It’s true. “Common sense” as a concept has never existed in any way, shape, or form. It’s hyperbole that everyone takes literally. I advise you to stop using those words in any and all sentences until further notice.

Now, most people, when you say “common sense doesn’t exist,” will think that…

The King is dead... long live the King!

We now have a new website :: ahintofbergamot.com :: and a new pool on Flickr that is open to all.

The way we are working the site is as follows...

  1. On Sundays we will post a theme on ahintofbergamot.com for the coming week... this week coming, for example, is 'old'. You are free to interpret the theme as you wish.
  2. Take a photo or photos and upload them to the pool in Flickr. You can only post 3 pics per day to the pool (please - no nudity or profanity).
  3. The best of the pics will then be posted to ahintofbergamot.com. Please ensure your Flickr settings allow us to repost your pics. You will be credited too.
  4. That's it for now. We are looking at expanding the site and the themes in due course... but want to walk before we run.
Please join us over at ahintofbergamot.com and start contributing to the blog.

As for this site, it will not be killed... but it also won't be updated. We'll keep it as a record and an archive.

Happy New Year

... to everyone who may still read this blog or have it languishing in their RSS. As you can see from the wee graph above... participation in this blog has waned since it started back in 2009. I, for one, am guilty of forgetting about it... and for that I am sorry.

 However... out with the old and in with the new... I recently announced on twitter that I was "looking to refresh the blog and photo submission process."

I do believe it is time for a fresh coat of paint... and wanted let you know that moves are afoot to launch a new blog... from the ashes of this one... with a new, simpler submission process.

I am delighted to say that Laura Bridge has agreed to work with me on this... and I will be looking for more contributors in due course. We won't be asking folks to submit photos to the blog... we'll take care of that for you... all we will be looking for is people to submit to the Flickr pool.

The purpose of the blog will be twofold - (1) to encourage folks to take photos and challenge them to do so ... and (2) to showcase these photos. We will be working to a weekly "theme" that we'll ask participants to work to... with the best of these submissions shown on the blog.

To this end... can I ask anyone who wishes to journey with us on this to consider "new" as this week's theme. Interpret "new" as you want... and I'll be in touch with how you can submit in due course.

Thanks and here's to 2012.

Not special because of the inherent qualities of the bike, or because of my skill in riding, but for the sensations of a relaxed ride on a gloriously warm evening. The wind, the smell of country air as you meander along winding roads, the views out over lush green fields with the sun shining through the reddening leaves of autumn-touched trees.

Waterstones to rival Amazon Kindle with own e-reader

Posted by Luke Johnson on Fri 9 Sep 2011

Waterstones has set a release date for its own e-reader device as it targets the Amazon Kindle

Following the success of the Amazon Kindle and the decline in physical book sales high street retailer Waterstones has announced it is to launch a dedicated Waterstones e-reader next year.

Looking to emulate the popularity of the Kindle and taking note of the move by US book retailer Barnes & Noble which released the Nook, Waterstones’ Managing Director James Daunt has confirmed the company’s own e-reader will hit stores in 2012.

"We in Waterstone's need to offer you a digital reader which is at least as good, and preferably substantially better, than that of our internet rival, and you will have a much better buying experience purchasing your books through us," Daunt announced.

Whilst specifications of the upcoming Waterstones’ e-reader have yet to be revealed Daunt stated that the project was “well down the planning line” with a Spring 2012 release date being pencilled in.

Could a Waterstones e-reader really challenge the market dominance of the Amazon Kindle? Let us know what you think via the T3 Twitter and Facebook feeds.

A quote online :

"A little fear and intimidation in the right measure can help teach respect for authority. Those on the streets of the country tonight know no fear, and no boundaries, no line at which society can say "This far, and not an inch further". They are untouchable - lay a hand on them and they'll "get the law on you". Tonight as a nation we have to say "this far......and NO FURTHER". The country has had enough."

Agree with the sentiment of the quote - but more importantly #PrayForLondon & hope that this stupidity doesn't spread....

  • Phone hacking: News International chief Brooks quits

    Rebekah Brooks: Resigned after weeks of pressure

    Rebekah Brooks, chief executive of News International, has resigned, the company has confirmed.

    Her departure follows days of growing pressure for her to step down as the phone hacking crisis grew.

    In a statement, she said she felt a "deep responsibility for the people we have hurt".

    She was editor of the News of the World when murder victim Milly Dowler's phone was hacked.

    Ms Brooks said she wanted to "reiterate how sorry I am for what we now know to have taken place".

    Her statement went on: "I have believed that the right and responsible action has been to lead us through the heat of the crisis. However my desire to remain on the bridge has made me a focal point of the debate.

    "This is now detracting attention from all our honest endeavours to fix the problems of the past."

    Should have happened long before now!
    (so what has Murdoch promised her is the question?)

    Welcome to the Caledonian Mercury

    January 22, 2010 by Stewart Kirkpatrick ·

    Ne quid false dicere audeas, ne quid veri non

    We are proud to welcome you to the Caledonian Mercury, Scotland’s first truly online newspaper. The Mercurius Caledonius was Scotland’s first print newspaper, founded in 1660 by Thomas Sydserf. We have revived its historic title because we lay claim to the great Scottish tradition of journalistic innovation.

    We seek to revive Scottish journalism by using the internet rather than railing against it. The Caledonian Mercury stands for intelligent reporting, informed analysis and raising the standard of debate in Scottish life. It also seeks to return journalism to journalists and is a platform to display the work of selected specialist writers – freed from the demands of filling space, toeing the line and “feeding the beast”.

    We believe that there has never been a better time to  be in the business of journalism, never a better time to find fascinating stories and never a better time to be part of a conversation with our readers. The internet frees us from machine media and brings us closer to the people who inspire and consume our writing.

    As you may deduce from our name and masthead we are not ashamed of our Scottishness. We have no time for the cringing pessimism that characterises so much of our nation’s life today. No, we are proud of Scotland’s history and traditions. At the same time, we are confident about its future and secure in its role in the modern world. For us Scotland is only truly herself when she is outward looking and inventive.

    The Scottish cringe did not invent the telephone, RADAR or the television.  The principle of “Ah kent yer faither” did not give birth to ideas that Enlightened the world. It is with that in mind that we have unveiled this very different newspaper. It is radically different from what has gone before. That is no accident.

    We will not pretend to cover every story. We shall certainly avoid chasing after what has been done elsewhere. Instead we shall focus on the areas of our writers’ expertise, freed from any diktats from the Editor’s chair. And instead of following the pack we will seek out our own path. Our purpose is to provide in-depth and unique coverage of specific areas of Scottish life. Our print edition will not be daily or weekly and will celebrate the debate we hope our writing provokes.

    This newspaper is an experiment in the evolution of media. It is a statement of belief in a better public life. It does not fear the possibility of failure and instead relishes the prospect of change.

    Most importantly, it holds dear the pledge of its antecedent: “To assert no falsehood and to hide no truth.”

    Share and Enjoy: -->

    Interesting Endeavour...
    I don't read hard copy newspapers any more (for many years in fact) except the odd @iPaper at 20p.
    Curious how this on-line & Scottish "paper" does....

    And is it economically sustainable or even necessary in today's "instant news" age?

    "The only commodity we have is time. Somewhere—in your mind, on a notepad, stashed in a virtual notebook—you have a list of things you’d like to be doing with your time before it all slips away. Do what you have to do to take those ideas out of storage and make them happen.
    You can trade and barter for a lot in life but you can never buy back time. Go live."

    If You Still Can’t Discipline Yourself After Reading This Article, I Swear to God I’m Going to Scream

    Life is not a Nike commercial.

    Being told to “just do it” is not enough.

    If it was, you would have “just done it” by now.

    BURN THIS INTO YOUR MIND: Self-discipline requires hard and consistent mental, physical and emotional labor.

    It is not the path of convenience.
    It is not a glamorous way of living and working.
    It is not something most people are going notice about you.

    But.

    As I learned from self-discipline strategist Rory Vaden, “Those who learn to deal with discipline gently and persistently (eventually) flip a switch that they can never turn off.”

    And that’s when discipline turns into freedom.

    Let’s explore a list of strategies to help you sink into self-discipline:
    1. Commitment is the offspring of values. If you can’t discipline yourself to do something every day, there’s only one explanation: It’s simply not that important to you.

    People always make time – not find time, but make time – for what matters to them. That’s how commitment works: It deletes distraction. It makes you wake up early. It turns habits into non-negotiables. When you’re committed, you drop everything and get to work. Every day.

    The hard part is telling the truth about your current level of commitment. And if you’re having trouble with that, here’s an exercise you might try: Write down a list of the five things you’re most committed to. Then open your calendar. See if your life agrees.

    If you’re not happy with the result, either find something else that is important to you and commit to that, or take the current thing that isn’t important to you and reframe it as – or reconnect it with – something else that is. How will you use commitment to open the door to discipline?

    2. Bait multiple hooks. If you inherited five million dollars tomorrow, would you invest all of it in one stock? Of course not. You’d diversify it across several accounts. That way your portfolio would have a stronger foundation, making it less vulnerable to external conditions.

    This same principle applies to creative professionals who have trouble disciplining themselves. Personally, I’m always working on about fifty things at once. Because in my experience, attacking multiple projects simultaneously has several advantages.

    First, it prevents burnout. That’s what happens when your creative efforts are more diversely deployed: You don’t give yourself the chance to get sick of something and abandon it.

    Second, by varying your creative endeavors, you establish thought bridges, subconscious connections and unexpected integrations between seemingly unrelated ideas. And as a result, you start to notice natural relationships and structures in your work you never would have seen by working on a single project.

    Ultimately, this approach relaxes the process and helps contribute to greater consistency in your body of work. Are you willing to allocate your creativity attention to multiple endeavors?

    3. Build a portable creative environment. A real artist can be creative any time, any place, with any tools. That’s the mark of a master: She shapes her immediate surroundings to feel in harmony with the small slice of the universe in which she finds herself.

    As I learned in Beyond Boredom and Anxiety, “Whether the conditions in which they find themselves are luxurious or miserable, geniuses manage to give their surroundings a personal pattern that echoes the rhythm of their thoughts and habits of action. Within this environment of their own making, they can forget the rest of the world and concentrate on pursuing the muse.”

    What are your portable creative environments? What enables you to enter into the creative flow at the drop of a hat? Have these on standby at all times. You’ll discover that by keeping alternative workspaces ready to go with transportable lightning rods tailor made to your tendencies, you’ll feel more in control of your surroundings.

    That way, when inspiration comes unannounced, you’ll be ready to pounce. Can you do what you do anywhere?

    4. Discipline derives from the wellspring of why. Willpower is overrated. If you want execute what matters most – every single day – you need to tap the reservoir of whypower.

    Here’s the reason: When you actively cultivate the purpose driven nature of your work, discipline becomes a non-thought. What was once a desire becomes a habit. And what was once a habit becomes a non-negotiable. A positive addiction. Just something you do.

    That’s why I’m able to write for seven hours a day, every day: Because I keep a list of one hundred reasons why I do what I do, in my wallet, and I read it to myself every morning. That’s your challenge: To become a walking translation of stunning clarity of purpose. To pinpoint the deepest motivations behind what you’re trying to discipline yourself to do. Find that, and you’ll have no problem slogging it out every day.

    Remember: Daily bread without daily meaning tastes like daily crap. How are you fueling your discipline with a firm why?

    5. Cultivate a more acute sense of resistance. Part of self-discipline is learning how to override yourself. That means becoming a master of your disinclination. That means discovering what frustrates your ambitions. And that means not allowing yourself the indulgence of saying you’re too busy.

    Here’s the reality: The problem isn’t decreasing productivity – it’s diluted priorities. And you will lose the discipline game if you fall victim to what’s latest and loudest.

    My suggestion: Extinguish whatever distractions seduce you. Drown out the world’s chatter and find the energy that urges you forward. And for the love of David Allen, stop performing minor tasks that engulf you in pointless, trivial action.

    Instead, create around the constraint. Take the energy you’ve been burning on creative avoidance and redirect it to help you execute what matters. What’s your system for stamping out redundancy?

    LOOK: It's not my job to convince you to be more disciplined.

    It’s hard work that nobody undertakes but you.
    It’s unspectacular work that nobody notices but you.
    It’s inconvenient work that nobody appreciates but you.

    But discipline does mean freedom.

    Freedom to be, freedom to do and freedom to have – pretty much anything.

    I think it’s worth it.

    LET ME ASK YA THIS…
    How discipline are you prepared to be?

    LET ME SUGGEST THIS…

    You had me at the title! Thank you for the great reminder that self-discipline equals freedom. I am off to write my list of why. Everyday I ask myself this question because luckily I didn't have to start a career at 45 but my why is my whyny. Now I get it.

    This is just what I needed today, thank you!

    My Opinion Mashed Quickly into my Keyboard:

    Changing your FB profile pic might have been...

    a scam-inside a hoax-inside a small minded nonsense-

    BUT it was never doing any substantial or real world harm!

    Misleading? Yes! Encouraging Paedophilia? NO! A Waste of Time? Perhaps?!

    BUT where those people on Facebook changed their pics & feel they contributed in some way to something tainted / unclean / misleading... PLEASE Do NOT feel that way!!!

    Instead consider this...Many people got talking about Child Abuse, Domestic Violence & other harm being cause within homes & families.

    That CANNOT be a bad thing.

    Some people on Facebook even posted links & videos highlighting abuse in all its forms; As well as singling out  the organisations/charities that deal with these (wrongly whispered) things.

    That IS NOT a bad thing.

    As with all things Internet (especially social networks) the minute it was in the digital ether it became what the groundswell(s) created & i would like to think that most of us created good....

    That's why for the moment my Profile Picture on Facebook will NOT change - Good far far outweighs Bad!

    Also because I'm not done shouting (highlighting) instead of whispering!

    In the meantime you can follow me at the usual online places to stay updated on my (slow) progress:

    It does mean that this blog you're reading is serving it's final duties...
    It has served me well, despite being neglected & left to virtually gather dust for most of the past year.

    Hopefully with when the new site & blog are released into the wilds of the Internet, it will give me the boost to bring you bigger & better blogging goodness!?

    A quote online :

    "A little fear and intimidation in the right measure can help teach respect for authority. Those on the streets of the country tonight know no fear, and no boundaries, no line at which society can say "This far, and not an inch further". They are untouchable - lay a hand on them and they'll "get the law on you". Tonight as a nation we have to say "this far......and NO FURTHER". The country has had enough."

    ---

    Agree with the sentiment of the quote - but more importantly #PrayForLondon & hope that this stupidity doesn't spread....

    Share and Enjoy: -->

Go live."

    "Last week we posted leaked footage of a supposed live live action, dark, gritty Pokemon movie. After a week of sleuthing, we finally managed to get the full story of the project. We are able to confirm there is not a Hollywood budgeted production of Pokemon happening.
    Under the circumstances in which we received the footage, it was unlikely that there was actually a movie coming to a theater near you; however, the time, money and manpower needed to create a trailer of that quality left many people certain this movie was legit. Especially when you consider the utterly appalling, disgraceful and insulting anime live action films that have been released in North America.
    The comments received on our YouTube post were really the best part of this story. For the past week the internet has essentially been divided into two very distinct camps since the leak. Do want, and burn it with fire."
    ----------
    Dunno what to make of this...
    Does it soil the name & memory of Pokemon?
    Or is it a Geek-Fest of a great idea & a homage to a enduring franchise?
    Either way my 18yr old son & (allegedly former) Pokemon daft child fanatic loves it!
    What do you think?

    "My son Alexander is an ACF {Army Cadet Force} cadet in the Pipes & Drums {he's a Drums part :)} Alexr is 1 of only a handful {2 or 3 I think} of ACF cadets from this part of Scotland taking part in the ACF Band!
    Very proud of him {despite me being an ATC "Air Training Corps" Cadet of 8yrs - a long time ago!}
    So chuffed that the Cadet Forces of UK are getting this high profile celebration....

    They do some amazing things - with some amazing people be they the Cadets or the Adult Volunteers - Can & do give confidence to face life head on ~ Never mind how fun & unique a challenge it can be!!!
    So give them your support & recognition in every way possible!
    *Hope to post or link to pictures in the future*"

     ~~~~~~~~~
    On Tuesday 6th July, cadets and adult volunteers from around the country and from the MOD’s sponsored cadet forces will take part in the Cadet 150 Royal Review at Buckingham Palace.
    Almost 1700 individuals from the MOD’s 4 cadet forces, the Combined Cadet Force, Sea Cadet Corps, Army Cadet Force and Air Training Corps will converge in the early afternoon at Horse Guards Parade and set off for Buckingham Palace. Each cadet force will be led by its own band and all followed up by a combined Pipe band.
    Whilst the marching contingents are parading along the Mall, banners unfurled, the Red Arrows will make an overflight and in each plane, a cadet from one of the cadet forces will be a passenger.
    Paying respects to VIP representatives of the Cadet Forces en route, the parade will march into Wellington Barracks, close to Buckingham Palace in preparation for the Garden Party at the Palace.
    Around 3.30 pm, a ceremonial detachment of 400 cadets, 100 from each force, will march into Buckingham Palace to await the arrival of members of the Royal Family.
    At 4.00 pm, members of the Royal Family will arrive and move through the ceremonial detachments and thence through routes lined by almost 800 cadets and adult volunteers where they will meet members of the Cadet Forces.
    The event will close at 6.00 pm
    South Portland Street Suspension Bridge, Glasgow
    via - headphonaught
    This bridge was begun in 1851 and suffered a set-back during its construction.
    After the masonry towers had been completed and the main suspension chains erected, the south tower split from top to bottom. The Greek triumphal arch towers now seen in the bridge were the result of a substantial re-build.
    In 1870 the bridge closed for extensive repairs. The chains and deck were completely removed, the wrought iron bars forming the chains were re-headed and additional bars provided, the timber deck was replaced by wrought iron framework and the deck profile was lowered by about 7ft.
    The deck and hangers were again substantially renewed in 1926. However, the masonry towers remain as originally built in 1853, and are therefore the oldest surviving elements in Glasgow’s Clyde bridges."
    Interesting Film (stay the distance {29mins} )
    Glasgow 1980
    A documentary on how Glasgow would look in the 1980’s after the redevelopment of its traffic system and the construction of new housing developments, planned in the mid ’70s.
    First of what was intended to be a pair of films tracing the development of the city in the 1970’s. Filming for the sequel GLASGOW’S PROGRESS was halted in 1978 as ‘there seemed to be no end to the urban renewal in sight’.
    Director: Oscar Marzaroli
    Narrator: Michael Harrigan
    Alex Says:
    "As a Child of 1971 -: The depressing thing this film shows is that Glasgow didn’t achieve it’s full aim for “Glasgow 1980” (politics & economic greed got in the way) ; worse than that.. Many of these new areas became the slums of 80’s & 90s
    So… Glasgow has torn down what was *new* in 1960/70’s to start again for a new vision of the 21st Century…
    Time will Tell How That Works Out"
    It was free (& legal!) so.. why not?
    So anyhoo (its a word!)
    Here's an obligatory Youtube vid, to enable my sharing of its haunting awesomeness
    LYRICS:
    Still falling
    Breathless and on again
    Inside today
    Inside me today
    Around broken in two
    Til your eyes share into dust
    Like two strangers turning into dust
    Til my hand shook with the weight of fear
    I could possibly be fading
    Or have something more to gain
    I could feel myself growing colder
    I could feel myself under your fate
    Under your fate
    It was you, breathless and torn
    I could feel my eyes turning into dust
    Into strangers, turning into dust
    Turning into dust
    Turning into dust
    The above quote (perhaps it’s a paraphrase) is from my #1 Son on the picture below.
    He found it even ‘cooler’ once he discovered that it wasn’t just ‘nicked’ from somewhere but a collaboration by two of my online friends – find the post of original here
    So Thomas (photo) & Adam (art), i’m loving it immensely. (especially as I usually rotate my desktop wallpaper very frequently)
    AND high praise indeed (on the Cool Aliens) from a sometime grumpy, sleepy, incomprehensibly guttural teenager!
    It’s lost souls – it’s aliens ..
    it’s in the eye of the beholder ( now THAT’'S art!!)
    This is as it appears ‘in-situ’ on my desktop
    Looking forward to more in the future, from these fab artists!!
    March 22, 04:45 PM
    I have emailed friends & family on this, I have tweeted links about this...
    for those who haven't seen or heard of 'DEB', I thought I'd share an e-mail that I received today in this blog:
    "Dear Alexander,
    Together we're building the pressure on the Government not to rush through the Digital Economy Bill. 11,000 of us have now written to our MPs opposing the Government's plans to force it through as a "fast track" bill before the election.
    We're making the case that proposals to give the government far-reaching powers to cut people's internet connections and restrict public wifi need proper scrutiny and debate. There are signs that MPs and the media have noticed our opposition and are starting to listen. [1]
    We need to prove to MPs that public opposition to these plans being rushed through is overwhelming. The more of us that write to our MP this week, the more chance we have of winning.
    Please help. Forward this email and ask your friends to tell their MP why they're worried about rushing the Digital Economy Bill into law. They just have to click here to get started, it takes just two minutes:
    http://www.38degrees.org.uk/digital-economy-bill
    In just a few weeks MPs are hoping we'll vote for them in the General Election. That gives us an opportunity to persuade them not to force through these draconian new internet laws - if we can convince them it's unpopular, they'll think twice about doing it just before they have to face their voters.
    Opposition is growing. Web giants like Google, Yahoo, BT and TalkTalk oppose the plans. So do consumer groups, civil rights groups and digital freedom groups. A people-powered avalanche of emails could just be enough to stop the government from forcing these measures into law.
    Please click forward now and ask your friends to tell their MP why rushing through draconian internet laws is wrong. They just need to click on this link to get started:
    http://www.38degrees.org.uk/digital-economy-bill
    Thanks for getting involved,
    Johnny, David, Hannah, Nina and the 38 Degrees Team"
    Notes
    [1] http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2010/mar/17/digital-economy-bill-twitter-outcry
     As Thomas (aka @Headphonaught) says in his recent blog on this:
    "If you live in the UK... please... please... PLEASE... go to 38degrees.co.uk and write to your MP urging them to stop the Government... OUR Government... from rushing the bill through.
    It took me less than 2 minutes."
    Please, please do - this legislation is flawed & needs to be stopped & looked at properly AFTER the election at the very least!
    Afterthought:
    { Perhaps...
    Tell your MP:
    They wont have your vote if they dont oppose this NONSENSE!
    That it's time for them to prove that they are not "members of a posh gentelemans club"!! ~ But that they are "Members of Parliament" ~ Elected by their constituents to represent the will & rights of those people who put them in Parliament ~ AND ABOVE ALL ELSE... listen to the people first & at all times; NOT the lobbyists or big business (the BPI & alike) & absolutely not the disconnected, chattering political classes ~ the 60Million people in this United Kingdom far outnumber all of them!
    (that will at least make them sit up & take notice) }
    Thanks for reading my rant
