend called Frank (shown above, her visit to Frank's new house!) And this weekend Baby Blue took a tourist trip around Nottingham.

First stop: Nottingham Castle!

She even managed to meet Robin Hood himself!

A lovely view of the castle on the hill..

A much needed rest.. and a chance to admire the view!

Before stopping into England's oldest pub for a pint of real ale..

All in all, a lovely day was had by all!

It was close to exams crazyness and the first day of "snow" according to the other exchange students, meaning that the air was full of slushy, wet snow flakes.

We came directly from the studio, got drunk on one beer and say these guys being dead serious about tambourine and some fantastic pop music.

And when they packed up their stuff, we left as well.

Things I will remember: the sound of the tram arriving / weekend breakfasts in Egg & Milk / dancing my ass off in indie clubs / all the handsome men / concerts in small clubs and in Liseberg / our fabulous apartment / my new Swedish friends / Wednesday in the climbing gym / the super cute seals and penguins in Slottsskogen / after work on Fridays

Things I will forget:  the relaxed vibe of Majorna / that Systembolaget closes two o'clock at Saturdays / my running route in Slottsskogen / the price on (Norwegian) salmon / all the shortcuts from district to district / where all the nice secondhand shops are
November 14, 04:30 PM
So, here we go again. Just a quick note to explain, I moved to Göteborg in August for a year abroad as a part of my degree. For several reasons, I ended up here, in the second largest city in Sweden, which is actually closer to Adeline (err... Oslo) than Trondheim was. It is still another country. The food is different, the tram is on time and it feels in many ways a lot further away than Trondheim did. And my Mum misses me way more now. Okay, over to the first challenge.
-Astrid.

They all speak Swedish, which is quite easy to understand as a concept, but not in the details. They laugh of me when I use "rar" in the wrong way (it means weird in Norwegian but cute in Swedish) and because I always sound so happy. Just as we Norwegians always sound like we're asking questions in English, we sound superhappy all the time for the other Scandinavians. Swedish has as many dialects as Norwegian, but I can only hear a few of them: the Skåne dialect, which is more like Danish, the Bohuslän dialect, which reminds me of the Western Norwegian dialects, and Stockholm, which is just cocky. We adapt to each other, they start to speak with Norwegian accents and I blend in more and more Swedish words.

I have started to dream in Swedish.

This is how I sound to the Swedes.

This is not the first time we give up on Her & Der. Once again, we got busy with studies and work and all of a sudden it was summer. Astrid moved to Göteborg to study, Adeline got the job she had been dreaming of and time went by.

We both have those travel cards and Astrid suggested we could use them to challenge each other: pick one card or two, let the other illustrate with photos & words.
So here we are, two cards on my desk. Ready Astrid? Go!

Astrid: The Glorious Line. April 19, I'm standing in front singing along to this in Terminal 5 in New York. To say I'm excited would be the understatement of the year.

Adeline: When Astrid picked this week's theme, she probably didn't know that I don't listen to PJ Harvey. Don't misunderstand me: I like her music but somehow I never fell for it.

Next week's theme will be 'wait & see' chosen by Adeline.

March 07, 03:19 PM

Astrid: This will surprise no one: that my favourite habit is making coffee in the morning. I find breakfast the meal that could be either the best or the worst - it depends so much on the time left for it.

Adeline: I couldn't help smiling when I saw Astrid's pick as it's also my favourite habit. I guess we're friends for a reason (several actually). I actually always wait a couple of hours before having my first coffee. I like having the flat all by myself in the morning. I like having breakfast in my jammies and checking my emails, then getting ready for the day. Working part-time has really had a positive impact on that specific part of the day: I no longer have to hurry up and can wake up at my own pace.

Next week's theme will be a song by PJ Harvey, set by Astrid.

February 27, 12:38 PM

Adeline: Looks like my flatmate solved one of the society's biggest problems: 'What to wear today.'
Astrid: Det lukte bensin av den vakre kjolen min.
Kaizers Orchestra again.

Next week's theme will be "my favourite routine/habit" - chosen by Adeline.
February 26, 10:01 AM

Astrid: Sorry about the delay. I got the flu. So I'm lying in bed, waiting to get better.
Adeline: Hi Spring, hurry up, will you?

Next week's theme will be blue, set by Astrid.
February 13, 11:51 AM

Astrid: Minus degrees calls for hearty meals, so I turn to the East European cuisine. Today: Bortsch!

You need: 2 yellow onions, 4 cloves of garlic, some olive oil, 4 beetroots, some cabbage, 2 carrots, 2 tbs vinegar, 1 tbs sugar, 1,5 litres of water, 2 dices of broth (preferably ox), 100 g bacon, salt, pepper.

You do this: Clean and cut onion and garlic. Slice the bacon and fry in a big pot with the olive oil. Add the onion and garlic and fry this as well. Add some water and leave this to boil when making the other ingredients ready. Peel the beetroots, and slice them into very small pieces. Do the same to the carrots, and slice the cabbage as well. Add all this to the pot, add water and the broth. Let the soup boil until the vegetables are ready, about 15 minutes. Add vinegar, sugar, salt and pepper to taste.

You eat: with a spoonful of creme fraiche or sour cream in the bowl, with some nice bread and vodka on the side. Yummy!

Adeline: Mix rum, lime and a spoon of sugar, serve with ginger ale. Dance, sing, laugh and take polaroids. However, be aware it might have some side effects the following day: your flat looks like a battlefield and all you want to do is sleep. Happy Sunday!

Next week: Patience, suggested by Nardiville.

February 07, 01:56 AM

Adeline: "Make me a bird so I can fly far, far far away from here."

Astrid: We did some weird things in India. One day we went bird spotting in a bird reservoir. Sitting in a cycle rickshaw, we went around in the reservoir looking at the birds. (There was also a tiger in the reservoir, but we didn't see him.) Luckily, we spotted the Kingfisher, India's national bird. Isn't he cute? (and click for a better resolution..)

Next week's theme will be a recipe, set by Astrid.

February 06, 03:26 PM

Adeline: While Astrid was in India, I spent three weeks home in France, then came back in Oslo and spent pretty much all of January drinking coffee with friends, going to museums, leaving speech bubbles on trees or thinking about what I want this year to be like. It feels like 2011 is a blank canvas which is both exciting and a bit scary.

Astrid: Since last time, I've spent three weeks in India. Let me just say: it's been a magic holiday. So many people, so many smells, so many things to see, so many noises, so much nice food and so on. India is perhaps the anti-thesis to Trondheim, which these days is quiet, cold and relaxing.

It's good to be back and thanks for the patience!

Next week's theme will be bird, chosen by Adeline.

Hi! We'll back in February!
Till then, take care
Adeline & Astrid

February 06, 03:29 PM

A moment in time: 2pm Christmas Day.

Adeline: Christmas Day with my family: seventeen people around the table & almost six hours to eat the entire meal. Spoiled as a 7-year-old and happy as a bee.

Astrid: Christmas Day - the day after the big day here in Norway. Christmas Eve is the time for family dinner, huge amounts of Christmas cakes and opening the presents, and Christmas Day is the time for playing with your gifts, drinking tea and cuddling the dog.

February 06, 03:30 PM

Adeline: Friends coming over - the place is a fucking mess - 30 minutes to make it look better. I'll kill my flatmate later.

Astrid: My suitcase... before Stockholm: a bare minimum of clothes / after four days in Stockholm: stuffed with Christmas presents and my New Year's Eve dress.

Next week's theme will be "a moment in time" - chosen by Cesar.

February 06, 03:31 PM

Adeline: I don't really wish anything for Christmas, besides being home in France and be able to do NOTHING. I do have a few things on my wishlist for 2011 though: visit the last places I haven't seen in Oslo yet, coffee date with my favourite girl (I'm looking at you, Astrid), a tattoo appointment with Sam and a lot of concerts.

Astrid: Over the years, I want less things and more experiences. This year: A snowclad and peaceful Oslo, and seeing Adeline again.

Next week's theme will be before/after, chosen by Adeline.

December 05, 01:30 PM

Adeline: Listening to On My Shoulders by The Do.

Astrid: I'm already preparing for New Year's! Dress, check, shoes, check, party, check, person to kiss, check.

Next week's theme will be my wishlist, chosen by Astrid.
