My friend Darren Keen’s project Bad Speler did a lovely remix of Whitney Houston’s “How Will I Know?”
Happy Valentine’s Day, kiddos.
Cupid Valentino may have missed the mark this year, but I won’t.
Oh hey, remember that third time/second year we won an OEAA for Best Singer-Songwriter/Adult Alternative [to what]?
Minnesotan Caroline Smith is performing along with her band, The Good Night Sleeps Feb. 16 at O’Leavers (details below). She generously takes the time to share with Les Femmes Folles about growing up in a musical family, how feminism plays a major role in her creative work, and more…
Also, Midwest Dilemma was just added to this show. BOY HOWDY, TODAY IS A GOOD DAY!!!
(Psssst…there’s a new AYGAMG track in that link.)
So, I’m playing at O’Leavers, Thursday, February 16th with Caroline Smith and The Good Night Sleeps. I am so ridiculously excited and terrified for this. I played with them the last time they were in town and I botched it up real good because that, my friends, was the last time I got drunk. Then they turned out to be ah-mazing and I felt like utter crap for boozing on their time. I didn’t take a penny and bought a cd and now I will be making up for it by advertising the hell out of this little show.
They are ridiculous. It is ridiculous how good they are. SO good. You should come…but only if you’re older than 21 (sorry).
So, our January hiatus is coming to an end. Sweet, sweet February is a’comin. We’re gonna start playing again, but not nearly to the same “candle at both ends” level. We’re going to give you something to really sink your teeth into.
I can’t wait.
February:

Bolded date indicates a full band show.
RIP: Etta James, the legendary genre-spanning singer who gave the world many memorable hits including “At Last” and “The Wallflower,” has passed away. She was 73.
James, who was diagnosed with leukemia 2010, had been in poor health for some time.
Affectionately known as Miss Peaches, the Matriarch of R&B had multiple Grammys to her name, and was inducted into both the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Blues Hall of Fame.
Incidentally, the man who discovered James, Johnny Otis, passed away just yesterday.
Below: James sings “Something’s Got A Hold On Me” in 1962.

This is a very sad day, indeed.
Ebony Tusks - Everybody Run
Ebony Tusks is my friend Marty’s side project. Pretty dope.
This is the biggest picture I’ve drawn in the past three years. It was for a banned book week in 2010. I like working big but it’s so much more expensive (except when it’s sidewalk chalk).
I thought Sally of Les Femmes Folles might enjoy that I still have this.
So, in AYGAMG news:
We made a resolution this year and a plan for recording.
Our resolution this year is to, at the very least, act like we understand our worth. We have worked very hard to to get to the point we’ve reached, and we would like that reflected in the gigs we take. So, if we’re playing less than you would like, we apologize. When we do play, we’re going to do our best to knock your socks off and make it worth all of your patience.
We will be recording soon. We have more than enough songs to record another album, and so we will. We’re going to take a little more time to do it than the last album, we’re also going to take a little more risk. We’re currently trying to nail down exactly what we think will work right now and make decisions on what we could put on the back burner for whatever comes in the future. We have time available to us that was spent, in the past, playing as often as we could. We are instead going to use that time to make you something really special.
So, that being said, if you see that I’ve taken the time to go to an open mic night, that might be your best chance of catching any hints of what’s to come.
Also, I don’t remember if I mentioned this here, but we were nominated for another Omaha Entertainment and Arts Award this year in the category of Best Adult Alternative/Singer-Songwriter. The big show is February 13th. So, I’ll let you know how that goes down.
We’ll be seeing you,
Becks
