Working with Junk-It to Recycle Waste Wood Flooring

    Junk-It junk removal

We are committed to a clean and green environmental policy here at McKay Flooring and we try to recycle suitable materials at every opportunity. That is why we were delighted to partner with the innovative Junk-It junk removal company in Scotland.

Junk-It are experts at junk removal and house clearances in Glasgow and Edinburgh and take pride in recycling as much material as they can.

Our arrangement means Junk-It will come to our wood flooring showroom in Glasgow to uplift all waste wood and wood flooring and put it to good use.

The company was founded four years ago when Ross Martin decided to make the move from being an estate agent. He spotted a need for house clearances and junk removal and Junk-It was born. His business partner David Malcolm, meanwhile, used to run one of the most successful junk removal businesses in America.

Junk-It have become a friendly and welcome  site in Glasgow with their distinctive yellow and black livery. We are glad they are busy and we are glad to put business their way.

Colin and Justin Are Floored By Our Glasgow Showroom

    Colin and Justin

Colin and Justin, well-known interior designers and TV celebrity duo, visited our showroom recently in search of inspiration and some original flooring ideas.

Happily they liked what they saw and sent out a warm and unsolicited endorsement firstly on Twitter:

Just found BRILLIANT flooring company (www.mckayflooring.co.uk) with a wonderful product range. Poss’ one of Scotlands best. Check them out!

    and again:

Had www.mckayflooring.co.uk round to measure some of our rooms. A no attitude team who know exactly what’s what! Flooring problems solved!

Then Colin and Justin followed it this weekend with generous praise for McKay Flooring in the Sunday Mail. This is what they had to say in one of Scotland’s most popular papers:

When it comes to installing new timber floor, it’s worth talking to a specialist. McKay Flooring in Glasgow and Livingston specialises in hardwood, engineered wood and laminate floors.

They’ve supplied floors for Malmaison hotels and The Gallery of Modern Art. Call 0845 602 7694 or visit www.mckayflooring.co.uk

Thank you Colin and Justin. We were really glad to be of service.

    Opepe Flooring before & after

Opepe is a hard timber which generally comes from the African continent. It was used in the 1940’s to the 1960’s in the UK for hardwood flooring in domestic and commercial situations, but now has become very rare for this use due to availability and cost. The colour of Opepe tends to be a ochre to warm orange and with it’s fine straight grain it makes a beautiful hardwood floor.

As you can see he has done a fantastic job of installing, sanding & sealing the boards.  A lot of work goes into reclaimed flooring, but as you can see from the images it’s well worth it.

The Junckers Sports Flooring that we have in stock is in very good condition and is only £12/m2

Is Reclaimed Flooring Right For Me?

Reclaimed flooring is known and famed for being an affordable alternative to new hardwood flooring. But laminate and engineered flooring is equally affordable. Thus, for those on a budget it can often be difficult to decide what type of flooring is right for them.

Basically reclaimed wood flooring is perfect for people who would love to have new wood flooring but can’t afford it, or who want to be ecologically responsible.

If you have kids (note the plural) and want real wood flooring you have probably already considered the potential for damage; with new hardwood flooring being expensive to repair/replace. So, reclaimed flooring could be a solution there, because if it gets damaged then it will not be such a big pain in the wallet.

That said; laminate flooring is actually the best option in households where kids are going to be growing up. Laminate flooring is basically a laminated picture of a wood floor plank, covered by high-tensile plastic, which makes it pretty much kid-proof.

Also, if you live in an area prone to rapid and frequent temperature changes, then engineered flooring is the better option, because it copes better with the expansion and contraction caused by such circumstances.

Apart from that reclaimed flooring is definitely perfect for those who want a real wooden floor on a budget. Buying reclaimed flooboards from Mckay Flooring is buying wood floors which still have a lifetime in them if properly cared for. The great thing is that you get to choose whether you want the natural sanded and sealed look, or a choice of a wide range of finishes.

Mckay Flooring has almost sold out of its most recent lots of reclaimed flooring, here is what they have left:

    Reclaimed Junkers Beech :-
Reclaimed high grade Junkers Beech, absolutely gorgeous.
Reclaimed Opepe :- £14 per sqm
Reclaimed Opepe comes covered in a thick lacquer, which it adorned for the length of its previous life. The lacquer has protected the floor excellently so it is in nearly new condition. –> Find Out More>>>

The Benefits of Reclaimed Flooring and Reclaimed Floor Species

As much as it pains me to admit it (not, unfortunately) I can’t help but continue to be excited about the range of benefits reclaimed flooring has. And further; the benefits that each brand and species (sold by Mckay Flooring) has in its own right.

Firstly the benefits reclaimed flooring shares with new wood flooring:

Namely the health and hygiene that comes from the removal of carpets and all the wonderful little dust-mites that live in them.

Secondly the beauty of a shiny, real wood floor.

And finally the value for money of a floor for life (if properly cared for).

Then the benefits that reclaimed flooring has over its new counterparts. Namely: the environmental aspect; the knowledge that every reclaimed floor bought is a floor that would have come from newly chopped down trees. And the knowledge that had it not been bought it would have ended up in landfill, an environmental issue in its own right, reduce, reuse recycle is our motto here at Mckay Flooring.

Then, the benefits of the individual brands: Take reclaimed Opepe for a start:

Now, a benefit for us here is that we are one of the few flooring companies that sell it. Benefits for the buyers come from the fact that this particular species of wood flooring was originally laid with thick wax and lacquer finishing. This covering has afforded the floor with an incredible level of protection from everything that walked, crawled or was pulled across it. This means that it has never been sanded.

So now, when we lay the reclaimed floorboards in their new home and sand off the wax and lacquer. What we are left with is the original flooring product, in nearly new condition and with (almost*) the same length of life as it had when it was originally purchased. Then of course you have the value factor because it costs just £14 per square meter.

Reclaimed Junkers Beech Flooring also has unique benefits:

Firstly, new Beech flooring is among the most expensive, so to get it for £12 per square meter with sports lines, or £15 per square meter without sports lines is a real bargain and phenomenal value for money. Secondly Beech is one of the most beautiful species of wood, and when sanded buyers have the choice of which finish they want to complement its natural beauty. The lighter shade of the natural wood also makes the choice of finished more varied.

Reclaimed Opepe – Before and After Shots

Well, as if there was any doubt that reclaimed Opepe floorboards would be exactly beautiful once restored to their former glory, we can now dispel that doubt with some before and after shots.

For those coming to this blog for the first time, reclaimed Opepe is one of our favourite types of reclaimed floorboards, because it is among the lowest in price, and – because of the thick lacquer used in its past life – is in among the best condition we have ever seen.

The trouble we had in the past was that we were forced to expect that people would take our word for it that it would be beautiful when fully restored. Well… no more, below you will find an image showing the board in the state we reclaimed it, and re-sanded and finished below that.

As you can see, sanded and restored reclaimed Opepe flooring is among the most beautiful of all floors. As I said, because of the thick lacquer used in its previous life the floor is in nearly new condition, yet costs just £14 per square meter. Buy reclaimed Opepe flooring now>>>

Why is Reclaimed Wood Flooring so Popular Right Now?

I know that I have posted before about reclaimed wood flooring being really popular at the moment because of the environmental kick. But is that the only reason? I think not…

Reclaimed wood flooring has a whole host of benefits, admittedly most of them are met by all kinds of wood flooring but reclaimed flooring is a lot less expensive, and therefore better value for money than the other kinds, and environmentally friendly, so it is more than likely a combination of the benefits that is behind the reclaimed craze.

As well as the major kick on being or becoming environmentally friendly, there is also a major kick on asthma prevention at the moment. People are asking, why, when medicines and hygiene are getting better, is asthma becoming more prolific? The answer many people come up with is dust mites and particles that live in our carpets.

Okay, this has mainly driven the craze on laminate flooring, but met with the environmental craze, people are choosing reclaimed hardwood floors because when properly laid they offer much better heat retention capabilities than most laminate brands. Met with the value for money benefit reclaimed wood floors will last a lifetime, whilst laminate, well, it probably won’t. Not to mention the fact that laminate flooring is an inexpensive product, whilst reclaimed wood flooring is an expensive product at an inexpensive price.

Right now, you can buy 57mm reclaimed maple flooring at just £15.00 per sqaure meter. Brand new maple flooring costs from £35 - £103.00 per square meter, and understandably given its beauty (see right). So you  can see that it is a combination of environmental awareness and the hunt for value that is driving the current craze on reclaimed wood flooring.

Reclaimed Flooring Makes Real Wood Flooring an Option for All of Us

I just read a post on an American wood flooring company’s blog that explained why reclaimed flooring isn’t the cheapest, because of all the work that goes into reclaiming the wood and making it saleable.

Now, I don’t know whether or not they are referring to woods reclaimed from other uses, but our wood flooring is certainly the cheapest of the flooring that we sell.

When our fitters go to lay a new hardwood floor, in many cases they are tasked to lift the old floor, which may have many years of life left in it if treated properly. The best of the floors that we lift are brought back to the warehouse in bundles, in the state which they have been lifted. This is often not very pretty, but it is not meant to be pretty at this stage.

The reclaimed floors we most often have on sale are:

    • Reclaimed Maple (57mm and 83mm wide planks, 83mm currently out of stock)
    • Reclaimed Beech Junker’s sports floors (with sports lines and without)
    • And Reclaimed Opepe

As you can imagine, when they are brought back to the warehouse they look used and, to be quite honest abused, but they are an affordable option for many who would otherwise be unable to consider the benefits of real wood flooring.

The reclaimed beech Junkers with sports lines is the cheapest at just £12.00 per square meter. Let’s be honest, sports lines aren’t the kinds of things we want running across our living room.

But this is not a problem, when people buy a reclaimed floor from us and hire us to lay it, the floor is properly laid, before then being re-sanded, and refinished to look like new. This process takes away all traces of the sports lines, leaving the buyer with a beautiful real beech wood floor at a fraction of the price it would have cost new, and a floor for life if properly looked after.

Reclaimed Junkers beech before and after finishing

Reclaimed Opepe is the next most expensive at £14.00 per square meter. This is a much darker and tougher wood, but again once laid and properly finished it comes up good as new, and will last a lifetime if properly cared for.

Both the reclaimed maple and the reclaimed Junkers beech without sports line cost the same, £15.33 per square meter. Maple wood is among the most expensive at up to £103 per square meter, so this is a particularly special bargain. The only difference the lack of sports lines makes, is that the wood without the sports lines will have a longer life post-finishing, because it needs less sanding.

Buy Reclaimed Flooring – Buy a Piece of History

As many of you will know, Reclaimed Floorboards is a blog run by the staff of Mckay Flooring, the UK’s largest independent wood flooring company.

Mckay Flooring’s commercial contracting division has worked in some of the most impressive buildings that Scottish heritage has to offer including: Edinburgh Castle, Culzean Castle, the University of Glasgow (est 1451), His Majesty’s Theatre, Aberdeen, the Kelvingrove Art Gallery, Hampden, Ibrox, Park Head and many more including large corporations who have taken over victorian buildings – for a full list click here.

In many of these prestigious buildings we have repaired the gorgeous historic floors, like the 18th century teak we restored in the Kelvingrove Art Gallery. But in many more we have come away with bundles of reclaimed floorboards, which will have been walked on by some of Scotland’s most important people, and seen some of Scotland’s most important events – a true piece of history.

So, not only is reclaimed flooring an excellent choice for those wanting to reduce their carbon footprint and excellent value for money, it is also bringing a piece of history into your home, as well as getting a beautiful floor covering far better than carpets (read this post to find out why) at a fraction of the price it would normally cost.

Take our reclaimed maple flooring, now it is available in 57mm wide and 83mm wide planks, both of which are priced at £15.33 per square meter. Maple flooring tends to have come from prestigious buildings because maple is among the most expensive wood flooring species, up to £103 per square meter new.

The history aspect sounds worrying when it comes to wood flooring, thinking about the state it must be in after all those years, and, you’re right. I have just come out of the warehouse, and it never ceases to amaze me why people would not look after such beautiful floors.

That said: the fitters only keep wood flooring that still has a lifetime of use with proper care. In fact, it is the people’s failure to look after it properly that leads to it being such a good purchase; a floors life is only determined by the depth of the finish, and so, the fewer times it is re-sanded, the longer it will last.

In flooring, beauty is more than skin deep; once our fitters have laid the reclaimed floor, re-sanded it and refinished it to the customer’s preference it is as beautiful as the first day it was laid – reclaimed flooring becomes restored flooring. Buy your reclaimed floor today>>>.

Reclaimed Floorboards are All the Rage Right Now

Reclaimed floorboards are currently all the rage in the wood flooring world. Now, you all probably think that we are just biased, and, well, you're right; but that doesn't change the fact that the world is becoming more and more eco-friendly and reclaimed floorboards allow you to get a beautiful floor and do your bit for the environment at the same time.

Not to mention the financial aspect. At Mckay Flooring we currently have reclaimed flooring in Beech, Teak, Maple, and many more species, and brands including Clyde and Junkers from as little as £10 per square metre. Anyone who knows floors knows that is a bargain, with new hardwood flooring costing from 3 times that, and engineered hardwood flooring costing about twice that per square meter.

When you see reclaimed floorboards in a warehouse for sale, their appearance ranges from not very nice to nothing special, but once they have been laid, sanded and refinished they are as beautiful and fantastic as if they had been brand new.

Reclaimed Junkers Beech, thanks to Mr Geraghty for the images.

Above is an image of reclaimed Junkers Beech flooring, which as you can see is absolutely gorgeous once sanded down and refinished. You can buy reclaimed Junkers Beech flooring just like it from as little as £12 per square meter with sports lines, which come off during sanding, or without sports lines from £15 per square meter.

The amount of reclaimed flooring that is available is surprising, in our world a hardwood floor is a thing of such beauty that we cannot understand why everyone would not cherish it like a part of their own family.

For any interested potential customers intrigued by the £10 per square meter reclaimed floorboards, that is a type of flooring called Opepe, offering rich dark tones perfect for a modern room. Find out more by clicking here.

Storm Harvest - Naturally windblown trees

McKay Flooring Ltd are proud to announce their exclusive rights to Storm Harvest flooring . A new ‘footprint free’ range of Scottish hardwood flooring products.

All of the timber is locally sourced from trees that are wind blown, partially diseased or removed as part of a thinning or clearing process by local authorities when bringing woodland under management.

In other words, trees that would have been chipped or burnt but which are now diverted from landfill by our partner company. In their own words, "We collate and grade the timber, mill it, then convert it into high quality hardwood boards for end-user products – all within a five-mile radius of Glasgow.

We never import, meaning we minimise travel miles and in doing so, we significantly reduce the carbon footprint of all of our products. We also support Glasgow local authority woodland units ‘three to one’ policy whereby three new trees are planted for every one tree removed, helping ensure that this valuable natural resource continues to thrive and flourish for future generations. "

But the benefits don’t stop there. Because all the hardwood in our ‘footprint free’ range originates from native Scottish timbers – a species that’s highly prized for its unique, slow growing nature – it has a strength and character that is second to none, making it ideal for a wide range of domestic and commercial

Floor Sanding & Finishing: 3 Reasons You Should Hire Professionals

It is a common misconception that hiring professional floor sanders is so expensive that we are better to have a go at it ourselves. This couldn't be further from the truth. Here are just 3 of the top reasons why hiring professional floor sanders is the best way to go:

Floor Sanding, Finishing and Sealing: A Step by Step Guide

It is a fact that hardwood flooring will last a lifetime if properly maintained. In our last post we covered how to protect floors from damage, and how to keep floors looking beautiful with regular light cleaning, and occasional deep cleaning when necessary.

But what if its too late for that? What if the floor is damaged or simply loses its shine? Well, my first answer there is to get in the professionals. The price they charge is well worth the peace of mind you get from knowing that they will make a perfect job and bring your floor up good as new. Not to mention removing the risk of you damaging the floor in a catastrophic mistake/accident.

Thus, below we will cover how a floor can be sanded and refinished to make it look as good as new. Call it a DIY guide if you like, but more importantly it will give you the knowledge necessary to make an educated judgement about quotations, and whether or not it is worth attempting yourself.

    Step 1: Sanding

This is the bit that you should really have the professionals in for. Floor sanding is not difficult, but you only want to have one go; every time a floor is sanded is 1 sanding off the length of its life, and maybe more if you lean too heavily. That is why you should get the professionals in, to ensure that it is done properly in one go, to prolong the life of the floor. Not to mention removing the potential of accidental grooves in the floor.

If you do want to do it yourself: the best advice is to hire an orbital sander.

You will also need to get the four different grades of sandpaper, 36, 60, 80, 100, and a dust-mask.

Most importantly: make sure you keep moving whilst the sander is on; long, steady strokes along the grain of the wood. If you leave the sander stationary while switched on it will leave an irreprable recess in the wood. Also, never sand across the grain! If you accidentally make a small gouge in the wood, simply make long strokes back and forth over the affected area to even it out.

Start with the roughest sandpaper, 36. Then using the slightly lighter-grained sandpaper (60 grit), sand scratches and lines in the floor as many times as necessary to remove them. Then attach the next grade, and the next, to sand the floor to a beautiful smooth finish.

If your sander doesn’t reach the edges of the floor you will need to use an edging sander, or a hand sander to sand down the edges of the floor in the same way as covered above.

You should then brush up the saw-dust, and then use a hand vacuum to pick up the even finer dust.

This is another advantage of hiring Glasgow floor sanders Mckay Flooring, we have expensive dust-free sanding machinery, which removes any possibility of a grain of dust ruining the finish.

    Step 2: Staining

By now, you are looking at a smooth, sanded hardwood floor, as bare and beautiful as nature never intended. You have to choose whether you want to keep its natural beauty or give its beauty a different shade, texture and/or tone.

This is a decision you will already have made when buying wood-staining products, but no one says you can’t change your mind when presented with the natural beauty of the wood.

If you have decided not to stain you can move on to step 3. Otherwise, the next step is to test your shade on a corner of the floor and leave it 5 minutes to dry, to make sure you like it on.

If you do: the next step is to apply a first coat of stain to the rest of the floor. Use a brush and smooth out with a rag if you want heavier, darker coats. Use only rags for lighter and more controlled strokes. Either way, apply with long, even strokes, going with the grain. Allow the first coat to dry. If necessary, apply a second coat, or touch up light spots.

You can just imagine how devastating it would be if you made a mess of this job, so please be careful. Of course it can be sanded again, but this is again shortening the life of the floor.

    Step 3: Finishing (AKA Sealing)

Firstly, ensure that you do the opposite of how Bond likes his martinis; stir the polyurethane finishing solution, do not shake. Shaking would create air bubbles which would ruin the finish on your floor.

Apply polyurethane with a brush or roller, using smooth, even strokes with the grain to avoid marks in the finish. Then leave to dry for at least 3 hours, before applying the second coat – check the label for drying times of the brand you have bought.

Add a second coat. Allow the final coat to dry overnight at least, and leave it up to 3 days before moving furniture or rugs back on the floor.

When Does My Wood Floor Need Sanding

This is a very difficult question to answer, because there is no set duration in which you should have your floor sanded. A floor’s life is determined by how many times it is sanded; when it has been sanded down till the point where one more sanding will expose take it past the grooves of the locking mechanism which holds the floor together, a new floor is needed. Therefore minimising the amount of times your floor is sanded is the best policy to prolong the life of a floor.

Floor Sanding: Why Can’t I Sand my own Floors?

In my time working in the flooring and floor sanding industry, I have come across many people who say: oh, it’s okay, I’ll hire a floor sanding machine and do it myself, and some who say: why can’t I sand my own floors?

The answer is simple: a potential DIY floor sander has one floor and one chance to sand it. There are no practice runs.

The average hardwood floor costs £500 - £700, no one wants to risk putting a deep groove and ruining a floor, thus it is far better to hire professional floor sanders to do the job.

We have been sanding Scotland’s floors for over 30 years, to us, floor sanding is a carefully orchestrated symphony. We have a dustless sander, that leaves a 100% dust-free smooth finish.

People sand a floor to have it refinished.  This is the bit where most people have the professionals in, ironically the professional is less essential at this stage than at the sanding stage.

Yes, re-finishing a floor is very difficult, and a DIYer is much less likely to make the floor as good as new than a professional, but at the same time, any mistakes made during the finishing stages are much less likely to be fatal for a portion of the floor, and they are much more reversible.

William Pearce of the Fairfield Shipyard died in 1888. In his memory, Lady Pearce commissioned the erection at Govan Cross of a magnificent institute for the men and women of Govan, in a pastiche of a 17th century townhouse designed by Sir Robert Rowand Anderson. The first departments of the Pearce Institute first opened in 1904. It offered Govanites a men's and women's reading rooms and clubs, a library, a gymnasium, cooking and laundry departments, and a retiring room. The MacLeod Hall provided a grand venue for dances and social gatherings, with its organ, stage and gallery. On the wall at the entrance to the Pearce Institute is the welcome: “This is a House of Friendship. This is a House of Service. For Families, For Lonely Folk. For the People of Govan.

    1: Peace of Mind

Depending on whether you buy new, reclaimed or even engineered wood flooring will affect the price, but nevertheless, flooring a house or even a room in wood is not a cheap thing to do. Don’t get me wrong it is definitely worth it, to take people’s breath away when they enter your house or room alone.

The last thing you want to do is damage it, or do a sub-standard job. Bringing in the professionals is worth it if only for the peace of mind of knowing that they will leave the floor as good as when it was new.

    2: Quality Guarantees

I can’t speak for all floor sanding companies, but Edinburgh Floor Sanders (AKA Mckay Flooring) offer full guarantees upon the quality of our work, and as we have an exemplary reputation after 37 years operation our guarantees really mean something – we want to maintain our reputation for first-rate work.

We don’t sub-contract to any outside contractors, all our work is done by our in-house team of professional, experienced floor sanders, fitters and finishers, and using nothing buy the latest dustless floor sanding machinery.

    3: Value for Money

This really encapsulates the two points made above. Value for money comes from the fact that the cost, which isn’t as much as you may think, is well worth it for the peace of mind of knowing that your floor is guaranteed to look as good as new when the work is completed. This also means fully sealed and once-again resistant to water and damage.

When Does My Wood Floor Need Sanding?

This is a very difficult question to answer, because there is no set duration in which you should have your floor sanded. A floor’s life is determined by how many times it is sanded; when it has been sanded down till the point where one more sanding will expose take it past the grooves of the locking mechanism which holds the floor together, a new floor is needed. Therefore minimising the amount of times your floor is sanded is the best policy to prolong the life of a floor.

That being said one of the main reasons for buying wood flooring is because of its lustre and shine, which is ultimately gorgeous by anyone’s standards. So, when that shine starts to fade obviously it needs to be sanded and refinished. Another common reason that sanding will become necessary is when a floor gets badly scraped or scratched.

Floor sanding is not the big scary; to professional floor sanders it is a quick and easy job, which means inexpensive to floor owners. However, to ensure that floor sanding is kept to a minimum here are some steps you can take in caring for your floor, so as to maximise its life:

    Protecting Your Hardwood Floors

    Place mats at all entrances:

These are to trap dirt and dust which scrape and damage hardwood flooring.

Mop Up Water and Spillages Immediately

Any spillage on hardwood floors must be cleaned up immediately. On carpets spillages of water are not such a big deal, but on hardwood water can cause warping and damage to the finish.

    Felt Contacts Under Furniture Legs

This one is fairly self explanatory: stick little felt mats underneath furniture legs so that they don't scratch your floor when being moved.

Sheer Drapes and Protection from Direct Sunlight

Direct sunlight is one of hardwood flooring's biggest enemies; one summer of direct sunlight beating down on a wood floor can discolour it badly enough that sanding becomes essential. Obviously this can be avoided by closing blinds and curtains, but if you want to let the light in, and keep your floors beautiful then sheer drapes are your best bet.

Cleaning Your Hardwood Floors (Regular Care):

    Brushing:

Use a soft brush, preferably one with exploded-end bristles.

    Vacuuming:

We recommend using bare floor attachments with brushes to avoid damaging the floor. Vacuuming in the traditional sense is very rarely a good idea on hardwood floors and can in itself make sanding neccesary.

    Dust Mopping:

Dust mopping is a specialist way of cleaning hardwood floors. We recommend a large dust mop with a head of around 12-18 inches. This should be used with a specialist dust-mopping solution, which is applied to the mop 12-24 hours before mopping is carried out.

    Cleaning Hardwood Floors (Deep Cleaning):

    Damp Mopping:

Though some people will tell you that hardwood floors should never be mopped wet or damp, it is the easiest and most efficient way to deep clean hardwood floors. Damp mopping should only be done if the floors are properly and completely sealed; put another way it should not be done if there is any doubt about or damage to the floors finish.

Then you should use a ph neutral wood cleaning product, diluted with water as per the guidelines. The mop should be dipped in the solution and then wrung out so that it is half dry before mopping. I was in two minds as to whether to put this in the regular care section, because some households will need to damp-mop their floors up to once a week, which is perfectly fine, as I said, provided the floor is completely sealed.

    Heavy Duty Mopping:

Again this sounds a disastrously bad idea, but again if the floors are properly sealed, the little extra water and solution will do them absolutely no harm. Done properly heavy duty mopping can really bring back the shine.

    Waxing:

Also known as a maintenance coat, waxing is a sure-fire, quick and easy way to make damaged or worn floors beautiful once again, and it is something that a layman can do. A coat of wax provides a layer of protection on the wood, and it is the wax that you will be cleaning from then forward, it can also be reapplied as and when needed, keeping floors beautiful.

However, if you are having your floor professionally refinished, waxing should be avoided as a stop-gap measure, as it can lead to problems with adhesion and can limit your refinishing options.

For the Strangers of the World. Welcome.”

Wood Flooring is Just Gorgeous Period

As some of you will know I am an avid follower of literally dozens of wood flooring and reclaimed flooring blogs, and it doesn’t matter how many different and wonderful wood flooring creations I see I am always filled with a feeling of awe by shine of  the deep lustre finishes.

I have written a series on individual wood flooring species called Flooring in Focus over at the Wood Floor Guru blog, and almost every article (and maybe every single article) starts by saying that the brand and species of wood flooring chosen for that particular post is the most gorgeous I have ever seen.

This, I have now realised is because, at that time when I see it, this feeling of awe makes me forget my previous favourite and write excitedly that this one is now my favourite wood floor in terms of beauty.

What brought me to this realisation river-reclaimedwas a Tweet about a wood floor that had been crafted from wood reclaimed from the St John’s River in Orlando.

We all know that wood and water do not mix, and when I clicked on the link to the image  I expected it to be “OK” but I expected it to be almost immediately visible that the wood used had spent a considerable amount of time semi-submerged in fast-flowing freshwater.

Amazingly it wasn’t. I was filled with the same -- “oh my god that is just gorgeous” -- feeling that inspired this article about the realisation that wood flooring, properly laid and finished is always going to be absolutely gorgeous.

Don’t get me wrong; you can tell that the wood in that picture is different to your average wood, and while it is reclaimed it has a new-like surface. But this all gives it its own unique character.

That is one of the greatest things about reclaimed flooring, apart from the price and the green aspect; that it has character and history to it.

Every wood floor new and old is different and unique and with its own character, but on reclaimed floorboards every blemish represents a story from its past.

Things to Consider When Thinking About Buying Laminate Flooring

Laying laminate flooring is in the top 10 of easiest things in the world to do, providing that you can do things like using a saw and a measuring tape. I like to think of myself as a man about the house, capable of turning his hand to anything, and I am, most things. But when it comes to using a saw then you better make sure you get me plenty of extra wood, because boy am I gonna need it.

So, when it comes to putting up a home-made shelf, that is okay, just buy a couple of planks instead of one, for me to get my groove on with the saw; I'll be cutting straight and just about have enough wood left to use as a suitable shelf. But when it comes to laminate flooring, even though it is less expensive than hardwood flooring, it is still too costly to be having to buy tons extra for cutting mistakes.

If you are the same as me with a saw then you are left with three options: a: hire a professional to come in and lay the floor for you, b: hire a power saw that will ensure straight cuts, or c: buy one of them new handheld saws that supposedly practically lay laminate flooring for you.

Option A: a diy'ers worst nightmare is actually one of the best options when it comes to laying laminate flooring. A professional floorer can lay several hundred square meters of laminate flooring in a working day. This means that, while their time is expensive by the hour, to have your laminate floor laid professionally, quickly, hassle-free and worry-free is well worth the price.

Option B: hiring a power saw is a good option for a diy'er. Of course you need a bench with something to grip the plank, and/or someone to help hold it, but draw a line across the wood and a strong monkey could cut the line across the plank straight with a power saw.

Option C: I have seen the infomercials and boy is that new fangled saw perfect for laying laminate flooring. Do you know it actually has a disc adjustment that you can set to the exact thickness of your laminate flooring planks, "so you can cut in situ"? No? Neither do I really. What I do know is that the products bought from TV infomercials are rarely as good as the sellers' make out.

Of course there is still the good old handsaw for those who are more saw-friendly than I.

Whichever option you choose will not alter the fact that laminate flooring is very easy to lay. It clicks, sits or glues together straight on to the floorboards (underlay attached to floor on most brands), no nails and no hassle. And therein lies the next choice: glue together, tongue and groove, or click-lock (AKA quickstep).

If you are going it alone you will want to use one of the latter-two as these are the easiest to lay. But if you are just buying the floor and having a professional in to fit it then you may want to consider glue together, as it is more resistant against moisture.

Now that you know the choices that lie before you in your decision to buy laminate flooring, then you can make an educated guess and I can go home happy.

Message to the Designer in all of us: Wood Flooring is Far from Boring

Hardwood or solid wood flooring sounds really quite boring. Laymen must imagine planks of boring old wood laid across the floor for no other possible reason than the owner choosing practicality and life expectancy over appearance and artistic flair.

While we forgive people, especially interior designers for making this mistaken assumption, at the same time we feel it is our duty to dispel these ancient myths.

Far from being un-malleable and purely practical, hardwood is one of the most versatile floor coverings known to man. You haven't lived until you've seen wood flooring of various shades covering a floor in the form of a roman-style mosaic. This can simply be a mixed species standard mosaic as pictured to the left, or it could be depicting anything from a floral pattern to an African safari landscape.

But even that isn't enough for some people. Check out the images below, which shows printed wood flooring (left) and Jigsaw Puzzle flooring (right):

    Printed-Wood-Flooring-by-Model-Hardwood_002wood-puzzle-floor

These are some ideas that we found on the web in a very short space of time. The message here is that wood doesn't need to be boring; it can be from as mildly different from to as whacky as you want it to be.

To us a standard wood floor is the most beautiful thing in the world, all shiny and wholesome. But it is amazing the different look it has simply by putting a cross shape through it in either the same or a different species, and either from mid-wall to mid-wall or from corner to corner.

Then it is different again if you use that cross as a divider between different effects, either the boards laid at a different angle, or even a different species of wood at different or the same angle. We don't recommend painting our beautiful wood floors, but you guys are the designers; imagine a cross from corner to corner splitting up a white wood and a black wood floors, or even a ying yang shape all in real wood. Stunning!

The world is your oyster. All the while you have the knowledge that -- if properly cared for -- the floor you lay is a floor for life.

Garrison House Millport - Case Study

    Garrison HouseGarrison House
    • Project: Restoration of Grade B listed House
    • Year of completion: Spring 2008
    • Client: Cumbrae Community Development Company
    • Project Value: £4.5m
    • Architect: Lee Boyd Architects
Garrison House is a Grade B listed traditional stone masonry building overlooking the Firth of Clyde at Millport which has served a multitude of purposes and in many ways sat at the heart of the local community, until a fire destroyed almost the entire fabric of the building. The building has been returned to its former splendour and house a new library, museum, surgery and community facilities. To achieve this a sensitive approach has been required to retain as much of the existing fabric as possible whilst accepting the limitations set by the fragile and waterlogged state of the fabric. To meet the client and Architectural aspirations on space and utility there had to be careful planning and thoughtful surveys of the existing structure, its condition and its suitability for re-use. This all had to be accommodated within the overall context of archaeological and conservation constraints. The difficult exercise of remodeling levels and combining disparate materials in challenging arrangements makes for an enjoyable and satisfying project which will regenerate and reinvigorate the local community.

The Parkville hotel’s Buckfast cheesecake and other twists on old favourites will grab headlines but clog arteries

A Buckfast buck: the Parkville Hotel is trying to cash in on Caledonian kitsch.

Are you a Scottish restaurateur? Do you need publicity? Well, get out the handbook and follow rule number one: introduce onto your menu a dish incorporating at least one element from the kitschy ice-cream van of common Caledonian favourites.
Deep-fried Mars Bar petits fours, Irn-Bru sorbet, Arran tablet with a Snowball parfait. The combination of familiarity with novelty and the added twist of couthy ingenuity spiced with patriotic pride; it’ll get your establishment five minutes on Reporting Scotland guaranteed.
Wacky regionalism is the Find the Lady of food culture. Each time it happens we clasp our foreheads and swear we won’t get fooled again. And then some chippy in Ullapool invents Macaroon Bar pizza and the centre spread is cleared for in-depth coverage. It’s happened again. The Parkville hotel is in Blantyre, a sector of South Lanarkshire that looks as though an international cartel of scaffolding erectors and tanning parlour operators left five minutes before you arrived. They’re started offering a dessert of Buckfast cheesecake.
That’s correct: Buckfast, the same noxious loon-juice which some claim reduces the area’s youth to vomit-flecked statistics whenever there’s a full moon; the same stuff that makes South Lanarkshire a byword for a long string of panicked vowels followed by a large number of exclamation marks. And now it’s been turned into the topping of a dessert designed to give those with the fortunate ability to get out of Blantyre the chance to say: “Oh, how witty. You can almost taste the disapproval of Kenny MacAskill and the tang of Stanley knife on cheek. Mmmm. Really, a triumph.”
A vile idea, isn’t it? But it isn’t the only rubbish notion the Parkville, in its custom-built box of modern corporate anonymity, has been pleased to have. It was a menu that offered the full panoply of prepared hot and bulky artery-laggers.
Basically, if it possesses the power to send you to your GP complaining you can no longer walk up stairs, then the Parkville will serve it. Sadly I wasn’t able to try the Black and Blue, a big meat discus of burger topped with black pudding and blue cheese. I mean, that’s just insult to injury. No longer are we in the realm of food and dining, people — we are in a dark place where greed, ignorance and recklessness are manning the barbecue.
For a starter, I was spoilt for choice; or rather the choice was spoilt by what was on offer. I could have had the haggis fritters. Or the deep-fried Scottish brie. Or the onion rings. Or the slabs of bread with Polyfilla mozzarella on top.
Or I could have had all of these on one plate, by means of a dish known as the Big Stoater. Ordering this out loud was almost as bad as eating it: “Could I have the . . . um . . . Big . . . yup, that one . . . right . . . there.” The waitress compounded the embarrassment halfway through by coming over to ask: “And how is your Stoater, sir?” It’s like eating hot, greasy gravel after it’s been swilled in a vat of offal. Next question.
Mains was stovies. Normally stovies are thick and sticky and come in a bowl. These were thin and dribbly and came on a plate, incorporating a few unidentifiable chunks of Spam-like protein to bulk it out. And then, finally, it was time for the Buckfast cheesecake. This was much like most cheesecakes but with a thin layer of gelatinous purple topping. There wasn’t much to say. It was just cheesecake, though the very idea of it did leave a bad aftertaste.
The Parkville, 296 Glasgow Road, Blantyre, 01698 822861, dinner for two with wine £45

bauclic laminate flooring - cheaper alternative to wood floors & Quickstep

Our new showroom has a dedicated area for laminate flooring. In the past we have only stocked QuickStep laminate which became a worldwide hit due to it's quality and range of designs. 2009 sees the emergence of Bauclic as a cheaper alternative to both Quick-Step and to wood flooring. Without compromising on quality or durability Bauclic offers a fantastic range of laminate designs including the classic handscraped look and v-groove edges.
Since we created the Bauclic area within our new showroom in Glasgow both public and trade customers have been taken aback due to the laminate's uncanny resemblence to real wood. Bauclic is also less expensive than both Quick Step and real wood flooring which means great value during the Credit Crunch. For more info or to request a free sample please get in touch.

    Leather flooring

Our new leather floors have really captured the UK public's imagination and we've been inundated with enquiries about this exciting product. People are curious as to how flooring can be made of leather. The leather floors are very durable and hard to touch. Torly's who make this product offer a 25 year warranty which shows an unshakeable faith in this product. It really is a winning product when you consider it is made from 100% recycled leather.

Although we offer the full fitting service it's really easy to install the leather flooring yourself. If you have fitted a laminate floor you will be used to the structure of the click system board. This revolutionary system means that keen DIY'ers , joiners and floor fitters can all install with ease. Please contact us today for a free sample of this exciting new flooring.

Our new showroom - nearly there.....

Since the opening of our new flooring showroom in Govan we have had fun taking the shell of the building and creating a space which we feel represents the forward looking views of McKay Flooring. We have installed lots of roof lights in our Glasgow wood floor store to ensure that natural light helps us exhibit our products. We are looking forward to displaying our Tuscan wood flooring, Kahrs wooden floors and Junkers wood flooring. Our products themselves are mostly natural - granite, wood and leather and lend themselves to a showroom setting. We have added wifi and also a terminal for customers to browse the internet and perhaps check out our Twitter, Facebook and website.
The final stages are underway - a wall exhibiting our eco-credentials. The wall is devoted to Storm Harvest - a new range of wood flooring that has been created from windblown trees felled locally (i.e. Glasgow's parks and green spaces). These trees would normally be put into landfill but have been given a new lease of 'life' by reusing them as wood flooring products.
The other section of our 'eco-wall' highlights McKay Flooring's commitment to cutting down on waste. We have showcased 3 ideas for utilising our offcuts into cool, contemporary 'patchwork' floors.
We realise that these are baby steps in becoming a more eco responsible company and will endeavour to roll out more initiatives in the next 12 months.

    Cork Flooring by Torlys

McKay Flooring have introduced Torly's Cork Flooring to accompany the Torly's Leather Floor tiles range. The cork flooring is available in both tile and plank and is built on a Uniclic system meaning that it's very easy to install.
Cork floors are made without cutting down cork oak trees. The cork bark is very carefully harvested, once every 9 years using hand tools. This process ensures that forests will remain undamaged. It is common to have 200 year old trees still producing cork bark!
Cork flooring is hypo-allergenic and insect resistant due to a natural occuring substance in cork called Suberin.
By using different colours of cork floor tiles it's possible to create a chequerboard effect.
