“Beginning March 20, Metro Transit will offer free bus rides along Nicollet Mall in downtown Minneapolis.
The free service will be available seven days a week for people traveling on Nicollet Mall between Washington Avenue and Grant Street.
Select buses will be marked with “Free Ride” on…
I like it, but would rather see them take ALL traffic off Nicollet Mall. One thing at a time I guess.

Look, something you’ll probably never see again, me on the front page of the Pioneer Press website (might have to confirm if that story is on the front of the print edition, scratch that, my mom just texted me, yep I’m on the front page of that too). They even spelled my name right, which is always a minor feat in itself.
It must be a super slow news day over in St. Paul. Also, from the looks of those pictures, I don’t seem to be having much fun…strange, it was beautiful out yesterday and, don’t tell anyone, but I left work for a while to do this.
Last week Lee Zukor (@leezukor) of Simple, Good and Tasty wrote an open letter to kids in which he apologized for the lunches served in our schools (go read that if you haven’t). Today he started a contest related to that post which is awesome. Kids today eat a great deal of food while in schools, if we could fix our school’s food systems, we would do a great deal to solve this countries obesity prolem. What this contest is meant to do is to show parents what their kids are actually eating while in school, which is unacceptable. Here are the details:
The Contest
In the spirit of being engaged, having fun, building community, opening our eyes, and making a difference in the lives of our kids, Simple, Good, and Tasty is hosting a school lunchcontest. Here’s your challenge:
- Step One: Meet your child for lunch at school. Order the school lunch. (If you don’t have a child in school but want to participate, you’ll find a way, we’re sure.)
- Step Two: Photograph the school lunch.
- Step Three: Eat it.
- Step Four: Send the picture(s) to us at info@simplegoodandtasty.com. Include your name, email address, the city and state where you took the picture, and any other information you’d like (name of the school, your own thoughts, etc.)
We’ll post the pictures you send, and winners will be selected based on the comments received. Prizes include:
1. GRAND PRIZE: One year of free organic milk from our partners at Organic Valley.
2. One set of Snack Taxi reusable lunch bags, donated by the kind and generous folks Linden Hills Co-op
3. Two lunchboxes, also donated by Linden Hills Co-op
4. Three Easy Lunchbox Systems
5. A DVD of the film King Corn
6. More!
Lee, this is awesome, keep it up.
Not shocking that “Neubauer” is most popular in Austria and Germany, but SLOVENIA?
Top cities, also not shocking: Munich and Berlin.
Also, my last name means “new farmer/peasant” in German. Hooray?
(via lawnmauer)
Ok this is pretty awesome. I couldn’t just re-blog it right away, had to look a little further into it. First, I wonder what you’re connection is to my good high school friend who’s last name is Neuharth. Your two names must have some connection somewhere.
Basically, my last name of Bezdicek is not very common anywhere, but here and in parts of Europe. I already knew this, but this confirms it a bit more.

Top cities are fascinating, my dad grew up near Jackson, MN on a farm and then in Lakefield, MN. I know there are lots of Bezdicek’s down there. That family farm is now what we consider our cabin, although it’s much different then most cabins in Minnesota.
Perry, OK surprises me quite a bit though, I’ve never heard of any family in that area. Might have to do some additional research into that one.

I’m also fairly surprised by the lack of references to the Czech Republic, as I’ve always considered my family from Czechoslovakia. I’ve even done some research in the past tracking my family back to a specific city and house east of Praha called Surby. So I’m not sure why the Czech Republic isn’t listed. Anyways. this stuff is fun to mess around with.

First Avenue is turning 40 this year, but save the black balloons and “Over The Hill” cards for some other middle-aged entity. This nightclub is ready to party—and it hopes you are too. In fact, it’s looking for someone who’s up for a whole lot of partying. First Ave has teamed up with The A.V. Club to give away an entire year’s worth of tickets. This contest is so crazy that if you win, the least you can do is reciprocate by baking a birthday cake. Just a thought.
I would die, but it would be worth it.
Last night I order shots, Bartender charges me $4 for the ENTIRE round then apologizes to me for the (short) wait. Then today I walk into the gas station for a Fiji water and a Calypso and the cashier charges me $1.05 plus throws in the “works” car wash
Sorry, but Fiji water pisses me off. Read: http://motherjones.com/politics/2009/09/fiji-spin-bottle
Help! I’m bored out of my mind and my only option is W 7th in St. Paul dealing with a bunch of fake-Irish people who have been drinking all day. What else can/should I do?
“I can’t wait until I get my driver’s license because I have to look for people who are 21 to get into my car and just go somewhere,” he said. “I was thinking about getting a girlfriend who was 21, but that’s kind of risky.”
Broken Crow just posted 5 new murals they did down in Austin for SXSW. It’s tough to say but I think this is my favorite of the bunch.
The Big Pink - At War With The Sun
My
cuppot of coffee and I are doing a little refresher session with The Big Pink this morning, who are playing First Ave on Wednesday.i think its thursday the 18th that they will be there.
Yes that is correct. I knew it was the 18th, but for some reason I was thinking that was Wed. Hopefully I would have figured that out by then, but thanks for the heads up though.
What’s eating Calvin Spitzer part 2 of 2. (see part 1 of 2 for the explanation of this)
What’s eating Calvin Spitzer part 1 of 2
I’m not sure why this started, but my friend Calvin one day late last year started texting me pictures of what he was eating. I was going through my phone last night and noticed how ridiculous this was getting and decided that I needed to post this. The first picture was sent on Christmas, the latest, this week from Brasa when I was sitting across the table from him. I send him some pictures back of what I’m eating, but not nearly as many as I’ve received from him.

An Ode To The Fried Egg Sandwich
Oh, my friend, I know you are capable of many things including: providing sustenance in the form of protein, carbs, dairy, and perhaps some spice; bringing happiness to any time of day in which you are included; and causing me to make grand claims such as This Is The Best Thing I Have Ever Eaten (This Morning). You are delicious at a greasy diner, you are scrumptious at a fancy restaurant covered with condiments I can’t pronounce, you are even more delightful in my apartment with homemade mustard and sharp cheese. You are better with good bread and less good with cheap bread, but even with lesser ingredients, even at fast food restaurants you are still quite satisfying.
One of these days I feel like you’re going to work your way up the ranks in the world of sandwiches, and break out a bunch of tricks that people never knew a sandwich could do. Cure cancer? Make total strangers fall in love? Help a local farmer sell millions of dozens of free range eggs? Whatever you have in store for us, I’ve got your back.
Yumm, avocados on everything please.
“Over and Over” by Lookbook. My favorite Minneapolis band at the moment.
I’m not way into the local music scene, awesome as it is, but I did just realize that one of my favorite songs on my curated Current Song of the Day playlist is by Lookbook. I’m-a have to dig more into them.
You won’t regret it, I promise. Obsessed.
I’m not sure if this is new, but this bike Minneapolis infographic is fascinating.

What’s the deal with Mexican Coca-cola?
Cane sugar/glass bottle/foreign things are cool.
Those are the best answers I can come up with. Frankly, it just tastes better.
Here’s the deal: a couple of years back, I ordered a bottle at Alex Robert’s fantastic Brasa in NE Mpls. I had a sip and was blown away. I didn’t know Coke could taste like that.
Since then, I’ve made frequent treks to my favorite supermercado inside the Midtown Global Market, and have read a bunch of great articles, blogs and heard varying opinions about Mexican Coke.
People get fired up about this stuff.
I’ve not done the blind taste testing. The double-blind scientific study or the random sampling of the Twincy population on this one. It’s not necessary to me.
I love how Mexican Coke tastes. I like how it feels in my mouth. I love how the bottle feels in my hand, and the way it feels on my lips as I take a sip (note: not gulp. You can’t really gulp from the 12oz. glass bottle. I appreciate that.). I also love the fact that it’s made with cane sugar.
I don’t hate high fructose corn syrup (HFCS). I think it’s an easy target for foodies looking to find reasons for why we’re fat. I do think HFCS is not very good for me, or for you. But it’s not the devil. That said, I think I like the taste of cane sugar better. Especially when it comes to Coca-Cola.
Viva la Coca Cola!
Love Mexican Coke. Had one at Brasa on Tuesday.
The Minneapolis Public Library circa 1900-1906. This 1884 Romanesque Revival building, designed by Long and Kees, was razed in the 1950s and is now a parking lot. Detroit Publishing Company glass negative.
Ok I may be wrong on this, but this looks like the corner of Hennipen Ave and 10th St, right? (click through for a massive look at this beautiful building)

Once upon a time Spansy sucked, then one day he didn’t.
But look at 2007. Advanced to Triple-A after a credible Double-A season (at 22), Span batted .267/.323/.355. He was only 23 that season, but our friends at Baseball Prospectus concluded, “There is not much reason to believe he can be more than an extra outfielder.”
Then, LASIK. And suddenly Span’s tearing up the International League and the Twins have to call him up and he tears up the American League and since then hasn’t really stopped.

Jónsi & Alex - All the big trees
this is mesmerizing.
“For us looking at it, you just have to assume that someone will step up. We have to just go about our business and feel like when we play the Twins it’s going to be as tough as it always is. If it isn’t then hopefully that will be good for us. But they have so much character on that team, I don’t…
Wow, that’s some respect, click through and read that whole quote.

I seriously thought I was late to the game on this when I followed him a couple weeks ago, guess not…
I LOVE Broken Crow. Behind Grumpy’s right?
(via madge-world)
Joe Nathan. Broken.
Just got out of the Twins clubhouse, where Joe Nathan, Ron Gardenhire and team trainers revealed that Nathan has a torn UCL. They’re not certain if it’s a full tear or a partial tear — Gardenhire called it “significant” — and Gardenhire says it’s the sort of thing you can’t tell until you get in and do surgery.
please don’t like this.
Ballpark Magic has some shots of Target Field plaza that opened yesterday, go check them out. 34 days.
Saw Solid Gold at the Turf Club in St. Paul last night. They are quite amazing.
I didn’t realize how early the show at First Ave was going to end, so I tried to run over for my 2nd helping of Solid Gold this weekend at the Turf, but it must have sold out 5 min prior to us getting there. They definitely rocked out Friday night though.

The Besnard Lakes - And This Is What We Call Progress
This week I’ve listened to this album and more particularly this track over and over and over and over, well you get the picture.
Regardless of their feelings about whether public money should have been used to build a new stadium for the Minnesota Twins, much of the sporting public has long agreed with the team’s owners and management on one point: As a baseball venue, fond World Series memories notwithstanding, the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome—how to put this delicately?—sucked like a Shop-Vac.
My thought when I read this sentence, is that some White Sox enthusiasts may think this has more of a literal meaning then the writer intended.
Sunshine - Atmosphere
I don’t know about the rest of the country, but today in MPLS is absolutely gorgeous. In fact, thanks to local badasses Atmosphere, it can best be summed up by this song.
Sunshine, sunshine is fine
I feel it in my skin, warmin’ up my mind
Sometimes you got to give in to win
I love the days when it shines
Whoa, let it shine.
Vitamin D!!!!!
