Bringing Social Back to one point YOU. Photo: unknown.

TWITTER and How To Be FOUND.

NOTE TO NEW READERS ~ We advise executives in the industry to read the bottom post ‘first’ and work your way up, as our advice builds gradually upon the last ~

Let’s talk about TWITTER:

That is your Billboard To The World - as well.

YEP.

Make your Twitter profile the same as your LinkedIn Billboard.
(see previous post).

GASP.

Stop thinking …. “no one does that - Twitter profiles are about being funny and kitsch?”

NEXT.

Add a LINK on your Twitter profile back to your AMAZING LinkedIn profile (resume to the world).

YOU’ll BE AMAZED, at the leads that come your way.

HOW TO FIND REAL PEOPLE (inside) the companies you LOVE on Twitter:

DIRECTIONS:
*Following Companies is ‘great’ on Twitter but following real executives is even BETTER. Most Ad Agencies lack the foresight to follow their fans (back) - another topic for discussion.

How do you find REAL people at your favorite Ad Agencies to follow on Twitter?

EASY.

Search your favorite Employer’s company profile on LinkedIn. [stay with me]
Instead of SEARCH PEOPLE, drop down and Search Companies - Click on the Company Profile Page on LinkedIn…..scroll down and you WILL SEE current employees that work at your favorite Agency/Company.

SCROLL through all those (amazing) profiles and FIND who has TWITTER link’s on LI “double” click on their Twitter links and make sure you’re following them. LinkedIn sometimes say’s you are already connected but IF you double click you’ll see you’re actually NOT.

[dislike *note to LI developers]

P.S. There’s an added BONUS: Every single person who’s profile you OPEN - MIGHT just check you out back on LI, because folks are always curious as to WHO’s looking at their profiles. If your linkedIn billboard is perfect and clearly states (what we talked about)…How POWERFUL are you? VERY.

Haven’t you just placed your resume on their COMPUTER SCREEN? They ARE looking at your LinkedIn profile (right)?

WOW.

Isn’t that AWESOME?

Your BILLBOARD to the WORLD

How to ‘BE FOUND’ by a hiring director, company or a recruiter looking to hire.

I’d be hard pressed to say that any other description about yourself and your career is ‘as’ important as what I’m about to tell you.

The tagline under your name on LinkedIn.

YEP.

It seems so inconsequential, really - but listen to my advice from a ‘hiring manager and recruitment’ perspective and make your own conclusions:

LETS PLAY.

I’m a 3 x Cannes LION winning ECD in NYC looking to hire a Digital Copy CD in town. I go to my LI contacts and do a status update about it ‘check’. This supports my previous post about sending invites not lame PDF’s.

I’m an ECD who’s looking for ‘the best’. I also have the Agency Recruiters on it. So I do a people search on LI during a mundane meeting to see ‘who’s out there’ just for kicks.

I search ACD, COPY, NYC in key words and below is what [we Employers/Recruiters] see, the only thing I, the ECD see’s…. are your tag-lines below:

Jane Lane
Freelancer

Frank Loyd
available copywriter

Sue Quint
Copy/ACD at (company name)

Sal Smart
Copy/ACD DIGITAL W+K | Sid Lee | Ogilvy | NIKE | Puma | Absolute Vodka | DIESEL Inquires Welcome: freelance/full

Joe Dense
Creative looking for his next gig

Who’s profile am I going to OPEN and read? Seriously. Which one will I choose to investigate further?

The TAGLINE under name will make or break your ‘BEING FOUND’.

P.S. Once we open your profile please make it *easy to pick up phone and call you, or email you. Don’t GIVE us an enormous complicated wordy SUMMARY. WARM words about what your looking for and easily FOUND contact info (in your summary) is always very to the point and effective. We can read about your experience under your jobs - no need to recap how wonderful you are in the summary, if you’ve detailed your experience. A long summary - distracts and be-fuddles.

ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT EXAMPLES of TAG-LINES:

Jane Lane
Managing Director

Frank Loyd
Advertising Account Director seeking opportunity

Sue Quint
Account Director at Parsons & Company

Sid Smart
Advertising Branding Director w/ Global Digital Brand expertise
KRAFT | JAGUAR | COKE | P&G| ROYAL CARIBBEAN

Again: If I’m a CEO looking for a top Account Director …..who’s profile am I going to WANT to open above? *The one that impresses me the most.

See why I call it YOUR BILLBOARD TO THE WORLD?

The Best CV in the world, connects you to people.

“Social media has COMPLETELY changed - things. As a Recruiter - why store a pdf resume when it doesn’t update itself, when it isn’t globally searchable, when it doesn’t connect me to you in real time? Isn’t that what LinkedIn profiles are for? YES. “The NEW CV is not a [yesterday pdf].”

A pdf is a dead attachment - I can print out. Why would I need to do that? Make your LI profile your resume. If someone needs a pdf (yawn) make one, as a replica of the great info on your LI profile.

Pdf’s are for filing cabinets and inaccurate (out of date & ‘quite’ inaccurate) databases. Do pdf’s update the recipient holder when you’ve accepted a new job, when you’ve changed your contact info? Do pdf’s keep you top of mind with the holder, by sending updates every now and again?

No, pdf resumes do absolutely none of those things.

Connect don’t just apply.

Send Invitations not PDF’s.

*BE FOUND.*

The thing is gifted, intelligent job seekers; you don’t need a recruiter to chance connect you to companies you’d like work for anymore. That’s an outdated hapless way to think. If you know companies you’d like to work for as any job seeker should (ladies and gentleman) we have what’s called Social Media - third party recruiters headhunt (highly specialized executives) for discerning clients. We can keep an eye out for you, but that is not enough: if your unemployed. CONNECT. FRIEND. FOLLOW. FAN.

BEST networking TIPS for a JOB: make friendships.

#1 FILL IN SOCIAL MEDIA PROFILES (they are your RESUME). ATTACHMENTS are YESTERDAY.

Why are ‘attached resume pdf’s’ yesterday? Do emailed pdf resumes keep me connected to you? No. Do emailed pdf’s update themselves? No. Do emailed pdf resumes keep you top of mind by cool status updates? No. Can emailed pdf’s be ‘exaggerated’ as they are not visible to former co-workers? Yes. Do emailed pdf resume attachments put you in my ‘go to’ contacts? No. If you need more reasons, I have more.

BUILD frienships in the industry verses demanding they look at your emailed PDF & cover letter. SEND INVITES not RESUMES.

BE FOUND.

* What we tell folks - is this: BE TRULY INTERESTED in OTHERS. BE TRULY INTERESTED IN forming a Social Media Friendship with ‘potential employers’. BEING about OTHERS you admire - is the way to OPEN DOORS.

* SHOWING the company and ‘hiring manager’ at company you are about THEM. (works wonders for networking in Social & getting interviews).

*What do MOST job seekers do? They send ‘emails’ with pdf ‘attachments’ yawn.

*When you create personalized cover letters and resumes and never hear back- it can make you consider if it’s worth it? PERHAPS IT IS NOT. example

Dear Ms. Cordes:

Allow me to Introduce MYSELF, I did this, and I and I and I and I assume I’m so amazing that even though I am a stranger I’m sure my ‘detailed life story’ is fascinating and I’m asking you to LOOK at MY resume….. {does NOT land Interviews}

THINK:

What Ad Recruiter advises - is this: BE TRULY INTERESTED in OTHERS. BE TRULY INTERESTED IN forming a Social Media Friendship with ‘potential employer’. BEING about OTHERS you admire - is the way to OPEN DOORS.

* So FOR EXAMPLE: (opposed to lame email cover letter and lame pdf attachment)

Hi Christie,

(I’m not going to ask you (a perfect stranger) for your time and talk about myself, I’m going to write an EFFECTIVE INVITE)

I came across your LI profile, and was extremely impressed by your background! I find it so interesting you represented fine artists before you went into Advertising? How cool are you? I’d LOVE to be LI friends - may I send an invite to you? I’m in the advertising buisness and am currently networking for a new opportunity - I’d LOVE to have you in my network and be friends.

It would make my day!

Kindest Regards,
Mr. Smart Job Seeker

WHY:

*I’m now VERY INCLINED to read this executive’s background on LI verses deleting his lame PDF, DEMANDING my time.

* People LOVE hearing in a ‘genuine’ matter how cool they are (themselves). This sets the tone (if truly genuine) that THEY almost can’t HELP but like you.

Many job seekers ‘miss’ this step. In the age of MASS reach this means MASS people WANT an employer’s time. GIVE them something FIRST, a nice ‘experience’ in meeting you.

And REMEMBER:

“Dis-ingenuous ‘networking’ isn’t networking. Networking is about the amazingness in others not yourself.” Christie Cordes
